ScreenSaver prevents me from logging in, never get login prompt

My Mac Pro, Leopard 10.5.2 installed wouldn't let me login today. It was in screensaver mode, and wouldn't come out of it,
When I hit a key or moved the mouse to get the login prompt, the screensaver paused as if the login prompt was going to appear, but then the screensaver kicked back in.
I could SSH into the machine and run commands, but killing ScreenSave or Finder or anything else I could think of wouldn't fix the problem.
Finally I just had to issue the rude "reboot" command.
Any ideas what happened here, or more importantly how I might avoid having to reboot to get back in in the future?

This seems to be related to the preference pane for accounts, which will no longer let me make modifications as an adminstrator to any other accounts or login information. The little lock to authenticate just says "authenticating...." then goes back to being locked.
Probably should post a new topic, but any ideas?

  • Mail is preventing me from logging out - Help!

    Hello,
Mail is preventing me from logging out.  I freqently have to force quit, any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix?

If you're sharing the computer with your husband and you have separate accounts, you should open the Users & Groups preference pane, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then click Login Options and check the box marked Show fast user switching menu... That will relieve the need for either of you to log out whenever the other wants to use the computer. Just select your user name from the menu next to the Spotlight (magnifying glass) icon on the right side of the menu bar.
As for the Mail problem, try the procedure below first.
    Back up all data.
    1. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu. A folder may open, or you may get an error message that the item can't be found. Either result is normal. If the folder does open and has contents, move the contents to the Desktop. Relaunch Mail and test. If there's no change, put the contents of the folder back and quit Mail again.
    2. Repeat with this line:
    /Library/Mail/Bundles
This time you may be prompted for your login password when you remove the items. Make sure they're removed from the folder and not just copied to the Desktop. If necessary, copy them first and then move the originals to the Trash.

  • Username automatically converts to lowercase, preventing me from logging in.

When I enter my username to login, Firefox automatically changes it to all lower case, so instead of FLastname, it becomes flastname. This prevents me from logging in, since the username is case sensitive. This did not happen until I upgraded to 3.6.11 from, I assume, 3.6.10. For reference I'm using Os X 10.4.11

  • I'd sure like to know what the problem is with HP preventing me from logging-in to Passport/Forums

This is a problem I've been chasing, looking for a solution, since I registered my computer in January 2013. In spite of registering under about 5-6 different user IDs and passwords, I'm never able to get logged-in. I have disabled all security and autofill options, deleted all cookies, lowered my security settings to minimum, and changed internet settings. I've even used the Forgot Password link and answered all questions but I'm always sent back to the log-in page and it either recycles back to the log-in page or tells me the user id or password is incorrect. Over a month ago, CalvinP said the issue had been escalated. To where? I've not had any attempts to contact me or anything. I'm really sorry I decided to stay in the HP family. Got to be the lousiest support going. Why doesn't Ms Whitman do something about the obvious indifference to the people that has made HP what it is? Does anyone, not associated with HP, have any ideas? Believe me, I will not purchase another HP product.
    This question was solved.

  • IMessages sent from Mountain Lion never get delivered

I had been using this feature for quite a while, but it stopped working inexplicably a couple of weeks ago.  I've upgraded all my iOS devices to iOS6.  I have all devices usign the same iCloud account and all of them set to send and receive from my iCloud email address (instead of the phone number).  All devices receive messages properly.  iOS devices send messages properly.  Only the Mac can't send messages.  Any ideas?

    Hi,
There is never any feedback from Apple on things like this.
    You can supply feedback http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html
Although this does need you to give Version number and OS in the free text field. (it has never managed to be correct, at the right time,  since iChat 3).
It appears when things reach a critical mass then Apple add it to the developer's seed version of Updates to the OS.
Then sometimes you hear rumours.  That's about as close as it gets  - but discussing rumours here is not allowed and is likely to get s post if not the whole thread deleted from public view.
The most I have seen in other threads in people have managed to escalate their issue via Apple Care to level two and above Support people who eventually have revealed it is a "Known Issue"
Version OS X 10.8.2 was supposed to include an update that was supposed to help with this on waking a computer that was Asleep.

  • Encore WT8 touch screen won't work, prevents me from logging in

I have just bought this tablet but it is a Dabs refurbished model, so not sure of its history. I went through the setup process and brought it on holiday. I discovered that once it was setup, every time it went into sleep mode or was powered off, the touch screen became unresponsive after it powered back up. I don't have an OTG cable, or a keyboard/mouse for that matter. In a small town where it won't be possible to buy one. May just have to wait until I get back and can use a cable and keyboard to log in. Not sure what the pattern is but from time to time, it has reacted to touch and allowed me to log in. When it did, I performed all windows updates, including drivers that were suggested. I have an old XP laptop which I am using now and once when I plugged it in via USB, it got the screen working for long enough to let me log in but that won't work now.  I tried to log in from my Lumia using RDP but it says it can't. May just be the version of 8.1 that's on the tablet.  I can get into the BIOS menu and the touch screen works in there. It is at V2.00 and the tablet is a PDW0AE-00900PEN Any other suggestions or should I give up and enjoy my holiday?

The screen rotates as normal. I tried resetting the device but it doesn't work. In the device manager, it shows that the I2C HID device has a problem. It fails to start. This doesn't change after a reset. I dug a little deeper and the driver is hidi2c.sys. There doesn't seem to be a newer version of the driver. I did some reading and found people commenting that Toshiba aren't very good at fixing this sort of driver issue. it also may be that a windows update has caused a conflict which may be fixed by Microsoft. Either way, I can't see any way for me to fix this besides resetting my tablet to factory and preventing windows updates. I may do that once I am somewhere with more resources around me.

  • Having problem with svchost.exe/ntdll.dll errors causing GPSVC (Group Policy Client) to crash preventing users from logging into the server.

Recently (within the past 2 weeks) I have noticed a few of our servers will have problems with the svchost.exe application causing the GPSVC (Group Policy Client) to crash. The only fix at that point is to reboot the server since the GPSVC service is tied
to svchost.exe and therefore is protected from being manually restarted.

I've searched and cannot seem to find any information as to what may be causing this, or even really where to start. Would someone be able to help me identify what might be causing this event, specific with the Exception code: 0xc0000024, which causes
the Group Policy Client service to stop?

You still out there looking at things? If so I have an update. The issue hasn't stopped, even though it did seemingly die down for awhile, however, it is now back with a vengeance.
I am able to force it to happen by killing the svchost process that is hosting GPSVC. If I run gpupdate /force, then logout/login it does get GPSVC running again. Furthermore, if I simply start svchost again via the Task Manager GPSVC starts running again.
When I access the server remotely with KVM it acts just like it does as if I'm logging into it via Citrix/RDP which for Admin IDs gives an error saying "Failed to connect to a windows service. Windows could not connect to the Group Policy Client service...",
however, normal user accounts just get a message when logging into the server "The Group Policy Client Service Failed the Logon. Access is denied."
I haven't opened a case with Microsoft yet, but we about ready to because of the increase in these errors.
If you have any further suggestions that would be great, otherwise I'll provide an update once I get word back from Microsoft.
**EDIT -- apparently I mistook the the server's SCM's actions as my own. I was able to successfully crash the GPSVC service by killing the hosting svchost process, however, after I crashed it and let it sit crashed for awhile when I attempted
to restart either by starting a svchost task, or running gpupdate /force it failed. Either that, or there is a timing issue where if we don't restart the svchost process, or run gpupdate /force quickly enough it won't be able to recover without a reboot.

  • How do I prevent users from logging into my machine in single user mode?

I established an standard accounts for my family.  My son figured out that if he logs into the machine in Single User mode that he logs in as the root user.  He then proceeded to create another user with administrative privileges and change his account to administrator then delete the other account.  Funny thing about this is that as much as OS X is secure from outside threats a simple command-s gets you right into the very heart of the machine......

You can set a firmware password. The firmware password only allows you to start up in normal mode, so if you try to start in single-mode user or safe mode, your Mac will ask you for a password.
The process to turn it on depends on the OS X version you have. Open  > About this Mac, check the Mac OS X version and follow the steps depending on your OS X version.
If you have 10.7 or 10.8:
    1. Hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting up.
    2. After starting up into OS X Utilities, go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Firmware Password Utility, and enable the firmware password.
    3. Restart the Mac.
If you have 10.6 or older:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X disc and hold the C key while your Mac is starting up.
    2. Choose your language, go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Firmware Password Utility, and enable the firmware password.
    3. Restart the Mac.
Also, this will protect your Mac against thieves because they won't be able to erase the hard drive without knowing the firmware password. Don't forget the password, because only Apple can reset it if you don't know this password

  • Bluetooth Setup Assistant is preventing me from logging on.

I am currently using my older iMac in conjunction with my Macbook so that I can reply in Mail which is something I have not been able to do on my Macbook since downloading Mavericks in December.  (Yes, I've tried to fix that and have spent hours and hours and HOURS on it.) The older version of Mail on the iMac still works as it should, so I'm toggling between two computers.
Now, however, when I turn on the older iMac the Bluetooth Setup Assistant window pops up before I can log in and tells me there is no wireless keyboard connected.  That would be because the keyboard and the mouse are both wired.  For a while, when I unplugged and then replugged them into the USB port, the Bluetooth window would disappear, but not anymore.  I have tried Alt-Apple-escape.... no luck.  I have tried reboothing the computer and holding down C.... no luck.  I have been able to activate the mouse (sometime yes, sometimes no), but it's unable to access the Blue Tooth window/box to close it, or log me in.  It just moves around.  The box/window the message is in is not accessible. I can't close it, minimize it or do anything else with it.
I have shut down all my bluetooth devices on my iMac, moved the wired keyboard closer (someone suggested that in an earlier post and although it didn't make sense if it's a wire connecting it); when I was able to log in earlier I closed the Bluetooth preference.... I don't know what else to do.
I would really, really appreciate someone's help. I publish.  This is deadline. I'm very behind in my work.  I'm already jumping through hoops with the Mail issue.
I don't remember the iMac's OS X and can't get in to see it because of the Blue Tooth window. This is the old computer I'm not supposed to have to use anymore....
    I found the OS X  It's 10.6.8

  • Redirector prevents computer from logging onto network

I am using Desktop Manager v4.7. Ever since I upgraded from v4.6 to v4.7, the redirector tries to launch and connect to the network before my desktop computer is able to do so. To make matters worse, the computer wont log onto the network because the redirector is trying to log onto it.
Finally, the redirector crashes at which point the computer is able to log onto the network. However, by then, the redirector wont try to log onto the network again, and my emails are not forwarded to my blackberry.
Thus, is it possible to have the redirector wait until the computer has logged onto the network before it tries launch itself?
    Your help is greatly appreciated.

    OK, MnJim,
Then in that case, if your disabling the SSID, you'll need to type in the SSID manually each time since I don't believe that Airport on the Mac can find an SSID to automatically connect to, if the SSID is not being broadcast.
So it almost seems like you're between a rock and a hard place. Don't want to type the SSID in order to 'find' it? Then don't disable it.
    Also:
With the SSID broadcast disabled, if there is another access point within range that is broadcasting, systems will automatically switch to the access point that's broadcasting its SSID. This happens even if you didn't list that broadcasting system as a preferred network and you've listed the access point that's not broadcasting as preferred.
    and:
    http://www.netstumbler.org/archive/index.php/t-11738.html
    and:
    http://forums.wi-fiplanet.com/archive/index.php/t-1293.html
It seems as if it's "to-may-to", "to-mah-to". A serious hacker will find a way to find your SSID, broadcasted or not. Disabling it simply makes your life more of a hassle.
    ...for what it's worth...
Anyone else find other factoids to support 'disabling', or a better way to keep the connection 'automatic' without an publicized SSID ?

  • Virus preventing users from logging in?

Over the weekend our anti-virus began sending out alerts about blocked web traffic, This morning when I came in I looked at the computer, when I got to his desk the user was trying and failing to login. Having locked out his account with so many failed attempts I used my credentials to login and was told my username and password was incorrect (I verified multiple times I hadn't miss typed anything). I went back to my desk and used RDP to connect and login. Ran multiple virus scans and cleaned around 50 viruses. I am still unable to login using correct credentials. Are the login issues related to the amount of viruses or are they just coincidentally.
