Sending someone a shortcut to a shared file location

Hi,
My workplace requires files to be stored on a very basic shared file server that we all connect to via smb.
Its getting very full and has a huge folder tree so I was wondering if there was a way to send via email/iChat a file shortcut that someone can click on and be taken to the correct location on the shared file server.

A file path should work if you are talking about the same OS between the two parties. (Mac and windows file paths differ greatly in parsing). Do you mean a alias or shortcut that is stored locally on the user's computer that links to the location or do you mean a shortcut that is stored on the smb share that links to a location on that smb share?

Hi Gerardo,
Collaboration uses the logging mechanisms of the J2EE Engine. Therefore it is the defaultTrace.trc under .../usr/sap/<SID>/Jxx/j2ee/cluster/serverX/log/ .

Are the shared files accessible to a sony bluray player

I have a Sony BluRay player that allows me to shared media from a Windows 7 PC. Will the shared files located on an external hard drive attached to the Air Extreme be viewable on my Sony BluRay?

Although the AirPort Extreme has a NAS function, it does not include a DLNA-compliant Media Server. You would need some type of this server (hardware or software) to stream any multimedia files located on the AirPort Disk to your Sony Blu-ray player.

How do I send someone a link so they can view my files?

I don't understand this "free" storage. I put some files on the cloud because I received a message about sharing file with others, but I don't see any way to do this, unless I upgrade to one of the plans. Since I don't have a need for this often, I am reluctant to sign up to a paid account.

No, you don't need a paid account. Read my instructions again:
On the list of your Acrobat.com files
check the file you want to send
click on the Send button on top of the page
under Send to, check Public Link
click on the Create Link button
on the Public Link Generated pop-up
copy the entire link address
send that link via email for the recipient to download
or
click on the Email Link button

I give up! Can I send someone the ID CS3 file and print file for Help

I have done everything I possibly can (given I am no where near expert), and can not figure this printing out.
I have a food menu that is on 11 x 17 (will be tri fold) ID file with a border. The border is a "Placed" PSD file into a separate ID layer.
Even though it looks perfect on the screen, I can not get it to print properly using an Epson Stylus 1400 series printer (wide body).
The border does not print correctly.
I can (and will if you want), print the menu to a file and send it to someone (along with the ID CS3 file and PSD file) to see if someone can tell me what stupid things I am doing.
I also believe I can print to a file, then bring the printed file up on the screen and do a Snagit Screen Grab to upload to pixentral.com If this is possible, you will see how the border did not print correctly. I would also take a screen grab of the ID CS3 menu file so you can see how the border is perfect.
I am hoping someone with a wide body printer can load 11 x 17 paper and try to see what I am doing wrong. I am printing it on 11 x 17, landscape, centered borderless stock and it looks good in preview mode.
Any and all help would be appreciated. At least I don't have those OOLLM phantom lines like I did on my last plea for help.

Looking at the last picture, I see what is going to be a bit of a problem for you, I think. Do you really have a thin red line around the outside of the yellow border?
Here's how bleeds work, and why they are set up the way they are. Printing, and more importantly, trimming, is done on mechanical equipment. Paper sizes may or may not be entirely uniform in a stack, or there may be minor alignment issues when jogging the stack, or there may be dust build-up, or any number of other little things that conspire to keep a stack of prints from being 100% perfectly aligned with each other, or a cutter setting may be off by a few thousandths of an inch making the trim larger than intended. In such cases there is a possibility that color intended to run all the way to the edge of the page may in fact stop short of the trimmed edge, leaving the paper showing.
To hide this, and that's all you are doing, hiding misalignments, areas of color at the edge of the page are extended beyond the page boundary, typically 1/8" in the US, so that the excess color will fill what would otherwise be a blank area after trimming. InDesign Allows you to set up a "Bleed Area" in the document setup, which adds a colored guide around the page for easy reference, and also allows you to check the "use Bleed Area" checkbox in the print dialog so you don't need to specify it manually.
Now for why that narrow red line is a problem, if it is really there. Printing presses typically can maintain sheet to sheet registration that is very accurate, but desktop printers are often off by as much as 1/16" in either direction from sheet to sheet. Further, there can be some paper stretching during the printing process, and the aforementioned dust build-up or slight errors in cutter setup, which can cause the paper to be trimmed slightly inside the intended mark. Also consider that if the paper is cut outside the mark on one edge, it will be cut the same distance inside on the opposite side.
So, if you have a thin line on the edge of the page, you need to be very accurate in both sheet-to-sheet registration AND in cutter setup or you risk cutting off the line on one or two edges completely, and leaving more than you planned on the opposite edges. The thinner the border is, the greater the risk of cutting it off, and the more small differences in position will show. (The difference between 1/16 and 1/8 is much more obvious than the difference between 1/16 and 3/8 )
As a corollary, jobs that bleed need to have a safe zone, or "live area" that is smaller than the page dimension by at least the amount of the bleed allowance all around so that trimming at the outside of the bleed on one edge doesn't end up cutting off something important on the opposite edge. The easiest way I can think of to visualize this is to think of trimming as if you were putting an open frame the finished size on top of the print, and you move it around so that the hole exposes more on one edge while hiding the opposite edge the same amount.

Leaving a comment on a shared file impossible

This is a Question to Adobe!
Commenting a File by Customers is not working!
When I or my costumers try to leave a comment on a shared file (by sending link) we always get the following message: "We´re sorry, we had trouble adding your comment. Please refresh the page and try again." Refreshing does not have any effect on this problem, the message appears again and again. Without the possibility to leave comments, the function to share e.g. show files is absolutely useless. Can someone help me how to get this function work?
I´ve been on Create Now Event at Hamburg two days ago and there this feature was shown. I´d like to use it but probably adobe showed things that don´t work yet?
I am not amused because there is no answere from someone at adobe!

Same problem for me. Of course we are on public link, otherwise we would not be able to send the link to the customer. The client, not Adobe adherent, access to documents but does not displays the comments that I wrote and he can not write.
Ms. Adobe boasts this feature. It would be nice if he answers.

Sharing files online

I have a simple requirement but all the online tutorials I have found don't seem to offer much help for Lion.
I just want to use my new MacBook Pro to host a basic fileserver in order to transfer some large files over the internet.
It seems that in older incarnation, when you activated Web Sharing, you were given an ip address which could be (I preseume?) access from outside the local network.
If this wasn't the case, is there a way using Lion to host your own webserver. I am aware of the Lion Server which is available as a paid for app, but I do not wish to purchase it for such a simple process. Is there a way to open up a folder to the internet which I can download from when I am not connected to my local network from another computer?
Sorry if this is a rehash of questions previously answered, but I wasn't able to find an acceptable solution.

Forgot to add that on the webpage that is accessable locally when I turn on web sharing, it says this:
If you’re connected to the Internet, your website can also be available to friends everywhere. Just send them the address shown in Sharing preferences.

The numbers I quoted there were from speedtest.net. If you want to know what my ISP says they provide, I'm afraid I don't know.
So passing those hurdles, what in particular do I need to do in order to allow someone external to my network access a web server, assuming I can host one?
Enter your router configuration screen and search for Port Forwarding or something similar. You must forward request coming from TCP port 80 towards TCP port 80 of your Mac's local IP address.
On your Mac, simply enable Web Sharing. If it is the first time you enable Web Sharing, also click on Create Personal Website Folder, which creates the folder Sites inside your home folder.
Put files you intend to share into
~/Sites
Your personal site is available to the outside world at this address
http://yourWanIP/~your_username/
You may want to create one or more subfolders into ~/Sites and give the exact path to your correspondent like this
http://yourWanIP/~your_username/family
http://yourWanIP/~your_username/customers

ITunes 10.0.1 no longer has Command-R shortcut to open root file of a song!

I can not believe that iTunes 10.0.1 no longer has the Command-R shortcut to open root file of a song! I use this function constantly as I am a television music supervisor who frequently emails or FTP sends music cues from composers and artists of mine to my tv shows. I use this to function to bring music cues into Toast, to see how I have files titled, etc. If anyone at Apple can log this as a potential fix for a future update, there is important functionality in this for some of us! Thank you.

I too use it all the time & I thought they just got rid of it; they probably changed it to make room for a new shortcut... odd that they just changed it all the sudden like that, without replacing it with something more often used. I can't get my macbook to access shared files on a windows computer when it's connected through a wireless access point.

I recently bought a Netgear Wireless Access Point to use in the office so we can have a wireless network. I configured the wireless network, and I am currently connected to the internet. However, I no longer can access the shared files on the Windows computers like I could when I was hardwired in with an ethernet cable. I've disabled all of the internal firewalls on all of the computers (and there's no firewall built into the WAP), all the computers are on the same workgroup, and I've tried accessing the computer with the shared files directly via the IP address using the instructions found here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8849.html.
My computer sees that the other computers on the network are there. They show up in the network view from the finder. However, when I try to connect to them, it tells me the connection failed. When I click connect as, it says:
"Connection Failed
"The server “PC-ASSISTANT” may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
When I try to connect via the "connect to server" on the finder, I type in "smb://10.0.0.103/Word Processing" It tells me:
"There was an error connecting to the server “10.0.0.103”. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again.
If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator."
I have no clue what the problem is. I'm not really an IT person or a networking guru. Can someone please help?

Shared File Missing from Time Capsule

This morning all of my shared files are missing. There used to be two folders in the time capsule file and now there is only one "DATA" which is where our workstation backups go. The other one was a Shared File where we put all of the files we shared across the network. The DATA file is there, but the Shared file is completely missing. I have tried searching the individual workstations and I cannot find it or anything that was within it. Any ideas how to find/restore it?

Very strange stuff happens.. let me tell you .. if you put a computer onto yosemite .. even one..even briefly.. like a laptop someone bought in and connected to the TC, it can do some very odd stuff to the network files.. permissions is a big big issue.
Time Machine cannot backup network drives.. so sharing files from the TC is always a very very bad idea. The TC is designed purely as a backup target for Time Machine. It should be used very carefully beyond its design parameters.. since it cannot back itself up either.
I still think the files are there.. unless it was deliberately deleted.
I don't think you will like my suggestions to get the files back though.
But here is an odd one.. get /borrow /lone a PC laptop running windows.. and load up the airport utility onto it. Then open the TC disk in windows explorer.. type the name directly into the address bar..
\\TCname.local or \\TCIPaddress (where you replace the TCname with actual NETWORK name (which is not its name as shown on the TC if it has spaces and illegal characters).. that is why using the actual IP is easier.. TCIPaddress replace with IPv4 address eg 10.0.1.1
Windows cannot read Mac permissions so tends to open everything. It cannot read it correctly all the file info sometimes but you will quickly see what is there and what is missing.
Another suggestion.
Full factory reset of the TC. No files on the hard disk are changed doing this.
Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Run through the airport utility and use all short names no spaces and pure alphanumerics. Passwords should also match that except longer.. 8-20 characters work well for both.
Now manually mount the disk in Finder.
Use Go, Connect to Server in Finder.. type in
AFP://TCname.loca or TCIPaddress (same as above definitions).
In the new clean mount of the TC disk see if you can locate the directory or folder with your missing files.
Otherwise if the files are important.. you must immediately stop using the TC.. remove its hard disk or get a store to swap disks for you .. and preserve the old one.. use a proper USB to SATA holder and plug it into your Mac and use a file recovery software like Data Rescue 3 to see if the files are deleted but available. I have had success using this method. Even just running disk utility to fix permissions can sometimes get the results you want.
If it is a fairly old TC.. with say a 1 or 2TB disk it is very easy to open the TC and change out the disk.. ask if you are prepared to go this path and we can give you more info.

Add 'soft link' of a shared file in the body of message.

I want to know if there is a way to hyperlink a shared file which is on a server and add it in the body of message rather than sending that whole file as an attachment. So that when the recipeint receives the e-mail, he/she can just click on the link and that particular file will open.
I hope my question is clear enough. I need your expert opinion in this matter. Is this do-able or am I crazy?

I have a webserver and folder named projects under webserver. I want to access a file from the projects folder. Hence my absolute file path looks something like this:
\\Web_Server\web_server\projects\bci.doc . How can I make this path as URL? I understand that if I have any internet website or any ip address, I can hyperlink it. But I am not sure, how can I hyperlink a file path such as this.
I have tried the following code in the javamail:

Cant install PSE 11 shared files issue?

Hi - I cant seem to install PSE 11 as I keep getting shared file issues. Ive managed to work my way into the manual error log and its saying this - Any ideas please? Please go slow I am so not technical at all!

So resolve this TIME consuming problem, i had another look at that support page and this is what i did to fix it Thank you for your help 99jon for the link.
Copied the elements folder to the root of the HD, then renamed the folder with the installer files contained within to c:\PSElements9Installer then ran the setup.exe as administrator and hey presto, it worked and fully completed the install grrrrr.

    Had the same problem with PSE10 Copying it to kthe root of c and renaming it to PSElements10Installer Worked perfectly.

My iOS customers cannot download the video clips I send via Adobe Send "Safari cannot download this type of file"

My customers who use iOS cannot download the video files I send by Adobe Send "Safari cannot download this type of file" is the report they get. I have tried created a zip file of the clip but get the same result. Please help

This error seems to point at a problem not directly related to the encoding. The message might be misleading but I read "Safari cannot download this type of file" as relating to the file type - the end of the name (perhaps MIME type setup, but let's start with the file type).
But... some web searching finds others say that iOS cannot download files AT ALL because it has no filing system you can access. Clearly (?) you just want it to show the movie, but I don't know any more than that.
Perhaps someone else has worked in this area. Also worth trying suitable iOS forum.

Sharing Files between Mac and PC over a Network

I have recently made the switch to the Mac, and I have been so pleased with it ever since! I am getting married soon and my wife-to-be has a Windows XP desktop machine. I have been reading up on the different options on sharing files, and I want to ask if someone with experience can confirm what I think I have discovered.
1. A person on Windows can read and/or write to a Mac OS X formatted drive only if they run Macdrive.
2. A person running Windows XP can read files stored on a shared folder on the Mac through network sharing without additional software. But can they write to the shared volume on the Mac??
Now, I know all about the Mac side of things. It can read NTFS, read/write to FAT/FAT32, connect to Windows computers...etc. I have actually done all these things already, and know how to use them. I just want to make sure that I have the right idea before I go into working in the other direction, from Windows to Mac.

You don't need Macdrive for sharing files over the network, macdrive is only needed for a PC to read a Mac formatted Hard drive that is directly connected to a PC i.e Firewire Drive.

Yes you can write to a windows sharepoint on a mac this would be limited to their home folder unless you setup other permissions.
To setup windows sharepoints your best using a shareware utility called sharepoints
Now, I know all about the Mac side of things. It can read NTFS, read/write to FAT/FAT32, connect to Windows computers...etc. I have actually done all these things already, and know how to use them. I just want to make sure that I have the right idea before I go into working in the other direction, from Windows to Mac.
It does not matter what format hte pc drives are if your sharing over a network you only need to know about formatted drives if they are directly connected to the computer i.e firewire, or usb drives.
