Set NumberFormatter in Scientific notation

I need to label VerticalLinearAxis with a very large number, e.g., 100000000000000. How canI use the mx:NumberFormatter to display the
label as 100E+13?

    Hello all.  I'm having an issue with Numberformatter that I could use some assistance with.  It looks like this:

    I'm applying it to a Number object that was created from a deserialized java BigDecimal.  In most cases, this is successful. So, 0.000024603877571 becomes 0.000025 and so on.
    However, in some cases, my Number is in scientific notation like "0E-15".  In this case, the NumberFormatter formats the number as -15.000000.  Not helpful.  Any ideas on what is going on and how I might could work around it?

    Thanks for the quick response, Michael.  I was about to simply change the sending of the numbers as a string when I decided to try one more thing.  If I use toFixed() on my number first (before the NumberFormatter.format() function) it seems to fix the issue.  So, for example, in my label function for a column of a datagrid that has Numbers that sometimes appear in scientific notation, I do something like this:

                    var myNumber:Number = item.number;
                    var myNumberString:String = myNumber.toFixed(20);
                    return numberFormatter.format(myNumberString);
    That (toFixed) appears to not mess up the regular numbers as well as the ones that have E notation.  I don't know if anyone has any thoughts on the workaround.  It seems to work find since my formatter is ultimately rounding to a precison of 6.

    I just changed from Numbers '09 (2.3) to Number 3.2 on Mavericks (OS X 10.9.3) and the new version doesn't seem to recognise "e" or "E" as scientific notation. When I set the cell format to scientific and type "0.0015", Numbers returns "1.5×10^-03". I would however prefer to obtain "1.5e-3". And vice versa: if, after setting the cell format to scientific, I type "1.5e-3", it automatically formats the cell as text and I can't get it to recognise it as scientific notation. With "E" instead of "e", the problem is exactly the same. Does anyone know how I can change this setting? I already tried to search for an answer to my question, but couldn't find anything...

    I can't duplicate the problem here, either when the cells are formatted as Automatic or as Scientific:
    When you type 1.5e-3 are you making sure not to enter a space after the e?  (When I type a space the cell automatically formats as Text.)

    Hi,
    New here and new to CF8. I'm using MySQL 5.0.51b with the
    latest JDBC connector and am getting unsigned BIGINT columns larger
    than 10^12 back in scientific notation instead of a whole number.
    Here's an example:

    cuid is an unsigned BIGINT in ctable. In the CF dump, cuid is

    number. If I try to use cuid, say as a URL parameter, it also ends
    up in scientific notation, which is obviously undesirable. Is there
    a configuration setting I need to change somewhere or is the CF /
    JDBC way to deal with this to use CAST / CONVERT on BIGINT columns
    to ensure they stay in whole number format?

  • Scientific notation doesn't display correctly

    Hi, this is just a general question but it's about the Calculator app. The problem is with displaying answers in scientific notation. When I'm in scientific calculator mode, answers displayed on the screen only appear in scientific notation when they are larger than the number of digits that can be displayed. However, whenever I use it to calculate something in which the answer is smaller than the set precision for the number of decimal places, it always gives 0 instead of scientific notation. For example, if I type a number such as 1E19 and press =, then the answer displays correctly as 1E19. However, if I type 1/1E19, and press =, then the answer simply shows up as 0 instead of 1E-19, which is the correct answer in scientific notation. So, it seems that the scientific notation in Calculator simply does not display negative exponents in the scientific notation (I know that I can type such numbers but for some reason, it cannot display them as answers). This is very annoying because I often work with very small numbers, not just very large ones. Is there any way that I can get the scientific notation to display negative exponents when I'm working with very small numbers and when the answer is smaller than the set number of decimal places?

    There are tonnes of possibilities and many websites with suggestions. I tried all sorts of these option (clear cache, clear cookies, anti-virus changes, page style options etc) with no success until eventually I accidentally changed my character encoding autodetect (firefox 6) from "off" to "universal" and everything is fine.

  • Double in Scientific Notation after Marshal

    I have an element defined as an xsd:double. If I try and place a value say 100 into the element and then I marshal it I get an output of <Quantity>100.0</Quantity>... That is fine....
    However, if I put a value in of say 1000000000, I get an output of <Quantity>1.0E9</Quantity> when I marshal.
    Can I turn a setting on (or off) so the output does not get converted into scientific notation?

    I also verified the XML standard and you are right that the values are legal xsd:double values. What made this a problem for me is that the XSLT functions that use XPATH number() to process these values failed because XPATH specifies that a number is:
    Number ::= Digits ( '.' Digits?)? | '.' Digits
    which does not handle the exponents at all. So the XML documents produced could not be handled by XSLT processors.
    For fun, I redefined my schema definition to replace xsd:double with:

              <xs:pattern value="(-)?[0-9]*(.[0-9]+)?" />
         </xs:restriction>
    </xs:simpleType>
    which is essentially a non-exponent based double. JAXB rendered the document, but then the validator complained that the output did not match the pattern. So JAXB does not use this pattern as a method of determining output, only as a method of validation.
    This is why I replaced the DoubleType class for my solution. The alternative of using the jaxb:globalBindings is probably a cleaner approach. I think I'll switch my implementation. Thanks for the pointer!

  • Calculator: removing scientific notation in results?

    This seems like it must be a bug or a corrupted app, but I'd just like to confirm: with the calculator in "basic" mode, dividing two numbers which only have one significant digit returns a result like so: 1/3000 = 0.000333 (the setting for decimal places seems to be irrelevant).
    However, changing either number to have more than one significant digit returns the result in scientific notation, like so: 1/3100 = 3.225806e-04.
    Can anyone else duplicate this or help me correct it? It's obnoxious to have to keep adjusting the numbers. And yes, I realize that means my math skills suck. Thanks in advance.

  • Remove scientific notation in report

    I'm calculating a number and placing it in a comment box on a report. This works fine, but one of the numbers has decided to display in scientific notation (1.52666667e-3). The problem is that the comment box is not large enough to display the scientific notation and gives no indication of not fitting into the box. Instead I see 1.52666 with no indication of the exponent. I'd much rather see .001527 however I don't want to force a STR format with "d.dddddd" because most numbers don't need this much precision and I'd probably run into errors for numbers such as 12345 which won't fit into the comment box with forced 6 digit precision. If I can force it out of scientific precision, it'll probably be fine.
    BTW: is there a certain number range where scientific notation becomes the default? If I knew this range I could then force the format with the STR function to display the way I want. e.g. IF x>-001 and x<.001 then STR(X,"d.dddd")
    Either method would probably work for me.

    MyVar is a 2 dimensional pointer (Channel Group, Channel) to numeric channels that meet some criteria.
    change box size: I had to make the box 3 times the width to display the number correctly. It shows 1.27933333333333E-03*. I'm appending the "*" to show the field is calculated instead of unadultered from the .csv. Maybe the problem isn't that the number is small, but that it's infinitely repeating. The number is calculate from the values .001919 - abs(.001919)/3
    Left Justify: no difference from right justify.
    Autoadj: shows 1.28E-
    I'm making a column of channels on the report, that's why the comment text is being set multiple times.

  • Scientific Notation when Downloading Reports

    When downloading reports from a web template, in either Excel or CSV, some values are getting converted to scientific notation in the downloaded file. I am wondering if there is a setting which prevents any data to be converted to scientific notation when downloading. The data appears to be fine when viewing the report in Web.

    You have downloaded the file to CSV which is also excel based format and uses most of the Excel's features, and when data is CSV file is in scientic foirmat , same will come in notepad..just do one thing select the format as number in the csv file by selecting column...and save it...in csv/notepad you will now see actual value

    Hi,
    I am trying to plot some data that I measured in scientific notation (2E-19, etc) and I have tried everything to manually set the maximum/minimum limits of my plot in either axis without success. I have typed 2E-19 and even the number will all the preceding zeros, but I keep getting a "0" in the field. Does anyone know how to do this?

    I see a lot of people asking questions about how to prevent showing Scientific Notation.  I have the opposite problem, I can't seem to show scientific notation.
    In the field I'll Enter: 2.5E-5
    After commit, the value show: 0
    If I look in the database, it shows: 0.000027

    My Calculator App seems to randomly switch back to scientific notation instead of displaying results in regular x.xx format.
    I tried deleting the com.apple.calculator.plist file and then relaunching Calculator but that didn't work.

    Then, I'm at a loss. Mine only shows scientific notation when the value exceeds whatever's set as the number's max range. You might want to peruse Calculator's help files.

    I have 2 issues with formatting numbers with scientific notation via the DecimalFormat class
    ISSUE 1: Disregard of the number of MAXIMUM FRACTOINAL DIGITS
         in the code:

    ISSUE 2:
    Number of significant digits displayed:- I really just need a sanity check on this one
    The 1.4.2 API for DecimalFormat states
    ?     The number of significant digits in the mantissa is the sum of the minimum integer and
    maximum fraction digits, and is unaffected by the maximum integer digits. For example,
    12345 formatted with "##0.##E0" is "12.3E3". To show all digits, set the significant digits
    count to zero. The number of significant digits does not affect parsing.
    I tried this ? it displays 123.45E3, or 5 significant digits? Looks like the number of significant digits
    is MAX integer + MAX fractional digits in a pattern. Am I correct (and the API not correct)?

    Thanks. I'm assuming you're responding to issue #1. I did try it, and it worked, as expected. I never seem to have an issue when all symbols
    preceding the decimal are 0. My issue, I suppose, is the inconsistency of how the formatting
    works, when it comes to the number of fractional digit positions. Most of the times it 'behaves' and
    only prints out the number of digits you ask, but sometimes it does not.
    I've tested quite a few combinations. I'm attaching the code (in case you need help sleeping tonight).
    The only 'pattern' I've noticed is that this issue only occurs when the total number of digits specified
    in the pattern (before and after decimal) is 4. (exception ... if all digits specified before the decimal
    are 0s, this never occurs)
    I know a simple solution ... make sure I never have
    a total of 4 #s and 0s in my pattern. But again, my question is why ... and/or ... does this type of
    inconsistency crop up elsewhere.
