Sending scripts to the command line

Is there a function I can use to send a script to the command line and capture what it sends to the standard output? For example, if I'm writing a java program that I want to execute adder.exe and store the output of adder.exe (which is just sent to standard output) in an array, how would I go about doing that?

Well, a scan of the documentation certainly provides no evidence of this capability. If it exists, someone else will have to fill us in.
I did have an idea, although it's a bit of a roundabout approach. A windows batch file can accept parameters and can write a text file. So, maybe Mif2Go can call a batch file instead that writes the folder to some file, then runs the script that reads the file. Although, I'm not familiar with a command line call to ES, so I'm not sure that a batch file can launch an ES script too. If not, can Mif2Go make more than one command line call?

How to execute SAPGUI script from the command line?

I have created a script and would like to execute it from the command line. There must be some flag that goes with SAPGUI.EXE. Any help appreciated.

Hi Jeff,
the best way to do this is to run the script using the Windows Script Host, for example like this:
cscript myscript.vbs
This will execute the script which in turn can access SAP GUI. You may however have to make sure the script attaches to the correct session.

Running a function from a powershell script from the command line

Rather than creating several scripts each with one function, I have one script with has several functions.... I would like to call the script and select the function i want to use from the command line.
so far, if i change directory to that of the script i can call the function by doing this:
cd c:\myscripts
. .\mytestscript.ps1; myfunction
this works fine.... i have also tried, what I would like to achieve is calling it like this
c:\myscripts\mytestscript.ps1; myfunction
however, i am trying to run this as part of an MDT task sequence, my command line looks like this and using the ; myfunction at the end doesn't work.
powershell.exe -ExecutionPolicy Bypass %SCRIPTROOT%\CustomScripts\mytestscript.ps1; myfunction
how can i adapt my command line so that it will successfully call the function within my script?

Rename the file from ps1 to psm1 and create a powershell module that contain multiple functions. A module will autoload like the built-in modules.
Placement of the psm1 file is important for Powershell to find and autoload it.
The file name and folder name must be the same, for example MyModule.psm1 should be in the folder:
user\documents\windowspowershell\modules\mymodule

Is there a way to generate job execution scripts from the command line?

The customer is planning to change DI production server configuraiton and needs to regenerate job execution scripts for hundreds of jobs. Their question is - instead of going through web admin and doing it one by one, is there a way to run a batch command and generate all jobs with the same job server information from one repository? I looked at the "al_engine" command but didn't find the options to do so. Did I miss something? This is for a DI 11.5.3 on HPUX.

Is there a way to switch between workspaces in Spaces from the command line? I want to write a script to set up certain applications in certain workspaces (without having to do it manually each time)...

Is there a way to switch between workspaces in Spaces from the comnand line? I use several workspaces from Spaces, each workspace having a certain number of fixed applications running. Rather than set all this up each time I log on, I'd like to write a script from the command line (I use gawk) to automate this. Currently I have a gawk script that, given a directory, opens a few xterms whose working directory is the given directory, and opens "preview" applied to a certain file in that directory. However, at present I have to manually move an xterm through each workspace and run my gawk script in each workspace (applied to each directory that I'm working on).
There must be a better way...

Addendum: Can this be done via: open -a Spaces --args xxx , where xxx is some set of arguments (or something like this)?

Run javascript (not in a jsx file) from the command line extendscript

I was wondering if anyone knew how to run javascript from the command line in Extendscript (meaning Extendscript would be the target application). I know about the -run command line flag in which allows you to run a .jsx script from the command line but what I'm looking for similar syntax to run a script directly without needing to put it in a file. For example I have tried (obviously unsuccessfully):
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe ExtendScript Toolkit CC\ExtendScript Toolkit.exe -run "alert('Hello World');"

Although that one is about executing JSX files, the solutions given (Applescript as well as COM/VBScript) can be adapted to simply run a javascript code snippet rather than JSX file because the solutions simply call the Adobe app's Applescript/COM API to "execute javascript" (actually execute ExtendScript technically), and in the solution, they using includes to pull in the JSX file. You'd simply replace the include with actual javascript code snippet inserted in.
Though this would then require you to run a VBScript, Applescript, or other script (that calls the COM/Applescript API) rather than the ESTK command line option.

Sending Reporting Services report via the command line

I would like to either execute a subscription that sends a report via email on demand. That or just email the report without having to edit the subscription date. Can this be done from the command line? I see there is the rs.exe utility
that allows you to deploy reports and run configuration commands, but I would like to execute and email the report. Is this possible?

The easiest way to run a subscription manually is to run the agent job in SQL server that is associated to the subscription. You'll need to know the subscription ID to do that. So, you could either run it through SSMS, or if it needs to be in
command line, interact with SQL Server via command line and do so.
You can use the ReportService2010 API methods and and powershell script to identify the subscription ID

Can't send files to Trash from the command line

Hello,
as I'm programming in JAVA I must do all "special" operations as from the command line.
I found several solutions but they don't work for me, at least not in Mavericks.
I tried:
osascript -e "tell app \"Finder\" to delete POSIX file \"/Users/me/totrash\""
I got:
21:60: execution error: Finder got an error: Handler can’t handle objects of this class. (-10010)
I tried:
echo "tell application \"Finder\" move POSIX file \"/Users/me/totrash\" to trash end tell | osascript
I got:
26:30: syntax error: Expected end of line but found command name. (-2741)
Is there any working AppleScript way to send a file to the Trash Bin?

Faxing to a Bonjour modem from the command line

I am trying to send a fax through an internal modem (on a G5 iMac) shared through Bonjour. I want to be able to use the command line (Terminal). The "fax" command works from the G5 iMac. But I can't seem to be able to fax from other computers sharing this modem.
I have tried to play with the fax, efax, lp, and lpr commands but can't seem to be able to get it right. How do I specify the modem in the command line for efax? Where is it under /dev?
When I use lp, I can't seem to be able to specify the phone number to dial, though the file is spooled correctly to the modem. The "-o phone=<number>" option did not work.
Can anyone help?

Okay, so I finally figured it out. It can be done using lp command but instead of specifying the shared modem (fax) as a shared device with its host name (e.g. "Internal Modem @ Mac_name" which converts to "Internalmodem___Macname" on the command line), one has to do it as this:
lp -d Internal_Modem -h Mac_name.local -o phone=<number> fileToFax
This way any older mac on the network can be a fax server and one can dispense with the problematic USB modems from Apple. The command can be passed to the Terminal by AppleScript using "do shell script 'lp...'"
I am using PDFpen in my paperless office and since it is scriptable, I can fax right from the application using this command thru AppleScript.

How do I open a PDF to a specific page via the command line?

Several questions about opening PDFs from the Mac OS X command line:
1) How do I use the "open" command to open a PDF to a specific page? (I know I can open a document via: open doc_name.pdf)
2) How do I use the "open" command to pass multiple arguments (page no, zoom scale, view mode, etc...) to open a PDF file in a specific manner?
3) Does Preview handle the same parameters as Acrobat Reader? If not, what are the differences in options?
I've spent hours searching for this answer and have come up dry. I've downloaded Adobe's "PDF Open Parameters" document -- it lists all of the parameters I need, however I can't get any of them to work from the command line.
My goal: Open a PDF from the command line to a specific page. At first glance, I thought this would be simple to do and find -- however, after a lot of searching I haven't found an example on how to do it.
Anyone have any experience doing this, and care to share?

I don't know of any way to do what you want using the 'open' command. It can probably be done with Applescript, which you could call from a shell script. The Preview application doesn't seem to be scriptable. I don't use Acrobat, so I can't tell you anything about that. Looking through the dictionaries of the apps I do have, it seems that Skim (another PDF viewer) has an AS 'page' class. Below are a couple of links that may get you started. Look for more specific guidance in Applescript forums.

How do i create a database template from the command line?

Hi,
As part of implementing a backup and recovery strategy for a client (including disaster recovery) I want to automate the creation of a database template From an Existing Database (Structure as well as data) via a script that will run every night.
The background to this is that we will also be using RMAN to take backups of the database concerned but the client does not want to wait while an RMAN backup is restored and so wants an additional level of insurance in the form of a ‘standby’ clone database.
The idea is that nightly we will run a script that creates a database template from the Existing Database (Structure as well as data) and then transfers the 2 files involved e.g. DB_data_included.dbc and DB_data_included.DFB across to a standby server where they can be used to recreate the database in the event of us needing to after e.g. a complete server failure.
So I have a couple of questions about this that I would be very grateful if something could answer for me:
1)     Is it possible? That is, can a database template be created from some utility by supplying a series of parameter=value pairs on the command line?
2)     If yes how do I go about it, what utility do I use (the emca utility?). and what parameters do I need to supply on the command line to create the template?
3)     The intention is that the script to create the template will run in the early hours of the morning when no-one is using the database but what state does the database need to be in when the template creation script runs i.e. up, down, mounted and does the creation of a template affect the state of an already up database i.e. if I kick off the template creation script and the database is up will it switch it into mount mode or anything like that? My concern here is that I want to make sure I understand exactly what is going on so that no users or connected external systems are affected?

Firstly thanks for you reponse.
However, I don’t agree that dbca only creates empty databases otherwise why does the option to create a template from an existing database (structure as well as data) exist in the dbca wizard?
I have performed a test case where I have a created a database template including data on one 10g server. I have then used the files generated to recreate that database on a separate server. When the new database is started it is an exact copy of the original. So it’s not empty at all , it’s exactly what the client wants.
So I don’t agree that I’m gaining zero.
Why is this approach doomed to fail?
There a number of reasons why I “just set up a proper standby database”
1.     Time – I’m on a customer site in a tight engagement where the customer wants maximum value for money. I don’t have standby database skills and the customer isn’t willing to pay for me to learn on the job so please understand the tight circumstances I’m working in.
2.     Availability – As far as I know the client is running 10.2.0.3.0 standard edition. Correct me if I’m wrong but is standby db available in that edition. Where do I look to check V$OPTION.
On the RMAN duplicating a database front it’s an area I haven’t used before but I will take a look at it.
Also please revisit the context of my original posting where I state

So please understand that this a quick fix that the client wants developed in the minimum time possible in ADDITION to a full nightly RMAN backup being taken.
