Self-noding on a G5 Quad

I have a strange issue - wondering if anyone else has had this happen:
I had 4gb of ram in my machine and it would self-node fairly consistently.
Node buttons lit up green and I could look at the dock and see that the
node icon had changed from 2 dimensional to 3; a sign that the machine and node
were talking.
Ram being cheap, I dropped in 2 2gb sticks from OWC, they show up great and
no problems.
However, now the machine will no longer self-node. Strange - not the end of the world,
but in a way the extra ram is not helping or hurting. It's kind of a draw.
Has anyone else had this happen? I haven't pulled the ram to see if it will start noding
again, as I can't really return it, but I guess that would be the next step..
Thanks!
Also - though it doesn't seem to node, under the cpu usage it changes from "HD" to "Node HD".
I never noticed this, and am not sure what that means......

I checked the manual - seems "node" and "HD" should be the monitors for the node and I/O.
But the node doesn't seem to work.... Still get system overloads.....

G5s came out two years ago. It took another 18 months or so for CS2 and Tiger to begin to leverage that G5 and begin to better utilize more than 2 or 4GB address space.
Sometimes programmmers follow Apple guidelines, sometimes they think they know a trick or two to make things work better. Notice how Tiger takes over and provides caching.
Tiger has much much better thread management/creation.
It takes time to learn how to use, optimize and write for G5, and to use Xcode (2.2). Plus, you really need access to machines to test and run code on. One guess, that in six months Tiger will help bridge four cores better. And Adobe will monitor their code, threading, memory handling, and see if there are problems.
One question, how different or alike is it to have dual core AND dual proceessor? A decision tree is no longer A:B but needs to look at A:D to see who is busy and who is waiting.

  • Nodes on 8.0.1

    Hi all,
Anyone got Nodes working on 8.0.1 OK? It worked for me on 8.0 but I hadn't tested it under 8.0.1 until today.
Main machine: Mac Pro Quad 2.66 GHz 8GB
Node machine: Mac Mini Core 2 duo 2 GHz 2GB
    Both at 10.5.2
    Logic 8.0.1
    Logic Node 8.0.1
    Ethernet working fine
    Firewall open
Finder on each machine sees the other
Mac Pro Logic 8 sees Mac Mini on Nodes pane of Audio Prefs
Clicked on "Process on Nodes" buttons on Arrange pane
Trouble is the "Process on Nodes" buttons are only ever in their Enabled/Active (grey twin arrow) state.
Funnily enough, when self-noding on the Mac Pro, the buttons go to Sync Pending state but never go totally green. I see neither Sync Pending nor Enabled/Active when trying to node to the Mac Mini.
    Any help very gratefully received.
    Pete

Hmm... I'll check the manual but I thought the green arrow means synced AND processing. I have never had a totally green button (similar to Frozen Track/Mute/Solo). Are you sure about this?
I have observed the green arrow pop off and on on Node-enabled tracks -- indicating to me Logic moved them to the node when I was maxing out CPU power on my main box. Also, I've observed the green arrow on some Node-enabled tracks, but greyed on other Node-enabled tracks during the same session, which I took to mean Logic was offloading tracks only on an as-needed basis. I do see the Node usage indicator on the transport bar fluctuate when this happens, also suggesting Node use.
I will check the node activity monitor once I am home.
And yeah, I know my limitations... I can play a pretty decent geetar solo in the manner of Roy Buchanan or Jimmy Page but a poet I ain't and I know it...

  • Mac Pro 2.66 Quad-Core 1GBRAM, how much more RAM and HOW?

I just got my Mac Pro 2.66 Quad-Core, and I had a budget so I left the RAM down @ only 1GB because I knew I could upgrade it later. Well later is here & I want to put more in it, but I hear it is a little more complicated than the sensless shoving of big ram chips into empty slots...
I am a heavy user of Logic 7, soon to be of Logic Studio, and hopefully I will be using AutoCAD at home soon (for school). How much RAM would be optimal for me to eventually have? Right now I think I can afford to purchase 2GB more, but I dont know how exactly to put it into my machine. Right now it has a 512MB per xeon.
    Can anyone help me out?

    I just pulled out 1GB (2 x 512MB) simms in replaced them with 4GB (2 x 2GB) simms.
I had added more memory as 2 GB (1x2GB) and ran out of space. Now I have a total of 11GB RAM:
    1GB = 2 x 512MB
    2GB = 2 x 1GB
    8GB = 4 x 2GB
Leaving me with 2x512MB simms sitting in the box on the self. Sure wish I knew someone local I could give these things to for a reasonable price. Anyway, I wouldn't go any higher than 2GB simms (4GB) as that seems to currently have the best price/space ratio. Crucial is good enough and order it from NewEgg.com or MacConnection.com and you'll get a good price (I got mine at MacConnection.com).

  • New Airport Extreme not working with my Quad Macpro

    Hi all-
My Linksys 902.11b router finally died and our household is now completely Mac-based (all with Airport Extreme cards), so I decided to take the plunge and get an Airport Extreme.
2 of the machines on my home's network are doing fine with the router and are getting good speeds - iMac Dual 2.4 (10.5.1) - Both the wired and wireless connections are solid with this machine / Macbook Dual 2.0 (10.5.1) - Both the wired and wireless connections are solid with this machine as well.
I have a Macpro Quad 2.66 machine running 10.4.11. I cannot upgrade to 10.5 yet on this machine since it's being used in my recording studio business and there are known issues with some of my apps and 10.5 at the moment.
The Quad can see the network and has seemingly strong signal from the Airport Extreme BS, but DHCP reception is inconsistent (the machine often eds up using a self-assigned IP for some reason) and IP connectivity in general is inconsistent, even when an appropriate static LAN IP is manually setup. I can often get to a few webpages while using a manually config'd IP, but only with very slow DL speeds and then the connection quickly disappears and drops out entirely.
The AExtreme is setup like this: DSL Modem-->Airport Extreme (config'd with a static IP from my ISP) -->DHCP broadcast dummy IP's to my network. Currently I've not setup any security since I'm in the process of troubleshooting and I don't want to further complicate the situation. Radio-mode on the AExtreme is set to 802.11n (b/g compatible)/Channel 1. I've tried numerous config setups on the AExtreme, but none have helped the situation.
I've also disabled IPv6 on all clients per some reading on the forums of possible issues.
Anyone know what the problem might be? Is it perhaps an issue because the Macpro's using 10.4.11?
FYI, I've also also got an extra Airport Express around that's not being used that could be used as a repeater/wired connection downstairs if broadcast strength is the issue, which seems somewhat unlikely to me. I'm not sure how to config the AExpress to work in this capacity though, so if anyone could point me to a tutorial I'd appreciate it very much.
    Thanks in advance.
    Lee

I just did some more testing using an app mentioned here on the forums, iStumbler. The app offered these details:
    - Signal Strength is between 45%-56%
    - Noise is between 24%-41%
    - Freq = 2412
    - No websites load despite it's seeing the router and saying we've joined it.
I also did a screen capture of the iStumbler's screen in case that's helpful. There were several bits of info I wasn't sure about.
    Here's the screen grab: http://www.pbase.com/infiniteposse/image/91793322/original
    Thanks again...

  • "self-assigned' IP address.

Firstly to be semantic. Part of my frustration at this problem is the fact that Apple call this a "self-assigned" IP address. In no way have I assigned this IP address myself. My Macbook Pro assigned it for me.
I have had this problem intermittently since I bought my Macbook Pro years ago. The first time I found a solution by renewing my DHCP lease and sometimes that would work, sometimes not.
Second fix is a reboot, third fix is to make airport inactive and then re activate it again, fourth fix is to add new location from system preferences and then start from fix number one again
I have also tried various commands suggested for terminal and tried deleting folders that have been suggested as the cause.
But now returning from a trip overseas I get the "self [apple] - assigned IP address" message and none of the fixes that I have wasted my time applying in the past are working.
It's almost comical because just a week ago I was saying to somone how I was thinking of moving to PC as I had had enough of trying to fix problems with my Mac.
Hours of trawling the internet for a simple walk through of the problem suggests anything beyond what I  have already tried. I can't believe I have put up with this issue for so many years, just accepting that it's a small problem that occaisionally interupts the massive benefits of using a Mac.
So if anyone has a final suggestion of where to go to fix the problem [on line] I would be so releived of my frustrations. If not then I am heading out to buy a PC tomorrow and I will take great pleasure in destroying my Macbook Pro.

I have a little Macbook that connects to my wifi connection automatically without any problems and always has.
I have a much more expensive, much more powerful 2010 Mac Pro Quad Core which is totally incapable of jumping on to the same Wifi Connection. Even if both devices are right next to one another.
Of course, I have the usual 'Self Assigned IP' problem, and like you, I have trawled the internet endlessly following all sorts of guides, all sorts of DHCP Renewal methods and all sorts of manual methods and all sorts of Firewall settings etc etc etc.
In the end up, none of it ever works. Except for the very rare occasionally day I'll turn the Mac Pro on and it will have randomly decided to connect to the WIFI connection and work fine.
I gave up trying to figure it out. I can no longer connect to the internet so my Mac Pro has to live with no important updates etc. Not very future proof at all and extremely frustrating.
I run a busy recording studio so its solely the fault of this problem that I struggle to be as competitive as my rival studios as I can not preform the simple Audio software updates everyone else can. Brilliant.
    INFURIATING.

  • 2009 Mac Pro Quad Will Not Boot

    Hi.
I have a 2009 Quad 3.0Ghz Mac Pro that will not boot up.
I went to it this morning and the beach ball was spinning. I could not get it to stop and as a last resort, turned it off. It has been working fine, although
I have noticed a little slow (Could be me, though).
When I tried to reboot it, it tried to start, chime went off, but it stayed on the light grey screen and eventually, it had a folder with a question mark in it
    that blinked.
I disconnected all peripherals, no change.
Tried to boot from the optical drive  with Disk Warrior, no change.
    Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Brian

The Chime is generated in Software when the first part of the Power-On Self Test has passed. If an appropriate source of software can be found, booting is likely.
it had a folder with a question mark in it that blinked.
That says it could not find the last-specified source of software. the drive may be damaged, or it may have forgotten where it should be looking.
Tried to boot from the optical drive  with Disk Warrior, no change.
Next try a 10.6 DVD. "A Mac that cannot boot from an appropriate Installer/Utilities DVD has a Hardware problem".
One of the simplest things it should be able to do is Startup Manager. Hold down the Alt/Option key at startup and it should draw a gray or blue screen and slowly draw an Icon for each potentially-bootbale device (including a bootable DVD, if inserted).

  • Is really not possible to install  a WIFI card in my Quad?

I am being told that the only way to insall a WIFI card/upgrade kit in my Quad G5 is to take it in to a certified tech. Being overseas right now limits that option. Can I not just take the screwdriver to it and follow a visual manual(link need here if you know of one) and put that puppy in there? I am of the impression that i have to remove the whole CPU unit to get behind there to the location on the mother board where it is to slot in.
Whats the real scoop- is this just being said to rack up the $ or is there some special tool that is needed or is it too delicate an operation?
    Thank you,
    -todd

  • How many DSA Cards can be simultaneously Self Calibrated?

I have two PXI-1045 chassises connected to a single computer via a dual port MXI Express card.
Each of the two chassises have 12 PXI-4462 4 channel DSA cards.
I am using the "DAQmx Self Calibrate.vi", which takes about 156 seconds.
It appears that if place 24 of these DAQmx Self Calibrate VIs on my block diagram,
then it appears that 4 will finish after 156 seconds, then another 4 will finish after
another 156 seconds, and so on, until all are finished after a total of 936 seconds.
I have  found that 1, 2, 3, or 4 can be simultaneously self calibrated, but more than that requires additional time for each group of 4.
So my question is, is it possible to sell calibrate more than 4 at once?
My computer is a quad core, but I don't think this is the limiting factor.
Could it rather be some other resource, such as Triggers on the PXI bus, that are the limiting factor?

    Hey Kevin,
The problem you are running into is likely caused by the fact that LabVIEW allocates a default of 4 threads per priority per execution system.  DAQmx VIs by default run at the same priority and execution system as their caller (despite the existence of a "DAQ" execution system), so they are probably running at normal/standard:
While a .dll is being called by LabVIEW the thread is reserved.  So, 4 parallel calls to DAQmx Self Calibrate.vi (which call into nilvaiu.dll inside the subVI) will reserve all 4 threads that LabVIEW has allocated to the normal/standard priority and execution system.
To raise the number of threads that LabVIEW allocates, add the line "ESys.Normal=24" or whatever number you'd like to LabVIEW.ini.  You might also have to run threadconfig.vi (instructions found here).  The end result should look like this when you run threadconfig.vi (you'll have to restart LabVIEW after editing the .ini file):
You could technically just use threadconfig.vi to set the number of threads without manually editing the .ini file, but this only lets you allocate up to 8 threads per execution system per priority.  The number shown in < > is two higher than the actual number of threads allocated due to how the enum was defined in the vi.
    Best Regards,
    John Passiak

MacBook Pro Retina 13" - Can i upgrade the dual-core i7 to quad-core i7 CPU?  (obviously not talking about BTO, but about "self-service" upgrade ...)

Yeah it is soldered. So no upgrade possible. Found here: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/macbook-pro-retina-display-faq /macbook-pro-retina-display-processor-ram-expansion-slots.html

  • Macbook Pro: Dual Core i7 vs. Quad Core i7 for iMovie

    Hi-
Debating whether to purchase the 13" MBP 2.8 GHz dual-core i7, or whether to pony up $700 more for the 15" MBP 2.4 GHz quad-core i7.  Another consideration would be whether to install 4 GB extra of RAM to get 8 GB at the cost of $180.
Critical question here is whether video editing in iMovie would be OK with the dual-core i7 plus the extra RAM, or whether the quad-core is really necessary.  Anyone have some thoughts on this?  Thanks in advance.

Ralph has pointed you in the right direction regarding RAM.  Both MBP'a will do the job, but I suspect the 15" machine will have the edge.  That aside, another consideration is the screen size it self.  Larger is better to put it simply.  I have 17" MBPs for that purpose.  That becomes a very big price jump, but I'm spoiled.
Another factor to consider in working with video, is storage.  Video files can become very large.  Think about external storage and data flow for various types of connections.  Another advantage of the 17" MBP that it can accept and eSata connection (with an appropriate express card) where as the other MBPs cannot.  esata is significantly faster than Firewire, which in turn is faster than USB.  Naturally the enclosure will have to be eSata compatible.  Faster yet will be the Thunderbolt connection, but as of now I am not aware of any compatible enclosures.
    Ciao.

  • New 2011 dv7t Quad plays Runescape worse than 2009 dv7t quad. HELP

I customized and purchased a new HP Pavlilion dv7t Quad 2 weeks ago and have had it for one day now. I have run into a number of problems and, while at first I wanted to avoid having to send it in, I am afraid my device has too many unacceptable errors to be repaired by any local tech shop. I am making this post in the hopes that you can offer any support possible, but also in the hopes that you can provide me with an email I can contact which will allow me to type everything presented below, and recieve a quick, comprehensive response. Thank you so much for your time.
I purchased this HP Pavilion dv7t Quad because my 2009 HP Pavilion dv7t quad developed an error whereby its screen would go black and remain black after the windows launch animation disappeared. I purchased this laptop specifically because it is advertised as an entertainment laptop, and I expected it to be able to run the MMORPG RuneScape (Runescape.com) at max specs. However, I discovered that on this new laptop, if anti-aliasing is toggled, all in-game text is distorted and distracting black lines are generated in the game’s sidebar.  Disabling anti-aliasing is not acceptable as it renders the graphics untenable. My 2009 dv7t was able to run Runescape at max specs without any problems. It is unacceptable that an updated, more expensive model has fewer capabilities than its 2009 predecessor. There are many other examples of how this 2011 dv7t is less able than the 2009 dv7t. Both laptops have 17.3 inch displays. However, when the 2009 laptop opens a webpage on Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Google Chrome, and views the web page at 100% zoom, the page is perfectly sized; on the other hand, when webpages are displayed at 100% zoom on the new 2011 dv7t, they are small and difficult to read. If I increase the zoom to 120%, the size becomes apparently corrected, but select images become distorted.
The “T” Key is sticking. When I press "t" it usually remains locked down, and I have to press it again for it to pop back up, and then press it another time to type the letter t.
There are times when my volume buttons do not seem to work. I will be listening to a Youtube video and press the “Turn volume up” key, which is also f11 superscripted, and the “Beats Audio” volume adjust animation will appear, and the animated CD will rotate, suggesting that the volume is being increased, but the volume does not actually increase.
The Track pad’s multi touch gestures, such as vertical scroll, are virtually nonexistent. The vertical scroll on my 2009 dv7t was without error.
The plastic base beneath the keys is not 100% sealed to the chassis, particularly around the “delete” key.
I purchased “Two 9 Cell Lithium-Ion Batteries” for the sole reason of having been told “By the way, to answer your prior query, the 9 cell battery is not an oversized one, John.” In response to the question: “Is a 9 cell lithium ion battery considered oversized on the dv7t?” However, upon arrival, I have discovered that the 9 cell battery does protrude from the base of my laptop. I want to exchange one of my 9 cells for a 6 cell, and receive the money back for the difference of price between the 2 batteries.
The  Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner protrudes slightly more than it should from the chassis.
The startup time of the laptop itself does not seem to be in par with startup times of other new laptops.
The last ¾” of the lid of my laptop seems to be made of plastic. It was my understanding in all promotional videos that I watched that the entire lid and palm-rest were to be made of metal.

This is a user to user forum and not a contact for HP, my self I live in Canada and help out where I am able.
If this were my machine I would return it and exchange it for a new one or get a refund on the sticking "T" key alone.
You say you only had it for a few days, here in Canada most reputable places have a 30 day money back policy. I would exercise that policy if you can.
It sounds like you have a lemon, either assembled Friday before the party or on a Monday after the hangover.
While some of the issues may be cured by adjustment (mouse pad problems) or a driver reinstall or update (volume problem), none of these things should be happening on a bran new computer, just get rid of it. It's supposed to run perfectly out of the box or at least you should not be experiencing any of the problems that you have mentioned.

  • FCP 5 Quits on start on new Quad - help!

I just set up my new G5 Quad 2.5 GHz Power Mac, with 8 GB added RAM. I t-booted my old iMac G5, and used the Apple set-up wizard to copy over my applications, libraries, etc. One of the apps was FCP 5.0.3 (a large part of why I got the Quad), but whenever I try to run Final Cut, it 1) fails to recognize the miniDV camera on the firewire port (which shows up fine on the iMac), and 2) immediately after I hit [Continue] on the missing DV device dialogue, Final Cut self-quits, leaving a report that I copied below. FCP quits without fail, at every attempt. I have reinstalled FCP 5.0 from my install disk, have updated the OS to 10.4.4 and FCP to 5.0.4, have thrown away prefs, repaired permissions, had the iMac on and off network, and made sure my Quicktime is 7.0.1 (pro). And I have a job that should start tomorrow, but which I may lose if cannot run FCP. Thanks! Error message follows:

  • Faster Processor: 3.5ghz quad i7 vs 3.7ghz quad Xeon?

    Which Processor is faster?
    3.5ghz quad i7 vs 3.7ghz quad Xeon?
So which is the faster processor for Logic X?
I think Logic supports hyper threading also....
It's basically iMac maxed out vs base level Mac Pro...
Which would be better for Logic Pro... How much faster at a guess do you think it will be?
I don't really need a top monitor and don't really need to graphics cards what do you suggest i go for?

If you will be using resource intensive applications in a vocational context frequently, the faster CPU will probably pay for it self.
If you are an avocational user, for the overwhelming majority of usage, there will little of any difference in performance when using most applications.  It then becomes more of a question of bragging rights.
To put it another way, if you live in the country, a Ferrari makes sense but not so in the center of Manhattan.
    Ciao.

  • Native HDV Jittery Images in Self Contained Movies

    Hello,
I am having problems with HDV footage captured in native HDV 1080i60
When we output footage as Quicktime Self-Contained Movies the result is very JITTERY images.
Whereas when we print to video directly from the timeline, there is no such jittery effect.
We are thinking that it may be a conform problem with the keyframes in self-contained movies.
Any idea why this is occurring?
    Thanks,
    Marc Griffin

I'm having a very similar problem. Here's what I did.
1.) Edit my awesome HDV shot and HDV edited project.
2.) Export as a self-contained movie to transfer to another workstation for printing to video
3.) On other system open self-contained video in FCP and "print to video."
The process completed successfully, but when played back from tape, the footage is jittery. The self contained movie itself plays back fine in quicktime. I was wondering if it has to do with the compression of frames and what fcp does in the conforming process. Would ticking the checkbox "recompress all frames" fix this problem? I have not yet tried that as everything requires rendering. And even on a G5 quad it takes 25+ minutes to render / conform the video.
    Thanks,
