Server Admin app RedirectMatch forces rules to lowercase (v 10.4.7 157.8)

I just upgraded **Server Admin** app to its version 10.4.7 (157.8). (Do not confuse that with my XServe versions ... I am administering 10.3 and 10.4 servers. I am talking about version 10.4.7 of Server Admin) In both cases, when I select "Web" and look at the Alias tab for a virtualhost, the app forces all of my *RedirectMatch* rules to lower case. They were mixed upper and lower previously (just like in my Apache config files) but Server Admin version 10.4.7 forces them to lower case. This (of course) wreaks all sorts of havoc because the redirects used to map to and from mixed upper and lowercase filenames (which of course the OS allows), but now it is impossible to map onto a filename that contains any upper-case letters because Server Admin forces the rules into all lower case. What's going on here? Anyone know?

Thanks. I've been hand-editing Apache configs at least 10 years, so no problem.
That's a pretty tricky work-around. Since Server Admin doesn't know about RedirectPermanent and RedirectTemp it just ignores them, which it should. LOL. This works for 80% of my redirects. However, I use RedirectMatch because I need regex processing on about 20% of my URLs and RedirectPermanent and RedirectTemp do not process regular expressions. So I must use RedirectMatch for many redirects. So many of us will still need a corrected version of Server Admin at some future date, unless Apple only intends that it be used by people with no sophisticated needs.
BTW, I tried using mod_speling, which can cause the server to "not care" about case, but it looks like it must be invoked after redirects have been processed so it didn't help me.
How does one report such a bug to Apple? I used to be an Apple developer (for almost 20 years) and we had well-defined channels to report bugs, but I just have no idea how to report such a bug to Apple today. Clearly it's a bug, not a feature, because Apache config files are capable of doing case-sensitive processing of Redirects, and many of us need these capabilities! And Server Admin used to allow us to do this - it just stopped working with this version.

  • Local Server Admin app on G5 power mac

Apologis if this is obvious, but just installed 10.5.8 server on a recycled G5 1.8GHz late 2004 power mac.
Seems to work well, but no idea how to locally admin the machine.
Trying to run Server Admin loads the program, but majority of menu options are greyed out and clicking 'new server admin window' doesn't actually open a server admin window. Means I can't manage any services locally on the machine. This is from the user admin account set-up during installation.
I can run it from an user admin account setup after installation was complete, but not from the account created during installation.
I can also run server admin remotely on my laptop.
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks

G5 Power Mac with OSX server (I think 10.5)....When using Alt or pressing C to start-up from a Snow Leopard installer......Am I missing something?
A Power Mac G5 CANNOT run Snow Leopard (10.6x).
Any use of a Snow Leopard disk WILL fail to install, format WILL produce a non-booting drive (without extra steps) and repair with a SL Disk Utility may worsen a damaged drive directory.
We also have a Time Machine backup from the Friday night before the failure.
However, we still can't start-up from the DVD to restore the Time Machine backup.
What you need to be doing is booting to the real, currently installed OS install disk and using the restore function available with it and Time Machine.
Without the install disc of the currently used OS, you're chances of recovery without reinstall may be slim.
Repair of a drive directory may be possible using fsck. Start by booting to Safe Mode.
    Read more here:
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk ...
Anyhow, stop mucking around with Snow Leopard in a G5.
Unless, of course, what you are really talking about is a Mac Pro, then we need to start all over again as a Mac Pro and a G5, save for a cosmetically similar case, are completely different.

  • Server Admin App. Errors

Whenever I go to the overview of my server, this error message appears in the system log:
    "Nov 26 16:26:05 server [0x0-0x1f01f].com.apple.ServerAdmin[478]: * ERROR: -[GRAxes computeLayout]:1124 - plotRect height = 0.000000 <= 0.0 *

, and the graphs of the disk space, network usage, and CPU% are missing. I installed the server as an advanced configuration with no services running as a standalone server right now with Mac OS X 10.5.1.

I'm not having that issue, but I did have a real thrill this morning. Upon arriving at my office, I glanced at ServerAdmin. All my green buttons had gone gray! I looked at some logs and services seemed to be running normally. A little calmer, I quit and restarted SA.
It advised me that I had no services configured and an invalid serial number! Panic is setting in. Still the logs looked OK. I dropped into terminal and used the serveradmin command line. Everything is running except AFP which refuses to respond to a start. So ... when in doubt, reboot.
Now SA looks normal again. I wish I could say the same for my nerves.

  • Server Admin won't let me view Share Points

I had a server crash while editing a user in Workgroup Manager that forced a restart. Since then Workgroup Manager works fine, but I cannot see the Share Points in Server Admin. I select File Sharing then Share Points, and just get a spinning indicator on the lower right. I can browse the volumes, but clicking on a user's folder does nothing. The Share/Unshare button never becomes active and I can't view the permissions. Other functions of the Server Admin seem to be OK, except the Web settings take forever to show up. This happens whether I run Server Admin locally or remotely.
I get this from the Console when I launch Server Admin but it makes no sense:

    Any ideas where to look?
    10.5.1 on dual-core intel XServe 4GB RAM

Use the inspector in work group manager to delete /config/sharepoints.
You will need to be in the local directory in work group manager and you will have to reshare all shares but no data will be removed. You should probably reboot after deleting the directory. This would replace the old way of doing it in the past with netinfo manager since we don't have netinfo anymore.

  • Server Admin is so slow to respond

    Hi All
I have a mac-mini with OS X Server 10.5.6 installed. I have a test network which I'm playing around with at home. I'm currently trying to set it up as a open directory master, install dns and dhcp. My problem is that whenever I select Server admin to do any tasks it take absolutely ages to respond.
It will sit there with the rainbow wheel spinning.
The server has all the latest updates
If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated

I have the same problem and basically, my Server Admin utility NEVER connects to my MacOS X 10.5.6 Server (10 users).
It's supremely frustrating since this major problem has just started, out of the blue.
Yes, I restarted the server and it doesn't help.
Furthermore, the Server Admin doesn't open (or connect, more precisely) with either the server itself of from another (LAN) Mac. And when I "force quit" the Server Admin (because nothing is happening, as fas as I can tell), it gives me an error (and I send it to Apple).
This is the kind of error the system diagnoses...

  • Server Admin cannot check license because of firewall

The Server Admin App keeps popping off to "Invalid serial number " if I turn on the firewall service.
1.Serial number Support on port 627/UDP is enabled on all adress groups.
2.verifed via ipfw command "allow udp from any to any dst-port 626"
    3. With firewall off, Serial number is OK, Server Admin works fine.
This is OS X server 10.4.7 , up to date.
Any Ideas on how to run this server with firewall enabled, and still allow the SN to be verified?(can't picture my self popping a server on teh inet w/o firewall!!!)
    Thanks much,
    Dan

    Thanks for the reply Roger!
I found this interesting bit in the serialnumberd log.It finds something it doesn't like in the fw ruleset, and doesn't even bother to try to connect to Apple.. I'm going to uncheck the serial rule entry I manually selected in Server Admin, and see if that makes a difference..

  • Server Admin's proxy configuration... whacked? (Doesn't seem to work)

I just upgraded to Apache2 so that I could, sensibly, use the Server Admin app to manage all my web sites. Previously, my various httpd conf files were too complicated and I had resorted to hand coding them.
The good news is Server Admin and Apache2 are much closer to functional.
One bit of bad news: I can't get the reverse proxies to work consistently. Once set up, I get the most peculiar mix of success and failure -- almost at random. For example, some URIs load; others don't; sometimes a page loads, but it's style sheet doesn't.
What I want is simply this:
    */confluence (proxy to) localhost:8081/confluence
Using hand-edited config files, I'd usually do something along these lines (and this works great, by the way, if I stick it into 0000any_80www.mydomain.com.conf:
    ProxyRequests Off
    ProxyPassReverse /confluence http://localhost:8081/confluence
    ProxyPass /confluence http://localhost:8081/confluence
So, off to Server Admin to make this work. I tried checking "Enable Reverse Proxy" and specifying a Proxy Path of "/confluence" and a Worker URL of http://localhost:8081/confluence. This ended up created the following entry in my 0000_...conf file:
    <IfModule modproxybalancer.c>
    ProxyPass /confluence balancer://balancer-group/
    ProxyPassReverse /confluence balancer://balancer-group/
    <Proxy "balancer://balancer-group">
    BalancerMember http://localhost:8081/confluence
    </Proxy>
    </IfModule>
I wasn't able to figure out what a Sticky Session Identifier, Route or Load Factor would be used for... so I left those blank. Perhaps that's why it's not working... sure would be nice if there was some help in Server Admin...
Hm. Anyhow, Ok, looks alright. I'm not totally sure about the balancer bits (like why they are there), but I don't see why it wouldn't work. But... IT DOES NOT. I get totally inconsistent results. Some pages load, some don't. Sometimes I get some page assets, while others don't come through. Bah. However, if I get rid of the above, and simply put this in:
    ProxyRequests Off
    ProxyPassReverse /confluence http://localhost:8081/confluence
    ProxyPass /confluence http://localhost:8081/confluence
It works great. Only problem is, anytime I edit a server configuration, Server Admin goes and deletes those lines! I think I've found a way around it though. I put the above lines into a "0000.proxy" file (in /etc/apache2/sites/0000.proxy) and now I've added this line:
    Include "/etc/apache2/sites/0000.proxy"
At the bottom of my 0000_...conf file. So far, Server Admin hasn't deleted that line... and it seems to be working.
BUT, I'd just LOVE it if someone could tell me how to make this work without hacking around in the command line! Very annoying -- and of course, my proxies are showing up in Server Admin, and I really wish that would work.

    Hi there
For the benefit of anyone looking at this thread, what is meant here is that if you choose to open the help for RoboHelp, you have an abiliity to add a comment. That comment may be kept private or shared with others. If you elect to share it with others, it is generally added as a comment into the pages that provide the help. If approved, Adobe may amend the help topic to reflect the new information.
@Jared - Was that information missing in your file? I thought when you elected to use this file that it was automatically populated with all available settings. And unfortunately (IMNSHO) the settings don't immediately reflect the settings in the dialog. (I think they should, as a starting point. At least, that's the behavior *I* expected the first time I played with the feature. I was admittedly taken aback when it didn't work that way.)
Assuming the setting was missing, how did you manage to sort what setting should be added?
    Cheers... Rick

  • Cannot log into server admin

Today I cannot login to Server Admin App. I have tried:
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.servermgrd.plist
This shows the it is loaded. Server Admin just shakes as if my password is wrong yet I can load Workgroup Admin fine and if I login to the server directly, I can authenticate as Admin and the password.
    Any ideas?

  • Server Admin - iCal service not showing?

I've got iCal enabled (and it's running) but the service doesn't show up on the Server Admin. I need it so I can configure the service. Any idea why it wouldn't show up in here? Thanks!

    GreatGeek,
If I follow your question correctly, you are using Server Admin.app.
Apple moved the iCal GUI into the Server.app.
They split up the services into two control apps for now from what used to be one.  Maybe in time they will be consolidated again...

  • Problem with server admin connectio

    Hi,
    Im using Snow leopard server.
I have a problem with connection to server via server admin app. It just says could not connect to server.
    At server console there is:
    2/27/10 2:58:30 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.servermgrd[414]) Job appears to have crashed: Trace/BPT trap
    2/27/10 2:58:30 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.servermgrd) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
    2/27/10 2:58:30 AM com.apple.ReportCrash.Root[410] 2010-02-27 02:58:30.829 ReportCrash[410:390b] Saved crash report for servermgrd[414] version ??? (???) to /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/servermgrd2010-02-27-025830localhost.crash
    And that repeats.
Any ideas how to fix this ?

Yes it did work before. Made some changes to DNS and then server admin lost connection. Server works correctly (dns, mail, ssh access) only server admin connection is lost.
    servermgrd is running:
bash-3.2# ps aux | grep servermgrd
    root 298 0.0 0.7 2494120 28748 ?? Ss 1:49PM 0:22.16 servermgrd -x
    root 1588 0.0 0.0 2425708 276 s001 R+ 2:29PM 0:00.00 grep servermgrd
Is there any way to reset/reinstall servermgrd and its settings to default

  • Cant Access Server Admin and Server Preferences anymore

After upgrading to the latest Mac OS X 10.6.5 Version and/or changing Admin Password (I dont know the reason yet) I dont have access to my Server Admin and Server Preferences while I still can use my Workgroup Manager including Directory Admin (driadmin) and System Preferences. My Client Macs cant access Filesharing services and timemachine backup service anymore on the server, too. Other Services like MyEyeTV, Wuala, iTunes are working fine on the server and can be used by my Client MACs in my LAN.
How could I proceed to fix this issue?
What I have tried so far:
I have tried to access my Server Admin thru the Client Mac mini using Server Admin App.
I checked the OS Version: Mac OS X Server 10.6.5 (10H575)
I checked the Server Admin Version: 10.6.5 (328.4)
I also reinstalled the latest MAC OS X Server Update 10.6.5
I still have root access. (Verified by DataQuest Engineer)
Used also 127.0.0.1 Address to Access the Server.
Is there a more elegant way to fix this issue than reinstall the server?

... well uninstalling "Hands Off!" Application solved the problem.
Also if I assumed that i disabled this application, it was still active.

  • Server Admin can't connect to my server

I updated to 10.4.10 and since then I haven't been able to connect to my server using Server Admin or Server Monitor. In my system.log i get the following error over and over again:
    /Applications/Server/Server Admin.app/Contents/MacOS/Server Admin: [533] ServerManager session failed in connect(server.example.com,xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,311): 61\n
I appologize if this is a dup. With no search function currently, it's hard to find what I'm looking for.

You could try this as an almost last resort ( would only if i have a reasonably recent backup of the data on that drive JUST in case it becomes non-bootable (Very slim chance; but 1% is still higher than 0%)
    Here we go:
Delete kernel extension caches, other caches for some issues
A number of common issues that crop up after incremental Mac OS X updates can be resolved by deleting specific cache files -- specifically kernel extension caches -- and restarting.
This can most easily be accomplished with a shareware utility like Tiger Cache Cleaner, but also bears a manual process which involves dragging the following files to the trash:
    com.apple.kernelcaches (a folder in /System/Library/Caches)
    Extensions.kextcache (a file in /System/Library)
    Extensions.mkext (a file in /System/Library/)
    com.apple.ATS (a folder in /Library/Caches/)
Files that start with com.apple.LaunchServices (in /Library/Caches)
You will be prompted to enter your administrator password when dragging these files to the trash. You may need to restart after moving them to the trash.
Re-apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 combo updater
A workaround that has proved successful for various problems caused by previous incremental Mac OS X updaters is re-application of the current combination updater:
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update (PPC) [165MB]
    http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/nph-reg3rdpty2.pl/product=14212&cat=1&platform =osx&method=sa/MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.10PPC.dmg
Mac OS X Server 10.4.10 Combo Update (PPC) [218MB]
    http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/nph-reg3rdpty2.pl/product=14218&cat=1&platform =osx&method=sa/MacOSXSrvrCombo10.4.10PPC.dmg
Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files that were not replaced by the "Delta" (adjacent version-to-version) update.
(Pulled this info from here http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070709083624260 )
Then I would agree you will probably have no recourse but to reinstall.

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
No Server expert here, but I'm fairly certain you must replace those 2 files with copies from elsewhere.

  • Server Admin Access

I have a user who had full remote admin access to her Mac Server from her Mac desktop. We recently changed out her desktop for a new iMac. She no longer has full admin remote access to the server. Did I miss something on the setup of the new machine? She can walk to the server and log in with full admin access, but the remote session does not allow for full admin rights.  Any help would be appreciated.

Remote access via what? Server.app? Server Admin.app? Remote Desktop?
What OS(es) were running previously, what OS(es) are running now?
What admin rights are unavailable (i.e. what can't she do?)
