Searching in DNS Server
Hi !
This has been a question in my mind since many days ago
Why we cannot search DNS or maybe we can but i do not know how !
we have about 10 zones and about 3000 entries in a 2008 R2 DNS server and many times we need to search for a specific record
how can i search for a specific record in all zones ?
Thanks
I probably wont get credit, looks like this is already closed, but I found something.
I have the same problem, looking for DNS with wildcards, and the export option does not work, it doesn't export the whole tree. For me it is tedious, because I have to remove a bad DC, and the metdata cleanup was not smooth. So I am having to
go through DNS and clean it out manually. With thousands upon thousands of records, and the DNS having random hex names, it is...unpleasant.
MICROSOFT, PLEASE ALLOW A "Right Click" SEARCH ALL for DNS!
Solution:
While trying to export from the command line DNSCMD (which I have not fully explored, maybe there is something here??) I stumbled across this folder C:\Windows\System32\DNS\Backup\ (NOTE IT IS THE BACKUP, SO DELETED entries may already be gone)
and it has one giant text file with all the DNS entries in it. To get a fresh copy of the file to search, use;
dnscmd /ZoneExport Microsoft.local MSzone.txt
This way I can 'find' with the current or backup file anyway I want, findstr being my preference, AND it will give me the full name.
Missing the backup folder? Try the windows backup, and be sure to include live data. This part I am not so sure, we setup our backups long ago, maybe some more searching for DNS backup ;)
Saving me HOURS of work!
Hope this saves someone else some time too :)
NOTES:
I also found some interesting stuff when I was searching, namely if I searched with FIND or FINDSTR it would return an entry like this;
600 SRV 0 100 3268 SERVER.NAME.COM.
so how to find it?? Turns out you need the line above it for the 'call' entry, if you find it in the file, you would find something like this;
_gc._tcp.MYSITE._sites 600 SRV 0 100 3268 SERVER01.NAME.COM.
600 SRV 0 100 3268 SERVER.NAME.COM.
Looking in the ZONE you dumped, start at _sites and you will find your entry.
I ended up just using notepad find, and searching that way!

I've run into a problem when I try to move a cRIO-9073 from one network segment to another (say 10.1.33.x to 10.1.36.x): The old IP address remains registered on our DNS server, so trying to access the cRIO by its DNS name fails as the DNS server tells my PC to look for the old IP address.
When I search the DNS server from my PC using "NSLOOKUP" with the old IP address, it finds the DNS name of the device. If I repeat the search with the new IP address (MAX finds the device with its new address, but I hate to have users use MAX to find it), it again returns the DNS name, so it appears the DNS name is registered under two IP addresses on our DNS server. I've also repeatedly tried to flush my PC's DNS cache using command "IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS", but it still tries the old IP address. I also see in MAX that the cRIO is using the same DNS server my PC uses.
Our IT people say that I have to tell the device to re-register its DNS name. They told me a command to do it from Windows (command "ipconfig /registerdns"), but obviously this is VxWorks on the cRIO. Is there a command to do this on the cRIO or a setting in the "NI-RT.INI" file I can change? I honestly don't think this is the issue (as it successfully registered the new IP address under its name), but I want to try it if it's possible.
Thanks!
Erik
ps - Our IT dept. won't let me use static IPs unless I get them assigned by both their MAC address AND the network jack they're connected to, so that's out.Normally this is actually a function of your DNS server. It needs to perform a periodic flush of stale records. You can check the RFC for the DNS protocol and build the necessary packet yourself.

Osx lion dns server, forward certain domain searches to other dns server
Hi!
i'm configuring the DNS service in OSX 10.7.1. I want to forward all queries to certain domain (f.e. *.special_domain.com) to certain dns server (f.e. 192.168.0.1 & 2)
i remember in previous OSX Server versions that you can do that in an easy way:
there were a /etc/resolver directory where you can place a text file in order to forward certain domain queries to certain dns server, like this:
filename: /etc/resolver/special_domain.com
content of this file:
nameserver 192.168.0.1
nameserver 192.168.0.2
now in lion there is no such directory... someone knows how to do that??
thanks for reading and regards!
Di've just read about the "scutil" tool
From the reply of the command "scutil --dns" i understand that is possible and also supported (i guess)
Now i have to discover what files that tool reads, and which is the proper way to modify that
I'll keep investigating tomorrot, now i'm saved by the bell!! -
SharePoint 2010 Search Error: "Internal server error exception"
Hi,
We have a SharePoint 2010 Farm with 5 servers:
1 SQL Server Cluster
2 WFE
1 Index Server
1 Search Server
Please see bellow a more detailed specification.Our DNS is using a Load Balancer
It turns out that when it uses one WFE (SERVWFE05) it throws this error:
SharePoint 2010 Search Error: "Internal server error exception"
when it uses the other one (SERVWFE06) it works.
What can be wrong?

LDAP External Authentication Multiple Search Base DNs question
hi,
im trying two add two LDAP search DNs to a portal 6.2 organisation.
with one search base dn it works fine.
when i add another, all ldap auth for that org stops working.
the docs confusingly state that if you have multiple search dns (not talking about multiple ldap servers here - just the search base dns) that you should prefix each entry with the local server name. the docs however provide no examples of the syntax.
can anyone provide an example for multiple search dns? e.g. is it <server:port>:o=<etc> (doesn't seem to work).
thankshi,
yes i have.. but when you enter more than one it stop working... with only one entry in the gui it will work for that entry but when you add another it stops working...
i had to use a manual workaround like this to get the second going... :(
External ldap authentication
register the LDAP authentication service in the gui and setup the first DN as normal.
create the first set of entries for the ldap host and the base dn in the gui as normal etc.
the gui in the admin console is not working (depending on your point of view), so you need to add the second ldap config manually -
All commands are run from the /apps/jes/SUNWam/bin directory
1. Get an encrypted value for the bind dns (cn=Directory Manager) password you want to bind to the ldap directory as by using the ampassword utility shipped with Identity Server.
./ampassword -e directory_manager password
More information on this utility can be found in the Sun ONE Identity Server Administration Guide.
2. Copy the encrypted password as the value for the iplanet-am-auth-ldap-bind-passwd in the XML file (serviceAddMultipleLDAPConfigurationRequests.xml) created in Step 1. The XML file contains a template for creating the second LDAP DN.
3. Modify the data XML file accordingly so that the relevant details are provided for the 2nd ldap server (bind dn search base etc) and load this into the portal directory using the amadmin command line tool as follows from the /opt/SUNWam/bin directory
./amadmin -u amadmin -w administrator_password -v -t serviceAddMultipleLDAPConfigurationRequests.xml
If the imported xml values are incorrect delete and reload the imported xml data using amadmin command tool. Alternatively you can modify the ldap data directly on the primary identity server (ldap server) using a client browser though this method is not supported .
You should be able to see new imported values for the second ldap server at dn:ou=subconfig1,ou=default,ou=OrganizationConfig,ou=1.0,ou=iPlanetAMAuthLDAP
Service,ou=services,ou=ORG,o=lgaq.qld.gov.au on the primary ldap server (where ORG is the organisation you wanted to add the second DN). -
Dear Experts,
In our office we have a domain controller call it 'Office.com', all computers and corporate servers e.g. exchange, antivirus etc. are member of this 'office.com', it is also having a DNS. All users in office have there preferred DNS set to the corporate
DNS
We are working for ministry and offering services to them from our data center so have many servers which are for ministry but they are in our data center. For all these servers we created another DNS server which contains all entries for these servers in
forward and reverse lookup zones. In this DNS we also created a forward lookup zone for our corporate servers and zone name is 'office.com'
What we are trying to have is name resolution of all servers which are listed in other DNS build in our office on Win 2008 R2 for ministry servers
If the user change his preferred DNS to ministry DNS he can resolve the ministry server but then we can not control any thing through group policy since they are using other DNS and not the corporate DNS.
How this can be done ? like any group policy applied to corporate domain controller must take effect on users and in addition to this user must also be able to resolve server names in ministry project DNS
Please assist ASAP.
regards,Hello,
ok so the GPO setting doesn't apply in any case.
Clients machines use the first DNS server in the list of configured ones on the NIC. If that one is available search for additional DNS servers will stop.
What i can not really understand is your description about the second DNS server. This should normally either another DC with AD integrated DNS, so everything is replicatedwithin AD replication or you use a secondary DNS on domain member server that pulls
the informations from the Master.
It sounds for me that you have configured a machine with DNS server role and created manually the zone with the same name as the domainand manually create there the required A records?

DNS server cannot be created because the authoritative parent zone
I am working in 2008r2sp1. I tried adding DNS Server and DHCP Roles first. Then under DNS Forward Lookup Zones I added "mysite.com" as a New Zone.
Also I searched my computer for a "NTDS" folder and the only on I found was "C:\Windows\inf\NTDS".
A delegation for this DNS server cannot be created because the authoritative parent zone cannot be found or it does not run Windows DNS server. If you are integrating with an existing DNS infrastructure, you should manually create a delegation to this DNS server in the parent zone to ensure reliable name resolution from outside the domain "artisdextri.com". Otherwise, no action is required.
The folder C:\Windows\inf\NTDS> is not valid. Specify a valid path, including drive letter. For example: C:\NTDS.
dcpromo /unattend:"C:\Users\Administrator\Documents\ForestAdd.txt"
ForestAdd.txt
[DCINSTALL]
InstallDNS="yes"
NewDomain="forest"
NewDomainDNSName="mysite.com"
DomainNetBiosName="MYSITE"
ReplicaOrNewDomain="domain"
ForestLevel="4"
DomainLevel="4"
DatabasePath="C:\Windows\inf\NTDS>"
LogPath="C:\Windows\inf\NTDS"
SYSVOLPath="c:\Windows\SYSVOL"
SafeModeAdminPassword="pass1"Hello,
If this is the first forest root DC, just ignore the information.
Check the blog:

How can I determine what dns server the wifi client use within airport
How can I determine what dns server the wifi client use within airport
I want to use dns servers other then the one that airport extreme is using. For example I got the 172.16.1.1 (the default gateway - airport extreme), but I want to use the office dns servers, that are in a 10.x.x.x range.
Is there a possibility?
Thanks and happy easternThe Airport Extreme uses the DNS servers assigned by the network that it connects to. Is you Airport Extreme on the 10.x.x.x network? if it is then you are already using the 10.x.x.x DNS servers. Check your Airport Extreme with the Airport Utility and you will see in the Internet tab, the DNS servers used. The devices connecting to the Airport Extreme are assigned a DNS address of the Airport Extremes IP, In your case 172.16.1.1 but all DNS searches and resolution are done with the DNS servers you see in the Airport Extreme.
If you want to use some other DNS then you can override in the Airport Extreme which will be used by all devices connecting too the Airport Extreme, Or you can edit the DNS address in each devices wireless settings. -
Someone please help,
I had a problem with my wireless not working on my 2nd PC. I originally thought that it was because of that PC being old and possibly having some trojan horses or other virus's that i could not get off. I have since threw out that PC and bought a new notebook yesterday at BestBuy. I told the man from geeksquad that i was having a problem with my wireless at home. He said that if the notebook could not connect to the wireless to push the red reset button on the back of the router and start over with redownloading it on my PC.
I have done that, but am stuck on step 8 of the wizard. I have the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway. It is now asking for DNS 1(DNS Server address). What is DNS & where would i find this? I've had this router for about 2 years, will there be any other important information that i may need when trying to connect my notebook through this router?
Thanks for your advise.I did find the DNS address's, but once i tried to finish the setup of the router it said, Unable to configure router, reset the router to factory default settings. Well in short, after some searching, i wired the PC directly to the modem. It would not connect to the internet. Did I do something or delete something I shouldn't have? Looks like it. UGH!! My notebook is working just fine connected directly to the modem, but I'm getting nothing with the PC connected to the modem or the router.

Resolving arabic domain name in Solaris DNS server
Hi..
I just quickly want to know how can i define arabic font domain name to get resolve in my DNS server?
I tried to put entry with arabic name but editor making it abnormal, i recently get arabic locale installed on server through north Africa region. Locale is now showing me "AR" ..
Thank youSorry my bad.... slight mistake in my question...Here is my corercted query--
After successfully connecting to the internet, when I do NSLOOKUP on the DC, the DNS doesnt resolve my internal domain/site but instead resolves external sites on the internet.
My computer FQDN is nri.wwe.com
Domain dns name is wwe.com
The above should get resolve internally but it searches on the internet.
This is how it should work
& it works perfect when I disable the other NAT network adapter (i.e. disable internet connectivity on my virtual DC)
C:\>nslookup nri.wwe.com
Server: nri.wwe.com
Address: 192.168.1.11
Name: nri.wwe.com
Address: 192.168.1.11
But when I again enable internet connectivity, this it what happens.
C:\nslookup www.wwe.com
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.12.2
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
Non-authoritative answer:
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
Name: www.wwe.com.nsatc.net
Address: 64.152.0.124
Aliases: www.wwe.com
And when I again nslookup, this is what I get,
C:\>nslookup www.wwe.com
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.12.2
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Request to UnKnown timed-out
Now this 192.168.12.2 is VM assigned DNS via VM Natting with its own DHCP. If we do it manually, none of the virtual machines can connect to the internet. So I cannot fiddle with it anymore as I have already that as well. -
Dnsmasq sends out its own ip as dns-server dhcp option
Hi,
i have a gateway / dns server on 192.168.1.1
I have a dhcp server on 192.168.1.2 (dnsmasq)
I configured dnsmasq to look into /etc/resolv.conf (well, that's actually default behavior) and use that to specify dns server when replying to client dhcp requests.
However, it sends out its own ip instead, which is *not cool*.

'offer'
2 dhcp that answers fastest with a 'offer' will win. A delay is configurable (but changes nothing
about the root scenario were the fastest will win)
Note that if the scopes overlap on the servers, they might not lease out all the addresses in the scope.
I would enlarge the scope as you will want to fence against unavailability of one of the servers (or a network connection for that matter). you currently have more addresses leased out than any set of two of your servers can offer.

Incorrect DNS when using DHCP. DNS server is considered to be a Virus??
Running 10.5.5. Noticed extreme slow down in resolving domains in safari, firefox. I currently use Verizon FIOS. When looking in network settings it shows a DNS server as 85.255.115.30. This is not verizon's DNS server. When I delete that server out and add the Open DNS server's address internet works great. This is not an issue on Verizon's end because any ethernet connection to any internet provider will default to using that address for DNS. Only does it over ethernet. Tried deleting the port and re adding and still comes back. No issues when booted off another drive. Mcafee says that a Trojan changes the DNS on PC's. No PC's are networked to this mac. I cannot delete this DNS server under the DNS tab in advanced settings...?
That IP address does seem to fall within the range known to have been used by the DNS changer trojan (try searching the web for "DNS changer", puper, OSX.RSPlug.A, 1023.dmg, etc.). That very likely means that at some point, malware managed to run with "root" privileges on your system.
Under such circumstances, it would be safest to back up all of your data and reinstall the OS and applications from known "good" media. -
Hello all, This is my first post, i have searched to see if my problem has already been solved and i found a partial answer to it. The router has not been used in about a year or so. I recently purchased a laptop and wanted to be able to access my service wirelessly. When i powered up the router the power led was blinking so i fallowed the instructions on the help page to see if i could get the firmware upgraded and the router to work the problem is to manually assign the static ip i need the routers dns server and i cant get that because i cannot access the routers web based setup page. Is there a way to upgrade with out the dns server? and if so how? Or can i use any dns server?
Do not use any DNS numbers for the static Ip settings .... Try to ping the gateway address 192.168.1.1 .. if getting reply ... access router setup page .... Check if you are able to upgrade the firmware or not ...

Should my DNS server be talking to the internet?
I have the DNS service running on my OSX server in order to use Open Directory and server-based home folders. To use these server-based home folders I have to put the IP address of the server in the "DNS Server" entry on all the machines in Network Preferences.
Because the workstations here would seem to be going to the file server for DNS, do I need to open ports on my router or something so that the server can provide this info? I'm having some weird email issues with emails not arriving in a timely manner (inter-office via the internet, some arrive days late) and slow response times in Safari (page takes a while to start loading, and then loads very quickly once server found) so I'm wondering if this is what's causing it.
Any hints appreciated. Thanks!If you only use your own DNS on both server and LAN clients (you should with your setup of using the same domainname internally - a bit "ugly" but it works) you need to also setup any external services IP numbers such as any mail and web servers (and others).
It wasn't me who set it up like this, but I'm stuck with it! What do you mean when you say to "setup any external services IP numbers"? DO you mean I need to tell the server where to find the mail server so that it finds it more easily? Where do I put them? And would it just be the mail server address, i.e. I assume I don't need to put in every website we want to access? No, that would be silly... but then... who knows.
I would add forwarders (your ISP DNSes) to /etc/named.conf and turn off IPv6.
In theory I know about these unix style text files, but do I need to be logged in as root to see them? I can't see the /etc directory and searching for named.conf brings up nothing. Also, I turned off IPv6 on the server and shortly after someone with a server based home folder got a message sayiing that they'd lost connection to all the mounted volumes on that server with "disconnect all". Turning IPv6 back on made that message go away so I don't want to play with that again for the time being!
Is there a way to set these things up without resorting to editing text files? I'm an old-skool mac user and so it's a bit scary. I should have made that clear from the beginning. Thanks!
