Screwed up /etc/group & /etc/gshadow?

I'm getting some odd errors, as posted here, and a [fail] on boot about checking password integrity. I think I haven't updated my group & gshadow files correctly. here they are:

btw, when group.pacnew and gshadow.pacnew arrive, how do I know how to merge them with the old ones?

  • [SOLVED] Today's update of /etc/group, /etc/passwd and /etc/gshadow

    Hello,
    During the regular updates I received an update of /etc/groups. I wonder what I should do here, as there are some differences between the old file and the pacnew one. I suppose that when I use the command to add my user to a group, it gets written into this file. So, just recklessly moving the pacnew file in the place of the old one, will mess up all my groups, won't it?
    Then what should I do? All the entries in the pacnew file are also present in the old one, so I guess I could just delete the pacnew one and keep the old one. Am I right?
    EDIT: The same goes to /etc/passwd and /etc/gshadow.

    If you had the uuid user before like me the uuid line in your own files is different from the pacnew file. You have to delete the uuid line near the bottom in your old file. Then insert the new uuid entry including the new number in the place near the top suggested by the pacnew file. Keep the other lines untouched, then save your changes and delete the pacnew files.
    Edit: On a system that has actually been modified from a default install the new files will for sure be different to the old ones.
    Thanks, teateawhy!  I currently have this listed in /etc/passwd:
    uuidd:x:998:998::/:/sbin/nologin
    And this is in the .pacnew file:
    uuidd:x:68:68:uuidd:/:/sbin/nologin
    So, I can just copy the entry from the .pacnew file, overwriting the old entry, right?
    What I don't understand is how the two numbers 998 representing the UID and GID can suddenly change to 68.  Shouldn't they have to correspond with some other reference or list of users/groups...?
    I'm sure it's fine to just replace the entry as you suggested, but I wondered if there was a way to double-check which uid/gid should be used?  It's not that I don't trust you, but I don't fully understand how these group/passwd files work and I'm trying to get my head round it all.

  • [SOLVED] Files in /etc with a dash after them (e.g. /etc/group-)

    Hi,
    What are the files in /etc with a dash after them? For example, I have:
    /etc/group
    /etc/group-
    /etc/gshadow
    /etc/gshadow-
    /etc/shadow
    /etc/shadow-
    What are the dashed versions for? Do I need to keep them?
    Last edited by jwhendy (2010-10-25 21:47:13)

    AFAIK, they are a backup of the previous copy of the file (eg, passwd- is what passwd was before the last change). They are kept because they are such important files. You can delete them, but backups are a "good thing"™.

  • Deleted my /etc/groups and /etc/gshadow and now no mouse and keyboard.

    Hey.
    So a few days ago I updated my system and did something we all know to avoid. I accidently moved the empty .pacnew files over my groups and gshadow files so my entire group layout is out of the window. I am an idiot I know. My mom told me that when I was six. So I am now looking at fixing my system. My biggest problem is that now xorg runs but the keyboard and mouse don't respownd. This isn't a USB problem since I tried using non USB keyboard. In runlevel 3 keyboard works fine.
    Xorg.log says something about input bring used by someone else  so my guess based on the above is that what I need to do is restore my old groups since its probably a group ownership problem. My question is if anyone knows which groups should I restore and how does one go about repairing the Damage? I would be thankfully to anyone who would take the time saving me from my own stupidity.

    This might be the solution. Perhaps I should post my /etc/group file and you can fix yours? I don't know, did you ensure that all your groups have the correct GID?

  • [SOLVED] /etc/group or /etc/gshadow are inconsistent, grpck shows " ".

    After updating, pacman said
    ==> Warning: /etc/group or /etc/gshadow are inconsistent.
    but when running grpck there was no output.
    I would guess this means everything is OK. Is this the case?
    In case it matters, these are my /etc/group and /etc/gshadow.

  • [Solved] Questions about /etc/group and /etc/gshadow

    This morning, package filesystem was upgraded to 2015.02-1 and pacnew files were created for /etc/group and /etc/gshadow. I ran diff against my current files, and the differences seem very minor, to me. I need some guidance to understand whether I should implement the pacnew changes.
    The only significant difference I see in the group file is that in my original version, my username is added to the wheel group. This seems correct, to me.
    For gshadow, there is the same difference for wheel. However, there are several entries where my original entry contains an exclamation point, but the new version does not. For example:
    < proc:!::
    > proc:::
    If I run man /etc/gshadow, it does not give me what I understand as a man page, and gives me what appears to be a listing of the stuff in my /etc/gshadow file, instead. Which does not help me.
    So, like I say, I need some guidance on dealing with these pacnew files.
    Tim
    PS - I now see that "man gshadow" gives me an actual man page. Sorry. I am currently studying it.

    After the update to filesystem 2015.02-1 some voices in /etc/gshadow were changed (in the pacnew file) from
    systemd-journal-gateway:!::
    systemd-timesync:!::
    systemd-network:!::
    systemd-bus-proxy:!::
    systemd-resolve:!::
    to
    systemd-journal-gateway:::
    systemd-timesync:::
    systemd-network:::
    systemd-bus-proxy:::
    systemd-resolve:::
    What's the change? Before they had a locked password (the ! sign) and now they haven't?

  • /etc/group and /etc/passwd corrupted

    My /etc/group and /etc/passwd (and possibly others) are corrupted (my silly error handling pacnew files). I tried restoring the backups (group- and similar) and also ran grpconv, pwdconv,, pwck without fixing things.  I've edited the files, using those in another machine as a template but no luck.
    Various commands (e.g. ssh) fail with the message:
                                     No user exists for uid 1000
    Before I give up and reinstall, is there any way I can restore things to how they should be?

    Thanks for replies. I can't recreate my user because it's already there. I can log in as ac without difficulty and do most things - just a few (mportant) fail.
    I don't understand why it keeps saying the user ac is uid 1000. After reading the wikis I think my /etc/group and /etc/passwd are correct. /etc/passwd has:
                ac:x:1000:100::/home/ac:/bin/bash
    and /etc/group has:
               users:x:100:ac
               ac:x:100:ac
    I'm not sure the last line should be there, but removing it doesn't help. The entries on a second machine are similar.
    I'll sleep on it to see if I think of something else to try in the morning, otherwise I'll have to reinstall tomorrow.

    cor-el
    Thank you for your swift reply. I don't know that this has helped me, as I've reached my level of tolerance for fooling with this annoying little problem - for today anyway. It has been going on since I "up" graded to Firefox 4. My wife is running 3.6.x on her laptop with none of this foolishness. As BLASPHEMOUS as it may sound, I've gone back to IE for the time being even though I don't like it 1000th as much as I do Firefox.
    Not just to rant here, I would say that I found a way to put some buttons on the right side of the toolbar that immediately gave me permission to "back, forward, and reload", but upon closing the browser and going out for dinner with the wife, I find on return that not only are those buttons NOT still on the toolbar, but I can't find them anymore. I think they were in "add-ons" found under I believe Add-On Manager.
    I did also manage to achieve back/forward functionality running Firefox in SAFE mode, but this meant no No-Script, among other things, and I've grown too fond of that particular little script to give it up.
    I've rebooted, restored, and reinstalled, can't get this formerly completely reliable program to work like it always has. Before looking around on here, I was beginning to think it was my PC.
    THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP, cor-el. I'm going to see if I can get on live chat on Monday.

  • Redhat resource adapter changes selinux context on /etc/group

    Hello,
    I'm having an issue with the redhat resource adapter. If I use the resources tab, expand a redhat resource, and edit a group, then it results in a /etc/group-file with this context:
    -rw-r--r-- root root user_u:object_r:tmp_t /etc/group
    .. which of course makes nscd and other applications stop working. After a restorecon on the file, everything works again.
    Has anyone run into this problem? I'm a bit anxious about this problem, because it essentially takes down the redhat servers.

    I found a solution. If anyone else has this problem, then adding /etc/group to /etc/selinux/restorecond.conf fixes it.

  • Another passwd/group/shadow/gshadow .pacnew merging script

    I noticed that I wasn't using my pacnew scripts for these files so I went ahead and wrote yet another script.
    merge-passwd will let you interactively merge multiple passwd-like files (basically anything that follows the line format "foo:bar:baz:etc", such as /etc/passwd, /etc/group).
    It collects all entries from all files. Entries that are the same are kept automatically. The user will be prompted to select those that differ, including deletions. By default it will print the merged file to stdout but it can be written directly to a file. I recommend using the "--confirm" option when overwriting system files.
    I may add this to the pacnew_scripts package or its own package depending on feedback.

  • Adding sound to rollovers,buttons.. etc..etc.. ok.. i'm new ( forgive me)

    Greetings..
    I'm helping the community develop a webpage to promote .. well.. the community.. and have been put in chagre of sounds...
    Is there an easy way, using java, to add rollover, button down, etc..etc sounds to a webage???
    I guess all sounds would have to be pre-loaded and in an ..um.. *.au format??...
    Please help as i am a complete novice, and i would be very very very thankful for any help...
    even if its a push in the.. get out of our forum way...
    Thankyou fot your time..

    The java.awt.Applet class has a method called getAudioClip(URL) and
    getAudioClip(URL, String) wich allows you to load a .au audio clip.
    Once loaded you can play the clip using the play() or loop() method and
    you can stop the clip with the stop() method.
    Example :
    import java.applet.*;
    public class AudioApplet extends Applet {
      private AudioClip clip;
      public void init() {
        clip = getAudioClip(getCodeBase(), "myclip.au");
      public void start() {
        clip.play();

  • Can I make "Catagories" or such so I can have a family group and a friends group and a work group etc And if so, can I synch it to gmail?

    First, I use T'bird and love it. Thanks to everyone who makes this possible.
    Now to my questions: I want to group my contacts as "Family", Friends", "Work" etc. How do I do it? Then, i synch T;bird with my gmail account. Will the groups translate? And finally, my gmail syncs with my Android phone (the only reason I have gmail). Will the groups sync with my phone? (Okay, Okay, the phone isn't a T'bird issue. Still, if anybody has an answer????) Actually, can I sync my phone with T'bird without getting gmail in the middle?
    Thanks in advance.

    To synchronize your address books, you need to use an add-on in Thunderbird. I like gContactSync; others speak highly of Google Contacts.
    Both will allow whatever groups you set up in Google's Contacts to be echoed as Lists in Thunderbird.
    And your Android phone will be more than happy to sync with Google's Contacts.
    I consider it worthwhile to run a gmail account purely for the purpose of managing an address book shared between my phone and Thunderbird. I didn't want my whole TB Address Book on my phone; most of it is made up of Contacts for whom I know an email address, but no phone number, so they wouldn't be especially useful on the phone. Hence a separate address book can be populated just with Contacts chosen carefully for their relevance to the use of a phone. Of course it can store email addresses too.
    To attend to your last question, probably not. Few phone manufacturers offer support for Thunderbird in their synch programs. Most of them are dire IMHO. Nokia's PC Suite was OK but they have been trying for years to roll out an inferior substitute program, Ovi Suite. Samsung devices come with Kies which is near useless.

  • I upgraded. So sorry. Wiped out my tab groups etc. Cannot restore preveiosu session.

    I was badgered to upgrade Firefox to the latest version. When finished it would not re-open. I had to close down all my open programs etc (really hated to do that) and re-booted the machine. Now Firefox comes up but all my tabs and tab groups are gone (I'll never get them all back) and cannot restore the previous sessions as YOU have it grayed out. Why when things are not broken does everyone insist in fixing it?? You should have at least warned me.

    '''''"I cannot get Tabs from previous session back when I reopen Firefox"'''''
    Be sure that you are not using Private Browsing or are in permanent Private Browsing mode. See: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Private%20Browsing (2nd and 3rd menu items on that page)
    Be sure you are not clearing history during a session or when closing Firefox. See:
    *Clear Recent History: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Clear%20Recent%20History
    *Clear History when Firefox closes: un-check "Clear history when Firefox closes" on Options > Privacy panel (the first item under "History" on that panel must be set to "Firefox will: Use custom settings for history" to see that item to un-check)
    '''''"there is no Firefox Tab at the top of my open Firefox window - only a menu bar"'''''
    The Firefox button is supposed to be on by default only in Vista and Windows 7.
    In Firefox 4, you have your choice of using the Firefox button (orange or gray) in the upper left corner or the Menu Bar (''File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools. Help'').
    *The selections on the Firefox button are different from the selections on the Menu Bar.
    *You can easily switch back and forth between the Firefox button and the Menu Bar or leave one or the other active.
    *The one being used depends on whether Menu Bar is checked
    **Menu Bar '''checked''' = Menu Bar '''on''', Firefox button '''off'''
    **Menu Bar '''un-checked''' = Menu Bar '''off''', Firefox button '''on'''
    When the Firefox button is displayed and '''you want to ''temporarily'' display and use the Menu Bar''', pressing the ALT or F10 key will display the Menu Bar and you can make your selections from the temporarily displayed Menu Bar.
    To check (or un-check) Menu Bar, do one of the following:
    *using Firefox button: click Firefox button > Options > Menu Bar
    *using the Menu Bar: click View > Toolbars > Menu Bar
    *HOLD down the ALT key while pressing the keyboard letters VTM

    Yes, I am using BI 7.0 in the backend. So I think I should be installing the 2004s UI, right?
    I presume to have done so, because now in my desktop(Start Menu), I have (against Business Explorer), Analyzer, Browser etc and also Business Explorer (SAP 3.5x) and against that I have Analyzer 3.5x and so on. So, that means, I have installed the 2004s too.
    So, why is this 3.5.0 being shown in the WAD which is 2004s?
