Security and login problems

iMac G5, 10.3.9
Recently, the computer began to occasionally refuse passwords for accounts when trying to log on. From the logon screen, selecting an account and typing the password wouldn't work. The only solution was to restart.
Unfortunately, when re-started, the computer bypassed the login screen and went straight to the Admin user account, allowing any user access to all functions. This is a major security problem. (Note, once re-started, logging out and back in worked fine, with passwords correct for each account).
I ran Repair Permissions and thousands were fixed. Ran it again and it checked out fine. Now, restarting bypasses the login screen entirely, going straight to the Admin account. If you log out and back in, all still works fine.
This is a serious problem. What's going on and how can I fix this?
Carl
Powerbook Pismo (G3 400)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks, ali.
It is, in fact, set as automatically log in as the admin account. Odd because it was never set that way in the beginning, but this is a relative's computer, and maybe someone else re-set the auto log in. I've re-set it back and will test the system again.
Anyway, any ideas why the passwords would get corrupted and not work while the system is running? It typically happens when the computer goes to sleep.

  • What's causing these power-up and login problems?

    I recently switched from Tiger to Leopard (installed by the repairers) and have encountered some power-up and login problems. Basically, my set up is that the computer automatically logs into a non-admin account, launches a Safari page, and then that's it - after checking the webpage, I logout of that account, into my main account, and work from there.
    In Tiger :
    A few times quite recently the computer would freeze, either while Safari was launching / opening the webpage, or when I tried to logout. Force Quit didn't work (total freeze) so I would force power-off and switch on again, and things would be fine.
    In Leopard, one of the following has begun to happen, about two weeks after I began using it:
    • The computer reaches the grey screen with an endlessly rotating gear wheel. (Power off / on again)
    • The computer logs in to the account; after selecting 'Log out...' I log out, but instead of giving me the login screen, it logs straight back into that account, and this happens every time I try 'Log out...'. (Use Fast User Switching instead to reach main account, where one or two software glitches prompt a Restart) This has happened twice.
    • This morning, the computer reached the blue screen where the pointer appeared - faded - appeared - faded etc endlessly (Power off / on again).
    Clearly it is not the System - experiencing problems in both Tiger and Leopard proves that. Nor is it my HD - I've had a new one installed. It must therefore be a setting in my login account, though it's hard to see what : I only use that account for login, and a single launch of Safari, and it's been ok for years.
    Should i create another login account and see if that solves the problem? By the way, the repairers did not give me any Leopard install disks, so please don't suggest that method of diagnosis. I only have the original Tiger disks.

    2. I don't know what Apple app(s) you refer to? As I said I've upgraded all the free ones, and iLife '06 is working (and I have the disks).
    Look in your Applications folder: Any Apple app there, except for the ones you've mentioned. And all the built-in parts of OSX.
    3. They told me that I CAN do a full restore from a Time Machine backup (via Disk Utility apparently).
    That should tell you something about the quality of their advice.
    See: [Mac OS X 10.6 Help Recovering your entire system|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15638.html].
    Or the *Restoring your entire system from a backup* section, towards the bottom of [Mac 101: Time Machine|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427].
    Or look up +*Time Machine+* in Mac Help.
    Or #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
    And if there's a problem with your installation of OSX (which seems likely), or the Apple apps, you can't reinstall them, either.
    4. Having spent hours and hours getting the machine to work properly (upgrading Mail and sorting out Mail problems, upgrading Safari, re-upgrading iTunes and sorting out problems), I'm not prepared to spend hours and hours doing the whole thing in reverse to restore Tiger, including learning HOW to do that.
    Correct; unless you have backups of the Tiger system, that's impractical at best.
    So unless anyone has a reasonably simple, straightforward answer as to what this problem might be, it looks like I must live with it.
    You have some sort of problem with your Mac and it's not going to get better on it's own. Most likely, it will get worse.
    If you haven't, try the things recommended by Dale.
    Also try running the +Apple Hardware Test.+ It's on one of the disc(s) that came with your Mac, and is tailored to it's particular hardware. The disk should have +Apple Hardware Test+ and instructions for running it printed in very tiny type.
    I sympathize with your situation, but the repair shop violated the Apple license, and put you in an untenable situation. If they won't correct it by supplying the Leopard disc, you really should report them to Apple.
    You need to purchase a retail copy of Leopard (not the gray discs that came with another Mac; they won't boot yours). They're not shown on the Apple Store website anymore, and eBay and other sellers get a premium for them, but AppleCare should have them for the original $129.

  • Front row, where's the app and login problem....

    Hi all !
    When a use front row via the apple remote, each time my Imac core duo goes to sleep, and i try to change playlist in itunes it ask me for my login/password... So i have to get up and enter the password, annoying since i'm in the bed trying to sleep on sleeping music :-))
    BTY where's Front row don't find it in the app folder ?

    BTY where's Front row don't find it in the app folder ?
    Front Row in Mac OS X 10.4.x is not an "application" so it doesn't live in the /Applications/ folder. It is part of the /System/ folder.
    each time my Imac core duo goes to sleep, and i try to change playlist in itunes it ask me for my login/password...
    Under the Security System Preferences, do you have the box checked "on" by the option that says, "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver"? That must be the option that's causing the trouble. There's nothing built-in to Front Row to require a password...

  • ICloud password and login problems

    I have to verify my iCloud password every day through forgot.com using the memorable questions. I updated my phone to the latest IOS and I am using Mavericks on the Mac - other than that nothing has changed. This problem has only occurred in the past two weeks, I can't believe the account is being hacked EVERY day... Anyone having the same problem?

    Hi LucHow,
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    To help remedy this certainly frustrating experience where you are needing to verify your iCloud password constantly, I'd like you to please contact Apple account security in your country for support.

    Hi, I have installed Oracle APEX2.2 on my oracle10.2.0 windows server with oracle 10http. I have followed all the instruction of Installation manual. However I run into problem when I tried to access the login page.
    1. I couldn't see any image from the webpage.
    I have copied all the images from installation directary into ....\Apache\Apache\images, and put this as alias in marve.conf.
    2. after I put in 'admin' and password from "application Express administration services" page, I click login button. however nothing happen, I only can say "error on page" from status bar.
    Does anyone have similar problem? Does anyone know the problem?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Danield,
    I think your may have to double check with your marvel.conf (Oracle10HTTP). Deponse on what you have put your Location section there, you will see different responds.

  • Account and login problems

    I have upgraded three of my four Macs to Leopard from Mac OS X 10.39 but I now cannot use the third, a G4 Mac Mini, because it will not recognise any of my existing accounts. None of the advice I've seen on the forums or in Apple support documents so far has worked. As with my other Macs, I installed 10.5 from the DVD and then upgraded to 10.51 from the combined update available as a download from the Apple site (ie. not via Software Update). The accounts do not appear on the login window and the usernames and passwords do not work, and I can currently only login as System Administrator. But it's not like the user profiles don't exist: each account profile is still stored in the Users folder. When I'm booted from the DVD, the system does recognise the accounts because I can use the password utility to change each account's password. If I log into single user mode, and ask it to list the users, it will do so correctly, but when I try to change any account password in single user mode, it says the user does not exist. If I also try to delete the authentication authority plist file, as suggested by Apple, it says invalid command. I've tried to 'unhide' the accounts in Terminal, and I've also tried to check the keychains in Keychain Access (version 4.0 (32499), but it lists virtually no passwords. Does anyone have any further suggestions? In all the years I've been administering my own systems, I've never encountered such a botched system upgrade as this.

    My old aunt had the same problem on her iMac. She said she did a software update (she could not remember which software she updated) and after she was unable to login into her user account. I had to help her remotely so I had to keep the instructions simple to make her restart the computer and she was unable to get in with the safe mode. I was still able to connect with VCN so I ended up creating another user for her and "stole" her stuff from her old account and moved it up to her new account. Once I changed the permissions of her old home folders It was fast to migrate her music, pictures and documents. It was tricky to migrate her saved eMails but she had a new back-up of her Address book so that part was easy. The only draw back was that she had to re-enter the registration numbers for the few softwares she uses.... thank God, she was well organized and had all her registrations neatly save in one binder along with her Back-Up CDs. Not bad for an old lady!

  • PI 7.3 - AEX "unable to read configuration data" and login problems

    Hello Friends,
    after installation of AEX, i'm facing some problems.
    1.I'm not able to login with any user, i created during installation wizard. So i cannot check any user in NWA -> User Administration.
    2.Once more, while opening http://<host>:<port>/rep or http://<host>:<port>/dir, i get the following error message.
    Can somebody help me?
    I think, there is a problem with the users, which have been created during installation. How can i check this? Is there any chance?
    Second, if i'm able to login, i have to import the exchange profile again. This should solve the problem. Or is this wrong?

  • Security and password problem-AE

    Why did I have to disable the WPA2 security password on my iMac G5 in order for my iBook G3 to connect to the network? How can I set up a secure network that works with both computers?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   iBook G3 (10.2.8)

    Welcome bliphouse,
    Bummer about what iFelix mentioned regarding the compatible issues with ibook G3's.......but WEP is still a good security setting....
    Below is what I posted just moments after iFlex's post.....it might be helpful.
    This is what I just did about an hour ago....I changed my security from WEP to WPA2 Personal. What I had to do, with help from Hitheringwaters and um:
    You probably already did this......
    Open Airport Admin Utility, select your AE, click on Config, make sure Airport button is selected, change wireless security to WPA2 Personal, add your new password and click ok. make sure you select Update...close Airport admin utility.
    open Network preferences, highlight Airport then click on Config, make sure Airport button is selected, then "By Default Join: select preffered networks, delete your network. close Network Prefs, open up Network prefs again and add your network back with a new password and don't forget to Update.
    this is what I just did for my Powerbook G4 and iBook G4.....and i have WPA2 Personal security on my AE network.
    I hope this wasn't to confusing but helpfull.

    I really don't have an answer for that one. I guess that while trying to get things working correctly, I would use the most basic monitor I had which in your case would be the Eizon using the Thunderbolt port and adaptor.
    When you boot into Safe Mode the startup is quite slow, but you should get the Apple logo and then the spinning gear below it (release the SHIFT key when it appears.) Then after a little more time you should see a gray progress bar appear below the spinning gear. When that disappears the computer will startup to a login screen.

  • Web Center app with ADF Security - login problem

    I have a custome Oracle Web Center app.
    I have a page.html with an embedded login form posting to j_security_check. I've configured the ADF security policies to redirect to a JSPX on successful login.
    When I try the correct username/password, I get redirected not to the page I defined in ADF, but to the root page http://127.0.0.1:7101/MyApp-ViewController-context-root/
    and i get
    Error 403--Forbidden
    I've checked the weblogic.xml as per http://andrejusb.blogspot.com/2009/12/solving-error-403-forbidden-in-adf.html, all the required entries are there.
    This works fine if i use a Login link with
    destination="#{'/adfAuthentication?login=true&amp;end_url=/faces/postLogin.jspx'} "
    which redirects to the default login.html and then to the right page. I've copied the form from the default login.html into my master HTML page.
    Hope my question is clear. Any suggestions why it is going to the wrong URL after login.
    Is there anything specific I should see in the jazn-data.xml or web.xml regarding the post-login URL since i cant see that in either.
    P.S. Have been advised to try here when I originally asked this in the WebCenter forum. Web Center app ADF Security - login problem
    Edited by: new_to_webcenter on 18-Jan-2011 05:25

    Thanks for your response Frank.
    The web.xml has
    <security-constraint>
    <web-resource-collection>
    <web-resource-name>adfAuthentication</web-resource-name>
    <url-pattern>/adfAuthentication</url-pattern>
    </web-resource-collection>
    <auth-constraint>
    <role-name>valid-users</role-name>
    </auth-constraint>
    </security-constraint>
    <login-config>
    <auth-method>FORM</auth-method>
    <form-login-config>
    <form-login-page>/login.html</form-login-page>
    <form-error-page>/error.html</form-error-page>
    </form-login-config>
    </login-config>
    When configuring ADF Security via JDev , I chose "Redirect upon successful authentication" to the Welcome Page
    "/faces/postLogin.jspx"
    this then adds into web.xml
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>adfAuthentication</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>oracle.adf.share.security.authentication.AuthenticationServlet</servlet-class>
    <init-param>
    <param-name>success_url</param-name>
    <param-value>/faces/postLogin.jspx</param-value>
    </init-param>
    <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
    </servlet>
    So the sequence which works is:
    Login via the '/adfAuthentication?login=true&end_url=/faces/postLogin.jspx' and this redirects to login.html (OOTB form which posts to j_security_check) and then to the postLogin.jspx
    I'm trying to do away with a Login link, and trying the simple login form embedded in my page alongwith other content.
    So should the form be posting to j_security_check directly or to the adfAuthentication ?

  • Weblogic 10 jaas and login.jsp and web.xml/weblogic.xml security constaints

    Hello,
    I struggled through and got the examples.security.jaas.SampleCallbackHandler.java and examples.common.utils.ExampleUtils.java/ExampleConstants.java into eclipse where they compile. A bean I made can call SambleCallbackHandler like such:
    mybean.logmein(username,password,url). I can then do a mybean.getStatus() or even a mybean.returnCode(). It does seem to correctly identlify that it is authenticating me (I see in stdout logs that it shows success or failures. The problem I have is I do not know how to apply this weblogic and web.xml/weblogic.xml so that if authentication works it redirects me to the page requiring the authentication. In web.xml I have the following set up:
    <security-role>
         <role-name>Admins</role-name>
    </security-role>
    <login-config>

         <form-login-config>

              <form-error-page>/badlogin.html</form-error-page>

         <transport-guarantee>NONE</transport-guarantee>
         </user-data-constraint>
    </security-constraint>
    My weblogic.xml has:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <wls:weblogic-web-app xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:wls="http://www.bea.com/ns/weblogic/90" xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee/web-app_2_4.xsd http://www.bea.com/ns/weblogic/90 http://www.bea.com/ns/weblogic/90/weblogic-web-app.xsd">

    <wls:principal-name>dashap</wls:principal-name>
    </wls:security-role-assignment>
    </wls:weblogic-web-app>
    With this set up, if I try to go to a page in /admin folder in my application, it correctly pops up the login page. The jaas in the bean is doing a loginContext.login(), which I thought does authentication too, but it never goes back to the /admin page I was going to that needed the authentication. With jaas, can I not use the web.xml FORM security option? Do I Need to use j_security in the login.jsp's form's action= option and j_username and j_password for the input type names? How do I use j_username/j_password things if I am using jaas? I could just ignore using the web.xml security stuff and put something in the pages that need authentication, but it would be easier if I could use jaas with the security featurs without doing all that. Note that my code above is using a realm called default just because that was what was in the example I got from the web. Does that need to be something else?

    Hi John,
    I would like magic of course. However, in this case I want something special: my authentication provider uses special means and contents of headers, cookies and service from external identity management systems to determine the user's identity.
    I do not want the application to present the login dialog! I want to derive the identity and the fact that the user is logged in from whatever the authentication provider returns in terms of Subject.
    Ideally, the flow is something like:
    - user accesses an unprotected resource - resource is shown, no interaction with authentication provider
    - user presses a link or button that takes him/her to a protected resource
    - the authentication provider is contacted to work with the identity asserter to establish the identity of the current user and create a subject object for this user
    - the application can access the subject and principals
    - ADF Security recognizes the identity and the roles (based on the principals) and coordinates access based on this.
    the authentication method is client certificate. presumably this prompts WebLogic/OPS to use an identity asserter to work with custom headers and cookies ("... when you configure a web application to use CLIENT-CERT authentication. In this case, WebLogic can perform identity assertion based on values from request headers and cookies. If the header name or cookie name matches the active token type for the provider, the value is passed to the provider."). No login form should be presented to the user, as all information required to perform the authentication is already available.
    I am trying to understand what I must do to have the ADF application adopt the subject set by the authentication provider - if anything?!
    If you more ideas to share - I would love to hear them.
    best regards,
    Lucas

  • Heap Problem with weblogic.security.auth.login.PasswordCredential

    Hello,
    I am calling EJB's from a Tomcat 6.0.20. The EJB's are contained on a Weblogic 10 mp2. For getting EJBHome, I'm using the following InitialContext-Call:
    EJBHome home = null;
    try
    Properties initialContextProperties = new Properties();
    initialContextProps.put(InitialContext.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, initialContextFactory);
    initialContextProps.put(InitialContext.SECURITY_PRINCIPAL, username);
    initialContextProps.put(InitialContext.SECURITY_CREDENTIALS, password);
    initialContextProps.put(InitialContext.PROVIDER_URL, url);
    initialContext = new InitialContext(initialContextProps);
    Object objref = this.initialContext.lookup(jndiHomeName);
    home = (EJBHome) PortableRemoteObject.narrow(objref, narrowClass);
    finally
    if ( initialContext != null )
    try
    initialContext.close();
    catch(Throwable t)
    return home;
    The Problem is, that after a bulk test on the tomcat (Xmx=256MB), 200MB are filled with 1.500.000 instances of the following class:
    weblogic.security.auth.login.PasswordCredential
    Has somebody an idea how to remove these classes from tomcat heap, because now the result is an OutOfMemory?
    Best regards,
    sebbay

    Hi,
    The authenticate method would take the user and the password details from the environment
    (env) that is passed and after successful authentication would populate the subject with
    the principals (i.e user, group the user belongs to ..)
    It should work with any user that is defined in the WLS not just weblogic/weblogic.
    Do you have any other users defined and which group do they belong to?

    I am playing (learning) with weblogic.security.auth.login.UsernamePasswordLoginModule
    as a LoginModule using JAAS based authentication. Surprisingly, the only userid
    and password combination acceptable is uid=weblogic, pw=weblogic combination.
    I went through and looked at the example code under
    http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs70/security/cli_apps.html#1042212. I found that
    the UsernamePasswordLoginModule.login calls into
    if (url != null) {
    Environment env = new Environment();
    env.setProviderUrl(url);
    env.setSecurityPrincipal(username);
    env.setSecurityCredentials(password);
    try {
    Authenticate.authenticate(env, subject);
    Seems like UsernamePasswordLoginModule only is a router, as it instantiates an
    instance of Environemt using the userid and password and passes this Environemtn
    instance (env) to Authenticate.authenticate along with the empty Subject instance.
    I read about that the Subject instance will be filled in with Principals by the
    WL Server.
    My question is that firstly,
    1. As Authenticate.authenticate is not passed in the uid and pw, will it pick
    those from the env?
    2. Secondly, why does it only accept uid=weblogic & pw=weblogic.
    I will appreciate if some one can put me in the right direction.

  • Oracle 9I JAAS problem: javax.security.auth.login.LoginException

    I have problem with Oracle 9IAS JAAS. I got "javax.security.auth.login.LoginException: unable to find LoginModule class" no matter where I put the classfile, either on JVM options(-cp), WAR file, or add it on the Web Admin, or manually edit 9iAS's configuration file.
    None works, any one can help, I am using JDK1.3
    I had the same problem on Tomcat, but I solved the problem by put the Class in the the JVM's classpath. But for 9iAS, it just ain't work.
    Thank you for the help

    Bet you have solved this, but
    the right place for jaas related stuff is
    as installed extension i.e:
    jre/lib/ext
    where jaas.jar and jars containing login modules should be located.
