Sequence Settings FCP to Color and back again

Sorry in advance if i missed the answer to this when previously searching the forum.
Ok, I have a sequence in FCP. I duplicate it removing any problematic effects and place it all on one time line. I send the sequence to Color. In the settings I notice that the quick time settings are a different ratio to my fcp settings. I change them to 1440 x 1080 (same as FCP). When I send the rendered graded sequence back to FCP the sequence changes to a different frame size?
I can go into sequence settings in FCP and change them but is there a way of keeping the same aspect ratio / pixel ratio and dimensions between the 2 applications.
It feels like I have missed a step when setting the applications up but I can't find where.
Any help will be much appreciated

Since you are working w/an interlaced format you should be aware of a couple of bugs in Color that will cause the program to mess up your field order. The first bug is using certain nodes in the Color FX room and the second bug is caused by resizing/reframing in the Geometry room (this includes resizes that are done in FCP as that information is carried over into Color). Even if you resize something in Color and then hit the "reset" button the bug will still happen because Color still thinks you resized the image (the border of the frame in the Geometry room will be red instead of white).

I've never experienced the horrific problems some folk have claimed but then I never put compound clips within compound clips.
In fact, until today I had never made a compound clip!

We can not see your computer, your settings or even know what your source files are because we are not in the same room as you are!
We cant see what you are doing wrong ...so you will have to tell us a lot more and show us some screen grabs of your settings.

Help! Audio for 16mm project, material to FCP and back again to 16mm

I am getting ready to send an AIFF file of the audio I created on FCP, working with video that was created from a 16mm to video transfer at my lab. They tell me the transfer was a non-drop frame transfer. The lab made a digital file from the transfer, which I imported into a FCP project with 23.98 sequence settings.
I want to compare the frame length of my WP to that of my video file so that I can determine how the audio house who will be transferring the AIFF to mag needs to compensate, and I am confused about how to measure the video file's frame length. If the sequence settings are at 23.98 fps, and the project runs from 1:00:05;12 to 1:11:49;08, to determine the frame length should I be assuming there are 24 frames per second or 30?
I don't have access anymore to the FCP so I can't check but a basic question is: if the sequence setting are set to 23.98fps, does that mean the timeline only has 24fps? When I convert at 30fps, my video file is 22 frames longer than my WP...

When your project and sequence settings are at 23.98, it is for two main reasons. 1. ou are working with video footage shot at 23.98 and 2. you are working with film (24 fps), which was ultimately telecined to video which runs at 23.98. This is mainly implimented because you plan on either going back to a higher resolution "online" which you will be synching up the timecode with a better quality copy of the tape at a coloring house, or you will be using the edl from the 23.98 sequence to give to a negative cutter, so they can cut the negative correctly according to the timecode and how it links with the keycode.
I assume you are making a final product that will be on celuloid- an actual film print, not a video copy. is this correct?
Please clarify the following: did you shoot on film, get a telecine to a beta or dvcam, do you have a timecode burn-in on the tape and when you captured the clips into final cut, did you utilize Cinema Tools?
If you did run your clips through cinema tools, did you do it correctly (starting the process on the "aa" frame).
Is your project set to 23.98 or just your sequence? when you place captured clips onto the timeline do they have to be rendered? Is this a sync project or was it shot MOS?
And lastly, as I previously asked, are you sending all of your negative, the edl from FCP and the aiff to a negative cutter?

HIghest quality DV settings export to desktop and back to FCP?

Please forgive me! have looked everywhere but not sure if i'm looking in the right place- I'm new to video and FCP7, (FCstudio v 3) and having trouble finding info on this subject of export quality:
I have a 10 min vid imported at DV PAL 48khz/ PAL Firewire Basic settings. It was filmed w a Canon XM2 camera ('625lines/50fields' at resolution 720x576 miniDV) turned 90degrees to fit me in lengthwise, so i have dropped it into the viewer, set in/out points and corrected the 90degree turn+centered/cropped it accordingly in the 'motion' tab, and dropped it into the 'insert' yellow tab in the canvas, so now it's in the timeline and +plays the right way up etc+ when i move the playhead around.
There was no red line - just green, but pressed 'cmd R' anyway and something flashed across for a millisecond.
BUT i can't do anything with it as every time i try and drag or correct/edit the ends of the clip/s to edit it, looks all on its side again in the viewer/canvas which is really hard to work with! So i figured i'd mix it down to my movies folder/scratch disk as an independent movie and then re-import it again, ready to edit and chop up etc.
Does anyone know the BEST quality thingy in the 'export' quicktime conversion or quicktime movie drop down lists i should use to make it solid and rendered the right way up etc so i can re-import it in from my movies folder or desktop without doing any 'compression' or fancy things. (i got stuck a while back in imovie when i exported something as 'Full DV' quality which apparently wasn't as high quality as 'DV streaming' i found out later, so i'm a bit worried about getting it wrong again here. It needs to stay as hi res as poss as i need it for projection not just internet or smaller view.)
It has black stripes down the side, like a vertical letterbox but it suits the style of the film anyway so that's ok, but still i would love to know about the best way to keep it good and not have it go all jaggedy or pixely.

My workflow is usually as follows: Edit video in FCP-->Export Quicktime with original sequence settings-->Bring into AE to do effects-->Export from AE with same compression as original FCP sequence settings-->Bring back into FCP to add chapter markers-->Export through Compressor to m2v. Before I export to m2v, everything I'm working with is HDV 1080i60.
For some reason FCP doesn't like the AE export.
What's also weird is that AE messes up the pixel ratio. When I play the FCP export in QT it looks perfect. When I play the AE export in QT it looks squished.

Sequence settings FCP

What would be the best sequence settings in FCP for footage shot at 720 60fps and 1080 60fps.
I have mixed footage, shot with 2 different cameras and settings..i usually use DV NTSC but I am using a Panasonic GH2 and imported the footage using iMovis and a panasonic HVX 200. I chose Apple intermediate Codec in my settings.
I am able I belleive and on testing this seems to work, 720 and 1080 footage...also I was testing using 1080 24 fps and that also is able to run in my sequence...will I have any problems when I output to DVD.

sAs i was testing a new camera and was not sure of my settings I have screwed it up regarding all footage matching, BUT image looks stunnng and I would like to be able to use all I shot, so any advise about seq. settings and overall info on mixing different image quality...a 24fps clip runs in a 60 fps seq, which i thought couldn't happen??
I'm just learning all this so need straitening out....on the settings for sequences mostly and the odd codec.

Why did you use iMovie to import? The Panny GH2 and HVX work just fine with FCP.
What you would typically do with mixed format footage is convert everything to a common format beforehand using Compressor - i.e. convert whatever you have less of to what you have most of. Although in this case you have to consider that it's easier on the eye reducing the 1080 to 720 than blowing up the 720. And of course the delivery format has to considered too.
In any case, ProRes LT would be the ideal editing editing format. You then tell FCP to match the Sequence settings to the source footage.

How to convert apple tv's hdmi output to cat6 and back again

I have just reovated my room and have wired in 2 x cat 6 cables from the place which i have my apple tv set up to a projector on my wall. I want to know which converter would be best and usuable to convert the hdmi output on apple tv to cat6 and then back again to hdmi to connect to my projector?
I have already bough some relitivly cheep hdmi to cat6 sender and recervers from ebay however i can only get sound to work (i.e. i can hear the sound when i press the apple tv remote) but there is no image. the projector i am usuing is a acer but will be changing this in a few weeks

Logic 8 - Pro Tools - and back again... suggestions?

I have the opportunity to add real drums, recorded at a really nice, professional studio, to my songs. I have a modest home studio centered around Logic and live drums just aren’t a reality for me at home.
This studio only runs PT. In the past I’ve moved from format to format by bouncing all the audio tracks from bar one / beat one (because I’ve never been able to just import the raw audio files into the new app and have them line up) to new audio files and importing them into the new project. This can be very time consuming, so here’s my question:
Is there any faster / better way to get from platform to platform? It seems this "OMF" thingy might be of some help but I've never used it before and I know very little about the way PT works. I know that I can just mute the sequenced drums I already have and bounce a stereo mix for the drummer to play to in the PT session. It’s getting all those track of drums out of PT and back into Logic at home that I’m wondering about.
Thoughts? Musings?? Anecdotes? All help is appreciated, and thanks a lot!!!

To expand on David's excellent advice...
Bounce a stereo track from within Logic, that your drummer will play to. Just make sure the bounce starts at bar 1, beat 1, as indicated in the locator boxes from the bounce window.
Note the tempo of your song.
In a new Pro Tools session, set the tempo the same, and import the stereo track you bounced from Logic. Make sure it is placed at bar 1, beat 1. (I believe it imports to this location by default).
Record your drums.
When finished, consolidate the files (option/shift/3 in PT). These will create contigous audio files that start from bar 1, beat 1. Just make sure you select ALL the drum tracks, and that the start point in PT's locator window is at bar 1, beat 1.
You may also need to Export the drum tracks, if they were recorded to the studio's HD. After consolidating, hit command/shift/K. This will bring up a navigational box, asking you where you want these newly consolidated audio files to go. Select your external drive.
When you get back to Logic, simply import all the drum tracks. If you took several takes, utilizing PT's playlists, you'll notice that PT puts a 1 after the names of the second playlist, a 2 after the third playlist, etc...
So you'll have sometng like Kick (take 1), Kick.1 (take 2) Kick.2 (take 2), etc...
You can then import all these audio files into Logic, placing them at bar 1, beat 1.
If you want to sift through the seperate drum takes, put each take into a folder. Do a search here, as that method of comping drums from wihin Logic has been discussed in deatail many times here.

Final Cut Pro sound export for mastering.....sync problem

I'm editing a 30 minute film and I have done most of the sound edit in FCP and Soundtrack pro and I want to now bring all the sound into pro tools to master the sound but every time i export sound into pro tools it seems to stretch by two or three seconds.
I have tried OMF, AIFF, XML, and Quicktime audio file sut to no avail!!!!
There are 50 tracks in the file so it is quiet large. It's not that there are handles of the file also as when I sync the file with the audio track with the video it syncs in one place but it is still out of sync in another.........It's as if the audio has been stretched!?!
If anyone has any advice it'd be much appreciated

Check the timecode rate and sync options in Protools. It sounds like a timecode or samplerate mismatch.
Especially note that 23.976fps OMFs from FCP (probably STP as well) show up in Protools as 24fps sessions. Change the PTs timecode to 23.976 to realign.

Footage from FCP into AE then back again...something's afoot

Hey all,
I have a 5 second clip that needs the attention of After Effects. A small area of my footage needs a paint job, and I've successfully brought the small area of my timeline out of FCP and have started a new composition in After Effects.
I've done the paint job and mission accomplished.
The problem:
I can't get the footage back into Final Cut with the correct aspect ratio. The footage is, in FCP, HDV footage, 1440 x 1080 at 16:9 PAR. It looks great in After Effects, as AE is sizing the movie correctly. But my understanding is that I need to set my composition PAR settings to 1.33 aspect ratio in order to maintain the correct proportion. The PAR dropdown in Composition settings does not give this option. I've also tried 1920 x 1080 with Square Pixels and that doesn't work either.
Can anyone advise me on how I get footage back out of AE without changing the PAR, or perhaps allowing me to choose 1.33 in my Composition settings?

IMovie 4 to iMovie HD and back again

I have read countless threads on issues related to choppy video in iMovieHD, but I haven't yet discovered a solution to my situation. I'm also dizzy with all the options, iMovie 4 vs iMovie HD, QT 7 vs QT 6.5.2, QT Cache Size, etc...
In years past, I have used iMovie 4 successfully on a number of big projects. These movies were usually from 60 to 90 minutes, with tons of video clips, audio clips, stills, transitions and effects. I never had a problem. This is work repeating. I never had a problem.
Then enter stage iMovie HD, and Quicktime 7. Neither seemed to have new features that I needed, but I figured, what the heck, maybe it improves performance. This is where my nightmare begins. I honestly do not know which software it the culprit, but I was in the middle of one of the most important video projects yet (and one of the biggest). Perhaps I deserve my fate since I didn't save the iMovie 4 project file, but I'm hoping some of you will be forgiving. Yes, I converted my iMovie 4 project to iMovie HD, and did not save the old project file. I didn't notice (or don't remember noticing) at first, so maybe the problem didn't start until I upgraded to QT 7. But at some point in time, I noticed a big problem in my project. I would start playing the movie to see how things were coming together, and my video would just freeze at arbitrary points (after a minute or so of playing okay). It starts getting choppy first, then the frame just freezes. The playhead continues to movie, and choppy audio is heard, but the video just seems to die.
I wiped the drive, and reinstalled iLife 04. I'm running OS X 10.3.9, and software update updated me to Quicktime 7 again. So I have a number of questions, all hopefully leading to resolution of this issue. I've lost weeks of time on this project, and I need to get it back on track.
1. I have the iMovie HD project, but I want to work on it in iMovie 4 instead (had better luck with iMovie 4). Is there any way to mod the iMovie HD project file, or any utility, so that I can open it with iMovie 4 (and have all my clips and transitions, etc., restored)?
2. Was downgrading from iMovie HD to iMovie 4 the wrong solution completely? Is the culprit really Quicktime 7?
3. Does the latest Quicktime resolve this issue? I'm trying to decide whether I should upgrade to iMovie HD again. I really don't know what to do at this point. There's so much at stake, but lately my productivity has been zero, so something has to happen.
I guess I'm looking for a direction to go, and I currently feel very lost. Reading the past threads made me dizzy. I just want things to be the way they were: working. Can someone push me in the right direction?

Now I know how you equated donmerlin with Bill... I got so flustered with this problem, I ended up forgetting which Apple ID I posted under. Here is an update to the problem.
I really wanted to stay with QT 7.0.3 because the latest DVD Studio Pro requires it (as does iTunes for video playing). I tried to stay with QT 7 and revert back to iMovie 4, but because the old iMovie 4 project file was converted to iMovie HD (and there's not way to go back), I basically had to recreate the iMovie project from scratch. I started to do this, by first creating a new iMovie 4 project, then copying all of the 100's of media files from the other project into this one. Once I realized the magnitude of work involved, figuring out what's what, and which clips are transitions and effects, I knew this was a bad way to go. And chances are, it would have still been a problem, since most of what I've read has to do with QT 7 being the problem. So I changed directions.
I am fortunate enough to have two G4's, so I left QT 7.0.3 on this one, and decided to downgrade QT on my other G4. First I ran the QT 7.0.1 Reinstaller (had to use Pacifist, since the Apple installer refused to let it run). Then I ran the QT 6.5.2 Reinstaller. After that, I opened up the iMovie HD project, and lo and behold, the freezing and staggering playback issues were gone! Words cannot express the feeling of relief I had. In retrospect, I am still quite disappointed that Apple introduced an upgrade to QT that caused this horrible problem, and appears to have done nothing to resolve it. The good news is that I found my way around the problem via the QT downgrade path, and I'll never upgrade QT on this other G4 again. Thanks to everyone in sharing in my grief and posting suggestions (both in response to my post and others).
