September 2007 Screenshots

Guidelines
· DO NOT post full resolution screenshots!  You can use the "mogrify" command (pacman -S imagemagick) to make a thumbnail of your screenshot:
$ cp screenie.png thumb-screenie.png
$ mogrify -resize 20% thumb-screenie.png
Twenty percent of the original size is great for 1024x768 screenies.  You can then upload these images to your server and use the following code to show them on the forum:
http://my.site.com/thumb-screenie.png
This displays the thumbnail as a link to the screenie like this:
http://dtw.jiwe.org/share/screenies/thumb-screenie.png
· If you do not have your own upload space you can upload to http://art.archlinux.org and link your shot here (with text) for discussion
· Several websites also offer free image hosting, of these  ImageShack is very popular and does a neat auto thumbnail:
http://img247.echo.cx/img247/7290/20050 … 7fv.th.png
You should use the "Thumbnail for forums (1)" link code that is supplied to post here
· Once the new month begins please do not post new screenies in the old threads.
· If the screenshot has questionable material that might not be safe to view while at work or in a school setting, please post only a link and not a thumbnail, along with a mention of "Not Safe for Work". Posts that do not adhere to this are subject to deletion without notice at any time.
· Please try to include any links to your wallpaper or configs that you may have and/or the names of your icon theme, running apps, DE, etc. in the same post to reduce unnecessary clutter later.

• Can I add internal bluetooth, WiFi to September 2007 Mac Pro?

I have a Quad Core 2.66 GHz Mac Pro purchased in September 2007, and it didn't come with Bluetooth or WiFi built in. I would like to add both, but I would prefer not to use USB dongles. Aside from already having enough USB crap to plug in, I want my bluetooth and WiFi devices to be available while booting, especially bluetooth, as I want to get a Magic Mouse and a wireless Apple Keyboard.
I've tried searching the forums and Apple's online store, but I haven't found anything. I've been told that retail stores may be able to sell me a bluetooth module, but it's a PITA to install.
Can you folks offer any more advice? Can I look at something like a PCI card, or is it possible to get these parts from Apple and install them myself? I have AppleCare for another year or so, for what that's worth.
Thanks for any help.

Yes, you still can. However, if you are looking for the part to install yourself I don't believe its a user installable part. But here is what it looks like:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-Bluetooth-Card-Module-for-iMac-and-MacPro-A1115W0QQitemZ130313469943QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain0?hash=item1e5749bff7
Here is another: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=220498181165&Category=44999&_ trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D2
But, at this point, you can easily get a bluetooth 2.1 usb adapter and wouldn't have to pay Apple to install it. Only the 2008/2009 mac pros come with the bluetooth module already.

If you like the wallpaper, you can get it from http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a0049387/stuff/
The dock is engage with compositing enabled.
If you happen to use Archlinux PPC, you can get engage from this repo:
[e17]
Server = http://kth5.telekommunisten.net/testing/e17
(thanks kth5!)
otherwise you'll probably need to build it from the AUR.

• [ADOBE]  Resolving Windows Flash Player permission-related issues 9/2007

Printable, formatted versions of these steps, valid as of
9/15/2007 are available. I recommend printing them and following
along with the print version:
.doc:
http://www.supportflash.com/bent/flash_player_ocx_troubleshooting.doc
.pdf:
http://www.supportflash.com/bent/flash_player_ocx_troubleshooting.pdf
The issue is this: You have multiple accounts on your XP
machine. One account plays Flash no problem, the other doesn't,
although both are Administrator accounts. Or possibly you have only
one account, and that account fails to play any Flash content. In
any case if you have ANY odd trouble with the Flash Player ActiveX
control for Windows as of September 2007, these should be your
steps. And yes, you need to do both sets of steps, in order!
The cause: This is usually caused by either or BOTH of the
following problems:
1. Leftover locked bits of an old Flash Player installation
2. Registry permission errors (aka 'ACL's)
OK so what do you do about this?
ONE: Identify possibly leftover Flash player bits
a. Open C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash folder.
b. Download the latest FP uninstaller from
http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14157.
c. Run the uninstaller. If you get a notice saying you need
to reboot, then reboot.
d. Look at C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash folder.
e. Does any file ending in .ocx remain? (flash.ocx,
flasha.ocs, flash9d.ocx etc...)
e1. If no, then you don't usually have any leftover locked
bits.
You're done with this part of the problem, proceed to TWO.
e2. If yes, then that remaining .ocx file may be locked.
Right click it
and select properties and look at the version tab.
What is the version number?
f. Is the version number Flash Player 9.0.16.0 or earlier?
f1. Use the uninstaller instructions from this technote:
http://www.adobe.com/go/4da116d3
-- section "Flash Player 9.0.16.0 and earlier"
-- DO NOT re-register the uninstaller. ONLY do this
UninstFl.exe part.
Yes, you'll need to know how to use the command line to do
this. If you're not
comfortable with that then take your machine to someone who
is!
g. Is the version number Flash Player 9.0.28.0 or higher?
g1. Use the uninstaller instructions from this technote:
http://www.adobe.com/go/4da116d3
-- section "Flash Player 9 (9.0.28.0) and later"
-- DO NOT re-register the uninstaller. ONLY do this
UninstFl.exe part.
In both the D and E sections above you'll need to use the
specific name of the control that remains
in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash. So if you had a
stuck flash9b.ocx[DJM1] in the folder
and version was 9.0.28.0, your uninstall command would look
like this:
UninstFl.exe -u
c:\windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9b.ocx
That said, if you have trouble running these commands it
really is necessary to find someone who knows how
to use the command line, either a friend or a local
professional. Or spend some time learning about the
command line yourself.
h. RERUN the uninstaller you downloaded earlier. This should
get rid of the remaining (now unlocked) .ocx file and fix any
registry keys associated with it.
ALL of section "ONE: Identify possibly leftover Flash player
bits" is important. BUT this locked bit problem only happens on
maybe one out of 50 machines. So most people with installation
problems such as this are not going to have locked bits.
AND even after reinstalling you may still have continued
problems with Flash Player not being recognized.
Then we have to move on to section two..
TWO: Registry Permission Problems
We have been working on Flash Player failures caused by
Windows System Registry issues. We have not been able to determine
what’s causing these permissions to change. But that change
prevents the successful installation of Flash Player ActiveX
control (used by IE Windows).
Registry permission problems can be resolved using a tool
called SubInACL, built by Microsoft to correct system registry
issues.
Symptoms: What to look for:
1. If you install Flash Player on IE and are unable to see
Flash content on any webpage
2. After installation C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash
will have flash 9c.ocx in it but it failed to register
3. It appears that Flash Player installed correctly, but
unable to view Flash content
4. Flash Player works on other browsers, but NOT Internet
Explorer
5. If you are missing groups in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Advanced
Permissions
6. If you have run registry cleaners in the past, this may
have corrupted your system
Warning: The following solution involves the Windows System
Registry. Editing or manipulating the registry incorrectly can
result in serious system damage which may require re-installation
of the operating system. If you are not comfortable editing the
registry, then take your system to a professional. If you choose to
proceed, then it is essential that you create a complete system
backup and a Windows System Restore Point before proceeding. Adobe
Systems cannot be held responsible for damage resulting from this
information.
1. Select Start > Run
2. Type in “regedit”
3. Right click on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. Select Permissions
5. Select Advanced
For Vista
Compare your permissions with the ones in this screenshot.
http://www.supportflash.com/vista_key.png
For Window XP Pro or other flavors of XP
Compare your permissions with the ones in this document
“Troubleshooting system registry issues that prevent Flash
Player installation” (scroll down to the bottom of page).
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=kb400116
Notice any major differences, missing groups, incorrect
permissions?
How can you repair the System Registry, what's the fix
Download SubInACL from Microsoft to fix permission issues
that prevent the Flash Player Installation.
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=fb1634cb
NOTE: The Microsoft version of the .cmd script run by
SubInACL is not be run on any XP version other than Pro. HOWEVER,
the Adobe .cmd script in the above technote is tested safe for ALL
VERSIONS OF XP!!!
If you have a Windows System Registry permission issue that
sounds like the one described above, SubINACL may be the solution.
Please note that if you have this issue on multiple accounts on one
machine you’ll need to fix each account individually.

The issue is this: You have multiple accounts on your XP
machine. One account plays Flash no problem, the other doesn't,
although both are Administrator accounts. Or possibly you have only
one account, and that account fails to play any Flash content. In
any case if you have ANY odd trouble with the Flash Player ActiveX
control for Windows as of September 2007, these should be your
steps. And yes, you need to do both sets of steps, in order!
The cause: This is usually caused by either or BOTH of the
following problems:
1. Leftover locked bits of an old Flash Player installation
2. Registry permission errors (aka 'ACL's)
OK so what do you do about this?
ONE: Identify possibly leftover Flash player bits
a. Open C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash folder.
b. Download the latest FP uninstaller from
http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14157.
c. Run the uninstaller. If you get a notice saying you need
to reboot, then reboot.
d. Look at C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash folder.
e. Does any file ending in .ocx remain? (flash.ocx,
flasha.ocs, flash9d.ocx etc...)
e1. If no, then you don't usually have any leftover locked
bits.
You're done with this part of the problem, proceed to TWO.
e2. If yes, then that remaining .ocx file may be locked.
Right click it
and select properties and look at the version tab.
What is the version number?
f. Is the version number Flash Player 9.0.16.0 or earlier?
f1. Use the uninstaller instructions from this technote:
http://www.adobe.com/go/4da116d3
-- section "Flash Player 9.0.16.0 and earlier"
-- DO NOT re-register the uninstaller. ONLY do this
UninstFl.exe part.
Yes, you'll need to know how to use the command line to do
this. If you're not
comfortable with that then take your machine to someone who
is!
g. Is the version number Flash Player 9.0.28.0 or higher?
g1. Use the uninstaller instructions from this technote:
http://www.adobe.com/go/4da116d3
-- section "Flash Player 9 (9.0.28.0) and later"
-- DO NOT re-register the uninstaller. ONLY do this
UninstFl.exe part.
In both the D and E sections above you'll need to use the
specific name of the control that remains

• Hard drive upgrade for Mac Book Pro from 11/2007 with 120GB

Hello
My hard drive is full after 2 years. I contacted an apple reseller as Apple store would not advise on it, and they told me that to avoid overheating, I should not exceed 160 GB for a new hard drive. I was surprised as a 250 GB hard rive was optional when I bought my MBP. I was more looking at 500 GB but I am worried about overheating as my laptop tends to heat up a lot with the current drive already.
How big a hard drive can my MBP accommodate (I understand 500 GB)? Will it create more heat which can not be dissipated by the MBP as Apple reseller told? Does 5400 or 7200 rpm change the heat levels (I understand not necessarily)?
Thanks for your answers, may help me avoid buying a new laptop.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I have the 17" MBP from September 2007, and I ordered mine with the optional 250 GB drive, which is a Fujitsu 4200 RPM model. My Mac runs perfectly well on this drive, and it never gets hot.
Since so many people have successfully put 500 GB drives in their Macs, I think the Apple reseller is misinformed. There may be a decrease in battery life for the 7200 RPM models, but I have read many posts where people report that the drives work perfectly well and that there was no heat problem.
I replaced the 30 GB drive in my iBook with a Western Digital 120 GB drive, and have had no issues with it. The drive does make a slightly different and louder whirring noise if you listen carefully. My only regret is that I did not install a 250 GB drive instead of the 120 GB.
Western Digital and Seagate both make 500 GB drives that should work perfectly well in your machine. Some people have reported problems with the 640 GB Western Digital spinning up and down too much, so you may want to avoid that one. If you go with the 500 GB Seagate, be sure to select one without the G-Force feature, as it is a built in type of sudden motion sensor which can conflict with Apple's built in Sudden Motion Sensor.
Good luck!

• New airport extreme card in 2007 mac pro?

I have a 2.66 mac pro which i purchased in september 2007. I talked to one lady at the mac store in Roseville, MN and she said I needed the old airport card, which she told me is model # MA688Z/A. is this true? or can i use the newer airport extreme card? the old card is hard to find and if i can use the newer card, model # M8881LL/A, that would make my life so much easier. Please advise.

I've talked to a few more people from different mac stores, and they said that the first person i talked to basically didn't know what they were talking about. they said that the new mac pro and old mac pro both take the same airport card, model MB363Z/A. sorry for all the run-around. can anybody confirm or dis-confirm this info?
