Secondary internal HD fails after only 1 week

I just bought and installed a Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA for the second bay of my G5 ... it worked fine for three or four days, then it discontinued making backups of my main hard drive (error -50), and now Drive Genius is telling me the S.M.A.R.T. status is "Failing". Does anyone have history with this particular model? I'm not sure if I got a bad egg or if this is typical Western Digital performance.

Whew!!!... Let me recover a moment...
I've never heard that before, I find it very hard to believe. WD is a highly recommended company on these boards. So much so that I bought two... from you know who. The Velociraptor alone should prove that claim false. This drive is fantastic and I haven't heard a peep from anyone saying the opposite and I think I would have considering the price. Overkill? Perhaps. Bad to have in a Mac? Heck no.
Seagate's a good company, always has been. But they don't have a corner on the mac market. Granted, I **** in my heart for their 15k, but at almost a grand, I think I'll hold off for awhile.

  • Logicboard replacement fails after 2 weeks

    Hi all
    I finally got the logicboard in my G4 ibook replaced. because I have already bought a new powerbook I intended to sell the unit. After using it a handful of times I posted it for sale and left it (turned off) for a week. Now I have tried to boot it and it failed. The symptoms are exactly the same as they were before I had the logiboard replced.
    This really ****** me off because I did pay for the labour to get it fixed and it was when I was trying to demo it for a buyer that it stopped working.
    I was wondering if anyone else has had the logicboard replaced only to have it blow out right away? Could the power unit be shorting it out or something?
    Thanks!

    My G4 ibook went wrong after a year. The screen goes blank. A restart usually results in nothing but the fan coming on. Repeated attempts at restart sometimes get the thing to running again. however it only runs for a few minutes before the screen goes blank again. The machine was exhibiting strange video problems for months before it finally packed up. i wish I had been more assertive with the shop I brought it from and got the machine replaced. I am now left with £850 worth of junk. I beleive the machine has a manufacturing fault. The repair shop I took it too had had a lot in with the same problem. I suggested to Apple they sell me a new logic board at cost price and I would pay for the fitting. They refused. I cannot beleive a Logic board costs Apple £500 which is price I was quoted. A very poor show indeed. This is not the way to treat loyal customers.

  • I purchased the Photosmart all-in-one CN503B and after only 6 weeks its dead, no lights nothing.

    Has anyone else had a power issue with the CN503B photosmart all-in-one, mine failed after only 6 weeks and I'm having a nightware getting through to warranty. As an HP employee I'm embarassed at the level of support given to customers so much so in fact I've put the printer in a cupboard and bough a Canon instead.

    I have had a Photosmart 310a for about a year with no problems.  Did you buy a unit through the employee sales channel?  As I recall these are generally refurbished and do not have the standard (or any?) warranty.
    That said, what are the symptoms?  Does the LED on the power supply light up?  If not you probably need a new power supply, probably available on eBay for under $15 with shipping included.  The troubleshooting steps in this page may help resolve the issue.

  • Internal drive failed

    My internal drive failed after a year of hard use. It's still under the extended warranty, and wondered if I could take it to a local Apple store and have them replace it. Would they be able to do it inhouse (Japan) or have to ship it back to the states? Would they even replace the drive or is this something I have to do myself? There is a store called Sofmap in Akihabara that stocks 2.5 SATA drives, and I can look on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com for a list of drives that others have had success with.
    If I had to do this myself, how easy or hard is it to get the old drive out, and the new one in? I'm handy with tools as I used to have a G4 tower, and installed lots of aftermarket parts in it.
    Computer is a US model bought in Tennessee Oct 2007.
    TIA!

    Hi,
    It's very simple to replace the drive. No more taxing than adding additional RAM.
    As for your warranty question (AppleCare?), only the people honouring the warranty can answer those questions for you, so I'd recommend contacting them directly.
    We're just users like yourself here so it doesn't matter if someone claims yes and another claims no

    8-doing a factory reset, then repeating steps 1 through 6
    Do you mean a restore to factory settings?. If so did you set up as new or restore from back up afterwards?

  • TouchSmart 600xt unresponsive after only 1 week

    Walked up and tried to get my 600xt out of sleep mode this morning, and it acted hung.  Nope, its dead.  Tried unplugging all cables including power for a few minutes, still dead.  I thought maybe it was the screen but the screen does work because I can still cycle through the input options using the button on the left side and can adjust the display with the controls on the right.  So it isn't even POSTing, or if it is, it isn't showing on the screen.
    I'm concerned now about what the process is to get this fixed.  This is the worst nightmare on a proprietary all-in-one that is more locked down than a notebook.  At least with a notebook I could probably remove the HD but this one I don't even know how to do that before I send it in.  They need to come to my house to work on this because I don't want to send my data in.  I have it backed up but I don't want the refurb sold on Ebay some time with my data on it.
    POS for dying after a week. This is a new model so I wonder if I should let them get this half-baked crap up-to-speed and just return it--but I still need to get my data off.

    Talked with a couple helpful people at HP.  Of course, they wanted to repair the unit and I refused.  They also would not send me a new PC without having mine shipped back first.  But I was talked through reseating the memory and the HD is easy to get at also.  Even sent me a doc with pictures.
    So if you have any problems besides HD or memory, you are probably on your own.  Nothing we did got my machine to even show the HP logo.
    They sent me a call tag, to return the defective one.  My biggest concern now is not messing up my 25% Bing cashback, since this will look like a return.
    Hoping this isn't a lemon, I know failures happen but a brand new model well ventilated hooked to a UPS dying after 7 days does not give me warm-fuzzies.
    Oh, and HP, why won't you do in-home service on the highest margin PC in the industry without an extended service plan?  BOOO!
    Anybody got any suggestions on an extended service plan?  I don't think 3rd party like SquareTrade is a good option since they won't probably provide in-home service.  And since this machine is not very user servicable, I don't feel comfortable taking my chances.  So HP is the only real option for an in-home service plan right?

  • Http get requests fail after a few weeks

    All,
    I have a get request to a servlet that works for a few weeks, then it will suddenly stop.
    I change the code once, works,then it will fail after a few weeks.
    I change the code again, works, then it will fail after a few weeks.
    Servlet works like: send one request, wait, then send a second.
    Here are the last 2 code iterations:
    try {
            // Construct data

    You appear to have empty catch blocks. Which means you don't get the error message that would tell you what is failing.
    Put in code that logs the exception and the stack trace of the exception. If you can't figure out the error message, post it here.
    You should be closing streams in finally statements. Otherwise they might not get closed when there is an error -> you leak descriptors -> you run out of descriptors -> every stream open will fail -> more errors -> more descriptors get leaked -> etc -> everything stops working. Always do it like this:
        WhateverStream out = null;
        try {
            out = ...;
            ...use out...;
        } finally {
            try {
                if (out != null) out.close();
           } catch (IOException e) { ...log it... }
        }

  • What is up with the iPod nano 7th gen.  I just had a second one die. with both after only 3 weeks of useage?

    what is up with the iPod nano 7th gen.  I just had a second one die.  both after only 3 weeks of useage... both dead since Jan 10th 2013.

    this is an answer I just gave to someone else.
    i'm going to ask you to try something I just did to fix a maybe simular problem that worked..... but I don't know why yet........make sure your iPod in plugged into your computer (mine is a Mac) and iTunes is turned on. My iPod  was  also "dead" but had been plugged into my computer for a couple of hours (but not lit up in any way).  Then (in desperation) I held down all the buttons, the on/off (on top right), the small Home botton at the bottom of the face, and the volume/pause buttons (left side).  For whatever reasons my iPod came back to life in a needs restoring mode ....and asked me to restore it in the itunes like "new'  iPod connected mode.  Since I have a Mac I also had to give permission to do a download by entering my computer password. If you have to do the same have that password ready. Then it did a restore software download.  Everything previously on the iPod was erased and had to be re-synced,  but I was just thankful to get it up and restored again.
    Give this a shot and I hope it works for you.....but  why? I don't know yet, I need more questions answered.

  • My 4TB G-Drive failed after (Firewire) installation of Maverick.  A 1TB G-drive using USB works.  What next?

    I have an IMac running OS X 10.9.1.
    I purchased a new 4TB G-Drive.  After installation with Time Machine the drive correctly made backups for about 2 weeks.  I installed Maverick.
    Then I began to see the message “Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder”
    I called G-Technology. Using the erase function of Disc Utility we received the message “Disk erase failed.  Disk Erase failed with the error: Couldn’t unmount disk”. It was determined that the disk was bad and I returned it to the vendor.
    A second and then a third disk experienced similar failures after only two backups.  G-Technology then said the problem was a computer problem
    I called Apple support and allowed them access to my computer.  After their intervention the disk worked for two backups and then failed.
    I purchased a 1 TB G-Drive yesterday.
    I thought I would give it a test and so I made it the backup drive for time machine.  It made a primary backup and has been continuing to back up without the feared error message.
    I went to the internet and have discovered that my problem has been experienced by others. It only occurs after an upgrade to Maverick.
    It also only occurs with a Firewire connection.
    The new drive has a USB connector.  It works fine.
    What next?

    Which iMac (please be very specific) and also why have you not updated to 10.9.2?

  • MBP After 1 week of use

    This report will track well with the conventional wisdom about a so called "1.0" piece of hardware.
    *Very cool form factor. The slight additional thinness makes a big difference!
    *No obvious form or fit issues. It's just as solid as the Powerbook it's replacing.
    *Much more effective at transcoding video, no surprise there.
    *Buggy. Even Universal apps such as Itunes, Safari, and the Finder itself are not quite as reliable as the Power PC versions. I couldn't make Safari work. It caused kernel panics causing me to have to power the system down manually. Replaced it with Camino which crashes occasionally.
    *Sometimes the dock takes a second to respond--something I never saw with the Power PC Powerbook. I just finished mousing over the icons in my topmost menu bar such as the volume control, airport menu, time and date, etc. Many of them hesitate for a second or two or give me a beachball momentarily before they respond. I never experienced anything like this with my Powerbook except when the hard drive was failing after two years of use.
    I am not complaining. The Intel version of OSX and the new Universal apps are new and have not been used in the real world very long. I am sure they will get better with time and Firefox will be out soon in Univeral Binary form. Overall I am not displeased. The crucial thing is that this computer can fill the place previously occupied by my beloved Powerbook.

    MacBook Pro 2.0 Ghz 256 Video 1 Ghz RAM 7200 rpm hd, Powerbook G4 1.25 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Just thought I'd chime in here as well a little.
    I've had mine for 1 week as of today as well. I agree with all of your positive points, and would also like to add that the screen brightness is a huge improvement over my IBM Thinkpad (I've never owned a Mac before this so I can't compare that).
    Safari launches in just a single bounce of the dock icon and has not crashed at all for me. It runs a little faster than Firefox and Camino, but that is to be expected. Using the unofficial Univeral build of Firefox and Thunderbird, they are very quick and snappy with very few crashing issues (Firefox has crashed maybe once or twice, Thunderbird has not at all.) I also have no hesitation at all when accessing the dock or menubar items.
    The only problems I've had have come from either running PowerPC versions of programs (VLC would crash many times when switching in and out of full screen mode, but the Universal nightly build fixed this right up).
    Also, a couple things I've encountered briefly- When closing my MacBook Pro's lid to transport it after having it hooked up to my Dell 2005FPW LCD and external speakers, when I wake it up later, the sound is muted and the only way to unmute it is to plug in speakers or headphones and remove them (or reboot). This has happened only once. Also one time I have had the screen remain blank upon opening it up after having been plugged into the LCD and nothing seemed to "wake it up" (hitting various key combinations, checking screen brightness, etc). I had to hard reboot it to bring it out of that.
    Otherwise, everything is great.

  • Installed leopard, now secondary internal drive repeatedly dismounts itself

    After searching the discussions, I'm now resorting to posting for help for the first time in about a decade of owning macs.
    I finally upgraded to leopard and now my secondary internal drive keeps dismounting (disappearing). I get the same error message that I'd get if an external drive had been disconnected without first dragging it to the trash. When I restart the drive reappears but then decided to unmount at some random time afterward.
    I'm about to reset the SMU. I've already reset the PRAM and run Disk Warrior. S.M.A.R.T. status is verified on both my main and secondary drives. Disk Utility shows no problems. I've backed up all my files and am thinking I should just replace the drive. I'm worried that I'll just run into the same issue though and wind up spending money on a new drive that I don't need.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    James

    I have the same problem randomly although I don't get an error message. One time it has unmounted after startup otherwise it fails to mount at startup. I had been leaving a CD in the machine at startup and wondered if this could be the reason. I started removing the CD prior to shutdown and the problem has pretty much gone away, but not completely.

  • SQL Azure sync service-- absurdly slow and fails after a few days

    Hello. We have been trying to use Azure Data Sync to replicate an on-premise MSSQL database to an SQL Azure database for read-only access by a customer. This was working for a while, but stopped syncing after a couple months(12hr auto-sync schedule) with
    no errors in the log. I had to re-create the sync group, but now it takes even longer than originally to try to sync, and never actually completes, as it gets interrupted by bi-weekly server restarts... It used to take a few hours to sync the new data in our
    database(which is appended to daily)-- but this time it fails after 4+ days... It was unacceptably slow initially(IMO), but now it's clearly unusable.  The original initialization of the data when I first set it up was less than 2 days of syncing.
    It seems there is a throttle on the Azure sync service. Is this true?  Would it be best to clear the SQL Azure database now and re-sync? Is there a way to pre-load the SQL Azure database with MSSQL on-premise data via a SQL backup file or something?
    Please advise. Thank you.

    when you re-created the sync group, does the member databases/hub database have pre-existing data?
    when synching a sync group for the first time, make sure databases don't contain the same set of data, otherwise, you will run into conflicts which will completely slow down your sync...
    I deleted the initial sync group because it wasn't syncing(auto or on-demand), nor creating a log entry with an error indicating why.
    So, I simply deleted the sync group and re-created it with the same exact databases and settings. I did not delete all data in the SQL Azure database-- I was under the assumption that the sync service, with the tracking tables were smart enough to not get
    confused with pre-existing data, but apparently that's not how this works?
    I obviously can't delete the data in the source database(MSSQL on-premise), but I could delete the tables in the SQL Azure database if that's supposed to fix the problem-- then we'll just have to wait multiple days for it to be completely re-initialized,
    hopefully without error... Is there a way to seed the data in some way to prevent this extremely log first sync?
    Thank you for your help.

  • Mac Mini RAM upgrade: failure after one week

      Processor Speed:          2.5 GHz

      L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          3 MB

    After severe performance problems with Aperture, I decided to go for an RAM upgrade to 2x4GB. Went to my (non-Apple) dealer, got me two DDR3 1333Mhz Samsung bricks and put them in. Worked like a chime. Startup went fine, RAM types shown in the Activity Monitor with plenty of free RAM and great performance... for a change.
    After a week however my Mac froze. A restart gave me two beeps and a flashing light in front. Manual tells me 'wrong RAM type'. Same situation after replacing only one of the bricks.
    A bit weird after a week of juicy operation?
    Getting back the old RAM installed resulted in a working Mac - but with the limited memory obviously.
    Will go back to the dealer and have the RAM replaced next week.
    Ever heard about RAM failing after a well?
    /thanks!

    To my limited knowledge about Silicon production it would not be too easy to produce fake RAM sticks that
    - are accepted by the HW check
    - show the capacity as specified
    - .. but fail after few days (haha!)
    I will update you about the latest with this story.

  • File Server/AFP gets slow after a week or so

    Hi all,
    I manage a file server at our office here, with around 20-30 users, running 10.3.9 server. Users connect via AFP for general office duties, but also remote-desktop into a windows server using Rdesktop via X11. They use SMB to access their files from the windows side.
    I find after a week or so that logins to the shares, and general file access gets incredibly slow, and grinds to a halt eventually, but comes good after the server is rebooted.
    It is usually quick to authenticate in any case, but takes an age to bring up the list of shares that the users can pick from (probably 10-15 at most depending on their permissions). Even after a fresh reboot it takes about 10 seconds to bring up the list of shares to pick from. Is there any way to fix this?
    I find that is someone has their computer set to calculate folder sizes on a server drive/share it can make the server grind to a standstill, but even with everyone set up correctly it still goes slowly all by itself after a few days/weeks of running. Logging in via Remote Desktop becomes slow at this point too.
    I've tried some of the tips in this thread below with only limited success.

    As you upgraded the router's firmware,reset the router for 30 seconds and reconfigure the router from scratch.
    On the router setup page,Under the Wireless tab,click on the Advanced Wireless Settings...Change the Beacon Interval to 75, Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2307 and Click on Save Settings...
