Screen corruption 17" MBP i7

i all
Just noticed this problem in the last few months.
Have a unibody 17" i7 MBP and get the screen corruption primarily when running Safari 5.0 (whatever the newest build is).
Interestingly enough I run a program called gxfCardStatus and if I choose Nvidia rather than Intel (or Auto which = Intel) the corruption goes away. If I choose Intel again the corruption is back.
Not sure if this is a hardware issue or just a serious bug introduced by Safari 5.0. I don't remember having the problem before upgrading.
Here is a screen capture
http://users.tpg.com.au/soupratt/test2.jpg

As I recall, the new MBPs have dual GPUs which can be alternated between. So, it looks like your low power Intel graphics chip is bad. Which means you have a choice.
Option A is to take it to an Apple store or AASP to have the logic board replaced.
Option B is to just keep using the nVidia graphics chip, sacrificing some battery life when you don't really need the extra graphics processing power.

  • Please Help - Screen corruption while in Aperture - graphics card problem?

Over the past few weeks, I have noticed frequent screen corruption within the confines of the image that I am currently editing. The corruption only occurs when in Aperture. The corruption occurs as multiple thin (one pixel?) horizontal lines of random color and random length that occur in random locations within the image. If I force a re-calculation of the image (such as change white balance) the random lines will disappear, only to reappear somewhere else. The actual image (after export) is never corrupted, only the display. Recently Aperture has started to "hang" in random ways, sometimes freezing the whole machine, sometimes crashing, sometimes beach-balling.
This sounds like a hardware problem to me, but the standard Apple hardware test runs without errors, as does an extended memtest. Setup: Mac Pro, 5GB, SW fully updated to 10.4.11 and Aperture 1.5.6. I tried re-seating the graphics board to no avail.
Are there any programs that I can use to test the Radeon X1900 card?
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks David,
I did some more research and it appears that quite a few of us (unlucky) users with an early version of the Radeon X1900 graphics card are now seeing failures that appear to be due to poor heat dissipation by the graphics card. There's a huge thread on the subject here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1195969
The problem with random display glitches doesn't show up for most people until they upgrade to Leopard, which puts a larger strain on the graphics card than Tiger. I am still running Tiger, but the glitches show up for me when using Aperture, which of course uses the graphics card more aggressively than most other programs. I assume that Aperture increases the heat which causes the glitches.
I tried cleaning the dust out of the Radeon's heat sink, and I added a tool (smcFanControl) that lets me manually override the default fan speed. By keeping the card's temperature lower, the glitches have gone away. If I let the temperature rise, they come back. Looks like I'll be needed a new graphics card.

  • Screen corruption in openbox

Switched from KDE to openbox today and getting weird screen corruption (not sure that's the correct term but never mind) in loads of applications, on things like the terminal if I scroll up then back down it dissapears but in things like deluge there's no way to get rid of it at all
Sometimes it's just black and white (like in the screenshot) and other times there's lines of different colours.
Not using testing repo, graphics card is ATI HD3200 and using the xf86-video-ati driver from extra.
Any ideas what's causing it or how to get rid of it?
    Thanks

Same problem as here I guess. First off, try another GTK theme and see if that helps.

  • Firefox 16.02 hardware acceleration osx imac started causing screen corruption

Weird screen corruption with Firefox 16.02 with hardware acceleration switched on.
iMac 11,1 Intel Core i7 2.8 GHz running OSX 10.6.8 with ATI Radeon HD 4850 display hardware.
Some bizarre effects like a surround on two sides (top and right) of main Firefox window with elements captured from the top and side of main screen which on occasions flash at high speed and also a mouse focal point offset
I've tried Firefox safe mode and extensions plugins disabled and it definitely seems to be caused by switching hardware acceleration on as problems disappear when switched off.
Never had this problem before in several years use of Firefox until 16.02

Thanks for the link. Has something changed in FF v16.02 hardware acceleration that you are aware of that might have caused this?

Hi I wanted to let you know that the hard drive is bad I am meeting with the apple manager tomorrow since my laptop is no longer under warranty but I had previously brought the laptop in for the same black screen when the warranty was good.. Have any pointers on how to approach them ?  I'm seriously disheartened by this especially since my 2006 white MacBook is running like a champ with no problems ever which is why I decided to buy another MacBook but one that was capable of running Lion

  • Odd screen corruption only with admin account?

I hope this is the right place to post this. I'm having an odd screen corruption issue on my Mac Pro 2.0. As the cursor passes the mid point of my midpoint of the screen, the screen will "jump" or "shift" and add a row or column of pixels to the monitor. Any text or graphics around the these newly created rows will become corrupt or appear doubled. Also the cursor will behave very oddly. When rolling over a text field in an application sometimes the arrow won't convert to the text entry icon, the entry icon will appear superimposed on the arrow icon.
At first i thought it was a hardware issue (video card going bad ) but Hardware Test came back clean. As a last resort I created a new user and voila! the corruption goes away when logged in under the new user! I'm assuming there is a corrupted file somewhere associated with the admin user account. Obviously I can't delete the user as it's the owner/admin account. Any place I can start looking where the offending file might be found?
    Mark

Hmm, I've got screen zoom turned off so I don't think that's it. Now some of my icons are coming up corrupted, but again, only when I'm logged into my admin acct. Is there a preference file that in the user/~/library/preferences file that i could toss and see if it helps? I could always just toss the whole preference files folder after backing up and then try replacing them one at a time but I'd rather not do that if I have a choice.

  • Screen Corruption on Export

    Hi,
trying to export a project from Premier Pro CC on Mac (OSX 10.8.5 8G RAM)
Don't normally have a problem but this project is being a pain. The sequence is only about 2m47 but it just takes ages exporting, and after a while (as you can see below), the screen corrupts & nothing works.
Have tried cleaning the media cache
Have tried exporting a movie from another project: fine (well, still slow but not as slow as the other)
We're mainly working off the system HDD which is 750G but only has 36G free. Surely that's enough breathing space though?
Only thought is that this project may have been started in PP CS6 and then converted into PP CC.
    Any ideas welcome
    Joel

We're mainly working off the system HDD which is 750G but only has 36G free. Surely that's enough breathing space though?
Not by far. Single disk is very slow when only 36 GB is occupied. Now it is multiple times slower. See Tweakers Page - Disk Setup

  • Captivate 6 for Mac too buggy for use (screen corruption, mouse/audio instability)

Corrupt Screens. The main problem is corrupt screens (visually jumbled, with elements of previous screens). The corrupt screens appear in both Preview in a Web Browser and in a published project. I've observed the problem when I capture website interactions (using either Safari or Firefox). It might be isolated to web browsers and not other applications, but I'm not sure. The project slides themselves look fine. The problem occurs during the transition to an HTML/SWF-based preview or published file.
Unfortunately the problem appears to be intermittent and unpredictable: one Preview (in Web Browser) might show one corrupt screen; a subsequent Preview (in Web Browser) might show four corrupt screens (after making no changes to the Captivate file). It appears to be related to various timeline factors (mouse position, mouse duration). I was able to temporarily eliminate the problem in one project file by making sure all mouse elements had a 2/10th second gap before the end of the slide and were no longer than 2 seconds long. But in a later test, controlling for these variables did not work.
There are two other related bugs that occur in Preview or publish:
Mouse. If I move the mouse object from its original position on the timeline, say, from the end of the slide to a position just before, and then move it back to the end of the slide, the result is faulty mouse behavior. It moves very slowly over the first part of its arc, then either skips suddenly to the destination or doesn't complete the arc at all when the slide advances to the next slide.
Audio. Sometimes the audio for a single slide will not play. This is intermittent and unpredictable, like the screen corruption bug. The problem sometimes goes away after moving the mouse on the timeline slightly, but this isn't reliable.
In any case, moving the mouse away from the end of the slide is not a desirable workaround, even when it does work. The delay between the "click" and the slide transition looks sloppy, and is contrary to the expected mouse behavior (to quickly trigger a slide transition).
I have been working with two people at Adobe tech support, but we have not found a solution or isolated the problem. I've also documented several keystroke bugs on this forum. So, after nearly 3 weeks of aggravation, I have concluded that Captivate 6 for Mac has serious bugs and is not reliable. I am forced to go back to Captivate 5.5.

I have experienced the exact same issues.  I've republished files over and over again with unpredictable results.  Missing audio, ghost backgrounds, visual artifacts.  That doesn't even begin to address the other major annoyances like the stage jumping around when you do things like adjust element properties, audio editor opening up half off the screen so that it has to be manually dragged back EACH TIME.
I'm totally frustrated and disgusted with the quality of this product.  I don't care one bit about all the new features it has, I just want the featues that are there to work right and work reliably.  Today alone, I lost over 4 hours of productivity to resolving buggy software issues... I'm not exaggerating, 4 HOURS !.  This is absolutely unacceptable.  The software does NOT work well at all.  Adobe should be horrified with how bad this software performs.  I can't say enough negative things about this without using expletives that are well deserved.
After purchssing adobe software for 25 years, I am running out of patience.  They are too big and too focused on new features instead of just making the ones they have work well.  I used to love Adobe more than any other software company.  That is definitely no longer the case.  I have no intention of up doing any more upgrades after this.  If these APPALLING blatant issues are not resolved before they release version 7,  I will not upgrade and may well consider enlisting others in a class action suit.  Fire all the developers who have a hand in this.  Fire all the managers who signed off on it's readiness.  Go back to the drawing board and make this right.
I fully intend on posting this in every forum I can find.  This software has cost me too much time and money.

  • What kind of LCD screen is the MBP display?

I have a 2007 Santa Rosa Macbook Pro. I'm curious what kind of LCD screen the display is. I know TN is the worst, and something like ISPS is better...

The screens in the MBP are provided by one of three manufacturers: Samsung, LG, and Chimei. Although there is a host of debate about which is the best between Samsung and LG, everyone agrees that Chimei screens are the worst.
The Samsung panels tend to be more "vivid" compared to the LG screens (although you'll only notice this difference if you compare the two side by side.) The LG screens tend to be less susceptible to "yellowing." If you get a good, defect-free Samsung panel you hit the jackpot. It's the best of the three.
To find out which one you have, go to System Preferences > Displays > Color > Open Color Profile and scroll down to line 13. Post the code next to "Manufacturer Code." (It should be something like 0000009c68.) Bring it back here and someone will be able to tell you what screen you have.
Of course, unrelated to the screen, the Santa Rosa MacBook Pro was the first to introduce LED backlighting.

  • MSI Radeon R9 270X Hawk - Screen corruption

    Hello,
I dearly ask for your help, I have an issue with my MSI HAWK Radeon R9 270X, after using my computer for a while the screen on the primary/secondary monitor will become unreadable(see the first link), If I switch the monitor off via Catalyst Control Center the screen corruption will appear onto the  other monitor. Maybe the newer BIOS would help, I have the same issue with another MSI HAWK R9 270X. I didn't have any problems with my former video cards (Geforce GTS 250, GTS450, Radeon 6850 and Radeon 7850).
I tried both 13.12 drivers as well as the newest betas 14.1 ,the only difference was the first target affected, on 13.12 the corruption would appear on primary monitor whereas on 14.1 it would affect the secondary one.
Also occasionally I experience the screen flicker issue as well, maybe newer BIOS could solve both of them.
    My system specs:
Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 with 2104 Bios version
    4x Corsair XMS 2000MHz 4GB
Thermaltake Evo Blue 2.0 750W Power Supply

    Monitor#2  BenQ FP73E S
Both of them connected via DVI

Can't download the vbios from that site you linked to.
None the less >>this<< is the latest vbios
    TV303MH.131 is normal vbios, TV303MH.141 is LN2
Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the previously provided archive (131_141.rar) and put the included file (TV303MH.131 or TV303MH.141) on that stick.
Rename TV303MH.131 / TV303MH.141 to 131.rom / 141.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
Type atiflash -p -f -noaper 0 131.rom (or 141.rom) [ENTER] and let it flash the vbios.

  • [kinda solved] Intel HD4000 screen corruption

Kernel 3.3.8 and results in screen corruptions right after "udev" finishind events. The system freezes and that's it.
Kernel LTS kind of works, but I get minor glitches when running gnome-shell (guess - 3.0.x has no Ivy Bridge support).
I did already try to recreate the initramfs via
    mkinitcipio -p linux
(3.3.8, not lts) with the modules
    i915
    aswell as
    intel_agp
(/etc/mkinitcpio.conf) specified, but neither did change anything.
    Additional kernel-params
    i915.modeset=1 i915.semaphores
    do not change anything.
    Booting with
    nomodeset=1
kind of works, but I can not start a X session due to KMS/modesetting being required for the driver.
I also played around with BIOS settings enabling and disabling RC6 and render idle modes in the BIOS do have no effect either (I did not enforce/disable RC6 via kernel-options yet).
    Any help is appreciated
    Thanks a million

  • 5800 screen corruption

My 5800 has been fine these last 6 months but a few days ago it developed a fault whereby the screen corrupts when keylock off is selected.  Sometimes it clears in a second or 2 other times it refuses to come back and repeated use ot the keylock and the red button are the only cures.  The screen displays many horizontal lines and it is not possible to read anything but pressing the screen will activate any icons you touch even though you do not know which one you have pressed.
I have the latest software update.  I have not tried a hard or soft reset.  Took it back to local store today but its a new fault to them. they have offered to send it away and give me a loan phone meanwhile.  Before I do that, I thought I would ask if anyone had seen anything similar.
    Cheers

hi i recently got successfully repaired my broken screen on my 5800 it was working fine for a few days and then i updated the Firmware to V5... when it turned back on after update the bottom half of the screen was white and the top half is corrupt and looks like 1cm chunk of what should be on the right of the screen is now on the left...it also effects the digitiser which leads me to believe that it must be a software problem.....ive flashed the firmware (V5) over and over again and still no difference during the flash process however when the screen says nokia local mode and the screen looks fine so this must be a software problem????
if any one could help then that would be most appreciated!!!!

  • G780 screen Corruption

    Please help,
I have screen corruption identical to the type "B" kind shown in this Lenovo link:
     http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht001223
I have the most updated BIOS (v9.01) and video drivers from Lenovo.  The laptop is Intel pentium cpu 2020 @2.40 ghz x2, single dimm with 4 gb ram.  Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.sp1  When I plug in and external monitor that works fine.  The laptop screen is fine  for about 2 minutes when I first turn it on when it's been off for a while. There is a faint horizontal line about 3/4 inch from the top and everything above that line is fine and everything below it is corrupted.  It's about 2 years old.  If I restart, the corruption is in the in the opening screen too before Windows loads.

Are you talking about individual pixels or larger blocks on the screen?
If they are just individual pixels they are probably stuck (as in caused by the monitor, not the video card). Pixels can get stuck on/off, just in one color or just about any combination. You might try a program like this to check if it is a stuck pixel.:

  • Boot failure - white screen corrupted with yellow repeated bit-pattern.

    Hi
I have had a quick look at the postings esp those with pictures and can't find a similar prob to mine. My white 24" iMac hasn't been able to boot for months now, except a couple of times but it then subsequently started playing up. As well as a boot failure the white boot screen has yellow bit-patterns on it, usually horizontal or speckled. I have been able to run the diagnostics program from the OSX disc but it didn't find any problems. The computer displays and animates the spinning wheel while booting, but overlaid on the corrupted white screen, and then 99% of time gets no further.
I have made 5 screenshots with my 3G iPhone, the first two are of one boot attempt, the third is another boot attempt (note slightly different bit pattern - this one is the most common I get) and last two are of a successful boot attempt into AHT (Apple Hardware Test). If anyone recognizes this type of screen problem please do reply.

Hi, I am having a similar problem from what you described, but I can't even get the disk up and running for a clean install with Snow Leopard.  I'm curious if you have found a solution.  I fairly certain that it is not an issue with the hard drive.

  • T500 Windows 7 Screen Corruption

I have reasonably new T500 (2242-CTO) that was originally loaded with Vista and 'downgraded' to XP. I've been forced to rebuild the machine and decided to go straight for Windows 7.
The T500 is noted as supporting Windows 7 and has been built as per the Lenovo instructions, here...
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-74108
The build is done from a clean hard drive. I have run the build twice, once using ThinkVantage System Update 4.0 and a second time installing Windows 7 drivers in the specified order. Both resulting in the same problem.
Windows 7 (Ultimate, x86 version) fires up fine and runs with the Aero interface and everything looks fine. Transparency and window animation etc. is working. But after using the machine for a short time and opening up an application or two I get blocks of screen corruption, typically in areas of the screen being repainted. The corruption can be seen anywhere on the screen, including the taskbar area. Minimising then restoring typically cleans up the screen for a while.
On one occasion I heard what I believe was the hard disk powering down (a faint clunk) and corruption appeared at exactly the same time.
The machine has the Intel X4500-HD graphics accelerator and if the driver for this is not installed then no corruption is seen (but the Aero interface isn't supported.)
When I used the Lenovo System Update method to build the machine there was a PC Doctor utility. The PC Doctor UI became corrupted prior to running diags but all of its video diags ran, looked fine, and passed.
From a graphics point of view the machine worked flawlessly under XP.

I had a very very similar problem with my x200 running on an Intel integrated graphics GPU (x4500).  The work-around I found to eliminate this visual tearing problem was to disable Intel "VT-D" in the BIOS.  I have absolutely no good reason why this works, but it did the trick for me.
