Seeing hidden folders on a Mac

Alright, so my school has decided to switch to Macs... Whoopdy hoo.
ANYWAY, In order to get around iTunes from coming up with the ! in a circle when trying to play directly in it, I need to get into the root folder with all of the music inside of it, and drag and drop all of the songs into a new playlist. How would I get an eMac to make the invisible folder appear?

Open up a Terminal window and type the following two commands to allow the Finder to display hidden files & folders:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder
You should now be able to see the iPod_Control folder when you double-click your iPod icon on the desktop.
A word of warning... it's probably not the best idea to have Finder diplaying hidden files & folders all the time. You should be very careful, and only use the above when necessary.
To revert back to hiding the hidden files & folders... issue these two commands from a Terminal window:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
killall Finder
I have to give my little disclaimer here...
I rather not take any responsibility if what you're doing is not permitted by your school. If something bad happens, you're on your own.

I went to Notes.  Showed all notes.  Three notes are duplicated, one on iCloud and one on Icloud.  I deleted one of the notes and checked to see if the other still existed.  It did.  I deleted the other two notes.  I check all notes and found that the three notes were deleted on both accounts.  The only notes on this device are under On My iPad.
I went into system settings and tried to delete the Icloud account.  The warning comes up:  This will delete all IMAP notes on your device.  Will this also delete the notes in On My iPad?

  • Cannot see all folders on remote Mac, even when "Connect As" admin user

Shouldn't an "admin user" be able to see all folders, including Desktop, Documents, etc. of other users? I'd like to be able to see all folders.
    Thanks

    I don't think so.
    Try this.
On your Mac, in Finder, click on the top item in Sidebar, Macintosh HD
    Now open Users
Now click on a user that is not you.
If your system is like mine, you will see red dots on most of the folders, meaning you do not have access to them.
If you can't do it locally, then it's probably not possible to do it remotely.
An administrator account does not have universal privileges.

  • View hidden folders

this drives me crazy, mac has screwed up again....
how in do you change the preferences so you can see hidden folders?  I need to port data from cpu to the other that must land in the library folder under the user account on the new machine and I cant freakin find it.....
    thoughts?

Open terminal and type (or copy and paste) this line then hit Enter.
    defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
All folders & files will be visible.

  • Show hidden folders

    Hi;
I am trying to get my iPod Touch backup on an external drive, but the folder is hidden. How do I show hidden folders? (new to Mac)
    Thank you.

To show hidden folders on your mac, open terminal and type (or copy/paste):
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
To hide the hidden folders change the true to false. Hope this helps!

  • View hidden folders on Mac

I just bought a new MacBook Pro and I want to backup my iPod on it. I have done this before on Windows by viewing the hidden folders, but I don't know how to do it on a Mac. Help?

    Hello Buffa1o,
    And welcome to  Discussions!
There are a couple ways to do this, but I am going to stick with the terminal method, because I find it to be the quickest and most convenient. So head to *Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal*. When the window pops up, type this command in verbatim:
*defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE* -> Hit Enter to execute it and then type...
*killall Finder* and again hit Enter.
From there you should be able to open your iPod via Finder and see the iPod_Control folder that contains all your iPod's stored media. When you are finished, type the same 2 commands supplied above, except change TRUE to FALSE.
    Hope this helps.

  • MY system folder, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac) How do I remove them

I have a Macbook Pro running Leopard 10.5.8. I had a problem with my my operating system (my fault, I moved a file I shoudnt have) couldnt boot up but was able to boot up from a backup. I managed to repair my original system except now all the system folders, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac).  For the most part the dupes are an exact copy, but not always.  I want to remove them to free up space and cant imagine duplicate folders in the /system/library are not hindering my computer. But I dont know where to start and am afraid of doing irreparable damage. Any ideas

  • How do i set up my iOS devices to see my mail folders from my Mac?

how do i set up my iOS devices to see my mail folders from my Mac?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your mail folders are actually "on my Mac" then your iOS devices cannot be set up to see them. However, if your mail folders are within your email service account and your email service is an IMAP account, then the folders should sync between devices.

  • Server 4.0 stopped Macs seeing certain folders on server

    Hi everyone,
So we upgraded our server to 4.0 and now the 2 macs that are still running Snow Leopard and Lion don't see certain folders on the server.
So for instance (using the same user as a Mac running Yosemite) these two older macs DO NOT see the Studio folder, but they DO see a few other folders on the server.
How can that be possible? They could see the Studio folder when the server was on mavericks with Server 3.0
    AND
We migrated all the info over so everything should have stayed the same.
    Thanks

    Issue fixed.
    Turned off ACL on server.
    Thanks

  • CAN'T SEE SHARED FOLDERS FROM THE PC ON MY MAC SINCE  SNOW LEOPARD UPGRADE

HELP! Ever since I've installed Snow Leopard on my iMac, I don't see my folders I selected for sharing from the Microsoft PC computer in my network anymore. I can't seem to locate anything. However the PC is able to see the folders from my iMac. If anyone has solutions to this problem, your help would greatly be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Pat

Your problem is probably the same one I described in my thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2133962&tstart=0
The problem in my case, seems to be that the SL mac is not setting itself as the master browser, so when a Windows PC is switched on, it doesn't update that computer in the finder sidebar.
You can see if this is the case, by opening terminal, and typing:
    nmblookup -M -- -
If it comes back with "name_query failed to find name _MSBROWSE_#01" then you've got the same problem as me. With Leopard, my mac would report back as the master browser.
It's got nothing to do with the firewall (I've tried turning mine off ,to no avail). Also, my workgroup is correct, and smb sharing is turned on for the user.

  • ICloud + Apple mail; can I see content in mail folders on my mac?

Question for those who know iCloud.
If I am using iCloud + Apple mail; can I see content in mail folders on my mac?
Have 2 email accounts currently (yahoo and gmail), and use smart rules to move my email to them for organization automatically, issue is then I cannot see them on my iPhone mail, they are there, then "gone" when moved to the iMac folder.
    https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-MltXmqSQAXI/UkjrwPwtQmI/AAAAAAAAQk8/qwuOU7FFj dI/s720/iMac%2520mail.jpg

I don't see any evidence of an iCloud account there - do you actually have an @icloud.com address? iCloud syncs only its own email, it has no relationship to any other service.
However, if both your Mac and your iPhone are receiving, for example, Gmail, and you move a message on your Mac from the Gmail mailbos to a mailbox in the list under 'On My Mac' then this removes it from the GMail mailbox and as it's only on the Mac the iPhone cannot see it. In order to do what you want you have to create any new mailboxes on the GMail account itself and move the messages there.

  • I can access my Vista PC folders form my MAC but can't see the Docs within

    Hi,
Just got my first MAC and love it.
I do however have loads of files on my VISTA PC that I am trying to access from it. I have set-up sharing so I can see the Vista Machine and Folders from my MAC, however the Folders always seem empty ie. I can open the Vista Folder but can;t see what's in it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Sean

Hi Sean, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Is the Vista PC asking for a Password? It should & needs to be setup for one if not.
Also, what happens when in the Finder>Go menu>Connect to Server, and then type the ip of the vista pc in the windows, like...
    smb://ip.of.the.vistapc

Do external hard drives mounted on my Mac get backed up by time machine on a time capsule wireless apple external hard disk? How can I see what folders have been actually backed up in the external wireless disk? any help would be appreciated

They can provided you remove them from the Exclude list. Normally, Time Machine does not automatically backup external drives.

  • Can other Macs see account 2 on my Mac and some folders from account 1?

At the office where my colleagues are on WinXP, I have setup a standard account named 'Administrator' on my Powerbook, which can access all my main account's (named 'Alex') folders except for some private ones. This way, colleagues, who typically leave their user name on Windows as 'Administrator' can log in remotely and share job files on my disk without me having to give them my password or having to place job files in the Shared folder.
Yesterday I tried to do the same from another Powerbook, but if I logged in as 'Administrator', there was no way to access the /Users/alex/ folders; I could only access /Users/administrator.
Can it be done (without SharePoints)?
    Many thanks, as always.

From Windows, I enter in the url bar:
    \\albook\administrator
and press enter, then enter 'Administrator' and empty for User Name and Password. Once I am logged into the 'Administrator' account, I can then type
    \\albook\alex
in the url bar, and I can see the folders in [My_Powerbook]/Users/alex/ and access the contents of those folders for which I have set the Read Only permission for 'Others'.
As far as your other suggestion is concerned, I thought of that, too, but I am not in front of the other Powerbook right now (I am at work ). I will try it later on tonight.
