SD VOD quality

Why is the SD VOD quality is worse than DVD and, the pricing of HD VOD way more than what you would pay from Blockbuster or NetFlix? It seems to me that Verizon would be competitive in their HD VOD movies and price them closer to what you would pay at the other DVD rental places, since the quality of a DVD and HD VOD are comperable.

The SD picture will be fixed in the next software update 1.7 image. 
That is why I never get VOD, I use netflix. But I would love to see Verizon do a type of netflix thing. For $15 a month you get unlimited HD VOD.  I would cancel my netflix the same day.

  • VOD quality

    Anyone having issues w the video/audio quality of video on demand.  A few of the titles on premium subsciptions have very distorted video and no sound.  Others play perfectly.

    I don't have a definative answer for this but I have experienced the same thing.  I would simply exit out of the movie and re-load it. It would then load properly.  Must have been a glitch in the download.

  • VOD/On Demand (HBO/Cinemax HD) quality

    I tried searching to see if others were experiencing this, but I did not appear to see any items at first glance.
    We have been noticing a degradation of the quality of the On Demand selections from HBO/Cinemax HD. Primarily the program will begin well, but then at periodic intervals through the movie, pixelation occurs, to the point where we will losse some voice, and then it will return.
    If you rewind back behind the point at which the degredation began, it will generally play fine, until the next time it happens - which can be anywhere between 5 minutes to 20 minutes later.
    It can get rather frustrating when you are watching a movie and key dialog is missed, and you have to rewind to get back and figure out what they said.
    I am also frustrated as to the amount of money I pay for the service, and yet it continues to be an issue.
    Anyone else seen this issue, and if there are any suggestions on things that I could do to rectify it?
    I am reluctant to call for service, and I believe that it is intermittant, and I can never generaly have it happen when I want to show someone.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    To help answer the questions - see below;
    Are you using FIOS for internet? YES
    What is your data plan? 5 down / 2 up
    Have you tried a speedtest to see if you are getting the correct speeds? Yes - several times. All looks good
    When you are watching these movies are you also using the internet? Yes - BUT generally it is just idle time, as the computer will be sitting on a web-site, little other traffic. (e.g. no VoIP or P2P applications running)
    It's possible you are running out of bandwidth at these points for some reason.
    I thought similarly, but I also thought that the system cached to the STB.The playing does not stop, and the points when it happens only last for up to 20 seconds, you generally only loose 5 seconds (approx) of dialog. Almost like there is some form of interference on the line.  

  • VOD Troubleshooting

    I need help figuring out why a swf (simpleplayer) won't
    stream a VOD video.
    Even when I read the documentation I don't get enough
    information to troubleshoot when VOD (Video on Demand) streaming is
    not working. Last week, for example, I spent hours trying to find
    out why a swf would not work with VOD only to find out through
    trial and error that the developer had mis-typed the filename. No
    404 error anywhere. Which log should I have looked at? No error
    shows up on the console?
    So yesterday (and now today too), I'm trying to debug why
    another swf won't work. And this time I won't use the swf file
    embedded in a html page because the browser cache won't let any
    updates be loaded. No I'm going right to the swf file, multiple
    time and seeing each connection on the FMS Console. The streams
    look like they are started but no bandwidth.
    So any idea what is going wrong? Which of the many, many logs
    should I look at?
    Background. The FMS is at a hosted site. It did work last
    week. We rebooted the server to make sure it would come up properly
    before we put the server into production. It did, but now the
    streams don't work. So had it working once, did not change any of
    the config files and now it does not work.

    Yes. I just got FIOS in the Lansdale, PA area and I can't believe how slow the menu commands are, particularly the OnDemand. The quality of the OnDemand programming is terrible. I have sound drop outs and blurry video. The sound drop outs are usually during the previews and must have something to do with the broadcast quality (changes from Dolby Digital compatible to PCM to 2 channel) ... nevertheless, the sound should be consistent and the quality the highest.
    I see someone suggested the following to these issues awhile back ... 
    "... is supposed to be addressed in the IMG update to V1.6 - can't verify this as my area is still on V1.5."
    How can one tell what update they have?
    There are also suggestions about high resource demand being the culprit (e.g. multiple computers running etc.). Certainly this is likely not an issue unless you were trying to run everything at once, right? I have 4 TV's and up to 4 PC's but they are rarely on at the same time.
    Besides yelling at Verizon, does anyone have suggestions?

  • HLS-VOD stream slow....?

    took Lynda course and built a page "universal player" to try flash first, then go to the m3u8 stream, and then try android files lastely; Publishing an on-demand stream with a universal player code
    Encoded an 8 second video F4V 800kbps and then all the other formats OGV, WebM etc...
    Then added code for my own Strobe Player:

    Thanks for trying this out.
    Do you see the slow loading for both iOS and Flash playbacks ? Try including port into the HTTP url. So, it should look like : http://<server>:8134/hls-vod......
    8134 is the default port apache on FMS uses, with a default installation. Change accordingly otherwise.

  • HLS encryption VOD randomly stop playing on IOS

    We have 4 AMS servers load balanced (DNS) with identical application on each. RTMPe is playing fine from flash desktops, however, HLSe on IOS devices randomly stops playing part way through the content. I do not see any relevant errors in AMS/Apache. The front end player shows the following errors when the content stops playing:
    "CoreMediaErrorDomain" "No response for media file in 0.49632s"
    "CoreMediaErrorDomain" "Segment exceeds specified bandwidth for variant"
    Similar issues discussed here: http://openradar.io/15060374 (thought not AMS specific).
    This could be a player issue. It seems to randomly have issues grabbing an HLS segment. Has anyone else had any similar issues?

    I just wanted to add an update in case anyone else runs into a similar issue.  I seem to have found a solution to the problem.  Here's what I did:
    1) Plugged in to my computer and removed all music from my iPod (just unselected "sync music" then allowed the iPod to sync).
    2) In iTunes, under the summary tab of my iPod, I selected "convert higher bit rate songs to 256 kbps AAC" in the options section.
    3) I synced my iPod.  This took a REALLY long time, as I have just over 52GB of music that I chose to put on my iPod.  This is 52GB AFTER the conversion to 256kbps.  Anyway, it took a couple hours to sync the first time because it had to convert almost every song.  After the first sync, it doesn't take long to sync unless I add a lot of songs and even then, it only takes a few minutes.
    I've listened to my music on a variety of devices (in my car, different types of headphones, computer at work etc) and haven't noticed any degradation in quality, despite the fact that nearly all of the original music files on my computer are 320kbps.  I'm not sure if the problem I was having was due to the higher bitrate or the fact that the original music files are a variety of formats (aac, mp3, wav, and some others).
    I did this later in the evening after I posted the original question and have not had a problem since (about 15 days).  Skipping songs seems to go a lot faster as well.  I use my iPod a good 6-10 hours everyday, so I think that having no problems in the last 15 days is pretty good evidence that this is a good solution.

  • No HBO HD VOD...why?

    Ok...this is what they didn't understand yesterday.  I have ALL of the HD Channels and Movie Subscriptions.  When I go to VOD and choose Browse Premium Subscriptions, why does HBO not offer ANY High-Def on demand shows or movies?  Cinemax, Showtime, Encore, Starz and even Fear.net do.  We have paid our money, we should get EVERYTHING for it.  There are choices out there like Satellite, Brighthouse and several more on their way.  Granted, I love the quality of the picture that FIOs offers....but what is the deal with HBO?
    I called and nobody knew at Verizon...even the technician who said he had some calls on this and still didn't know. 
    If anyone has a clue, please enlighten the rest of us...thanks mucho!!!!  Also, I could have sworn about a year ago, HBO did offer their HD on Demand with shows and movies....or...perhaps that was just a good dream.  hahaha.

    I found this article in the blogs page. It didn't mention a specific date, but it did say "this fall"-
    HBO and Cinemax subscribers will soon have access to the new HBO HD and Cinemax HD VOD channels – each with 150 hours of HD programming per month.  This gives FiOS TV customers more HD programming from HBO and Cinemax than any other provider.
    We’re also expanding our Movie Package by adding on-demand HD content from The Movie Channel, by doubling the amount of HD VOD content from Starz, and by adding 150 hours of movies on-demand per month from Encore.

  • Missing Episode in Series VOD Content Again

    A previous poster had requested that Verizon offer the expanded Starz HD VOD.  I would also like Verizon to expand their HD VOD premium selections (Starz HD on demand, SHO, etc).    They often skip key programming that is on Comcast HD VOD in my area. 
    Even more frustrating however, every time I start watching a series on demand, FiOS goes and skips an episode.   FiOS did it with the Tudors, Party Down, and now Nurse Jackie (on SHO HD VOD).    Right now in VHO4 Showtime HD VOD has episode 6 of Nurse Jackie, but still no episode 5.   I start watching these premium series on VOD because they often premier week earlier.   Why can’t programming be consistently loaded into VOD?    As far as quality control, if a movie is missing, I can see where they might not notice.  But isn’t it more obvious when an episode number is skipped?   
    I last complained about this in March under different user account which was deactivated.   Did I say something bad?

    I believe that PPV is done using a QAM TV channel, not IP (like VOD).  If you are tuning to a channel for your PPV event then it has nothing to do with your Internet speed - it is carried on a totally different optical wavelength and not IP delivered.

  • Pixelation issues with VoD

    Getting pixelation and sound dropping through ALL of certain shows.
    I have read through the forums: I've checked my wiring, I have tried playing with the AC on and off... everything I have seen here, but there is a catch witch proves (I believe) that it is not my hardware.
    For instance, I felt like watching Game of Thrones today...
    Season 4 Ep 1 - Could not watch due to pixelation and sound dropping through ENTIRE episode
    Ep 2 - Watched it just fine
    Ep 3 - BAD
    4 - GOOD
    5 - BAD
    6 - GOOD
    7 - BAD
    8 - GOOD
    9 - BAD
    10 - BAD
    The "Good" ones are flawless, no problems, absolutely what I pay for...
    The "Bad" ones are unwatchable in any way.
    I am seeing this intermittant GOOD and BAD quality On Demand often lately.
    What's going on and please do not tell me to reconnect my equipment (which I have done just in case) The above problems do not describe an issue with my hardware.
    I have so few reasons to ever complain about my service, I love you guys!! But this is way more than irritating for the amount of money I pay each month.

    I have been experiencing this on all VOD TV shows and movies since installing Quantum VMS and clients. VZ tech came out to check signal (excellent) and said it is a known problem for 3 weeks now. VZ customer service personnel just refuse to admit it.  I am in Virginia Beach.

  • VOD resume play useless

    The issue I'm having is with video on demands "resume play". When we stop a program part of the way through, and try to attempt to go back and watch the rest of it, it starts it over from the beginning most of the time. Every once in a while it will remember where we last stopped watching and resumes play correctly, but most of the time it does not. This is very annoying when we're watching a VOD show on a program that does not allow fast forwarding because we are forced to either start over and rewatch the whole show or just not waste our time with it any longer. Please fix this issue as it has become a major annoyance with our service with Verizon..

    I have always disliked the term "VOD" because it really isn't. It is more like "what is on the menu". Just like a restaurant, you only get to choose what is on the menu, not anything at anytime. For a truer VOD experience, and one that is technically more reliable than the poor implementation of VZ, I have begun to use my laptop to stream to my TV, and I have purchased a ROKU device as well. Both provide a very satisfying experience with surprisingly good picture quality, even for standard definition fare. High definition is available depending on content and the provider. I have not yet gotten a subscription to Netflix or Hulu Plus, but they have a lot of HD material. There is a lot to choose from many providers that is free, and the ROKU people are partnering with both free and subscription providers. As an Amazon Prime member, I also get a lot of free movies and TV shows from that source. This is a whole new adventure in entertainment options, with lots of choices and a level of satisfaction not provided by VZ. I am not affiliated with Amazon or ROKU other than as a client.

    I am able to get the flash player and the content. If i try from another device I only get the outline of the player.
    This is a defsult insatll, no changes have been made. Any ideas?

    You will need write some server side script for this. The video tutorial is helpful. However, I have no luck by following the video. I wonder if AS3 handle NetConnection and NetStream differently.

  • Master data is not getting displayed in the Report in Quality

    HI Experts,
    I have ZESP_Num as master for my transaction data.
    I have loaded the data in the Development and designed and checked my report. It is working fine.
    But after moving it to Quality. My report is not getting the master data.
    When I try to do right click manage ZESP_Num.
    I'm getting message like this.
    The data from the InfoProvider ZESP_NUM involved could not be checked
    Message no. DBMAN242
    Diagnosis
    A participating InfoProvider is virtual and aggreement between results and selections cannot be guaranteed.

  • Can I return my new laptop to lenovo because of its quality problem?

    IBM is one of the best brand as I know, especially showing us not only high quality of products but the service.
    But now one thing happened to me, if I don't have this case I can't believe. I found there is something with the laptop(T61 Model 7658CTO) the same day when I got the new laptop on June 3rd, 2008. Then I call 800, a lot of 800 calls,at last I were told that I should contact send it back first if I were to get another new one. Three days later I got the box sent by Lenovo, and I return it back in terms of what the paper shown.
    Unfortunately the problems of the laptop still exist when I turn on my laptop after it repaired. What's wrong with my laptop, this is new one, I think IBM should provide high quality products.
    I don't know how to describe the weird sound , it sounds like two or more micphone opened clost to each other. It is very harsh.
    I want to get one new laptop from Lenovo because of the quality of product and customer service or can I return the laptop?
    I would appreciate any advice you can give me.

    I did it last week because I bought an iPhone 4 as a wedding gift but then I changed my mind and wanted an iPad, so the bride could use it together with the groom (while the phone is personal).
    I returned the iPhone to the apple store and I paid the difference to buy the 32GB iPad, no problems
    I didn't opened the case, but the guy at the apple store told me I could have returned the phone even if it was opened. It must be undamaged tough.
