  • Screen Scrape an Applet

I am working on a project that requires a good bit of HTML screen scaping.
I would like to read the contents of a page , post to it etc. For this purpose, I use HTTPURLConnection class.
One of the pages I would like to screen scrape, has an applet. I would like to read the contents of the applet in my java program. Could some help me get started on that?
It seems that I would need to mimick a web browser in my code. Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks

Well, you wanna do something like this:
    URLClassLoader loader = new URLClassLoader(...);
    Applet applet = (Applet) loader.loadClass("AppletName", true).newInstance();
    applet.setStub(new YourStub());
//add Applet to a component so you can see it
    applet.init();
applet.start();I don't know if it works though.

  • How can i clear a screen in java applet?

i'm searching a method to clear a applet completely before i repaint... i know that repaint normaly overwrite what was there before but bacause that was not allowed in my program i made de repaint just paint stuff...
but now i'm searching a way to clear the aplet before i repaint something like clear()? does it exist?

Do you override the update method? if so, don't. Update normally 1st clears, 2nd calls paint.
Or you can call a g.drawRect(0,0,width,height) with the color of your background at the top of your paint() method.

  • Java Applet Bar on Bottom of Screen

I get a bar on the bottom of my screen when on pages that require Java, " Java Applet Started" is typical. Folks I've asked about this say they aren't getting it. What is the cause and what is the solution? I'm using Windows XP, and this most often occurs in Yahoo's game rooms, if this helps with determining what's up. Thanks for the help on this one. Please send replies to:

I'm not sure which you are talking about, but it's 1 of 3 things:
    1) The applet is not signed, and it opens a Java frame or dialog and there is a message at the bottom of that which says something about it being a Java Window.
    2) The bottom of the browser has a status bar, which says that the applet started. This is just a status bar in the browser has. Some browsers let you hide it, but it otherwise is the same bar that shows the URL when you mouse over a link or gives loading status of pages (loading..., done).
    3) If it only happens on certain sites, then this is some custom page/applet design thing explicitly done by the site designer.

  • Java applet (pre)loading screen

    Hello everyone,
As a java programmer I was wondering if it is possible to customize the java loading screen (Which runs before opening a java applet). It doesn't look really nice when a customised applet is running, but the viewers first get the orange java loading object.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
    Thanks in advance.

I never tried, but there seems to be an applet image parameter like in
this example I found on the web:
    <APPLET code=Wave.class width=200 height=80>
         <PARAM name=image value="email.gif">
         <PARAM name=mailto value="[email protected]">
</APPLET>I also read that for best effects, the image size should match the applet size.

  • Portal SSO to a Java Applet

    Hello,
I have a customer that is looking to set up SSO with an application that uses a Java Applet as its login screen to the app.
Any advice on how this can be set up. SSO via External Application doesn't seem to work since it doesn't use a GET or POST method.
    Thank You!
    Padmini

An applet (with normal security setup) can only open up socket connections to the host from whence the applet came. Sounds like your applet is trying to talk to port 5000 on the client's box. Can't do that, unless:
    a) The client's box is the server (which is the case under your first scenario)
    b) The applet is signed or otherwise set up to be "trusted" that it doesn't contain harmful code.
The security policy is there for a reason. I, for example, wouldn't want to stumble across some rogue applet out on the internet which then tries to open up socket connections to things on my corporate intranet or local machine -- unless I KNEW it was going to do that (I "trust" it).

  • Problem Launching Java Applet with Plug-in: Version 1.4.2_01

    Hello out there:
I recently installed j2re-1.4.2_01 on my home computer but have been unable to access Web sites emmploying JAva applets. The following is an email exchange with Jeff Hall of Lowell Observatory, manager of an educational site hosted by Lowell, trying to resolve my problem. The messages are better understood if read in reverse order.
I'm hoping that someone will recognize the source of my problem and can recommmend a solution. I would appreciate any help offered.
    Thanks,
    Mike Coucke
    Hi Jeff:
Well, I guess the problem lies with me somewhere. Here's my answer/status to your questions/suggestions:
    1) I'm using MS Windows Me version 4.90.3000
    2) I do have the directory C:\Windows\.jpi_cache\jar\, but the only thing in it is an empty folder labeled "1.0". The file LP.jar does not exist anywhere on my hard drive.
    3) I tried several game sites that utilized Java applets and got the same results: the Java cup in the upper left corner followed a few seconds later by the red "X". So, evidently the problem is somewhere on my end.
I'm going to post our email exchanges in a Java Users Forum managed by Sun to see if anyone out there can solve my problem. However, if you have any more suggestions, I'll be glad to try them.
    Thanks for the help.

    Mike,
Rats! What version of Windows are you using? It's a little strange to
see the user directory set to C:\Windows; if you're using XP, I'd expect
it to be something like C:\Documents and Settings\Mike Coucke. In any
event, the output that is of concern is these two lines:
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: LPRemote.class
    Caused by: java.net.UnknownHostException: proxy
It looks like your browser is not finding our server's IP when it comes
time to download the necessary Java code.
LPRemote.class is the fundamental code that runs LOPARC, and your
browser should be downloading it automatically when you click connect.
LPRemote.class is stored along with a bunch of other classes in a file
called "LP.jar" that you download from our server. So, if you go to C:
in Windows Explorer and do a file search for LP.jar, you should find it.
On my machine, it's stored in a directory called ".jpi_cache\jar\" in my
user home directory. Let me know if you have this file, or the
    jpi-cache directory.
One other thing you might try is going to a different site that you know
uses Java applets -- I think some of the online game rooms at Yahoo use
Java. See if other sites that use Java load correctly. Then we'll know
if it's our server specifically, or a more general problem on your end.

    Hello Jeff:
I still have the Java "blues". I followed your instructions, but am still unable to launch a LOPARC session. After an initial failure, I uninstalled all three Java versions I had (1.4.0, 1.4.1, 1.4.2), then reinstalled 1.4.2_01 from the Sun website.
Now, when I try to launch LOPARC, I initially get a blank window with the Java cup in the upper left corner. After about 20 seconds, the cup changes to a red "X". During those 20 seconds, the following appear in the IE message bar at the bottom of the window: "Applet LPRemote notinited" (their spelling) which changes to "Loading Java Applet Failed..." when the red "X" appears.
Following is a copy of the log from my Java Console during all of this:

    Hi Mike,
Try it now. I think this problem has arisen because Sun just
released a new version of the Plug-in (1.4.2), and when we released the
public beta of LOPARC, only one relevant version (1.4.0) was available
and the LOPARC code was written to look for that by default. I have
just recoded the relevant routines so they should now cause your browser
to simply pick up the latest 1.4 version of the Plug-in you have
installed, whatever it is. I "broke" Java on my machine to replicate
your problem, and the code I inserted today did fix it. Hopefully it
will have the same effect for you. I am running IE 6 and plugin
1.4.2_01 (as accessed via Tools->Sun Java Console).
One broader problem: some (non-LOPARC-specific) users on the Sun
forums have reported the "JRE collision" you are seeing when multiple
versions of the Plug-in are installed on the same machine. So if the
fix I made to our code doesn't work, one option would be to uninstall
all Java components from your computer and do a fresh install of the
    latest runtime environment.
Let me know how/if this works. Thanks for the feedback and for your
    patience.
    Best regards,

    Hello Jeff:
So far, I have been unable to launch a LOPARC session. I repeatedly
    get the following error message:
    "Exception: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: LPRemote.class"
My browser is MS Internet Explorer version 6.0.2800.1106 Initially I was
using Java Plug-In version 1.4.1 and received the error message. I went
to the Sun website and downloaded/installed Java Plug-In version 1.4.2
    and still get the message.
Before I try to launch LOPARC, I can select Tools->Sun Java Console from
IE's pull down menu to check my Java Plug-In version. When I try to
launch LOPARC, I get the following message:
"Applet(s) in this HTML page requires a version of Java different from
the one the browser is currently using. In order to run the applet(s)

message: "Java Plug-in detected JRE collission"
If I select 'Yes', a new browser window opens and then I get the first
    message above.
    Can you help?

    Dear Michael Coucke:
Thank you for registering with Lowell Observatory's online education
site. We hope you enjoy using it and visit regularly as we continue to
expand its features and capabilities. This is a one-time welcoming
    email.
For your records, your user ID is xxxxx, and your password is #########.
You'll need to supply these each time you log in.
This site gives you access to research-grade equipment including a 16"
telescope, CCD detector, and image processing software. Our online
archive of data is now available 24/7. The telescope will be opening to
our onsite users in May, and on select nights to the Internet at large
    in June.
We have designed this site so you don't need a huge monitor or a
supercomputer to use it. All pages are viewable on screens running at
800x600 resolution or higher. To use LOPARC, you'll need a Java-enabled
browser with the Java 1.4 plug-in installed. If you don't have the
plug-in, you'll be prompted to download it the first time you attempt to
connect. This is an admittedly large (9 MB) but one-time-only download.
This site works correctly under Internet Explorer version 5 or higher.
If you use Netscape, you must be running version 6 or higher, and
display or applet behavior anomalies may occur.
If at any time you can't connect to our server, simply try again later.
We do experience several power outages each year, particularly during
Flagstaff's summer thunderstorm season. Our server is fully protected
and backed up, and can be quickly brought back on line, but any active
user sessions will be lost. Thanks for your patience during these
    inevitable downtimes.
Your questions, comments, suggestions, and bug reports about this site
are always welcome. On behalf of the LOPARC development team, thanks
    for signing up!

    Hi Mike,
I see this in your logs:
    Java(TM) Plug-in: Version 1.4.2_01
Using JRE version 1.4.2_01 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
    User home directory = C:\WINDOWS
    Proxy Configuration: Manual Configuration
    Proxy: http=proxy,https=proxy,ftp=proxy,gopher=proxy
    Proxy Overrides:
I just helped my Dad set up his computer with a new
cable modem, and had the situation where we couldn't
access any secure Web sites. The cable folks had us
disable the proxy. It looks like the error message is
saying it can't find your proxy server, and the logs
you posted say that you've decided to configure your
proxy manually, rather than using the settings from
IE (which is how mine is set up in the plugin

  • Removing the 'Warning Java Applet' Status Bar

    Hi,
I've written an applet that does not require access outside the sandbox so doesn't need signing. However, it pops up an instance of Window, and because it's not signed the window has a status bar across the bottom which says 'Warning Java Applet' or something similar depending on the browser. Is there any way to remove this status bar without signing the applet or changing the security settings of the browser. I guess it must be added to the window so maybe it's just a component that can be removed, but how?
    Thanks in advance

Today the Security Warning sign appeared at the bottom of my computer screen - how do I get rid of it. I do have Java whose icon used to be in the lower right hand section of my screen - along with all the other icon programs that I have.
Now the icon is no longer down on the bottom right of the screen, but in the middle with a Security Warning -(the wording) next to the jave icon.
This is really annoying me - how can I get rid of it, and - why did it appear here?
    Anxiously awaiting your reply.
    Donna

  • Java applet shows boxes instead of text

I'm helping a friend with a new PC. He likes to work the crosswords at washingtonpost.com, which are embedded java applets. For what ever reason, all the clues just show up as boxes where the text should be. This screen shot should help:
    http://members.cox.net/rtadams89/screen.png
As you can see, all the "clues", and the crossword title just show boxes where letters should be. Other text (that which you type into the crossword) as well as text in java apps on other sites shows up fine. I've tried reinstalling the java run time environment, as well as clearing the browser files and checking internet explorer settings. Any other suggestions?

I'm still not having any luck with this. I've reinstalled Java, and also check the internet explorer settings. Nothing seems to be wrong as other sites work just fine. Could this be a missing font issue?

  • Java Applet 6 crashes after Apple update in Firefox 8

After my update in Apple a day ago, my Java (6.0version) and Firefox 8 do not mix. I can't open a second window without Firefox crashing.
I have also "tested" my Java on the Java website and it says Java's working, then when I hit the back button, it crashes again.
I know other Mac users are having this issue using the OS X v.10.6.8. (Google it)
Now, Apple points the finger at Firefox, who all know about this "bug" and they in return accuse Apple of the Java release not working with their new Firefox. I am stuck in the middle trying to figure out a way to get this resolved.
Can someone please help?  Who's fault is this? I would have not updated these two (which were working wonderfully before the upgrade!)  So frustrating! I have included how to test the crash error:
    Steps to reproduce:
This happens with Firefox 8.0 and Mac OS X 10.6.8 and java version "1.6.0_29"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_29-b11-402-10M3527).
    Visit
    http://java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp
wait for the java applet to load and display the JRE info. Close the tab and firefox crashes.
I have also included a copy of my console file list messages in the diagnostic section re: Firefox. Hope this helps, thank you to all who reply.

Okay, funny how I don't know a whole lot about computers but I did quite a lot of research on this and found the fix for this Java (6.0) problem.
FIrefox said it probably was the Apple release of the new Java that conflicted with it's newest release, though I had to read about it on their bugzilla.mozilla.org website to find out more.
Firefox released a fix for the 8.0 (now version 8.0.1) to help with Java and Roboform platform on their FTP Server.
You can't do the update through "about Firefox" on your pull down tabs and click "check for updates" because that won't work.
You can go to this link for an explanation and download link:
    http://browserfame.com/309/firefox-801-browser-crash-fix-roboform-apple-java-upd ate-mac-osx
A window with files will pop up. Choose your OS....Mac-for OSX users,  then more files come on the next screen, Choose - "en-US" for US english, if that is your Firefox program version.
I hope this helps anybody who had this frustrating problem. I know Apple is committed to Safari browser but they wouldn't suggest or even give an probable answer about this and I had to scramble scratching my head to find the answer myself....sad.

  • CONSTANT Java Applet Problems, HELP!

Alright, since I've had my mac, Java has never worked properly. I have the latest version of OSX and of Java, I tried repairing permissions and also tried manually installing the latest OSX update, but whenever a website uses the Java Applet (for a game / chatroom, etc.) It will never load, or it will freeze the computer while attempting to load.
I used to use Safari but now use Firefox.. Java doesn't work in either. This is a screen shot of what happens after a few seconds of waiting for this game to load:

    Several issues
    1) Don't paint in the JApplet itself. Instead paint in a JPanel and override its paintComponent method, not its paint method. In fact you would do well to create the GUI in this JPanel and then add the JPanel to the JApplet's contentPane.
    2) Don't override update and don't call update.
    3) The first line of your paintComponent(Graphics g) override should be a call to super.paintComponent(g)
    4) I would strongly urge you to not use NetBeans to generate your Swing code. By doing this, you're hampering your Swing education.
    5) You really shouldn't be adding a MouseListener to a JButton. Instead you add ActionListener's to buttons.
    Good luck and HTH

  • Problem running Java applets since Java update 2 (1.6.0_20)

    Hi,
Since I upgraded to Java update 2, Java applets started having problems. The most noticeable ones are:
Non-modal windows appear behing the browser Window (tested Safari 4, 5, Chrome 5).
Double buffering not working as usual (slower, white boxes appear when dragging a window, etc.)
    Slower rendering in general
The same applications run perfectly using Java Web Start. And they used to work very well also in Java update 1.
The application can be tested here (press ok if a login prompt appears):
    Java applet: http://jmap3.k2geospatial.com/montreal_applet/
    Java Web Start: http://jmap3.k2geospatial.com/montreal_jws/dockingClient.jnlp
Our applications running in applets use the new plug-in 2 with JNLP files.
Notice the Java startup splash (the animated sun-like logo) is not moving as smoothly as usual. It is very jerky now.
Are these problems known by anyone?
How can I downgrade Java to previous version?
sorry I cross-posted this in Unix forum also. I think it is better here.
    Thank you,
    Jean-Robert

Since the last Java update on mac, all my OpenGL applets stop working and now just shows a white screen on Chrome, Firefox and Opera. They was working well on all browsers (Safari/WebKit,Chrome,Firefox,Opera) just before the update.
The trouble maker seem to be the java plugin 2 and the new offscreen rendering pipeline, as reported by jrhaddad with the disucssion linked to the different Java/OpenGL community forums.
This is a huge regression for me, and I think for all hobbies/ independent developers and all companies who are doing some Java/OpenGL develoment. All our work just stop working since this update.
If would really want to know from Apple if they are working on this problem and/or how this can be solved.
Should this be fixed by Apple with a new java update, or should the various browsers must upgrade their applet support plugins according to the new java plugin 2 changes ?
    Best Regards,
    Jérôme
