Screen is dirty behind the screen

I've had my iMac for a little over a year. The other day I noticed that part of the screen looked dirty. I got some screen clean but I couldn't clean it. I believe the dirt is behind the screen. I have Apple Care. What should I do? It's hard to see ( that's why it took me so long to notice it). I can only see it when it is over a white screen. I don't know if I should take it to my local Apple store. I don't want to be without it for too long.
Thanks.

If you do a search in communities for "dirt inside screen, or dirt under screen, you will find others with the same problem.
Some have said it's not dirt but the LCD that as a problem.
Others confirmed it is some sort of dust.
Call Apple, they will arrange a repair for you.
And since you have Apple Care, you can get it repaired in your house if you live less then 50 miles from an Authorized Apple Service Provider.
ATTENTION! Some have mentioned that Apple tried blaming this problem on a dirty or very dusty environment. You might have to insist on how clean your house is!

  • Dirty Black Blotches inside my brand new iMac screen, behind the glass

My brand new 21 inch iMac has some blotches in the screen. I didn't notice at first because my wallpaper is very colorful and has some blotch designs on it, but I opened a textedit document and the blotches are very visible on the plain white background. I tried wiping the surface of the glass with the cloth that comes in the iMac box only to discover that the blotch marks are BEHIND the glass!
Please HELP! :-O I tried calling the 1-800 apple support number for my country (Philippines) but the number doesn't work or is not supported by my phone company or mobile phone company. I took a picture of the defects and was hoping to email it to apple, but I cannot find a proper support email address on the apple.com site. Is there a way to attach them to this forum thread? It is quite frustrating and I don't know what to do.
What steps should I take to remedy this?

  • Second monitor "hide" the programs behind the screen background.

    Hi!
Updated my system a couple of days ago. When I rebooted, my second screen comes up as normal, except I can't get anything to show on that screen.
The primary screen works as normal. The second screen shows the background and conky, but when I try to open anything on the screen, it opens, kind of behind the background. I can use the program, and drag it to the first screen. Then I see it. It's almost like the screen background covers it.
Have a nvidia GPU and using Awesome as VM.
Anyone have an idea what the problem might be?

I believe your only option will be to get Apple to replace the screen for you, which won't be cheap.  If the machine is still covered under warranty, you could try to push the case that the screen must be defective for a bug to get in there.  Apple has been known to do free out-of-warranty service in some pretty unbelievable circumstances, that that is at their discretion, so be very pleasant and polite so they'll like you and want to help you out.    But be prepared to have to pay for the repair.
    Good luck!

  • When pulling down a long pulldown menu, the menu, instead of starting a new row, will extend past the bottom and behind the browser so that I can't navigate to an item that's below/behind the screen.

When pulling down a long pulldown menu, the menu, instead of starting a new row, will extend past the bottom and behind the browser so that I can't navigate to an item that's below/behind the screen. FF should be making a second row for these long pulldown menus, right?

Nope, there is no second row. There should be a scroll arrow "button" at the bottom and the top of that drop-down to allow you scroll, or you can use the scroll wheel on the mouse scroll further down (or back up).

Try to edit the size of the page using the sides of the page, or if you are desperate, force quit using command-Q. In full screen put your cursor on the top of the page, and the menu bar will appear. If it doesn't keep "pushing" it up until it does. Hope this helps!

  • I have a 4th Gen. nano.  The screen is constantly disappearing.  It looks like a film behind the glass screen.  As it deteriorates, I can read less and less on the screen.  What is that called and can it be repaired?

I have a 4th generation nano.  The black screen behind the glass screen seems to be cracked and constantly disappearing.  It started in the corner and is working its way across the top of the screen.  The titles will disappear soon.  What do I need to have reapaired?

With the external screen connected and turned on, open the Displays pane in System Preferences. On the screen containing your menu bar, you should now see a Displays preference dialog box with an "Arrangement" tab in it. Click the Arrangement tab. Uncheck the box for "Mirror Displays," or make sure it is already unchecked. In the image within the preferences dialog box you should see two adjoining blue rectangles representing your two screens. A white bar on one representes the menu bar and indicates that that is the primary display. The larger rectangle represents your TV screen. If it's on the right side of the smaller rectangle representing your MBP's screen, then dragging a window off the right side of the built-in screen will move the window onto the TV.
Now open any application window — a web browser window, for example — and drag it by its title bar to move it off the edge of your built-in screen onto the TV screen. Got that? You can do the same thing with any other window, including a DVD Player or VLC window containing a movie that you want to watch.
Things to note: In this dual-display mode, which is called Extended Desktop mode, the menu bar and Dock will always appear on only one of the screens, and you can choose which one they appear on by dragging the white bar representing the menu bar from one rectangle to the other in the System Prefs > Displays > Arrangement tab. You can also set the resolutions of the two screens independently of each other. The highest available resolution on each screen will always provide the sharpest image.

  • Dust/Dirt/Dark patch behind the screen?!

I am certain that this has appeared today, and seems to be a small dark patch of something behind the screen. It is not a dead or stuck pixel but a small dark patch almost in the centre of the screen.
I have tried cleaning the screen with the provided cloth and a small amount of water but it does seem to be behind it, I just don't understand how!

Time Machine will create a complete backup, but you can't boot from TM. For instance, so your drive crashes. You can attach an external FW drive and boot from that. I know you used to not be able to boot from a USB drive, but I don't know if Apple changed that. I would check that out. If you can boot from a USB drive, then you're all set. Otherwise, you'd need a FW interface, found on most enclosures.
You can use Super Duper! without paying first, but you don't get the scheduling option. You can do everything else.
For the external drive, use Disk Utilty, select your external disk, Choose partition, choose 1 partition (if you want one), select Options, and choose GUID partition table. Then click apply. It has to be GUID to boot with Intel Macs.
So say you get your computer back wiped. You boot from your external drive, launch Super Duper, then copy the clone back to your internal drive, and you are back to where you left off. No loss of data. I've used SuperDuper! for a couple years now and it's saved my life a couple times.

  • When I apply a wallpaper only to the lock screen the shadow behind the slider disappears.

Since i updated to iOS 4.3 i have this issue. When I set a wallpaper to both home screen & lock screen the shadow behind the slider appears, but if i set a background to eighter lock or home screen, the shadow disappears. Is there a way I can fix this?

Well, i noticed this "issue" on my iPhone (4S, iOS 5.1.1) today. And since I found it also on my other iPhone (3GS, iOS 5.1), I think that it is not an issue but intention.

  • When I touch the "photos" icon on my 4th gen iPod Touch, I get a page entitled "Albums" - it's white, with many lines.  At the very top of the screen, almost shadowed behind the word "albums" I can see the thumbnail of my album.  But I can't access it.

I need help viewing my photos on my 4th gen iPod Touch.  When I choose the "photos" icon, I get a screen called "albums".  At the top of the screen, sort of shadowed behind the word "albums" I can see a thumbnail of where my pictures are.  What can I do to get back my "old" view of my pictures?
    Thanks.
    Judy

Bring up the Multitask bar by double clicking on the home button, search for the photo app icon, tap on it until it starts to shake, hit the minus icon in the left corner to close the app.
Close the task bar again and start the photo app again, this time it should work.

  • Pearl has dust behind the screen

I dont know how it happened, but my pearl has dust behind the screen. Does anyone
know how to remove the screen so I can clean it.
    Thanks,
    Joe

Joe, If the phone is out of warrantee and/or do don't want to go through the enormous hassle of replacing your blackberry there is another alternative. I have done this several times myself but I would recommend that you be mechanically inclined. Although the surgery is very easy some blackberry models have retention clips that need to be pushed aside with a very smal screw driver like one you would buy for repairing sunglasses etc. I do not have a pearl so I am not much help giving you specifics about that particular phone..
Go to ebay and look for cellular phone repair tools. There are dozens of sellers, just look for a Torx kit. Inside the battery compartment you will find four torx screws that you will need to remove. Once they are removed the back of the phone pops off. Depending on your model the phones sometimes come apart in layers (like the 8700). So after the first layer you may need to remove more torx screws to get inside to the screen. Be careful when splitting the phone apart as small pieces will be loose inside like the volume and push to talk buttons. You will need to careful put these back in place when re-assembling the phone. Once the phone is split apart you should easily be able to clean the screen and the inside from dust. Just use an old tooth brush.
Although this whole procedure is not overly difficult for me, it is not for everyone. So please proceed with caution and under your own risk.
On another note this is the same procedure if your phone ever get water damage. I have a neighbor that thought it was hilarious to throw people into the pool during a drunkin haze (thankfully he stopped drinking...). Twice he did it to me with my phone still firmly attached to my waist. After doing a terrific impression of a Marlin trying to shake a fisherman's hook my phone still had water pouring from it and vibrating like crazy. I immediately took out the battery and took the phone completely apart. I then set all the parts EXCEPT THE LCD and the CLEAR PLASTIC WINDOW on a cookie sheet.  All you are trying to do is dry the electronics. Cell phones are all rated for fairly high temperatures  in case you were to leave it in the car on a hot summer afternoon. I then set the oven to preheat at 150 degrees. Once it was preheated I turned the oven off and let sit for a minute with the door cracked. Then I put the cookie sheet into the oven and closed the door. I let it sit until the oven had completely cooled down. Re-assembled the phone and presto it worked just fine until the next time he threw me in. If you want to be completely safe you can put the unassembled phone on your car dash which works as well. So long as there is little humidity and good amount of heat but not above 200 degrees.
    Good luck...

  • Dust Behind the Screen

Hi I have the 2006 Intel 20in iMAC, and I have Dust particles that got behind the screen, Let me see if I can explain this well enough, They are behind the screen, and it looks as if something is On the screen, like a Smudge, but really if you look close it's behind the display like in between the screen and the backlight, is there a Way to take it apart and clean it ?? I've taken this iMAC apart many time's to dust it out, and to change my Hard Drive, so I know what I'm doing when it comes to taking it apart, I just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem, I tend to carry the Computer with me allot, in my iLUGGER Carrying case, so I'm assuming that's how the Dust gets In-Between the screen. Just wanted to know if there is any Take-Apart Tutorials just for the screen itself ? Or if one of those Can's of AIR would somehow get it out ?

    hi

  • Any application to colour the screen behind the keypad of the phone call numbers ?

    Hello, please need help.
With ios7 newly downloaded, is there any function  to change the coulour of the screen behind the keypad of the phone call numbers.
Its too much white actually and unseenable while outsite or in day light.
Thank you for you help.  ? Ci Kay

Note that this simply identifies the device, not the user. So if a user sells or gives away his device if you use this mechanism the new owner will be able to access anything from the old owner.
Additionally, you also need to handle device replacement-- i.e. owner takes device in for repair, gets a new device how do you disassociate the information from the old device and associate it with the new device and ensure that whomever gets the old device as a refurb does not have access.
