Servlet / JSP caching problem!!

I have a servlet that is running a process which creates an image. The servlet also is creating two jsp pages, one with a frameset for the header and body, and the other being the body. The body is supposed to dynamically use the new image, but it is cached and shows the old image until I manually hit the refresh button. In the servlet, I delete all the files / images before the process is run. When I had the image inside its own frame, I got it to work, but the client doesn't want it that way. I don't understand why it does not work now?

I saw some topics about this problem in Servlets Forums in this site, try to find there.

  • JSP Caching in Tomcat

    Hello, I'm using Tomcat 5.0 and I'm having problems with JSP caching.
    My webapp is hosted in a remote server on which I telnet into to do my development work. At first, everything was fine, i.e. I didn't face any JSP caching problem.
    However, when another developer decided to telnet into the same server to do his development work on the same webapp, we started to experience JSP caching problem.
    We had to delete the content of the "work" folder and restart the server for any changes to take effect.
    Does anyone know how to sort out this problem?

    OK, I've found out the way to resolve this.
    Basically, each developer will need to "touch" all his JSPs to make sure their JSPs get compiled.

  • Weblogic.servlet.jsp.JspException

    I am using WLServer6.1, and keep gettingg this error:
              Error: translation of /my.jsp failed:
              weblogic.servlet.jsp.JspException: (line 1): a variable named
              "sessionbean" was previously declared at line 1 of /my.jsp
              Error: [jspc]: 1 file(s) failed:

              Here is line one:
              <jsp:useBean id="sessionbean" scope="session"
              class="com.mycom.beans.session.MySessionBean" />
              Now, if I change sessionbean to Asessionbean:
              <jsp:useBean id="_A_sessionbean" scope="session"
              class="com.mycom.beans.session.MySessionBean" />
              same error:

              Error: [jspc]: 1 file(s) failed:
              /my.jsp
              All these displays perfect with JRun and iPlanet.
              Any idea?
              Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply. I have already opened up the BEA Support Case and they have provided me the latest JRockit rolling patch (1.4.2_08). After installing and pointing JAVA_HOME to this latest JRockit version, the javax.servlet.jsp.JspException problem got resolved. I have seen that most of the times JRockit related problems get resolved with latest rolling patch of JRockit.

  • Caching problem of servlet

    Hi guys
    We are facing this problem of caching within our project. The project aims to generate a html code to pick up some rich media ads details at random and displaying on the html file where the generated code is expected to be pasted. We developed two servlets, one which extracts the ads from the database randomly and then depanding on the ad type it calls the other servlet as src of an iframe, which in turn puts all code for displaying the rich media ads. The script which we are generating for the user to paste onto their pages is:
    <script LANGUAGE="JAVASCRIPT" src="http://192.168.1.6:8080/advert_java/servlet/GetAdServlet?region=1&zone=1&type=nossi&cachevar=yes">
    </script>First servlet (GetAdServlet) returns the javascript statements and thus is called using this generated code. Now cotents of the iframe are supplied by the second servlet ie richMediaServlet. This servlet is called like
    iframeURL = fullHttpDir+"/servlet/RichMediaServlet?";
    iframeURL += "bannerCode="+ RNBanner (BannerCode to be called);
    out.println("document.write(\"<iframe  src='"  + iframeURL +  "' height=" + hheight +" width="+ wwidth + " SCROLLING=no FRAMEBORDER=0 MARGINWIDTH=2 MARGINHEIGHT=2 onfocus='window.focus(); return iframeFocus()'>\");");
    out.println("document.write(\"</iframe>\");");This richmediaServlet returns HTML into <iframe>. when richmediaservlet is called, a parameter 'bannerCode' is passed. then richmediaServlet fatches the banner from the database and displays the banner into the <iframe>.
    Now the problem comes when we run the html file containing the script tag mentioned above, and refresh our page, ideally it should pick the ads randomly and pass it on to RichMediaServlet.
    I also try debugging both servlets. I called the getadservlet from javascript mentioned above and put debugging info in both the servlets, now for every refresh we do on the html side, we are getting a different random bannercode in adservlet but in richmedia when we print the bannercode received in querystring it is taking an older value which was displayed some time back and keeps on doing this for quiet a long time, making it look like some caching problem of RichMediaServlet.
    Instead when we tried to put the same html <script> code into another servlet's doGet, everything seems to be working fine.
    i have also used the following code to prevent the caching on both the setvlets
    long currentTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
    response.setHeader("Cache-Control", "no-cache, must-revalidate");
    response.setHeader("Pragma", "no-cache");
    response.setDateHeader("Last-modified", currentTime);
    response.setHeader("Expires", "Sat, 6 May 1995 12:00:00 GMT");     and following in the iframe's head tag before the iframe tag in the getAdServlet.
    out.println("document.write('<head>');");
    out.println("document.write('<meta http-equiv=\"Cache-Control\" content=\"no-cache,must-revalidate\">');");
    out.println("document.write('<meta http-equiv=\"Pragma\" content=\"no-cache\">');");
    out.println("document.write('<meta http-equiv=\"Last-modified\" content=\""+ currentTime + "\">');");
    out.println("document.write('<meta http-equiv=\"expires\" content=\"Sat, 6 May 1995 12:00:00 GMT\">');");
    out.println("document.write('</head>');");I request you all geeks to try and help me to your best. The project is at its final stages and in high urgency now.

    i think the caching is being in the browser, with the iframe.
    You should try passing a random param to the servlet in the iframe URL, something like:
    var a = Math.random() * 10000000; //for example
    out.println("document.write(\"<iframe  src='"  + iframeURL +"&rand="+a+"' height=" + hheight +" width="+ wwidth + " SCROLLING=no FRAMEBORDER=0 MARGINWIDTH=2 MARGINHEIGHT=2 onfocus='window.focus(); return iframeFocus()'>\");");
    out.println("document.write(\"</iframe>\");");
    ...It should force the browser to ask for the servlet again
    hope this helps...

  • Having problems compiling *.java with import javax.servlet.jsp......

    I've been trying to do the tutorials in a book titled Apache Jakarta-Tomcat as part of my introduction to JSP. I'm new to Java but do know the basics. I have on my machine Java 1.3, Java 1.4, Java FrameWorks 2.1 and Jython 2.1 on Win2000 Pro. So enough about my configuration. I have never worked with packages also.
    I downloaded the files from the books site due to the fact I make a lot of typos when hand coding Java (I've become a pretty good debugger of my own code). But everytime I go to compile the *.java I get error messages. So below you will find HelloTag.java and beneath that the error messages that are thrown when I try and compile it. I tested other bits of *.java and have had no problem compiling them. Is there a JSP module I'm missing?
    Am I doing something wrong or am I missing something from my configuration.

    Well, it looks like you've not got the servlet development kit JAR on your classpath. I think it'll probably be called servlet.jar on your system. Add that to the classpath if it's not already there.
    Incidentally, you've bumped into one of the areas Java's slightly lenient - declaring a method that looks like a constructor:
    public HelloTag() { }
    public void HelloTag() { }The first is a constructor, the second is a normal method. I'm assuming you intended to have the former instead of the latter.
    Anyway, hope this helps.

  • Servlet - EJB, caching home & context problem

    Hello,
    I just run into the following problem:
    I created a thin client which accesses the EJB's via a servlet.
    In this servlet I cached the InitialContext und and the reference
    to the Home interface. While creating the initial context I provided
    login/password to access the EJB so it can't be accessed from the guest
    user.
    The first method call works as expected, any further call results
    in a RemoteException - Insufficent permissions.
    Any hints? I'm using 5.1, SP6.
    Zhanxs in advance
    Marcel

    The security creditials you suppplied to the IntialContext are only applied
    to the thread that created the InitialContext. I have only found one
    work-around - Construct an otherwise useless IntialContext each time a
    thread attempts to use and EJB or its home. This is inefficient and almost
    (not quite) destroys the advantage of caching the stubs.
    Is there any other solution? Any thing coming down the pike?

  • Problems trying to "hot-deploy" class files in iPlanet. Want to deploy a compiled class (i.e. servlet, jsp) without having to bounce the server. Known issue in iPlanet? How can I get around?

    Currently iPlanet is not allowing us to hot deploy a modified class file(i.e., servlet) as it advertises. It doesn't seem to have a problem with jsp's however. But everytime we modify a servlet(say in an emergency), and wish to deploy, we still have to bounce the KJS. We would like to avoid this if possible. How? I heard this might be a known issue in iPlanet.

    I apologize but this is a clarification of this problem. We are having a problem dynamically reloading java classes that are referenced by jsp's and servlets. The problem DOES NOT exist when trying to reload jsps or servlets themselves. We would like to reload these classes without having to restart the processes. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

  • Problem: package javax.servlet.jsp does not exist

    I am a novice JSP programmer. My projects that use any javax.servlet classes are not seeing those at all. I am working with a group of folks using Java SE 1.5. (Note: I'm using Windows so the directory separator is "\")
    What Used to work:
    1. Nearly all my projects were working using Java version 1.6. These projects were developed as examples from Wrox and Apress books about JSP and Struts.
    What has changed:
    1. I un-installed the version 1.6 of JDK and JRE, as well as tomcat, netbeans, and all the associated libraries/jars.
    2. I installed version 1.5 of JDK and JRE, as well as tomcat, netbeans, and all the associated libraries/jars.
    3. I updated my JAVA_HOME, CATALINA_HOME, CLASSPATH, and PATH environmental variables. I made sure that the path to servlet-api.jar (in the tomcat common\lib) is included in the classpath.
    What is wrong:
    1. References to javax.servlet.* are not satisfied--they are flagged in the source code in NetBeans and I get compiler errors with any project containing those references. For example:
    ... package javax.servlet.jsp does not exist
    import javax.servlet.jsp.*;
    What I've found:
    1. My CATALINA_HOME=C:\Java\Tomcat 5.5
    2. My JAVA_HOME=C:\Java\jdk1.5.0_11
    3. My CLASSPATH=.;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QTJava.zip;%JAVA_HOME%\lib;%JAVA_HOME%\jre\lib;%JAVA_HOME%\lib\jsp-api.jar;%CATALINA_HOME%\common\lib\servlet-api.jar;C:\Java\logging-log4j-1.2.14\dist\lib\log4j-1.2.14.jar
    4. My PATH=c:\wint\BIN;%JAVA_HOME%\bin;%JAVA_HOME%\jre\bin;%CATALINA_HOME%\bin;C:\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0\bin;D:\MiKTeX 2.5\miktex\bin;C:\Perl\bin\;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\;C:\SFU\Perl\bin\;C:\SFU\common\;C:\Program Files\Lahey-Fujitsu Fortran\v7.1\Bin;C:\Program Files\Lahey-Fujitsu Fortran\v7.1\Win32\Bin
    What I need:
    1. I need to have some reference to the servlet classes satisfied in my configuration. Any help is appreciated.
    thanks
    jondr

    Oh. I got some over-the-shoulder debug help.
    My error was in the classpath specification:
    The path: %JAVA_HOME%\lib\jsp-api.jar
    Should be: %CATALINA_HOME%\lib\jsp-api.jar
    That contains the javax.servlet.jsp.*
    Thimk.

    Hi,
              It's peculiar that you're seeing JspStub and jsp.config instances
              increasing. Can you convert your application to a stand alone app that
              doesn't do any database access and send me the application with instructions
              on how to run it. If so, I can look into it quickly - otherwise, I can only
              guess and that is a waste of time for both of us.

  • I am facing a caching problem in the Web-Application that I've developed us

    Dear Friends,
    I am facing a caching problem in the Web-Application that I've developed using Java/JSP/Servlet.
    Problem Description: In this application when a hyperlink is clicked it is supposed to go the Handling Servlet and then servlet will fetch the data (using DAO layer) and will store in the session. After this the servlet will forward the request to the view JSP to present the data. The JSP access the object stored in the session and displays the data.
    However, when the link is clicked second time then the request is not received by our servlet and the cached(prev data) page is shown. If we refresh the page then request come to the servlet and we get correct data. But as you will also agree that we don't want the users to refresh the page again and again to get the updated data.
    We've included these lines in JSPs also but it does no good:
    <%
    response.setHeader("Expires", "0");
    response.setHeader("Cache-Control" ,"no-cache, must-revalidate");
    response.setHeader("Pragma", "no-cache");
    response.setHeader("Cache-Control","no-store");
    %>
    Request you to please give a solution for the same.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Mohan

    However, when the link is clicked second time then the request is not received by our servlet Impossible mate.. can you show your code. You sure there are no javascript errors ?
    Why dont you just remove your object from the session after displaying the data from it and see if your page "automatically" hits the servlet when the link is clicked.
    cheers..

  • Servlet downloads Excel file ok but also attempts Servlet & JSP files !!

    Hi,
    My Servlet code downloads a csv into Excel as required BUT it also attempts to download the JSP file (that calls the servlet) and the Servlet file as well.... How do I ensure that only the csv file is downloaded. I am using the following code.
    <servlet code>
    public void doPost(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res)
    throws ServletException, IOException
    ServletOutputStream out = res.getOutputStream ();
    res.setContentType( "application/vnd.ms-excel" );
    String report = req.getParameter("report");
    filename = report + user_id + ".csv";
    String fileURL = the url;
    res.setHeader("Cache-Control", "no-cache");
    res.setHeader("Content-disposition",
    "attachment; filename=" +
    report + ".csv" );
    BufferedInputStream bis = null;
    BufferedOutputStream bos = null;
    try
    URL url = new URL ( fileURL );
    bis = new BufferedInputStream(url.openStream());
    bos = new BufferedOutputStream(out);
    byte[] buff = new byte[2048];
    int bytesRead;
    while(-1 != (bytesRead = bis.read(buff, 0, buff.length)))
    bos.write(buff, 0, bytesRead);
    catch(final MalformedURLException e)
    System.out.println ( "MalformedURLException." );
    throw e;
    catch(final IOException e)
    System.out.println ( "IOException." );
    throw e;
    finally
    if (bis != null)
    bis.close();
    if (bos != null)
    bos.close();
    </servlet code>
    thanks in advance

    This problems exists whether I try IE4, IE5 or IE5.5.
    Netscape is not an option.
    The running order in this download is Servlet, JSP then Excel file !!! All I want is for the Excel (csv) file to be downloaded. I do not see any problem with the code, but obviously there is. Please help if you can.
    cheers for any solutions.

  • Cache problem - BIG PROBLEM

    Hi,
    I'm having a hard time and it is probably cache's fault. Sometimes my application shows data that is not updated. For example, the user changes the status of an order from X to Y but when the page returns, X is still there. The database is updated accordingly, but not the presentation. It happens only when there is a proxy in the way. So, I assume this has something to do with the proxy cache, but unfortunately my attempts to solve the problem failed.
    It is worth to mention that the application is not based on servlets/JSP. It is based on tapestry but I think this issue is not restrict only to tapestry. Many here may have had the same issue before. I included the following JSP in the pages but it didn't work:
    <meta http-equiv="Cache-Control" content="no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate"/>
    <meta http-equiv="If-Modified-Since" content="Sat, 1 Jan 2000 00:00:00 GMT">
    <meta http-equiv="Pragma" content="no-cache"/>
    <meta http-equiv="Expires" content="-1"/>I really appreciate your help!

    1) To handle <bodycontent> you should inherit from BodyTagSupport
    class
    2) You should use your bean like: <td><atmjsp:ATM/></td>
    with closing slash - it's bodyless tag - this mistake
    causes JSP compiler to report error
    Enjoy!

    None of my filesystems are full. Why does this error occur then.
    I have tried to check the jsp configuration but there is nothing to see there ...
    Can annyone help me with this problem ?
    Thanks

    Hi
    I solved the problem.
    The server did not have enough memory available to spawn the javac process... Therefor: Not enough
    space.
    I just reduced the memory set up for weblogic and it worked.
    regards

  • HELP: jsp cookie problem

    Hi,
    1) I have a page (index.jsp) that looks for a cookie, if the cookie isn't there it redirects to a login page.
    2) The login page, on submit, calls a servlet that sets the cookie (when usr and pwd are valid). Then the servlet redirects to the original page (index.jsp).
    3)The problem is, when redirected to the index.jsp, index.jsp cannot see the cookie -- so it redirects to login.jsp again. But if I refresh index.jsp it sees the cookie and works fine.
    So it looks like the cookie isn't totally set between the addCookie in the servlet and the load of the index.jsp. Is there so kind of "commit" or something I'm supposed to do after the "addCookie" to make it take correctly?
    Here are some code snippets -- any help is greatly appreciated!
    # the servlet
    response.addCookie(new Cookie("loggedin-username", sUsername));
    RequestDispatcher dispatcher = getServletContext().getRequestDispatcher("/index.jsp");
    dispatcher.forward(request, response);
    # the index.jsp
    <%
         Cookie[] cookies = request.getCookies();
         boolean bLoggedIn = false;
         int i=0;
         while ( (cookies != null) && !bLoggedIn && (i<cookies.length) ) {
              if (cookies.getName().equals("loggedin-username")) {
                   Cookie c = cookies[i];
                   bLoggedIn = (c.getValue() != null);
              i++;
         if (!bLoggedIn) {
              response.sendRedirect("login.jsp");
    %>
    You are logged in.
    <p>

    2) The login page, on submit, calls a servlet that sets the cookie (when usr and pwd are valid). Then the servlet redirects to the original page (index.jsp).No the Servlet does a RequestDispatcher.forward to the index.jsp. A forward is a server side action that does not go to the browser and the target Servlet/JSP gets the original request and response objects.
    So in the Servlet you set the cookie.
    response.addCookie(new Cookie("loggedin-username", sUsername));Notice that you set it in the response object.
    Then the forward
    dispatcher.forward(request, response);And then the JSP looks for the cookie.
    Cookie[] cookies = request.getCookies();Notice it looks in the request for the cookies but since the response has not gone to the browser the browser has not had the opportunity to add the cookie into the request.
    Then the forward
