Searching through "foldered" Trash on a Firewire drive

I like to keep my Trash nice and tidy and only delete incrementally when I begin to run out of space. This is what I do: every week or so I open up the Trash on my "Trash" drive (the one with the most spare space that stores all my Trash), create a dated folder (YYMMDD), and copy all the "unfoldered" trash from all drives to that new folder. Then I empty the Trash on the other drives.
To remove the oldest folder when I need to (to free up space), I select the one at the top of the Trash and use my favourite Terminal command: +sudo rm -R+. Love that command.
My question is: sometimes I want to search this "foldered" trash. I came across the trick of making the trash visible by +Go To Folder > ~/.Trash+ but that doesn't seem to find items in folders in the Trash on external drives. I tried it once on a file I knew was there, and nothing came up.
Is it possible to search a "foldered" trash that is on an external drive without scripts or other complications?

iKey is a front end program that simulates typing and mouse movements. I use iKey to remap the Function keys.
"iKey is an automation utility, a program that creates shortcuts to accomplish repetitive tasks. In essence, an iKey shortcut is a little program in its own right, but you don't need to know the first thing about programming to create an iKey shortcut. All you have to do is put together three necessary parts of a shortcut: One or more commands that give the shortcut its functionality, a context in which it runs, and a launcher that defines how the shortcut is activated."

iKey has a little more function then the previous free version called youpi key. For many years, I used youpi key before switching to iKey. It works fairly well for me in MAC OS 10.4 although not officially supported. The youpi key download is hard to find & no longer here.

Examples:
I have the common programs that I use assigned to function keys. I have F4 assigned to Firefox. When I want to start FireFox, I press F4. When I want to switch to firefox, I press F4! Starting & switching to an application in Mac OS are the same thing in Mac OS.
Here is an example of to assign volumn control to a function key.

Here is my script for listing my application folder. I have it assigned to function-key 6.

tell application "Finder"
   open folder "Applications" of startup disk
   select Finder window 1
   set bounds of Finder window 1 to {-3, 44, 691, 545}
   --set position of Finder window 1 to {33, 44}
   set position of Finder window 1 to {60, 45}
   activate
end tell
The second portion of this script was generated in the script editor record mode. After I recorded the script and did some editing, I copy the script to ikey/youpi key.

  • Firewire Drives creating desktop folders

    Hi,
    I have 2 external firewire drives (one Lacie 160GB and one Maxtor 300GB). Both are partitioned in 2. The 4 volume creates an empty desktop folder. I throw them on the trash but they always come back. Well its not a serious problem but it bothers me a lot. Anyone ? thx
    G5 Dual 2.3 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Some more information: Well, inside the apparent empty desktop folders there are two invisible files: ".localized" and an empty folder "VISE temp folder".

  • It seems like a simple task; please, please let me search through my folders.

    It is, still after all these years, frustrating, infuriating and just plain dumb that I can't do a simple search to that finds the folders in my bookmarks. I have decade(s) of web searches organized in folders, but firefox ignores them. It seems like a simple task; please, please let me search through my folders.

    Don't use the search bar but just type the search text while the folder pane has focus to jump to the first occurrence of that text.

  • Firewire drives through Cardbus instead of built-in port

    Hello everybody,
    I currently have three external firewire drives and presonus firebox (firewire) audio card.
    This is the way I have them connected now:
    Powerbook Firewire400 built-in port->Presonus Firebox->Firewire RAID drive (1+1 stripe)->Firewire single audio drive.
    Would I get better performances using the following?
    Powerbook Firewire400 built-in port->Presonus Firebox
    LaCie Cardbus Firewire 800 port 1 -> Firewire RAID (1+1 stripe)
    LaCie Cardbus Firewire 800 port 2 -> Firewire single audio drive.
    for 79€ I am going to make this purchase if things are supposed to get better..I think the firebox does a little bottleneck the way things are chained now.
    I also have a FW800 port on my powerbook, would it be better to use that port for the drives and the FW400 for the presonus? ..but it's the same firewire controller, isn't it? while with a CardBus dedicated Firewire card, I'd get a dedicated controller, TRUE dedicated controller for firewire.
    Please share some light I am confused,
    a|b

    You might get better performance, assuming the card has its own power. I tried a RATOC card without its own power, and the computer was constantly unable to hook itself to an iPod properly. So make sure if you get a card, that it has some sort of A/C adapter, or meets the power needs of what you are connecting to it.

  • Time Machine Data Transfer - From FireWire Drive to Time Capsule - HELP!

    Time Machine Data Transfer - From FireWire Drive to Time Capsule - HELP!
    I've been searching for weeks for a solution to my problem. Here's the story I've come across since I installed Leopard on Oct. 26, 2007.
    I first installed Leopard on my Early 2006 MacBook and set up Time Machine with a 200GB external FireWire drive. Since then, things have been fine, until Time Machine started deleting the oldest backups. I'm a pack-rat and hated this feeling of losing data. So, I now have a few months worth of backups on my 200GB FireWire drive.
    The Time Capsule is released, I finally talk myself into getting one and transferring my old data from the 200GB drive to my 1TB TC.
    I did some researching through forums about how to move data from one Time Machine drive to another, so I took the concept and wanted to apply it to my Time Capsule. I made a DMG image of my 200GB drive, in order to move the data. I figured if I can make an image, copy it, and open it on the Time Capsule - all will go smoothly - just as some had mentioned they've done with external drives.
    Now, I have a 164GB DMG image of my Time Machine, with no hope in sight of gaining it back. I've tried taking the image, using Disk Utility, and restoring my original 200GB external with the imaged Time Machine data, but whenever I do, I come across error messages.
    In Disk Utility, I've done the following steps:
    * Disk Image is found on Time Capsule
    * I select the 200GB drive and select 'Restore'
    * I drag and drop the Disk Image to the 'Image' field
    * I drag and drop the 200GB drive into the the 'Restore' field
    * Select 'Erase Destination'
    * Select 'Restore'
    * I get the warning message that I'll erase the drive - I proceed
    * I enter my password
    Error message pops up:
    "Restore Failure: Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore."
    I select the image in Disk Utility, then proceed with the following steps:
    * Click on "Image" then down to "Scan Image for Restore"
    * I enter my password
    After hours of waiting, I get another error message:
    "Unable to scan. (Broken pipe)."
    I'm going to see, after transferring the DMG to the Time Capsule, if I can drag-and-drop the files from the Time Capsule drive onto the 200GB hard drive.
    IF anyone has any more suggestions, please let me know!

    32 updates on this Mac since December 2007 - Hardware, software, OS...
    They keep coming at about 6 or 7 a month. Some of them I don't care about, but several are essential. 10.5.3 has been seeded to the testers a couple of times and will probably show up in the next few weeks. Jaguar wasn't worth a d*mn until 10.2.6, Panther about 10.3.4, Tiger about 10.4.4 - I'd say we are ahead or on schedule Too bad I can't get Apple to fix Spaces. I wish they'd focus on what I want but I guess some take more time than others.

  • How to install tiger on external firewire drive

    I'd like to upgrade my dual 2GHz Power PC G5 to 10.5, but I need access to OS9 from time to time. To solve this I wanted to install 10.4 with OS9 on my external HDD. I partitioned my Western Digital drive (connected by FW800) and installed 10.4 from the install disk. However, when I select it as the startup disk, the startup fails to identify the disk and starts from the internal drive.
    I tried to follow instructions from an old post, but one thing that was different was that when partitioning my harddrive, I did not have the option for GUID, I just had the option for Apple Partion Map. Oddly, now that I installed OSX 10.4, the option for GUID appears, but still seams incorrect since I'm on a G5 CPU.
    Any ideas why I can't boot from the external drive? Any suggestions on how to install OS9 and migrate my user folders over when I get it working?
    Thanks,
    Marcus

    Many Western Digital firewire drives will not boot a PPC mac. From this WD support page:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1787
    The following external hard drives are not bootable on Power PC based Macintosh computers systems through USB/FireWire 1394(a/b):
    * My Book Essential Edition
    * My Book Essential Edition 2.0
    * My Book Home Edition
    * My Book Mirror Edition
    * My Book Office Edition
    * My Book Premium Edition II
    * My Book Pro Edition II
    * My Book Studio Edition
    * My Book Studio Edition II
    * My Passport Studio
    * My Passport Elite
    * My Passport Essential
    * WD Passport
    * WD Passport (Silver)
    If your drive is new and on the list, I would try to return it and get a different brand.

  • Blue Screen Result When Installing To External Firewire Drive

    I can't afford to have problems with programs not running on Leopard on my 17" G4 1.67 GHz 2 GB RAM PowerBook so I am trying to install it on an external Firewire drive. I was hoping to test out Leopard with certain applications by running it from the external drive.
    The Firewire drive has two partitions, one has my backup clone of the PowerBook and the other just has files and about 35 GB of free space. The installation would be a new installation so none of the files that deal with login or Application Enhancer that are being talked about in other threads are an issue.
    My first attempt to install brought up a blue screen after the installation restart. I left it there for about 30 minutes then powered off the PowerBook by holding down the power button. I started it again and held down the option key, picked the install disk as startup, went through the disk utility repair disk (found no problems). After that I picked the new install on the external from the startup preferences and it simply restarted to a blue screen. I left that one for about 20 minutes then powered down.
    I went back to the Powerbook Tiger OS system, deleted all the installed folders on the external and tried a completely new install. Once again it went to the blue screen after the Leopard install restart. This time I left it overnight and this morning the display was dark and upon waking it up with a tap of the space bar was greeted by the bluescreen again.
    I talked to my Apple hardware rep who knows the equipment that I am working with and we talked about all the steps I went through and he has no explanation why it won't work on the external.
    I would love to hear from anyone that may have insight for this particular external FW drive installation perspective.

    Joe-
    Is the drive partitioned to APM? (Sorry I took Anton's reply to be yours.) What was the type fo partitioning onthe disk with the success? I am not knowledgable enough in those error messages on the system.log file, but one thought is - after the memory upgrade, did you clear the PRAM (long shot, but do it anyway)? The machine booting on one external Firewire drive (#2) implies the problem is with the external FW disk (#1) you are using. Some other people had the bus error, but with Time Machine. (Not to go on a tangent, but TM seems to have problems when the disk name has non-alphanumeric in it.)
    Hoping someone who knows the syslog errors and the boot sequence will pipe in here.

  • Use Firewire Drive with both OSX and XP

    Hi,
    I am in the process of migrating to a Mac from Windows XP. I have an external hard drive (WD MyBook Pro 250gb) which I have been using to backup data to from Windows. The device is currently formatted to 120gb using NTFS so that Windows can backup to it. The remaining space is currently unformatted.
    I need to keep my Windows data for a period while I become comfortable using the Mac before decomissioning the PC. I had assumed that I could maintain the XP NTFS partition, and simply partition the remaining space as an HFS/HFS+ partition using the Disk Tool in the Utilities folder. However, when I attempt this, I don't get any option to format the remaining space - not even as FAT.
    Previous experience with Linux led me to believe that this would be easy to accomplish on Mac OSX, but it appears not to be the case.
    I have searched Google and other Apple Support forums. At this point I am unsure if it simply a lack of knowledge on my part, or if this just flat out cannot be done with OSX.
    Once I am happy that the migration is successful, then I will trash all partitions on the Firewire drive and simply have one HFS/HFS+ partition, but I'd like to have the extra comfort of keeping my data in the interim.
    Many thanks for your effort on providing guidance.
    Mark

    Why not format the remaining space in Windows as FAT32? That way both your XP and your Mac can read and write to the FAT32 space, XP can read and write the NTFS space, and the Mac can read and copy from the NTFS space. The reason I suggest doing the FAT32 format in Windows is because I have had number of cases where Windows (both XP and Vista) simply would not recognize a Mac formatted FAT32 partition, whereas the Mac has never had a problem recognizing and using Windows formatted FAT32 partitions/drives. Once you are quite done with the Windows XP machine and have transferred all the data off the drive, you can then select the whole drive and do a low level reformat. At that time you'll want to change it from the Master Boot Record partitioning scheme it undoubtedly currently has, to the GUID Partition Table that is preferred for Intel machines and Leopard.

  • .Trashes on a flash drive

    Hi,
    I have a little Cruzer Mini 512 MB flash drive that I use with my mac and Windows machines at work. It came formatted in FAT16 and it never occurred to me to change that.
    Of course, when I plug it into a Windows machine, all the hidden files and folders that my Mac copies over (such as ._filename, .DS_Store, etc) show up in Windows Explorer. Usually that doesn't bother me, as they are only about 1KB each.
    I've done a bit of research online and I understand what these files are and what they do. That's not my question. My question is about the .Trashes folder--whenever I delete files from my flash drive in the Finder, instead of truly deleting them, it stuffs them in this .Trashes folder. I wouldn't mind that so much if the drive in question were an 80GB FireWire drive, but alas, it is not. My 512MB are precious.
    Right now I need to transfer a 350MB file from one machine to another. I deleted everything from the flash drive, but it didn't actually delete, so now I have ~200MB of junk that won't even show up in Finder.
    I tried using a utility called WhatSize, which sizes out even hidden directories and lets you delete them. Every time I delete a subfolder in .Trashes, unsurprisingly, it doesn't really delete and just creates another subfolder. When I tried to delete the entire .Trashes folder, it told me that was a no-no.
    Obviously this entire problem would be solved if the drive were formatted HFS+. Even if that's possible, I don't want to do that because I'm moving this drive across operating systems.
    Is there another solution? I want these files really gone so I can fit this 350MB file on here.
    1.33 GHz Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    The invisible .Trashes folder stores files and folders which you've placed in the Trash but haven't yet deleted; items you've moved to the Trash from the disk which contains your home folder are kept in the .Trash folder of your home folder. To delete the items from both folders, control-click the Trash icon in the Dock and choose Empty Trash; you can also empty the trash from the Finder's Finder menu, and an option to securely empty it is available on 10.3 and newer, which overwrites the data as well as deleting the files.

  • External Lacie firewire drive slow access

    Around 3 or 4 weeks ago, for seemingly no reason, the 250gb external firewire Lacie d2 drive attached to my PB started running slowly.
    To give a bit more detail and example: I run iTunes off the drive and it runs fine. BUT, on most occasions, when I doubleclick the drive icon to open it, I get the beachball of doom spinning away for at least 30-40 seconds before it opens the window - the music playing then cuts out while it's accessing. Not what I expect from a firewire drive. I also hear the little beep from the drive quite often when it's trying to access.
    It's getting silly. Although it will quite happily play music on shuffle for the entire evening without cutting, as soon as I try and use the drive like you would any drive (ie. navigating through files and folders), it does the beachball for 30-40 seconds thing every couple of windows. It's made it virtually unusable for everyday working (in the way that I'm going to throw it out the window if it carries on).
    I can't remember if it started happening after the 10.4.7 update... I didn't do anything different to cause it, so am perplexed. Haven't tried Lacie forums yet either.
    Any ideas, people?

    I've now read that adding external drives to the privacy window in spotlight is a bad move. Besides, I need to find stuff and shouldn't have to turn it off (I always thought that after the initial spotlight indexing at first installation, it would just update rather than re-index the whole drive, so it shouldn't be that slow anyways... right?)
    So, I've run diskwarrior, and it's optimized. Still the problem persists. LaCie tell me I have to update the firmware, but I'm a bit worried at the risk this poses to the data on the drive (ie. a sh*tload of music among other stuff). I have nowhere to put the 100gb on the drive, as I'm running a PB with a 60gig internal.
    Risks?

  • Firewire drives, project problems

    I'm trying to open a fairly large project file, with media spread out over 9 firewire drives, and I keep having problems with the system choking up.
    Most importantly, at least one of the drives failes to be recognized by the system, and it appears that the clips on it are offline. It's happened on different drives, so I know it's not a drive specific issue, and when I search for the drive name it turns out the icon for it is buried inside of another firewire drives directory. Even once I've found the icon, I'm unable to access any of the contents, which I know are safe and sound on the drive.
    Is there a way to avoid this? I've trashed my project preferences, repaired permissions, and I can't think what else to do. This problem only started once the project got bloated with a lot of sequences.
    I'm using FCP 3, with OSX 10.2 on a G4 400mhz with maxed out RAM. All the firewire cases are Oxford911 chips.

    Hi Shane--
    Do you have any experience with SPINDOWNFIX 1.1 on an OSX version later than 10.2.3? I'm hesitating to install it just because it hasn't been tested any further than that OS. I'm on 10.3.9 on a MDD G4 and I'm pretty much maxed out on storage as well.
    The difference is that I normally edit from my internal drives (500 GB RAID and additonal 250 GB Storage) and try to use the FW drives as backup for the projects once I'm done. FCP doesn't have any problems reconnecting files unless you're changing the filenames quite a bit.
    I have ~900 GB on 4 Lacie Ext. FW drives, 3 are for A/V storage, and 1 is a company drive for project files, Images, DVDSP stuff, Word docs, etc. The first 3 drives I have daisy chained via the machines only FW800 port. The chain looks like this:
    G4-->FW800-->FW800-->FW400. The other 'company' FW drive has it's own dediacated FW400 port from the G4. The other FW400 port is dedicated for my capture deck only.
    My suggestion for the original poster is to rearrange ALL your hard drives (int AND ext.), so that you are working off of internal drives as much as possible (whatsize will be an invaluable tool for doing this). Then, if you truly DO have NINE drives daisy-chained, and you're done capturing (on to an INTERNAL drive, I assume), at least spread out the Daisy-chains over all of your FW ports. And as mentioned before, try to leave the drives you don't need OFF.
    Thanks!

  • FireWire Drives keep dying on me. . . (different systems, different brands)

    If there is a better area to post this pls let me know and I'll move it there.
    This problem has plagued me for years and through totally different Mac systems and completely different brands of drives. I use external firewire drives (I work in video so back years ago I had no choice). It starts with the drive not always showing up on the desktop (need to turn it on and off a few times). Then one day the drive dies. I have tried the basic diagnostic things to retrieve, in one case even sent the drive to the recovery place in Colorado. I never get anything back. Does anyone else have this issue or any idea why it might be happening?
    Now with larger ATA drives I try to keep as much internally as I can and avoid FW drives, but then when Time Machine came along I needed some way to back up EVERYTHING, so I got a Terabyte FireWire Drive (MyBook, but I've used LaCie, Western Digital, every major name you could think of). Seemed to have issued showing up on the desktop after a restart (if I unplugged the power and put it back in the drive would restart and then show up on the desktop). But yesterday it died. It was soon enough that the store replaced but if it happens again I have to go to warranty.
    Any ideas or references much appreciated.
    thanks

    Speed isn't the only issue if you are trying to determine why the drive failed. If it worked well with USB, then it's not the actual drive, but the Firewire chips that do the IDE or SATA conversion.
    I use Firewire drives from OWC (with cooling fans) without any problems (none of the 8 drives have died in the last two years). Firewire is nice for speed, but in reality, USB is plenty fast for backup services. Unless you are having to backup many gigabytes every hour, USB will work fine.
    On the other hand, I like my drives (and other devices) to connect directly to the machine instead of going through a hub. The current iMacs have two Firewire ports that are mostly unused by home users. Using one of these Firewire ports free's up one of the three USB ports for other devices (like the recommended UPS data cable).
    It would be interesting to know if your WD drive actually died or just became corrupted due to bad Firewire firmware. In the last 6 months I've gotten these new WD drives in a state that they won't mount on Firewire and can't boot a Mac. The two drives I got like this were both repaired by the firmware updates from WD. Both of these drives worked fine with USB.
    I've never cared for WD drives. Too run-of-the-mill and too many failed drives under intense use. But then, it took quite awhile for me to accept any non-SCSI drives. I can find anecdotal information on just about any brand that would suggest a brand is trash. For the present, I'm recommending the Hitachi (formerly IBM) Daystar and Travelstar drives for consumer machines.
    Unfortunately, there have been failures with just about every manufacturer as the quality continues to degrade to get the prices down.

  • Macbook causes external firewire drive to operate constantly

    I have a Macbook 1.83MHz with 2GB of RAM installed. Whenever I connect my 80GB LaCie external firewire drive, the drive commenses to do a rapid cycle as if I were copying a large file to it and does not stop for the duration of being attached to the computer. Searching through files on the hard drive is very slow, and if I click on a file in column view, the finder beachballs for several minutes while the info or preview is being generated. The drive is the only device in the chain and worked great with my previous machine, a dual 867MHz G4 mirror drive.
    Any thoughts as to what might be going on? Thanks.

    well, i attached my other firewire drive and it started doing the same thing, but i was able to add it to spotlight's "ignore" list and the problem went away. so this is probably the issue, but i can't make it stop on the original firewire drive because whenever i try to add it to spotlight's ignore list, the beachball spins for a few seconds then nothing shows up in the list.
    checked firmware, everything up to date. next step is to reformat...
    too bad spotlight doesn't default to NOT indexing everything you stick into the computer... (or at least dump indexing way back in the priority queue so it doesn't get in the way like this)

  • Unload Firewire Driver(s)

    i'm trying to get Quark 7.5 working on a new iMac with snow Leopard. It works on some new Macs (I have it working on an MacPro), but can't get it to launch on a new 27-in iMac. On another forum someone said they were able to get Quark 7 to work by "turning off/unloading" the firewire drivers.
    Can someone tell me how to do this and if there are any real repercussions if I only do this temporarily while using Quark. Also since I'm still somewhat of a newbie with terminal, if I use the sudo kextunload [kextName] to unload the drivers, can I then simply reverse the process (reload the drivers) by then simply using the sudo kextload command or do I have to first copy the drivers somewhere else. Any information instructions on how to unload/turn off these drivers temporarily would be helpful -- note; have no firewire drives hooked up to the iMac and I know that Quark has ver. 8, I have to use 7.5 for compatibility reasons.
    Thanks
    Jeff
    Thanks in advance for any help

    Hi Lurch
    Ok was away on vacation and just got back. My initial install was to move Quark from one machine to the other (not with migration assistant, but just a drag over. When that didn't work I deleted all Quark files and preferences, etc. and did a clean install, adding all the updates Quark had issued. In any case, with a normal install (Quark preference files where Quark installs them -- a folder in HD/Library/Preferences and one in ~Library/Preferences) then I get the crash report listed below.
    If as Quark once suggested that you trash the preferences folder in the HD/Pref folder and make one in the Quark application folder, Quark will launch, however it never asks for a serial number and won't let you save (as if its operating in some type of demo mode). Can't get past that state.
    So anyway, here is the bug report from Quark (from the clean Quark install and with Preference folders where Quark put them):

  • Why an I losing contact with Firewire drives and camera back?

    One of my computers suddenly won't connect to a Phase One digital back via firewire.
    Tried to plug in a external drive to check the port. No contact. (Tried various cables, etc.)
    Tried camera on another computer. No contact. Tried firewire drives that had been running before on this same computer, and now it won't read these drives.
    My PhaseOne dealer assures me that a digital back can't possible fry or disable a port. Still. there they are.
    Took one of these drives to yet another computer that connects fine with yet another drive, tried the problem drive, and there was no connection. When I checked About This Mac there was a spinning wheel, as though it were looking for something.
    Any thoughts, anyone? I don't want to test more drives if they are being damaged. And if they are, can they be recovered?
    Many thanks
    Sean Kernan

    Hi, John.
    1. I presume in Finder Preferences, in the General tab, you've selected "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" under "Show on desktop." Otherwise, FireWire drives won't display on the desktop, but they should still appear in the Finder's Sidebar.
    2. If you did not Eject the drive before you disconnected it or powered it off, its partition map may be corrupted. That could explain the symptoms you are seeing. Your FireWire-based digital camera back may be seen as a FireWire drive.
    Disconnecting a removable storage device — FireWire drive, USB drive, etc. — without first ejecting it can result in the drive's partition map being corrupted. Before disconnecting such a device, one must first Eject it by either:
    - Dragging its icon to the Trash.
    - Control-clicking the drive's icon and selecting Eject from its contextual menu.
    - In Disk Utility, selecting the device, then selecting Eject in the Disk Utility toolbar.
    If there's data on the drive you wish to recover, see my "Data Recovery" FAQ. Once you recover the data you want to save, if any, you will need to repartition and reformat the drive.
    3. Before you panic w.r.t. item 2 above, Here is some general troubleshooting advice w.r.t. FireWire devices that may help:(1) Review the AppleCare Knowledge Base document "What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire device".
    (2) If this problem occurred after installing a recent Mac OS X Update, and you are also unable to mount CDs, DVDs, or disk images perform the steps in this Mac OS X Hints article.
    (3) The following additional steps will often help resolve problems with FireWire devices, particularly hard drives:(a) Power-on the FireWire drive before starting up (booting) your Mac.
    (b) Reset PRAM and NVRAM.
    (c) Reset the PMU or SMU: Select the appropriate knowledge base item for your model of Mac from this KB search. Follow the instructions on resetting the PMU or SMU carefully!
    (d) Try a different FireWire port. James Wiebe, CEO of WiebeTech, has published FireWire Port Failures in Host Computers and Peripheral Devices, a white paper providing backgroud information and technical analysis concerning the causes of failure for FireWire ports. This may provide additional diagnostic information.
    (e) Check with the manufacturer of your FireWire drive or enclosure to see if any firware updates are available for such.(4) Hopefully, the partition map on the FireWire drive is not damaged. If it still refuses to mount, you may need to employ data recovery tools or services: see my "Data Recovery" FAQ.Note that some of the information above is from the "FireWire Problems" chapter of my book, Troubleshooting Mac® OS X.
    PS: You've not provided any info about the computer in question, i.e. Mac model, installed RAM, installed version of Mac OS X, etc. That's always important to include in a post, and I suggest you add it to your profile: click "My Settings" in the upper-right section of the sidebar on the right side of this page.
