Segfaults (firefox, gecko-mediaplayer, libc, xulrunner?)
Hi,
Dutch television has a large website with many videos to view online, but it doesn't work because it segfaults all the time. I use Firefox with the gecko-mediaplayer-plugins to stream the videos. I have all the latest software versions, but instead of videos I only get kernelmessages. As an example, the next link results in these kind of segfaults:
http://player.omroep.nl/?serid=1437
plugin-containe[12621]: segfault at 6 ip b5d06247 sp bf91c36c error 4 in libc-2.14.so[b5c8c000+162000]
plugin-containe[12721]: segfault at 6 ip b5d58247 sp bfbaa1ec error 4 in libc-2.14.so[b5cde000+162000]
plugin-containe[13020]: segfault at 6 ip b5c97247 sp bff7964c error 4 in libc-2.14.so[b5c1d000+162000]
plugin-containe[13198]: segfault at 6 ip b5cc6247 sp bffc90ec error 4 in libc-2.14.so[b5c4c000+162000]
plugin-containe[13269]: segfault at 6 ip b5e73247 sp bf8cfcac error 4 in libc-2.14.so[b5df9000+162000]
The website offers two formats (Windows Media Player, and Silverlight/Moonlight), but these segfaults happen with the WMP-setting (and Moonlight simply fails to install...)
Does anybody know how to fix this? I reinstalled all the relevant programs I guess (firefox, gecko-mediaplayer, glibc, xulrunner) but to no avail.
Thanks,
Rogier
An update on this: downgrading to 1.0.3 resolves the issue.
Gecko-mediaplayer developer claims that it's mplayer the one at fault, and a newer version of it is needed. How new- still obscure to me.

(!apple video) with gnome-mplayer & gecko-mediaplayer
I'm trying to watch these video lectures for my trig class. Can't get them to play. installed firefox 3 (branded) along with gecko-mediaplayer and gnome-mplayer. I'm running arch32 and am having the same problem in kde as I had in gnome. Not sure what the deal is since it appears to start playing but stops almost immediately. Firefox doesnt crash or anything, but the video window just opens gnome-mplayer and displays stopped in the status bar.
Here is a link to the video
http://asp.mathxl.com/info/mmlib_mov.as … 4_MSTR.mov
BTW arch rocks.
- RustyYepp, this doesn't seem to work... If you try to download the file, it actually only downloads a file named mmlib_mov.asp, which contains the following test

Where to put in the Wiki: problems with chromium and gecko-mediaplayer
Hej,
I had some problems to watch embedded wmv files in chromium.
The gecko-mediaplayer plugin did not work, but complained about not being able to load the windows media plugin, although it was correctly installed in the lib-dirs.
Seems this is a common problem on a lot of *nixes, although I did not find a lot regarding arch.
Solution was to use the totem-plugin instead of gecko-mediaplayer.
I wonder what is the correct place to add this to the wiki. Should I just put a note on the browser plugin page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Browser_Plugins)?
ZaneIt's fairly old, but have you tried https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=113548 ?
However https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Browser_Plugins can be a good place indeed, it already has a troubleshooting entry for gecko mediaplayer.
EDIT: typo

How to install gecko-mediaplayer without corrupting kde fonts
Hi,
After installing gecko-mediaplayer with pacman, the Sans Serif and Monospace fonts I use in KDE went kind of fuzzy. Removing gecko and its dependencies restored the fonts to their proper state. I'm guessing its something to do with the fact that gecko requires ttf-dejavu as a dependency. Does anyone know why this might be happening? It's not a huge issue (I'm sure I can live without gecko) I'm just curious to understand why.(This is a slightly old post, but not responded to -- I have been looking for details on this for days and finally figured it out for the most part on my own. I figured I'd share my results and respond at the same time)
You're right, it does have something to do with ttf-dejavu. I could repeatedly install that dependency, close konsole, reopen it -- and the fonts were corrupted. Uninstall it, close konsole, open it -- fonts are fine again. While looking around and not finding anything, I finally came across some faq that said to install all of this crap, which ONLY MADE THINGS WORSE:
font-bh-ttf ttf-cheapskate ttf-isabella ttf-junicode ttf-ms-fonts ttf-dejavu ttf-mph-2b-damase artwiz-fonts terminus-font font-bitstream-speedo gsfonts ttf-bitstream-vera xf86bigfontproto xorg-fonts-100dpi xorg-fonts-75dpi xorg-fonts-alias xorg-fonts-encodings xorg-fonts-misc xorg-fonts-type1 ftgl font-mathematica ttf-freefont
It made things 'worse' because even after uninstalling those things (unlike what happened with ttf-dejavu), which had my whole desktop with corrupted fonts, the problem wouldn't go away. It led to the conclusion that ttf fonts clearly screwed everything up. Other fonts seemed to work fine. Checked xorg, and freetype2 was loaded as a module and installed, bitmap was loaded as a module, blah blah. I made a new account just out of curiosity..... amazingly, the fonts were weird but working properly. No more strange corruption. So, I went around looking for font folders or whatnot to get rid of in the hopes that starting over would fix it.
It did fix it.
I think all I did was..
rm -r ~/.fontconfig ~/.fonts ~/.fonts.conf and rebooted for grins. It worked fine for me \o/. Even better, installing ttf-dejavu and all the crap above after that also worked properly after that.
However, I would note that occasionally when I would open konsole, it would be screwed up again. Closing it and opening it again fixed it. I did fc-cache -fs afterwards (as the NORMAL user) in the hopes it would cure that and I haven't seen it happen since, though it could be a coincidence.
LONG STORY SHORT:
(normal user)
rm -r ~/.fontconfig ~/.fonts ~/.fonts.conf
fc-cache -fs
reboot
Good to go if xorg has the right modules and all the ttf stuff is installed.
Good luck
Edit: ...sigh. Wtf. Plasma randomly crashed, and the fonts are corrupted again, and none of the above folders exist anymore...
Edit2: .....wtf? logging out and in after the above crash, everything is correct again. except konsole, which (like usual after installing ttf stuff) is corrupted until closing it once then opening it again. i wish someone would figure out how to permanently deal with this.
Edit3: It seems after everything is 'fixed' there are a few things that aren't, so I suspect there's another font file/folder somewhere I need to get rid of. alt+f2 brings up krunner or whatever, and the fonts are totally corrupted as before. I'll post if I figured it out, though it's not a high priority atm.

Greetings archers,
Today I`ve -Syu`ed my system which is running Gnome 3 on it (64 bit installation of Arch). Everything was working just awesome but now almost everything is crashing with a very strange behavior.
For example, flash plugin is crashing when watching youtube videos in fullscreen, nautilus is crashing when trying to move/drag the icons, chromium is crashing when trying to type something in the address bar.
The following error message is being written immediatelly after the crash occures.
May 5 15:53:54 localhost kernel: [ 2675.133040] chromium[6697]: segfault at 7fffece75fe8 ip 00007f6494808845 sp 00007fffece75ff0 error 6 in libc-2.13.so[7f64947a5000+154000]

I've searched on the Internet and I was unable to find any tip or something which I need to implement in order to fix this issue.
Also, I do not know what this 'libc-2.13.so' library is exactly used for? Can some one point me to some direction?
EDIT: I've found that 'libc-2.13.so' is apart of 'glibc' and 'lib32-glibc' (the GNU C Library), so I need to check which version is currently installed on my laptop once I get home and will try downgrading it and check if that helps.
Additionally, I've searched the Internet deeper and did not find anything similar to this except this ONE.
At this moment I'm not knowledgeable to narrow this issue down. Is some one else experiencing this behavior?
Thanks,
Daniel

Once I switched the cursors back to the Gnome 3 original skin, everything is again working perfectly. This thread can be closed or something.
Thanks. -
Got this error. Tried to download and reinstall latest version. Said that it installed/upgraded ok. Tried to run again and got same crash.
The updater wasn't able to update all the files and some were left as older versions.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
* Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
* Uninstall your current Firefox version.
* Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
* It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox. -
Can I make Firefox/Gecko on Linux look like IE on Windows?
Quoeth the obnoxious "Big Easy Button"-toting Staples website, as I tried to apply for a job...
Unsupported Web Browser or Operating System
To ensure all functions of the Staples application perform correctly, you may not apply online using an unsupported web browser or operating system. Please see the list of supported web browsers and operating systems below – you may not continue with the application in an unsupported browser and/or operating system.
You must also have JavaScript enabled and an Internet connection at 56 kbps or higher. For more information on enabling JavaScript, see your browser's Help.
Supported Web Browsers:
* Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x
* Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x (Click here to download the latest IE browser)
* Netscape Navigator 7.x (Click here to download the latest Netscape browser)
Please note that "beta" versions of web browsers are not supported. If you are an AOL user, please complete your application with an alternate supported browser after you have opened your AOL network connection.
Supported Operating Systems:
* Windows 98
* Windows 2000
* Windows XP
I was fortunately able to apply on a Windows machine (using Firefox - take that, Staples!); but if a corporation such as Staples is willing to use this kind of annoying platform blocking, I'm liable to encounter it in the future. So how do I make Firefox or Epiphany look like IE (or Netscape) on Windows, so that I can avoid this garbage?Well, they're not exactly losing custom since it's a job application, but in priciple I'm with Thomas. There's no excuse for locking out non-MS browsers these days (if there ever was). Hell, my bank is completely unconcerned about me using Konqueror; why should Staples be so fussy?
There is something strangely satisfying in getting round these restrictions, though. "Not supported, eh? I'll show you what's not supported, you CENSOREDs." -
[ Solved ] Firefox profile cannot be loaded .
After a few weeks of not updating , ( I was off line ), I updated and Firefox displays the following message ;
" Your profile cannot be loaded . It may be missing or inaccesible. "
In ' Home ' I have .mozilla-backup and under properties - owner is , ( in a blue ? box ) , the word ' Me ' , .
I have notta clue , I've googled and found mostly window answers .
However if I start Firefox in a Terminal , ( sudo ) , it will open , no bookmarks , homepages , add-ons are not present .
Like a New Install if that sounds right .

Googling brought up 'Ubuntu' forums dated back in February .
To recap clicking on Firefox Icon displays Error Message .
Using ' sudo ' in Terminal Firefox does run - Stripped Down - no bookmarks - no add ons - no passwords .
Thank You for any and all suggestions .

Troubles with installing Firefox 21 from the tar archive on linux
I wanted to have a recent firefox instead of the old Iceweasel on my debian linux distro, so I did:
- removed Iceweasel unsing APT
- downloaded the .tar.bz2 archive and extracted it in /user/lib. This created a firefox folder in /user/lib.
- created a link with
# ln -s /user/lib/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox
When I tried to run firfox from bash I got
"XPCOMGlueLoadError for file /usr/lib/firefox/libxpcom.so"
Searching a little I saw that in /user/lib/firefox
#ldd libpxpcom.so
give me the missing dependencies: there were two: libxul.so and libmozalloc,so
For the first, I did, in /user/lib
# ln -s /usr/lib/xulrunner/libxul.so libxul.so
But libmozalloc.so is in the xulrunner and firefox folders, and doing a link with
# ln -s /usr/lib/xulrunner/libmozalloc.so libmozalloc.so
just change the error message, which is now
"XPCOMGlueLoadError for file /usr/lib/firefox/libxpcom.so:
/usr/lib/firefox/libxpcom.so: undefined symbol: NS_DebugBreak_P
Couldn't load XPCOM."
Thanks for any suggestion on how to setup this.Hm? here's something interesting. In my profile directory, I found a file called 'pluginreg.dat'. It contained this data:

Firefox 2.0.0.9 crashes
Hi, I'm encountering frequent Firefox crashes. This is what I get:
[dante4d@arch ~]$ firefox
(gecko:11896): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_destroy: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
The program 'gecko' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadIDChoice (invalid resource ID chosen for this connection)'.
(Details: serial 35057668 error_code 14 request_code 55 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
This happens mostly when I view very dynamic pages (like some chat windows that refresh often) and open lots of popup windows. I'm using kgtk-wrapper. Firefox seems very memory unconservative too.
Anyone suggestions? I don't want to relaunch ff every 5 minutes although session restore works nearly fine.
Using different browser is not a solution as I like my extensions. What about ff 3.0?
Some more output:

Is there an extra setup step to get gnash working with firefox? I installed gnash-gtk which brought down gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg agg gnash-common gnash-gtk. I can't seem to view flash content though, for example youtube videos give: "an error occurred, please try again later."

A possible explanation why firefox is bloated
I found this on a german blog... The guy who writes this has definitely an idea what he is writing about, because he is the author of some wonderful programs like dietlibc or minit...
Here is the translation:
Ok, now I am officially shocked. I let run Firefox with the Malloc Wrapper, loaded digg.com, and then clicked on two links before I closed Firefox again. The whole process took only seconds, and the malloc log was nearly 150 MB big. In it were approximately 1 million malloc and calloc and approximately 2 millions realloc and free. That is barbarian, how inefficiently nowadays one programs! Have the people no shame?! Unbelievably.
I am quite amused by this
...and it goes further:
Scary! I let an evaluation script run over the Firefox Malloc trace, and there are messages coming like this:
free called on non-malloced pointer 0x2aaaaeb11010!?
Oh no! And 70k complaints over frees on pointers, which did not came out of malloc or realloc. ELF guarantees that also libc internal calls e.g. from opendir/closedir are returned, so to that extent I am genuinly at being astonished just how it could came to it. In any case the above free is bogus, because this address is on the stack. If such is handed over to a free(), then its a major fuckup and can also have safety consequences. Man man man, the software around us is genuinly just for the foot.
He also wrote in a former article that he will check this with some other software like KDE, so i am definitely looking forward for the results
ps: translation is not perfect, but i think you'll get the point...stonecrest wrote:

Yes, because I have reasons for that. I don't see a problem here.

I don't criticize Firefox because I like Opera. Period!
I use Firefox too (on my Xfce/GTK-only server and on Windows for testing web pages in it).
And I do like some ideas in it, and some plugins. So I'm not a troll.
I just want Firefox to be better than it is now (IMHO).
I know that you really like Firefox (hence the reason you need to glorify firefox in every firefox-related thread) (that's a troll sentence really )

I do know about this, but this is too late and to slow development IMHO.
I want to see more like this instead of silly advertisements about "new" "features" in Firefox.
Gecko is good engine, but it needs more attention (code cleanup and bug fixes).
I am really impressed by recent improvements in KHTML/WebKit, Presto (Opera's engine) and Prince (HTML to PDF rendering engine), while Gecko is still behind them (which was not the case few years ago when main development was done on Mozilla Suite).
So stop thinking about me as just "Opera lover" and "Firefox (Gecko) hater". This is simply not true. Period. -
Hello!
Im having trouble streaming .ASX streams. realplayer format works fine. but some for some reason .asxfiles wont play.
I got it to work one time. and now i dont know whats the difference in my setup.
Im using: Firefox + gnome-mplayer and gecko-mediaplayer from pacman. i even tried the gnome-mplayer-svn and gecko-mediaplayer-svn
any ideas? The problem with ASX files is that they're not media files; They're simply text files with a pointer to a media file or some other data telling the calling application what it should do with it. It's a URL within a URL so to speak. Look at this thread for instance. The response is from gecko-mediaplayer's creator:
http://groups.google.com/group/gecko-me … 43b46156e3
He says quite clearly that the way that the URL is passed in this case makes it impossible for the plug-in to catch it.
As you said, some ASX files use to work. And I'm guessing that older ones still do. But, Microsoft likes to obfuscate the format in the same way that Apple likes to screw up their trailer site to pretend that they have the superior technology.
