Serious trouble with new iPod - maybe you can help?

Please help if you can. 15 hours into troubleshooting this and I am desperate!!!
I just purchased a new 5th-gen, 60GB ipod. I already have a 1st gen, 10GB iPod. My old iPod is presently working great with no problems.
The new iPod, however, is not being recognized by my computer or by iTunes. And when I try to plug it in, iTunes freaks. It will stop playing music and freeze on me.
Here is what happened:
1. I knew I had the latest iTunes & iPod software on my computer, so rather than running the CD that came with the iPod, I just plugged in the iPod.
2. When I did so, the computer recognized it as a new device and attempted to (I assume - not sure) install a driver for a while. This went on for about an hour, something seemed wrong, so I disconnected the iPod.
3. At this point, connecting it always has the same behavior. It flashes "don't disconnect". ITunes freezes. Windows Explorer does not recognize or acknowledge its existence.
Here is what I have tried to do:
1. I first tried installing from the CD. This installed an older version of iTunes on my computer. This did not help matters and stopped my current iPod from working.
2. I troubleshooted this and managed to fix my old iPod by uninstalled all iTunes and iPod versions from my computer and reinstalling all of the latest bits.
3. I have doublechecked my USB ports to ensure they are USB 2.0.
4. I have tried restarting my iPod in file mode to see if the computer will recognize it then. No dice.
5. I have tried an iPod reboot, obviously.
6. I have restarted my computer innumerable times.
My gut says this is a driver issue, but I'm not remotely qualified to troubleshoot that. Can anyone help?

Hey, I've got a few questions for you. 1. What kind of computer are you using? (ie: laptop, desktop, whatever else there is..) 2. Have you ever had the 5th Gen. working on you're computer? 3. Have you tried you're 5th Gen. on another computer which, in the past, has detected an iPod?
Done with questions for now I believe. Here's my story. My girlfriend got her iPod (5th Gen.) in April and right when she got it, she hurried over to my house because she's "technologically incompetant". Booted up my Alienware (now an artifact after being purchased new around 1998-2000) and installed all the gadgets just like the instructions said. After finishing all that, I slapped the iPod into a USB2.0 port and WindowsXP detected, found, and installed the driver for the iPod. I used iTunes to put about 500MB's of songs on there then sent her off with her new WORKING (at the moment) iPod. A few weeks later, I guess when she killed the battery, she tells me that her iPod isnt working.
Long story short...
She's using a brand new Dell Inspiron [some number and letters here] laptop computer with WindowsXP.
I did everything exactly as you had described in your first post. Few things are different, her computer has never detected the iPod, WindowsXP never found or installed a driver. When her iPod is plugged into her computer, the iPod either brings up a little battry with a lightening bolt (like it's charging) or brings up the "Do Not Disconnect" screen. After a few hours of leaving it like that and I unplug the iPod, it hastn't gained any charge. I checked to make sure everything, ie: plug and play, were all working correctly and all that good stuff; however, one thing phases me. I took her iPod back to my house and tried it on the computer that had the player working before. After a minute of plugging it in, it was detected and I could add or remove songs using iTunes, in other words: IT WAS WORKING.
I would like to see some kind of solution to our problem (which I believe to be the same) so that I don't have to drive an hour away to the only iPod (Mac) store around to replace it (luckily it is still on the warranty).
If you make any progress, please let me know.

    I don't know about the systems, but is your phone on wireless and your other device on wireless?  Then I think they would mutually update.
    Howerver the previous response from ckuan sounds much more informed so I would check that out.

  • My HTC Droid Eris rant, maybe you can help, maybe someone with some power will read

    Alright I've got a new HTC Droid on the way, for the next 2 days I have a phone I can use the internet and check my email on, but the most basic cell phone functions I can no longer use, send/receive both calls and messages. 
    I'll get into the problems that lead me to do a hard reset on my phone today later, we'll start there. 
    So I've read about doing a hard reset and how it fixes a lot of problems.  So I prepared today not knowing what would happen really.  Backed up my photos and contacts and had at it.  Turns out I didn't need to back those up.
    So everything goes alright, it calls Verizon to activate my phone, says everything went fine.  No calls or text messaging.  But I've got internet and gmail. I get an error message when trying to send texts, and I get a verizon recording saying "We can't authenticate your phone."
    Take it in to the Verizon store, they can't figure it out either, so they order me a new phone. 
    The greeter gal was the most helpful really, she asked me if I did a *228, I didn't know what it was cause the phone called to activate by itself.  So later I tried that wondering if it was something different.  I tried the second option activating roaming.  Didn't work.
    So right now as I'm typing this I got the battery out, we'll see if that works.
    Alright here's my laundry list of complaints:
    It's slow, even for the most basic things like making a call or text messaging.  I understand it's not a very fast processor compared to other phones but for basic things it shouldn't struggle.  Hell even the calculator lags. 
    The messaging program sucks.  Well since the update I see they finally made it so it can play animated gifs.  But where to begin with this,  well first you can't delete messages.  It locks up.  Second if you don't want to delete a whole thread, you can't go through and select all the ones you want to delete, and mass delete, no you have to hold down everyone you want to delete, till the screen pops up, click delete, wait, and go to the next one. 
    If that wasn't time consuming enough, wait till you get a picture message with multiple attachments.   No it can't play it like regular phones, this is a droid dammit!  We have to be innovative and make it so you click on the attachments button, and it brings up a screen that lists all the attachments!  Then when you find the one you want, you can't simply just click it to view it, no we give you another pop up that gives you options, to view, or save the attachment!  I mean regular phones you could save the attachments while you're viewing them, but droid gives you options before hand, then after all the lag to load and exit the attachment, you get to start all over to look at the next one! (Handcent fixed a lot of the problems I had with the messaging but it loses multiple attachments so I end up going back to regular messaging to look at them)
    Gmail on your phone!  Only thing that sucks about this is google saves every person you have correspondence with through gmail as a friggin contact.  At least I can delete them off my phone, time consuming and annoying, I still haven't figured out how to delete them off actual gmail. 
    Facebook!  Hey if google contacts wasn't bad enough, in this connected day and age, when you type in a name to call or send a text message to, it searches facebook friends too!  And its really fun when your friends have old numbers listed on their facebook account and you call it and it's some 80 year old guy named herbert who says he'll dress in pig tails and be Jessica if I want. 
    I use Gmail, I use Facebook, but I do not need these to be a part of my contacts for my calling and texting in any way!
    The silent phone issues.  Mine has gotten worse lately. 
    The one thing I didn't mind, the browser, well attention is in the details, and they made one thing super annoying now.  I liked browsing craigslist on my phone, most browsers for computers, you click the back button, it returns you to the point in the page you were at, oh no, not droid, it takes you to some point in the page it feels like going back to when you click back.  Which is annoying when you're zoomed in trying to go down a list.  Either fix this or make it so you can just open links in new tabs. 
    I've been searching online for solutions to these problems if you got any please fill me in.  And before I send this, I put the battery back in, booted it up, still not able to make calls or send messages. 

    Firstly, your device authentication issue has absolutely nothing to do with your device. Even a Knack can get that error. In a nutshell, your device authenitication needs to be updated and a quick call to tech support can fix that. It takes 35 seconds to resolve that issue once you get through.
    Second, need some tissues? The Eris is an entry level phone. Don't like the included messaging app? Download Handcent. Or Chomp. You are really being overly whiney and will probably not be happy with another Droid device either. All devices need some set up, optimization, and guess what, basic user knowledge. Sounds like you never even bothered to crack the manual or seek out help.
    And yes, I do own an Eris.

  • Having trouble with NEW IPod

    I just bought a new IPod and Windows will not reconize it and I am having trouble installing the software that came with it.
    Windows brings up a warning screen about the software is not digitally something or another.
    I tried the newest updater and it also can not install and I get the same warning screen.
    Anti-virus is turn off also!
    My IPod is a fifth generation 30GB.(MA146ll/A)
    My windows is xp home with service 2 on it.
    Any ideas that can resolve this?

    Just purchased a new ipod Nano but the music wont load fron my computer- Mac OS 10.6.8. The itunes version is the latest- 11.1.3 (8). Under devices the 'syn' option can't be selected and only 'Transfer purchases from ipod' The ipod shows up in itunes and my desktop. What to do?

  • Trouble with new IPOD

    we just got a new ipod and cant get it to do anything. in fact, all we have ever seen on the screen is "do not disconnect". the only message we can get thru Itunes is "ipod cannot be updated. the disk could not be read from or written to." can anyone help?

    Are you sure that you're iPod is windows formatted. It may be mac formatted from the time you bought it. Usually when you first plug it in it's supposed to format the drive accordingly to what OS you use.

    I just replaced my old iPod shuffle with a brand new iPod Shuffle.   When I try to sync with iTunes it says I need to upgrade to iTunes 10.0 or later but when I try to upgrade iTunes it tells me I need Mac OS X 10.5 or later. I just want my iPod to work... Any ideas?

    What OS X is your mac running? whether this has an affect.. Mac OS X version 10.5.8 is the operating system needed to run iTunes 10.6.

    here's the story: i just got a new ipod (the 30 GB with video). i got tired of my little shuffle with no screen.
    so, i put my whole itunes library onto the ipod and everything was working fine. i loved it. then, i deleted some items from my itunes library on my laptop because it was taking up needed space on my hard drive, i figured this was fine, since i still have it on my ipod, and i can watch/listen to them anytime i want. But, when i went back later to put some new stuff on my ipod, 2 shows and 2 of my favorite podcast episodes were deleted from the ipod that i had put on before!
    -i checked the manual, it said that i need to be in the manual mode instead of itunes/ipod automatically updating the ipod's library. i was transferring stuff manually, but it still got rid of some stuff on it's own.
    the music was all still there, but a tv show episode, and 2 of my favorite video podcast episodes were deleted.
    -Will this always be a problem everytime I hook it up to my laptop and want to add new stuff to my ipod? I don't even have half of the ipod filled. it says that I have 20Gb of free space.
    i want to be able to keep stuff on my ipod that i will delete from my itunes library/hard drive. such as movies, tv shows, my favorite video podcast episodes. But at the same time, I want to be able to add new stuff. Is this Possible?? please help! is the ipod/itunes programmed to delete everything from the ipod that is not in the itunes library????

  • I can't email apple on this, but maybe you can help, compressor wont start

    This is a long letter I composed to send to apple about my compressor problems. I am having issues here in this paper, file:///Users/nelsonmay/Desktop/Compressor:%20Troubleshooting%20basics.webarchiv e but I have files missing even after 3 installs. Compressor works fine under another user name and I was told to migrate everything over to that new account, but the tech on apple phone support didnt' want to tell me how. I still have about 40 days of phone support on this software FCP6, but didn't get much on the phone. If you have the time to read though this and can help me with either getting compressor to install on my current user account or help me migrate over to my new one, I can go on and start working with this G5 again. If anyone can forward this onto apple, I would appreciate it.
    Here is my initial problem and why I called tech support.
    compressor would start, and I had the toolbar, but I couldn’t start a batch or open a file. When I tried to close compressor it said files were in the queue.
    I am writing with a real problem with my compressor software. I called tech support 4/7/09 and didn’t get a lot of help. I was essentially told to create another account on my mac to see if compressor was on the other account. I was also told to migrate over to that other account.     He also said that I could just reinstall compressor and everything would be OK. I logged to the new account I created on while on the phone and got compressor to start. I thought I was good, and since I didn’t feel I was getting support ( I asked to be walked through the process) I hope compressor would run. Later I tried to run a file on compressor – the new account I created, and go an error. I thought the next step was to go though the paper and reinstall compressor.
    First I made sure the permissions were correct. Then I removed the user preferences, but I did not find this file com.apple.compressor.Compressor.plist. I decided to proceed thinking I may be able to get a clean install. The following files were missing and still are.

Now when I logged out and logged on to the new account the tech had me create, compressor worked fine this time…under a different user account.
    So this is what I need from you guys. I have been scouring the apple help and support pages asking for someone to help me migrate all my data and preferences from my user account to the one the tech had me create. I can’t find a thing on it and no one is answering my questions. I feel that isn’t possible.
    Now I can go on, but this isn’t a very good option. I can save files from Motion, FCP etc, log out and log onto my new user account to use compressor. I would rather not do that. I like to export to compressor and make multiple files for different .

    1. I need to fix compressor under my user account that I have had for 4 years on this G5
    2. I need to be able to migrate to the new account I created and be able to have all my permissions as well as access to all data and other computers on my network. I also need to be able to log into this account on start up.

    Usually they are good about support when you are under warranty. I have some time left on this software. I was just really surprised to get pushed to a white paper so fast and told, "to fix it myself". I have to give the guy credit, he did help me make another user account, but he just told me to migrate my data, and didn't tell me how when I said that I wasnt' sure how to do it.
    FCP, is the problem on my system, not OSX. OSX didn't cause the issues in the first place. I also tried the compressor repair on numerous occasions and it didn't work. i am missing files on the install.....after three installs, I would think they would be there. That machine runs fine. Runs AE CS3, DVD Studio and HD on FCP without a hitch. Compressor is messing things up!

    Hello pboateng and welcome to the Palm forums.
     The applications and the databases in the LifeDrive and the m505 are different and, incompatible with each other.  I would export your Contacts using Palm Desktop, creating a new HoSync ID, and then importing the data into the new HS name.  When you HotSync the m505, sync it with the new ID.
     You may also need to install Palm Desktop 4.1.4 (the LD uses Palm Desktop 4.1.4e) over the top of the existing install to load up the m505 USB driver.

  • Serious Problem with New Mac Pro! Please help!!

    Ok, long story short.
    My Mac pro keeps crashing after I installed the latest 05-2007 security update. It seems to crash everytime I come back to the computer after the screensaver has been on for a while (its not the screensaver though) I reinstalled the newer v1.1 version of the update and I thought the problem had gone, but it hasnt as the computer just crashed again.
    I cannot see any correlation to any other programs, and im 99% sure its not a hardware issue. It does not seem to relate to parallels, or the screensaver, or itunes, or anything!
    And there is another crazy thing, when the computer restarts, it says that it recovered from a serious error and asks you to sumit a report, so i click the send report button and do you see a normal report window with all the code ? NO!!! Press report and the initial window just DISAPPEARS, nothing else happens!!! i.e it wont send the but to apple!! no wonder they haven't fixed it!!!

    OK heres the deal. I have never used Java before, however I am experienced in a number of other programming languages such as Actionscript and PHP. I need to create a Java app that will open up an Oracle database and check its consistency with a Sequel Server database. If they are not consistent it needs to send an email to a specified address. Is thispossible and where should I start?

    Its possible.
    What do you mean by consistency? The data/tables in the two? Maybe theres a better way than Java - an existing tool, sql scripts etc.
    If you do do it in java, I'd have objects for reading in the oracle, objects for the sql server, and then a controller object to compare the data. Then, yet another object for email, which the controller object can call if it needs to.
    I'd certainly do each bit as a separate object, and test each bit separately e.g. write something to read the data from oracle and as a test print it to a file, write another object for sending emails etc, and when they work put them together.

  • Not able to open file...maybe you can help.

    Last Saturday I was recording direct to hard drive using Adobe Premiere Elements 9 and my computer shut down. I have a 41GB file saved with a .avi extension but it is not able to be opened in any program yet. From what I understand, in Adobe, once the file is saved to the timeline (which is how I had it set up) it then goes through the process of adding the appropriate data and processing the file. Since the computer shut down, that didn’t happen. When I right click on the "avi" file in Windows and select Properties>Details the only information showing is the File information. None of the other information that is normally there in video section for a video file in Window 7 is there.
    I opened the video in "GSpot" (the free app recommended by some in this forum) and clicked on the button at the bottom for “Proposed Codec Solutions and Tests.”  I’ve included a couple of screen shots of what appeared in GSpot:

    I don’t know enough about video to know what to look for or how it might be possible to correct the first file, but I thought having this information you might be able to point me in a direction or tell me definitively that it’s hopeless and we should move on to re-recording the session.

    The shutdown is not the problem. As you'll see from my repsonse to Bill, I went on battery to reduce the noise I was getting in the audio and was expecting to get an alert but I never saw it before the computer went into Hibernate. That is an issue, but if I choose to do that again, i can correct for that by closely monitoring the battery. I'd like to find a way to get rid of the audio noise (crackling sound and low buzz) without unplugging, but my more immediate concern is recovering the 3.5 hour video that is part of a training class that we are offering online.
    Any ideas you have about that besides what Bill suggested would be great.

  • HEY! you server admins! maybe you can help me? (NNTP Server Questions)

    Has anyone had any luck getting INN 2.4.3 to work with OSX/Darwin?
    So here is the basic situation...
    I want to get a NNTP server up and running, it only really has to function on my local network. I am using INN 1.4.3 and every thing seems to work fine, to a point, source downloads, .configure runs its task with no errors as does make. make install installs everything where it needs to go, I have the system logs setup, the news user and group are set up and working as well. I have my PATH and MANPATH set so that it all plays nice with my system, but I am at a point where I havereached the limit of my knowledge.
    I think I am missing something in the post install / pre run configuration. its pretty complicated (or I am still just learning unix haha) but the default configuration seems to be alright but... when I:

    From looking at the bit below that you posted, it appears that 'inncheck' is a script of some sort. Have you checked out those line numbers, and the lines above them in this script. Where did you get this application? And what version is it?

    Well, first off. I love my MPB, Love it to bits...but... recently I learned of the Nvidia problem and at first I was paranoid, but then I said I'll be ok for now... but... then this happened.

    Now at first I thought it was just my applications, but eventually I found out it still does it even in just the finder. It seems to me like the display is trying to turn off but something is waking it, but almost instantaneously its getting the command to turn off again, Thats just my idea, any help on this would be greatly appreciated

    Ok, I know its been a long time since this was posted but In that time I've managed to get even more information. I enabled the debug report and background crashes notification from the developers tools. Now every time my laptop screen goes black I find an error report saying screensaver has crashed, so from this I've eliminated faulty wiring etc, it seems the controller for the screen going black is the screensaver engine. I found this odd and went into system preferences to see if something happened when i went to the screen saver tab, and low and behold it did, every time i switched from the desktop tab to the screen saver tab system preferences crashed also just shortly before it crashed I noticed that none of my screen savers were listed yet the error report said that I was running the abersque screen saver. So i went to the library>screen savers folder and their were no screen savers stored there, not even my old custom ones. So i went to my user folder and checked the screensaver folder there, and they were gone too. Now I know many people would suggest a re-install of mac OS X but this problem actually started before I did a re-install and it's still continuing at the moment so i went to check my time machine back up of my old system and checked the screensaver files there and they were missing also... in EVERY save that time machine had made, can anyone help me with this, it's really maddening
