Sendmail SMTP problem...

Hi, i have Solaris 8 installed on Ultra 10... When i try to start sendmail service, in /var/adm/messages message appear that say: "Feb 9 14:06:21 consolasun sendmail[6028]: [ID 702911 mail.error] makeconnection: service "smtp" unknown"... And syslog can't send messages to outlook account...
anybody can help me ?... What should i do ?
Thanks...

I haven't seen that error before. You might want to check to see if you have the following entry in your /etc/system file though.
smtp 25/tcp mail

  • I cannot send mail from 1 of my iCloud accounts using mac mail- smtp problem

Slightly strange problem today with smtp server.  For some reason timing out on po4 on one of my accounts.  Another account uses po2 and is working fine.  If I log in to icloud I can send messages so problem appears to be in configuration of mac mail.  I have not changed anything, I can receive mail.  When trying to change smtp I cannot edit the smtp box or if i do it reverts to what it was previously.  Any suggestions ?

Whoops have jus seen this thread which looks like it is a more widespread problem than just me

  • SMTP problems with Apple Mail 6.2

Recently my Apple Mail 6.2 has become messed up. It tells me that all my accounts (a gmail, me.com & cloud) are all offline and can not be brought back on line. The Mail on my iPhone and iPad works fine with the exact same settings and exact same accouts that I have had for many months. Something has changed in Mac OS 8 Mountain Lion in release 6.2, IS THIS FIXED?

This is how to solve the problem:
    - Open Mail.
    - at top left, click Mail, then Preferences.
    - Choose the Accounts tab.
    - highlight your first mail account on left.
    - towards the bottom right, click the arrows on the right side of
'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)' and choose the
       ' 'Edit SMTP Server List'
    - When the next box opens, click the 'Advanced' tab in the middle right
       of that box.
    - choose 'Use custom port:' (2nd choice in middle) and put the
value 25 in the box on right (i.e. you are forcing Port 25,
        which is the standard port)
    - you should be able to 'OK' out of all the boxes, and the SMTP server
       should no longer say Offline.
In 2 out of about 20 Mac's I had to go back in and choose
Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) click OK,
then immediately go back and Uncheck the Use SSL box, and click OK again.
In both of those cases I also had to reboot / Restart.
It was probably the 'restart' that got the settings to take hold,
but since I tried checking SSL both times to force the change, I listed it here.
If I had to try with another system, I would skip the SSL step and just reboot.
    Port 25 is listed as one of the default ports in choice 1 on the last page;
but it seems like the latest release of Mail for both Lion and Mountain Lion
    never really checks port 25.
Like I said, I had to do this with EVERY Mail account after Mail updated to 6.3
in both Lion and Mountain Lion upgrades,
. . . and it worked for all of them.  Feel free to ask questions, I'll check back.

  • Snow Leopard MAIL SMTP problem...

    Hi,
I have a friend using Snow Leopard MAIL. And he reported to me that all of his outbound emails were (all of a sudden??) being bounced back from his ISP (Hargray.com)
I was able to determine that the problem lies in the SMTP protocol bering issued forth by his iMac/Mail.
Using WireShark I can see that the EHLO being sent out is similar to:
    EHLO ricks-printer-2/.001/
By comparison what comes out of my machine is:
    EHLO [192.168.0.111]
I have already modfied his HOSTNAME in the /etc/hostconfig file but his EHLO computer name persists!
I have NO IDEA where its getting this 'ricks-printer-2' from nor why the SMTP process attaches the even worse junk on then of that.
The ISP comes back with  "EHLO ricks-printer-2/.001/  Bad MIME TYPE"
    I've scoured the web for solutions and REALLY thought the fixing up his HOSTNAME would do the trick, but no joy. {It did make the COMPUTER NAME in a terminal session prompt come out correctly though....}
    Any ideas?
    thanks,
    tob

I'm having the exact same issue. I've spent hours rebuilding mailboxes, passwords, and keys. I can often go days before the mail will actually be seen in these offline boxes. Apple - we need this fixed!

  • Sendmail/Postfix problem

    Hi
We are having troubles sending email from Sendmail/Postfix on a new Mac Mini/10.5.2. The mail log continually shows "Operation timed out (port 25)" errors for every outbound mail. There is no firewall between the server and the Internet, so nothing should be blocking SMTP. We've tried sending both from php and directly from the command line. All mails get deferred with the same error.
    Any thoughts/help gladly appreciated.
    Cheers
    Rob

Hi, please disregard this. After a long discussion with my ISP they admitted that they were blocking port 25 (even though my service specifically doesn't have blocking!). Sigh

  • Gmail: 'Send Mail As' IMAP, SMTP problems

    Hello,
    Here's the background:
I have a work email address that's automatically forwarded to my gmail account. I have it setup through Gmail to use my works outgoing SMTP server so whenever I send an email through my Gmail account it appears to be coming from my work account. It works fine.
It does not work on the Iphone. I have tried setting up Gmail through exchange, through the normal Gmail setup and inputting manually through the IMAP setup. In all 3 occasions my Gmail email address appears on outbound email and not my work email.
My last effort was to input a new IMAP account into the Iphone using my works email address, Gmails incoming IMAP server and my works outgoing SMTP server. All with SSL and different usernames/passwords.
Theoretically it should've worked. And it did, sort of.
I was able to download the Inbox from Gmail with no problems. And, I was able to send email with the above configuration but the emails just vanished. The never reached their intended destination.
My works email is setup using Godaddy's server smtpout.secureserver.net. All usernames, passwords, ports etc... are correctly entered.
    Any suggestions?

thnx for replying but the problem is that it does not show the emailadress that i chose to send from. When i click on the full name in "Sent Mail" it shows my primary email.
I want to see the emailadress i chose so i can check if I emailed with the correct address.
Lets say my primary email is: [email protected] and my secondary [email protected]
When i use [email protected] to send from it wont show this address in "Sent", it shows "From: My name" when i click on my name it shows [email protected] and not [email protected]
It did send it from [email protected] tho because when i log-in in webmail with [email protected] i see the email in "Sent Mail". And the inbox i sent the email to does see the emailadress i chose and the full name i use in Mail.app.
Idk if its possible to change this?
else i just have to stay using webmail if i want to use an other email to mail from.

  • Barracuda spam filter not downloading mail to xserve - smtp problem?

    Hi-
We just had to upgrade from 10.3 to 10.5 last week (a nightmare that seems to be continuing). We seem to be up and running but there is a weeks accumulation of mail on our barracuda spam filter thzt is not coming through plus any new e-amil from outside the network. Mail seems to be working okay from within the doman. I did a serveradmin check on mail and it is running. In looking through other posts I tried to telnet into the smtp port. I get a timeout when I try to connect from another machine. When I try through localhost I get:
    sh-3.2# telnet localhost smtp
    Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused
    Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Can't assign requested address
    Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused
    Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Can't assign requested address
    Trying 127.0.0.1...
    Connected to localhost.
    Escape character is '^]'.
    220 xserve.testeq.com ESMTP Postfix
    quit
    221 2.0.0 Bye
The mail.log file does show that the Barracuda is connecting but possibly intermitently?
Of course there could be another problem involved but does anyone have an idea of what may be happening?
    Thanks,
    Alan Husby
    Test Equipment Corporation
Any ideas as to why this should be happening?

Okay - I found a problem with /private/anvil, added anvil line to master.cf and then ran the /etc/postfix/post-install script - Are there any other post install scripts that no one saw fit to put in the documentation that need to run?
I can now connect to the smtp port from another machine. I still get the above errors when I connect to localhost (but it does connect, I forgot to mention above). Still no sign of the weeks worth of mail backed up on the barracuda...

  • Outgoing smtp problem in Mail

My outgoing smtp server in Mail Account Information is shown as "offline" and I can't send emails.  Can anyone tell me how to solve this problem and what the smtp should read or be inserted as?  Thanks.

    EDIT SMTP SETTINGS
In Accounts window, select to Edit SMTP Server list...
Select account in the list.(It's not uncommon to find extra SMTP servers listed. When you remove account, Mail does not delete the smtp info. You might need to do some clean up in the list to remove the extras.)
Click on Advanced tab. Enter full email address and password
    Name. [email protected]
Add password if it is blank.
Apple defaults to the default ports (25,465, 587) but some servers prefer a custom port. Check to see what port they recommend. Gmail for example likes 465, Outlook.com 587. Verify if they require SSL.
Open Connection Doctor under Window in the Menu bar.
Do you see green light now for your account?

  • Sendmail SMTP server refusing connection or unavaible

    Greeting,
I am finally moving my mail server from a UltraSPARC 5/Solaris 9 to Sun Workstation 20/Solaris 10 R6
After much time and pain, I think I finally got the Mail Server(Sendmail/IMAP) up and running except when trying to send mail from another client using it as my mail server as a SMTP server, I get error msgs indicating that the server is refusing SMTP connections or un-availble
    More info::
    bash-3.00# svcs | grep -i sendmail
    online 12:47:51 svc:/network/smtp:sendmail
    bash-3.00# ps -ef | grep -i sendmail
    root 4567 2981 0 12:58:24 pts/2 0:00 grep -i sendmail
    smmsp 4556 738 0 12:47:52 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/sendmail -Ac -q15m
    bash-3.00#
    The questions are:
    1. How do I change the default parameters on starting sendmail
    2. Do I configure to allow the mail server to act once again as a SMTP server.
Will post info on sendmail.cf file if needed...
    thanks
    khat

You probably installed in secure by default mode. So sendmail is running in listen local_only mode.
    Try
    svccfg -s sendmail setprop config/local_only = false
    svccfg refresh sendmail
    svccfg restart sendmail

  • SMTP problem with 10.4.2

I am having trouble sending email via SMTP like several others I've seen posted in this forum. In my case
    1) This occurs from 2 different machines, both running Mac OS X 10.4.2, so I think the problem is generic to 10.4.2.
    2) I can telnet to port 25 on the server in question, so it's not a network or DNS problem.
    3) I can access other SMTP servers fine, so I don't think the problem is a general Mail bug, which would have generated 1000x more discussion traffic.
    4) I can even access the server is question when I'm inside the firewall at work, where authentication is not required.
This would seem to point the finger at the authentication mechanism between the Mac and specific SMTP server software. I've discussed this in detail with the helpdesk people at my work and we've found that according to the SMTP server logs, the connection fails because of a lack of TLS (SSL), even though that check box is selected on both of my Macs. I'm guessing there is a problem with the Mail SSL and this version of the server software. The SMTP server is running PMDF version 6.2-1 on Solaris 9.
I thought I'd post this as a separate thread to collect information on the SMTP server software where there are problems. If you are having SMTP server problems and can find out the version of SMTP software running, we may find the pattern.
    Raph

not sure if this is related, but mail 2.0.5 on OS10.4.3 doesn't let me change smtp servers consistently. often times, an smtp server that i have added in mail/preferences/accounts doesn't even show up as an option in the dropdown menu when a mail send fails. ever run into this?

  • IPlanet SMTP problem

Let me just preface my post with saying I inherited administration of this system and still have a lot to learn.
    Here is my problem.
-Webmail client gets SMTP Error when trying to send a message.
-when this happens, the server "./imsimta process" shows only the dispatcher and job_controller running at that time. No smtp_client, or tcp_smtp_server, or ims_master running.
    - Restarting the imsimta does not solve the problem.
    - the tcp_smtp_server.log shows the following error:
    tcp_smtp_server.log-0ITC00502OVRSN:[19/Jan/2006:09:35:53 -0800] wwcc [7516]: General Error: func=_configdrv_pset_fetch;error=could not access server's configura
tion in ldap: func=psetRealCreate; error=System (OS/LDAP) related error
According to the Sun forum, this is the error message reported when the IMS cannot connect to its CONFIG ldap server to gather configuration information - but I'm not sure if that error is at the root of my problem.
I can resolve issue by stopping mail services and running an ./imsimta recover-crash or dirsync -F , but those are short term fixes because the problem is back the next day.
    So my questions are....
    - How can I restart the smtp server using the ims command line? and will that fix anything?
    - how can I check the smtp/ldap config? using configutil I believe?
    Here's what I'm running:
    # ./imsimta version
iPlanet Messaging Server 5.1 Patch 1 (built Jun 6 2002)
    libimta.so 5.1 Patch 1 (built 06:07:28, Jun 6 2002)
    HP-UX wwcc B.11.00 A 9000/879 674411361 two-user license
Thank you in advance for any support you can offer.

problem. No, the real problem is that you are running a VERY OLD and End Of Support Life product. iMS 5.1 is long dead.
One of the problems it has is that the whole dirsync process is bad, and needs to be abandoned. There are indeed many bugs in it, and those bugs will never be addressed.

If you server is locked up because your dirsync (imtasync) process is hung, you need to address that.
    Here's a short-term fix:
    1. Stop the messaging Server.
    2. Confirm that ALL messaging Server processes are stopped. Use ps -ef to check that all processes that run from within the Messaging install directory are indeed gone. Especially, check for stored, imtasync, dirsync, job_controller, dispatcher, and the rest.
    3. Run:
    imsimta clean_db
    start-msg store
    imsimta recover-crash
    start-msg
then you really, truly need to upgrade your software. Your bits are 4 years old.
Messaging Server 5.2p2 is still supported. That's a pretty easy upgrade. After installation, you need to turn Direct LDAP on, to eliminate dirsync completely.
Messaging Server 6.2 is the current version. It's vastly better. I would go there.

  • One more SMTP problem.. :(

So this used to be a lot easier, but has gotten much harder to set up mail services, and get them to work. Not to mention that I'm in over my head..
So I can send mail thru the server from inside the office where the server is located, but not from outside... I suspect this has something to do with the entries for Mail Relay.. but... am not sure.
I have tried unchecking "Allow relay only thru...", and I even tried adding 0.0.0.0, but neither of those efforts succeeded....
Here is the postconf file..... what am I missing? Thanks WAY in advance for your help, support, and guidance.
    config_directory = /etc/postfix

  • 4710 outbound smtp problem

I have a new ACE 4710. I am unable to get the mail server to send mail through the ACE. I have even set the ACL to any any both inside and outside. The mail server worked fine when it was behind the ALTEON load balancer.
Don't know what I am missing any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It shouldn't be any problem.SMTP is nothing but a LAyer4 traffic on port 25.
Are you simply routing the SMTP traffic through the ACE or Loadbalancing the SMTP traffic?
Is the ACE in routed/bridged mode ?
what is the default gateway on SMTP server?

  • Help! Smtp problems, can't send email

    Hi,
Right I have been using Mail version 1.3.11 (v622/623)
for a long time and all of a sudden about 2 weeks ago it starts timing out when sending email. Restarting mail or the computer doesn't change it however it did work once randomly within this 2 weeks!
I have tried a few things like changing the port from 25 to 527 (or whatever it is, can't remember offhand) and even from a different computer. I have tried pinging the server smtp.mac.com from both computers with no luck also.
I haven't bothered with apples help yet as the last 2 questions I had took over 3 weeks to answer. So any help would be fantastic!
I'm using OS 10.3.9 on a 1.5Ghz powerbook, and the email account is a .mac one if that's any use.
    Thanks for any assistance...

OK. Finally solved the problem. It is not related to network. I have been having this problem with a number of people on different ISP's.
Here's the scoop. Several ISP's have stopped allowing anonymous relaying on their smtp servers in an effort to improve security. And without warning, a couple of them changed the authentication methods. Initally I dismissed the problem as an authentication problem because the apple mail program feedback says TIMEOUT, not rejected password or ID, which led me to beleive this was a network/port problem.
Some require just a user id, some require id with a password. So, like an idiot I just assumed that since I haven't changed any settings for authentication the answer was not there. But I was wrong. If you authenticate to the smtp server using your mail id and password (should be the same for incoming mail) you should be now able to send. Once I fixed this on all the computers, mail started going through without rejection.
Sometimes it takes a few tries for the mail to actually get accepted, but once you hear that lovely jet sound, you know you've got it.
I'll check back soon to answer any questions you may have.
I'm sorry it took so long to post a solution but other problems have taken precedence.
