  • Is "IBM VisualAge For Java" any good ?

    Considering getting IBM's VAJ for our systems development team.
    I just thought I'd get peoples thoughts on it. All comments welcome !

    VAJ works just fine as long as you give it enough
    memory. But make sure you get training for your team,
    because its online help is almost totally useless.I would definitely agree with that. VAJ has a lot of nice features, but it also has a lot of things that can be really annoying, esp if you haven't had the training.
    My biggest annoyance with it is that I can't get my hands on the source code without exporting it. You can kind of work around this by using the source view, but the source view won't tell you where/if there are "doh!" type compile errors--you need to look at the workbench. And you can't see line numbers, so if you get a stack trace with a line number you can't just scroll to it. (You can hit CTRL-G to pop up a dialog to jump to it, though.)
    I also haven't gotten the PVCS integration to work right yet, which makes check out-edit-check in a hassle. It supposedly works, but when you're in a development mode it's hard to find time to play with your tools. =^p

    I know one software i.e java launcher to create a setup file.You should clearly identify what you think you already know.
    I want to know about any other softwares are available to create a setup file for java programs.
    I created a setup file for swings program in JCreator.Is this the one you talked before, or is this different?

  • How to create reports for java programs?

    Hi,
    I have planned to do a project using java,that will help to create reports for java programs. To create reports for java programs i used two options.
    1)Crystal reports
    2)Write the code to produce reports for each java programs
    The second one little cumbersome.SO i planned to develop a software that is compatible for creating java reports.
    I would like to know how i will do the project?Can you help me to made it a successful project.Hope you can help me.
    Expecting your reply
    PreethiRenjith

    Uggg... Crystal reports...
    I would personally write a generic report generator, It would probably be easier than fighting w/
    crystal reports (CR is popular, but painful :) )
    Anyhow, I've written report generators for many different applications. It is one of the simplest projects you
    can take on, and the results make you feel special --
    If your need nicely formated, portable, printable reports, you could have your report generator make PDF files (the format is open, and VERY simple, plus people like pdf files) you can get the pdf spec from adobe or from wotsit.org (the famous wotsit file format archive).
    enjoy!

  • Help need on System setup for java programming

    HELP BADLY NEEDED!
    I recently installed java (jdk version8 152mb) on my HP630 win7 because i want to learn java. But when practising, after using notepad to code samples like "Hello Word" and saving it with .java format, it still cannot run on my pc.
    Pls i think i need a complete and comprehensible guide on how to install and prepare my win7 laptop for java programming.
    Thanks in anticipation

    Hello,
       one suggestion is to ensure your system's environment PATH has the Java installation path included, so that it knows where to look to run Java.
     (See attached pix).
    1st) Find out where Java was installed to on your system: For example, on my Win7 PC, Java was installed to 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Java' directory.
          However, my path to the actual binaries is 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin'; this is the value I added to my system PATH.
    2nd) Check what your System's PATH has: You can do this by looking at the Environment Variables under System Properties:
       1) Search for Control Panel, then go to System & Security, then to System, then to 'Advanced System settings'.
       2) Click on 'Environment Variables...'
       3) Under the 'System variables' pane, use the scroll bar to find 'Path', and click on 'Edit...'.
       4) Here is where you add your Java path (as noted above): Note that I appended my java path to the existing Path text, taking care to separate the previous path with a semi-colon (';').
         For example, this was my existing 'Path': "C:\Program Files\CollabNet\"...and now it looks like this 'C:\Program Files\CollabNet\;C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin'.
       5) Click OK, OK, OK out of all those dialogs.
       Now..restart your JVM or attempt to run your Java program!.
     Good luck.

  • Setting persitent system environment variables using java program

    hai,
    Iam tryng to write installation for an application,which require to set some persistent system environment variables using java program. I have tried using set command Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd /c set blah blah "),but this applies only to that particular DOS promt only,i presume.And this is not perisistent.please do help.
    Biju

    The solution I proposed worked only on Windows XP/2003.
    The following solution will work on Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 with JDK 1.2+.
    1- Download the [url http://www.gjt.org/download/time/java/jnireg/registry-3.1.3.zip]JNIRegistry zipped archive.
    2- Open the registry-3.1.3.zip file and extract in the folder of your choice ( Eg. c:\setenv ) only the 2 first files (when sorted by path): ICE_JNIRegistry.dll and registry.jar.
    You don't need to keep the folder tree in the extraction.
    3- Create the following SetEnv.java file in the same folder ( Eg. c:\setenv ).
    import com.ice.jni.registry.Registry;
    import com.ice.jni.registry.RegistryKey;
    import com.ice.jni.registry.RegStringValue;
    import com.ice.jni.registry.RegistryValue;
    public class SetEnv
        static final String REG_HKLM_SUBKEY_NAME = "SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Session Manager\\Environment";
        public static void main(String[] args)
        throws Exception
            new SetEnv().exec(args);
        void exec(String[] args)
        throws Exception
            if (args.length != 2)
                throw new IllegalArgumentException("\n\nUsage: java SetEnv {varName} {varValue}\n\n");
            String varName = args[0];
            String varValue = args[1];
            RegistryKey key = null;
            RegStringValue value;
            try
                key = Registry.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.openSubKey(REG_HKLM_SUBKEY_NAME, RegistryKey.ACCESS_ALL);
                value = new RegStringValue(key, varName, RegistryValue.REG_EXPAND_SZ);
                value.setData(varValue);
                key.setValue(value);
                key.flushKey();
            finally
                try { key.closeKey(); }
                catch (Exception e) {}
    }4- Compile it.
    javac -classpath .;registry.jar SetEnv.java
    5- Run it. varName and varValue are strings of your choice.
    java -classpath .;registry.jar -Djava.library.path=. SetEnv varName varValue

  • Is there a way to set new default heap size for Java?

    Hi,
    I have a problem with setting global heap size for installed version of Java. By global I mean that every program that will be run using that version of Java, will be using that amount of memory. for heap. I know that I can use Xmx and Xms for each program that I start, but I don't want to do this. I just want to set some kind of property for installed version of Java.

    Launch Firefox and set the web page as wide as you want by dragging the hash marks at the lower right corner. Center the page on your screen where you want it. Then quit Firefox. launch Firefox again. The page should be just where on the screen and sized as you set it prior to quitting.

  • How to set the default maximum size for java's heap?

    Hi!
    Im trying to set the default max size for the java heap - but not from the command line.
    I would like to set it higher as default on my computer.. how can I do that?
    thanks!

    >
    ...You may increase the memory heap only when you're launching a new JVM.>Much like IWantToBeBig does.
    OTOH, it this is an app. with a GUI, it is easier to launch it using webstart, and request extra memory in the JNLP descriptor (the webstart launch file).

  • Textpad for Java Programming

    I was wondering if any of you guys also use or know TEXTPAD ? If yes, what do you guys think of it ? Does textpad good or suitable for writing and compiling codes for Java ?
    Thanks !

    Does it good, or no ?Yes, it's excellent. As a tool to use when learning Java it cannot be beaten, and subsequently it is still just great. I would encourage you to purchase a full licence.
    When you compile bigger
    programs, does textpad still works ?Sure. Although once you are very familiar with the tools of Java development (particularly javac and java) then you will probably want to pick up an IDE to use instead of Textpad. That won't stop Textpad from being useful.
    What are the
    disadvantages of it ?It's not an IDE, just a text editor with some programmer oriented features. That's also one of its advantages.
    And what do you usually use to
    write Java code ?For short examples I still use Textpad. For viewing code in an ad hoc manner, I still use Textpad. For writing large applications I use Eclipse 3.1M7 where possible and (usually) WebSphere Application Developer where not.
    Dave.

  • Plug-Ins for Java programs

    How to add plug-ins support to the java's programs? Plugins can be written in other than Java programming language.

    You can use the dynamic loading of classes to realise plugins.
    But if you take this method, the plugins must be written in java.

  • Need help for Java Programming asap plzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    Here is the work: (Im writing it coz I wasn't able to attach it)
    Introduction
    In geometry, a straight line is the shortest distance between two points.
    A line may be characterised by its end points and its length.
    A line connects the points P1 and P2.
    The point P1 has coordinates {X1,Y1}.
    The point P2 has coordinates {X2,Y2}.
    The length of the line joining P1 and P2 is given by the equation:
    { (X2 - X1)2 + (Y2 - Y1)2 }1/2
    Those of you who are familiar with geometry will recognise the equation as being the well known Pythagoras equation for the hypotenuse of right angled triangles.
    Requirements
    Develop a class specification for the class Point.
    Write a short test program and test plan for this class.
    For example:
    //pointTest.java
    main(...)
    Point P1;
    P1.create(24,16); // create a point with coordinates {24,16}
    P1.display(); // display the {X,Y} coordinates of P1
    Develop a class specification for the class Line.
    Write a short test program and test plan for this class.
    For example:
    //lineTest.java
    main(...)
    Point P1 = new Point();
    P1.create(24,16); // create a point with coordinates {24,16}
    Point P2 = new Point();
    P2.create(33,42); // create a point with coordinates {33,42}
    Line L1 = new Line();
    L1.create(P1,P2); // create a line using points P1 and P2
    System.out.println( L1.length() ); // display the length of line L1
    Line L2 = new Line();
    L2.create(12,30,28,16); // create a line using coordinates {12,30}, {28,16}
    L2.display(); // display the coordinates of both points and the length of the line
    Application
    We wish to determine the length of the boundary of any regular or irregular polygon .
    The polygon may have up to 6 sides.
    The user should be prompted to enter the number of sides and the coordinates of each vertex point.
    The program should then calculate and display the total length of the boundary.
    You should write an application to implement this using your Point and Line classes.
    What I should have at the end
    The following:
    ? A listing of the files Point.java, the class test program and results.
    ? A listing of the files Line.java, the class test program and results.
    ? The application program and results.
    Note 1: All code must be written in java.

    Point P1 = new Point();
    P1.create(24,16); // create a point with coordinates {24,16}That's a terrible idea. If that was actually in your requirements, then whoever wrote it should stop teaching Java right now.
    We have constructors to initialize objects with sensible, meaningful values. Creating a new Point object without any values and then calling a "create()" method to set the values is a pretty stupid approach. Not only does it ignore the usefulness of a constructor, it also ignores the convention that methods called "create" should actually create something (and not just set values).
