SCJP Certification

Hi,
I need some clarification on what is the difference between SCJP 1.4 and 5. Which one should one go for Certification.

Hi Krishnendu,
This is the same reply from my thread..
Well SCJP 1.4 n 5.0 have lot of differences if u consider the exam objectives, highlighting a few - Generics, serialization, file I/O, autoboxing and unboxing, Regex, enumerations etc which are added for the 5.0 exam and bitwise operators removed from 1.4
Abt the difficulty level, well SCJP 5 is difficult 4 sure when compared to 1.4, but that again depends on you java knowledge. If you're well versed with new capabilities of java 5 after 1.4.2 version, u'll find it slightly easier.
Abt the importance of exams, well take SCJP 5 if projects in your organization have already moved on to Java 1.5, and if you're still gonna work on java 1.4 and below legacy code for sometime, going for the 1.4 exam is better

  • SCJP Certification Query

how do i prepare for SCJP Certification. suggest me the websites for Scjp Mock Test.

The two books on certification, they are :
    • A programmer's guide to Java Certification (Second Edition) - Khalid A. Mughal & Ralf W. Rasmuseen.
    • Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5 SCJP ( Exam 310-055) Exam Study Guide - Kathy Sierra Bert Bates.
    • SCJP Exam For J2SE 5 - Paul Sanghera, Ph.D
First two books are great. I suggest you pick up Third Edition for Khalid's books as it covers Java
Third book (Paul's) is ok but it is too concise for certification preparation.
A good number of mock exams in various website. A few that I remember are:

  • SCJP Certification.  Available on-line?

I have a job offer that is contingent upon my successful completion of the SCJP exam (WGS-PREX-JO55C). The prospective employer has asked that I get back to them ASAP regarding my testing status, but I have a couple of questions that must be answered first. I was hoping to get the answers here. Thanks in advance. ... nsd
    1. Can I take the exam on-line or must I schedule an exam time at an
official testing site? If on-line, can I take the test immediately if I
    choose?
    2. When and how will I know the results of the test?
    3. Is there a way that others can verify my exam results on-line (without
having to wait for results via regular mail) ?
    4. If I fail the exam, when can I retake it?

    > 1. Can I take the exam on-line or must I schedule an
exam time at an official testing site?
    You must schedule a time.
    2. When and how will I know the results of the test?
Immediately upon completion of the test.
    > 3. Is there a way that others can verify my exam
results on-line (without having to wait for results via regular mail) ?
Yes, but you'll also walk out of the exam center with certified results. Online confirmation through Sun is available within a few days, I believe.
    > 4. If I fail the exam, when can I retake it?
Two weeks or more after your failure.

  • SCJP 1.4 certification primer

The Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP) examination has recently been updated for J2SE 1.4, which means you'll have to jump through some new hoops to get a passing score. In this primer to SCJP certification, Pradeep Chopra, cofounder of WHIZlabs Software, outlines some of the most important changes to the SCJP 1.4 exam, suggests several ways to prepare for it, and offers some sample questions</a> to get you started.

    Hi all,
I have recently purchased a java certification voucher against cash payment, but the centre from where I had purchased it didn't gave me any receipt for that. Now I am wondering if this is ok or I may face some problem afterwards when I go to the prometric center for getting registered.
I am absolute novice so please tell me what should I do? Also suggest me which certification should i opt for : the scjp for java 2 platform or the scjp for java 2 platform(v1.4).
    Thanks in advance,
    Rgds

  • About SCJP!

    Hey Bros,
    I have a good programming background(C#.Net and VB.Net)
Frankly, I'm kindda bored of Microsoft stuff, So I'm Planning on SCJD.
Of Course, we all know that you should have a SCJP first, So I have two ways to accomplish that :
1-Self-Learning: depending On my previous experience in programming, and most at my ex in C#, I can go through Java and learn what makes me qualified for a SCJP exam or,
2-Training Center: I go to one of those, take the essential training of SCJP,
and spend a lot of money(Which is Something that I don't prefer!)
Plus that these kind of courses contain some materials that became basics to me ..
Here's the Java Diploma tracks from the training center I went:
    -Java Programming Language basics
    -Advanced Object Oriented Programming
    -Building Java Applications
    -Developing Graphical User Interfaces
    -Advanced Java Programming
    So The questions are :
    -Which Way to Choose?
and If I Choose the self-learning way..
-When Can I tell that I'm Qualified for popping into a SCJP certification exam ??
    Thanks In Advance!

There is no need for an overpriced training center to do the SCJP. What you need is to get a good text, look for something by by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates that is appropriate for the cert you want to do. Do all the exercises and any Mock Exams in the book.
Go to www.javaranch.com (K&B's website) and another Java Forum. they have extensive coverage of all certification topics, with a forum per exam and lots of activity. they can recommend plenty of further mock tests.
You are ready when you can get a nearly perfect score on the mock tests.
And there is absolutely no need to pay money to some scumbag organization that claims a 150% pass rate to get mock tests.

  • SCJP 6 or 5?

    Hi all,
I'm planning to take the SCJP certification exam in the next months. However, I´d like to know what is the recommended exam for this time. Is it a good time to take the 310-065 exam (java version 6)? Is it better to take the 055 (java 5)?
Thank you all for your comments!

Please don't crosspost (though this was the correct forum in which to post- I've moved the other thread to this forum and will be locking this one).

  • SCJP reading material

What do you think of reading the "Head First Java" book in preparatino for the SCJP Certification exam? Its written by the same author that wrote "SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5 Study Guide". So I assume the contents/layout should be similar?

The entire Head First series is excellent IMHO,
though the style is a bit informal and downright "weird" (in a fun way)
So Head First may not be for everyone,
especially if you prefer a formal education style.
But as with all certification exams, do not expect that
reading one book alone, or taking one class alone,
will adequately prepare you for the certification exam.
You need to practice your Java skills. The books and classes
will provide you with an excellent head start. But when you
are finished with them, do something more. If you have an idea,
write an original program. But if no ideas, try re-implementing a
    well-known program, e.g., a spreadsheet, a game, a chat client. etc.
Better yet, find an open-source software (OSS) project and
help out by contributing code. OSS project are always in need of help.
And put your ego aside, there is a lot of great practice to be had
implementing or fixing mundane thing like printer drivers, or file I/O.
Also one of the best ways to help contribute to an OSS project AND
get great practice writing Java code is writing unit tests.

Well, what are they charging you? I mean maybe the whole certification is a fraud.
If you post the amount you're paying someone may tell you if it's reasonable.

  • How many SCJPs in the world?

Is it valueable to spend a lot $$$ and time to pass this? :D

i don't know how an SCJP certification translates into greater salary, if at all. for me, it meant demonstrating to whomever wanted to know that i was willing to make the effort to show that i knew something, enough to pass a test. there are many SCJP out there, i'm sure, that i wouldn't want working on my project, because while they pass the exam--sometimes barely--their working knowledge of java is weak. regardless of whether you choose the SCJP route, hone your skills by apprenticing to a stronger programmer, and working on challenging projects.

  • SCJP: Is it worth it?

Is the SCJP certification considered to be impressive by most companies?
Can it make the difference between being hired or not?
    Thanks

Is the SCJP certification considered to beimpressive
by most companies?Depends on the who and the company and the country.
If a supervisor has taken and passed the exam, they
might be impressed. The exam is very difficult, even
    for experience programmers.
The exam is difficult for many people, but NOT because of the topics being covered.
It's difficult because of the way the questions are worded, covering rather basic topics for the most part.
The simple fact that kids fresh out of college who've never programmed before can cram for it for a few weeks and get high scores (in the 90% range) first try says enough.
Now does it matter. Does the company actually check
with Sun to see if a candidate is telling the truth?
Has the company hired phony programmers in the past?
Ah. But a lot of phony programmers are guys having high scores at certification exams without ever having used the knowledge those exams are supposed to test.
    >
Can it make the difference between being hired ornot?
I doubt it. Again, it depends on who is making the
decision and the requirements of the position.
Given 2 otherwise equally suitable candidates, it might make a difference.
Otherwise, it might hinder you (personally, and it was that way in several companies I worked in, I'd rather hire someone with more formal education than someone with a lot of certificates, especially if there was no work experience to back up those certs) .
Is it still worth it to take the exam? Yes, it will
be a good excercise. If you pass the exam, then youStudying for the exam can help highlight gaps in your knowledge, having a set date to gain that knowledge can be a good incentive to sit down with those books that you've had sitting in your bookcase but never got around to read.
That, and the satisfaction of a nice score, are the real benefits.
resume will NOT do the trick. There are many
programmers that put SCJP that never get certified
and never take the exam, yet they put it on their
resume and lie about their achievements. When theNever heard of that happening. It's fraud and can get you fired.
tough projects come, they typically fold under
pressure and leave or get their employment contract
    axed.
Most people who end up like that DID in fact pass the exam but passed it without actually knowing their stuff.
They crammed for a few weeks, leaving them with short term memory retention of enough data to pass the exam but no real knowledge and long term retention (which comes only from actively using that knowledge for a prolonged period of time).
They then fail under pressure because they've forgotten everything again, just like what happens to many kids in school who don't do their homework but cram for tests.
And that is the Truth Ruth :o)

  • SCJA & SCJP Questions

Hi all, I would like to clear out a few points/questions if possible.
    First -
I'm a C++ programmer but want to extend my knowledge in learning Java therefore im thinking of taking the Sun Certifications, which would start from SCJA. Now, would the SCJA study guide be appropriate to achieve this certification or would I need addional training software, like the bundle set "Java Entry Level Certification Solution (CDJ-JAVA-NOV)" provided by Sun itself.
    Second -
Considering the fact im rather new to Java and its technology, ive been reading about Java 6.. would it be ideal to wait a little and study the 'new' version before moving into the Java 5 certifications.. just to be with the 'latest' technology or is Java 6 just a small extension/upgrade upon Java 5 ?
    Third -
As my main aim is to reach the SCMAD Certification level, I would like to know what good books are available for the SCJP certification exams, as stated in the main question (SCJA and SCJP both rely in the Java SE technology) , the bundle set kinda covers the Java SE aspects and was wondering if its feasible enough to just purchase that training kit to study that course material or if there is any other relevant/suitable material instead that I should go with.
Many thanks and really appreciate your help.

on the contrary, it means you can memorize facts.no
understanding is impliedNot even close to true. The test is filled with
questions that present code and questions that ask if
the code will it break at compile time, runtime, or
run just fine, etc. What will the output be, etc.
Aside from memorizing data types, you must be able to
compile and run code in your brain. To me this
implies and understanding. And as most people are
reliant upon compilers and runtime errors to write
solid code, it's not easy. I think you should really
have a look at the exam and let's see how well you do.I'm not saying it's easy, and by "no understanding is implied" I mean understanding of writing software, not the mechanics of the language. my point is that SCJP et al are meaningless in terms of deciding someone's employability, since what they test is largely academic. as you say, people have compilers and tools to lean on for details such as syntax errors, so what use is testing that knowledge manually? a wide vocabulary is no indicator of a good author, a good story-teller, is it? show me the engine in your car, and I can tell you what most components are called, what they do and how they work. ask me to actually fix something in there, and I'm completely lost. the understanding of the mechanics is not enough
like it or not, knowing the syntax of the language, and the rules about what will and won't compile, etcetera, is just memorizing facts. being able to produce working complex software is a different skill, which these exams do not examine. nothing wrong with that in itself, but the danger comes because so many employers don't understand this, and see SCJP/whichever as proof that the person holding it is competent. it isn't, and I've met enough java cert'd people to know this

    Strike notice
A number of the regular posters here are striking in protest at the poor
management of these fora. Although it is our unpaid efforts which make the
fora function, the Sun employees responsible for them seem to regard us as
contemptible. We hope that this strike will enable them to see the value
which we provide to Sun. Apologies to unsuspecting innocents caught up in
    the cross-fire.

  • A few questions I need some advice with.

NOTE If you can put some source code as examples to answer some of my questions then that would be much appreciated.
    1)
I know how to put an image on an applet but my problem is how do I put an image in a JFrame?... rather than just using the boring set background color options.Example I have matrix.bmp and I want that as my background image on my java application/frame how do I go about doing that.
    2)
When I try the SCJP certification in x amount of time in the future, if I get a job as a Java programmer - would theye expect me to use a full blow API or IDE, or would theye just let me use a text editior?
The reason I ask that is because I preffer using a text editor and want to know if i'll have to learn how to use an IDE in the future.
    3)
I cant seem to find a good native compiler! (I can use a search engine so no smart comments please) i've found two, one is useless and the one I found on sourceforge cant seem to find the correct compiler once I attempt to create a Java exe. (link me a freeware one if you can please)
    4)
Is it possible to create a Jar file with anything other than an applet? i'm guessing you can but I keep getting a manifest error message... thus an explanation on why mine and a lot of other jar files (even in the java sdk) get that message and how to get around it.
I have some more questions about socks ect but i'll leave that for now.
    Thanks in advance

The reason I ask that is because I preffer using a text editor and want to know if i'll have to learn how to use an IDE in the future. You may well change your mind about that when you've got a sizeable project to deal with!

  • JAVA Fresher-Should I join Sun Authorised learning Centre?

    Hello friends,
I m a BCA Graduated in 2004 from India. I have 2 years of experience as Web Developer(PHP). Due to Family problems I could not go for regular MCA. Presently persuing MCA from ICFAI, Tripura first Semester. But I m not able to get any job in Big IT Giants like Infosys, TCS as these companies don't have requirements for PHP Developers and to join as a fresher I m not eligible to apply as I m 2004 passout and these companies demand atleast 2005 passout.
Therefore I m thinking of migrating to JAVA. I don't know ABC of JAVA. There are a number of local institutes teaching JAVA for 10k-15K INR in Delhi/NCR region and providing fake experience certificate for 2 years in JAVA to me as I have 2 years of industry experience.
I need help from all experienced people out there. Should I join a local institute or should I go for Sun authorised learning Centre?
I know about one Authorised learning Centre, SQLStar International. They charge around 33000 INR for 256 hrs of training to be completed in 64 working days. They claim that their training prepares a person for SCJP and SCWCD exam cost of which is 7200 Per Exam.
    So total cost is 33000 + 7200 + 7200 = 47400 INR
Please tell me if its a right decision to spend this much amount on training and certification?
Does it make any difference while on a Job Hunt if you are trained from a Authorised learning Centre or a local centre?
Will it be easy to get job after this training and certification?
If someone want, I can mail him/her couse contents of SQLStar and a local Institute for comparison.
Please guys I need honest advice.
Thankyou all for your time and efforts.

Hi, my name is Jeffry (Indonesia)
Actually, if you can do self-study, you can do self learning with java book, after that, you can submit E-practice Exam for scjp, and then you take the exam
If the employer has a choice, he or she will choose the job seeker with the SCJP certification.
Sun microsystems created the Java technology, of course their training courses support for the material covered in any certification exam such as SCJA, SCJP, SCJD, SCMAD, etc.
I already get certified in 27 August 2007, in my experience, I studied so many Java books, and then I took SL-275 training, E-practice exam, and the the SCJP exam. That's all that I can do to share my experience, the choice is yours. When you passed the exam, don't forget to share experience and score (if you want to share your score, my score is 68%)
