Setting file assoc. to my java app

Hello!
I created an XML editor in Java and I want to set it up as the default application when I double-click an XML file. I realize this is mostly a Windows XP question, but I've set up file associations before with no problems and yet for some reason the same steps aren't working when I try to associate a file extension to a .jar file (my Java app). So there seems to be something special about setting up a Java application like this, and thus I hoped somebody here would be able to shed some light.
Anyway, when I go the normal path of setting up the file association (Tools -> Folder Options -> browse to my app), Windows seems to take it fine, but when I double-click on an XML file it says "<filename.xml> is not a valid Win32 application." That seems strange to me because it's complaining about the XML file itself not being a valid app, rather than my XML Editor app that I actually pointed at that file extension.
So I tried using 'assoc' and 'ftype' in a DOS console:
C:\>assoc .xml=XMLFile
.xml=XMLFile
C:\>ftype XMLFile=C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\java -cp C:\JavaProjects\XMLEditor\dist\XMLEditor.jar %1
XMLFile=C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\java -cp C:\JavaProjects\XMLEditor\dist\XMLEditor.jar %1
But still, double-clicking an XML file causes the same Windows error message: "<filename.xml> is not a valid Win32 application."
Has anyone else tried to do this before and actually succeeded?
Thanks!

As this is a question about configuring windows, You may have more luck asking a windows forum.

    Thanks! I was mislead by the API notes for java.util.jar:

    I was looking for a class or method to make jar files.
    Seems this is it ;)

  • How do I set proxy settings for a Java app behind a corporate server?

    I have the source code of a Download Manager program written in Java. It has to be run within my college network in which we use the "Corporate Client" server to access the internet. Download.java: Contains Download class which downloads a file from a URL.
    DownloadManager.java: Contains the main class for download manager application.
    DownloadsTableModel.java: Contains the class which manages the download table's data.
    ProgressRenderer.java: Contains the class which is responsible to render a JProgressBar in a table cell.

    Thank you for the quick reply! But the solution provided by you, it seems, has still not been able to address my issue. I ran the program at command prompt with your said parameters, but the download still gave an error in the App window.
    Also, is there some way of defining these parameters in the source code? I am keen in using NetBeans to run the program.
    Cheers!

  • How to make file associations in my java apps

    I am making a Graph maker in Java. Just give x = 1,2,3,4,5 and corresponding y = f(x) and get the discreate graph.
    The graph can then be saved as a file of extention .grf (say) on the hard disk, and can be opened in my graph maker software for editing, viewing e.t.c.
    Now my problem is that I want that when I dubble click on a file xyz.grf my graph maker should open automatically with this file opened in it, like other applications on windows say Notepad - dubble click on xyz.txt it will automatically launch Notepade with this file.
    In other way I want that any .grf file gets associated to my graf maker.
    Please help me and tell me the way, how should I proceed and how can I do this.

    (a) There is a splash screen in my app. but JNLP always show its own splash screen, ...Webstart splash screens work differently to those of plain Jar files (which is unfortunate). A webstart splash screen has to be not included in the Jar, but available as a separate resource. The splash is defined in the JNLP launch file. For further details see the [JNLP File Syntax|http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/guide/jws/developersguide/syntax.html].
    <quote>
    The optional kind="splash" attribute may be used in an icon element to indicate that the image is to be used as a "splash" screen during the launch of an application. If the JNLP file does not contain an icon element with a kind="splash" attribute, but does contain another icon tag, Java Web Start will display a splash screen consisting of the image specified by the icon element on the left and the application's title and vendor on the right.
    The first time an application is launched following the addition or modification of the icon element in the JNLP file, the old splash image will still be displayed. The new splash image will appear on the second and subsequent launches of the application.
    </quote>
    The 'ignored first time' is because the webstart client is more focused on getting the app. downloaded, cached and launched, than showing splashes. Once the app. is on-screen, it will download the splash in the background.
    One other 'gotcha' of splash screens is that the JNLP file must define a href in the JNLP element for the splash to be used. The webstart client assumes that a JNLP with no href is dynamically generated, and will not be the same twice. Because of that it ignores the splash!
    Edit 1:
    Unfortunately, I do not have any direct examples of using splash screens A splash is usually on my 'To Do' list for projects, but it is a very low priority.

  • How to set default audio device for java apps on Linux?

    I would like to find a way to choose a particular (ALSA) audio device for java applications. How can this be done without reprogramming the application or changing the default ALSA device? I came across "sound.properties", but could not find any information how to use this file on an ALSA system.
    Thanks for any help, Mark

    Eugenia wrote:Well, it's still not good enough.
    We can't satisfy everyone. What you want is a corner case. For most people ALSA and dmix works appropriately, and that is what esd uses by default. We cannot document and automate every configuration possible. That's up to the users.
    However, if you don't want to restart gnome, try the below... I make a few assumptions, but even if they're wrong, they're hardly difficult to work around.
    Just copy the /etc/esd.conf to ~/.esd.conf, make your change, then do killall esd. Presumably gnome will restart esd, and it ought to read your local config. If it doesnt, start it yourself.
    Feel free to write a script that automates this, or document it on the wiki.
    I have to restart Gnome to get this thing working. Other OSes *automatically* can use an alternative device. But if I change ESD, I will have to restart Gnome, no?
    Well, if you try my suggestion above, no. You can restart esd yourself. And that's what all the other distros do, except with some fancy GUI.

  • Launch Java app through a bat file

    Hi,
    Because I have to launch my Java App through a batch file, I don't know if I can create a new java class to execute this bat file to launch my Java App? Is that gonna work?
    Henry.

    Yes I created a batch file and tested. If I execute my batch file, the java app will be lauched as expected.
    Here is my java class that execute my batch file
    import java.io.*;
    public class LaunchTest {
    public static void main(String args[])
    String cmd[] = new String[3];
    try
    String osName = System.getProperty("os.name" );
    //System will detect current operating system
    if( osName.equals( "Windows NT" ) || osName.equals( "Windows 2000" ) )
    cmd[0] = "cmd.exe" ;
    cmd[1] = "/C";
    cmd[2] = "c:\\Run.bat"; //Run.bat will set classpath and launch my java app
    else if( osName.equals( "Windows 95" ) || osName.equals( "Windows 98" ) )
    cmd[0] = "command.exe" ;
    cmd[1] = "/C";
    cmd[2] = "c:\\Run.bat";//Run.bat will set classpath and launch my java app
    Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
    //running the commands
    Process proc = rt.exec(cmd);
    // any error message?
    StreamGobbler errorGobbler = new
    StreamGobbler(proc.getErrorStream(), "ERROR");
    // kick them off
    errorGobbler.start();
                   // any error???
    int exitVal = proc.waitFor();
    catch (Throwable t)
    t.printStackTrace();
    System.out.println("error...");
    And here is my batch file
    @echo off
    set path=e:\jbuilder4\jdk1.3\bin
    set classpath=E:\JBuilder4\jdom-b7\jdom-b7\build\jdom.jar;E:\JBuilder4\jdom-b7\jdom-b7\lib\xerces.jar;.
    d:
    cd AutoTest\classes
    java FirmwareTestPack.FirmwareMainClass
    exit
    When I run the java class above, Dos prompt popped up for a second then disappeared. It did not launch my Firmware pplication.
    Thank you.

  • UTF-8 file encoding issues within Java?

    I'm working on an application that takes data from an IBM mainframe(z/OS), converts it from IBM-1047 encoding to UTF-8(via iconv utility) and binary FTP's it to a Unix box where we process the file with our Java app and return the processed file.
    Within our Java app on the Unix platform we stream the file into a byte array and then create a new String from the byte array specifying "UTF-8" as the encoding parameter.
    The problem is that Java appears to be taking certain 2 byte UTF-8 characters and converting them to a single char.
    E.g. I have a \uC3A6 char in the input file, I can view the bytes in the byte array that's read in, and it's still a \uC3A6, but as soon as I create the new String with UTF-8 encoding and view the bytes, those 2 bytes are now shown as a single byte(0xE6). The code I have that's looking for the char \uC3A6 then fails.
    Can anyone explain what's happening here?? Sorry for the long message.

    The encodings which convert the character (char)0xC3A6 to the 2-entry byte array {0xC3, 0xA6} (unsigned) are "UTF-16BE", "UnicodeBigUnmarked", and "UnicodeBig." These are essentially identical except for the use of byte-order mark. As was said above UTF-8 converts (char)0xC3A6 to the 3-entry byte array {0xEC, 0x8E, 0xA6} (unsigned).

  • "system cannot find the file specified" when launching a java app

    Hi,
    we are receiving an error message saying "The system cannot find the file specified" when launching a java app on a server. Exactly the same configuration on another server does not give the same problem.
    The dialog box with the error message only presents one button - OK - and after pressing the button the app continues to run normally. This however is a big problem for us as we are trying to convert the apps into system services using the wrapper (http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org).
    Note: the problem exibits itself with and without the use of the wrapper.
    I am not very comfortable about reinstalling the JRE on a production server. Is there any way to see what file it is missing? Debug options or something similar?
    The JRE in question is 1.4.2_06. Many thanks in advance for your answers.

    if not setting Post-Processing option results in a cryptic error why doesn't Adobe do one of at least three things?
    1. Don't let user click Export on Export dialog if nothing's selected for Post-Processing.
    2. Default Post-Processing to Do Nothing
    3. Give the user a hint as to what the problem is when the error occurs instead of issuing cryptic error message.
    Allowing this error to persist for so long is ridiculous.

  • How can I set up company ipads with preloaded apps and files?

    I want to set up multiple ipads with preloaded apps and files before handing them out to employees.  We intendend the employee to be able to install their own content on the device using their own itunes account.  When I attempted to connected to a pc using a personal account my the content obtained by the company account was prompted to be removed.  Was this done incorrectly?  Is there a way I can set up company ipads with preloaded apps and files so that they don't get removed when the user connects them to another computer with another itunes account?
    Right now we are looking to have the employee use their own itunes account and reimburse the expense for the needed apps, but this could be an issue if they leave the company and the device is reassigned.

    Yes this is possible. I've been using Apple Configurator to do this (you could also use iTunes to restore backups). The trick is, you need to tell the end user not to sync apps within his/her iTunes on his/her computer. You will need to instruct the end user to download apps OTA using the App Store on the iPad rather than with iTunes on his/her computer. If the user tries to sync apps on his/her computer, it will wipe out apps that you installed. However if the user downloads apps OTA, your apps and the user downloaded apps will both stay on the iPad.
    When you hand the iPad to the user, be sure to log out of your company Apple ID on the iPad at Settings -> Store and have them sign in with their personal Apple ID. That way it is all set for them to download apps under their own Apple ID.

  • What path to use to access network files from Java app running on Mac

    I have a Java app running on a Mac with OS X that I'm using to check for files that exists on Windows servers within our network.
    Using a path like /Volumes/<Share>/ works because I've already connected to the drive using Finder. If I try to use a fully qualify the path with "smb://<Server>/<Share>" then my app doesn't see anything. Is there any way that I can get Java to connect to a directory without first having mapped or made the connection via some external tool like Finder?
    Here's the code I'm testing with:
    package FileImports;
    import java.io.File;
    import java.util.Arrays;
    public class Dir {
    static int indentLevel = -1;
    static void listPath(File path) {
    File files[];
    indentLevel++;
    files = path.listFiles();
    if (!(files == null)){
    Arrays.sort(files);
    for (int i = 0, n = files.length; i < n; i++) {
    for (int indent = 0; indent < indentLevel; indent++) {
    System.out.print(" ");
    System.out.println(files.toString());
    if (files[i].isDirectory()) {
    listPath(files[i]);
    indentLevel--;
    } else System.out.println("Directory not accessible!");
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    // this path works where <share> = the directory where my files exist.
    listPath(new File("/Volumes/<share>"));
    // this path returns a null result in files
    // listPath(new File("smb://<Server>/<Share>/"));
    Thanks,
    Alex

    Thanks for the response. I'll have to dig a little deeper into JCIFS. It looks like it would work great windows to windows. I haven't been able to find in the documentation where it would work on OS X without having to mount the targeted file system first. Has anyone had success creating a connection to a windows file system from OS X with JCIFS?Since jCIFS is written in pure Java and implements the entire SMB/CIFS protocoll on it's own it doesn't require any support from the OS (apart from a normal JVM runnig). Thus it should work exactly the same in OS X and Windows (and Linux and Solaris and ...).

  • Opening a file from a java app (not applet)

    My program can't find the text file I'm trying to open in my stand-alone java app. I am specifying it like this:
    File filename = new File("myfile.txt");
    FileReader = new FileReader(filename);
    It is in the same directly as the class files. It won't find it when it's in a jar file either. I had a similar problem with an applet a lont time ago, but that turned out to be a security issue, which I assume normal apps don't have.
    So, what's up with this?

    If system become larger, there are duplicated files
    can be found in different directories.
    Using classpath may cause problem, if there are
    duplicated file name.
    If you are coding, you should know exact location of
    the file to be opened.
    "system become larger" - huh? You control the classpath on a per-app basis, not one huge monolithic classpath containing all jars/folders for all apps.
    It's common, well-designed practice to use the classpath. It's bad practice to hard-code directory names and expect all deployments of the app to follow the same directory naming convention. I wouldn't want you to dictate to me where to put the file on my hard drive. I should be able to install it anywhere I want, and let it find it (via the classpath, in this instance).

  • Drag and drop file onto java app

    Hi,
    I would like to drag and drop a file from windows explorer onto a panel in my java app.
    All I need is that when the file is 'dropped', I can get a reference to the path of file.
    e.g.
    There is a file, C:\myFile.txt
    There is a String in my program called 'filePath'.
    I start my java app and dnd the file onto it.
    I want the path of the file to be assigned to the filePath String.
    I can then do more proccessing on the file which I already know how to do.
    Can anyone help.
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Tristan,
    I am stuck in the same place. Perhaps we could work on this together.
    I am trying to drag a single item from a JList to a text editor, Word, etc. I have two problems:
    1) I can't seem to get just the item in the JList to drag. It wants to drag the entire JList component.
    2) How does one define the remote application as the drop target? Have not found any examples either.
    Is the drop target actually the system clipboard?

  • Set up DB Connection Pool for Oracle DataBase Using Java App Server8

    Hi,
    In the Admin Console of Java App Server 8, I tried to create a connection pool for the oracle database. I chose Resource Type to be "javax.sql.ConnectionPoolDataSource" and the Vendor is Oracle. So the Data Source Class Name is filled by the system to be "oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleConnectionPoolDataSource". Now, I set up the class path to point to the database driver class "sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver" and also the to the Data Source Class Name. Also I set up the JVM options in the console. Restart the server, and then try to ping to the database, but get the error:
    Operation 'pingConnectionPool' failed in 'resources' Config Mbean. Target exception message: Connection could not be allocated because: No suitable driver
    I don't understand what else I should do and why this error is coming?
    Please help me out.
    Thank you
    Regards,
    Sarah

    Hi,
    I've already solve the problem. I did the following:
    set the Url to be: jdbc:oracle:thin:@hostname:port:SID
    set username
    set password
    add oracle.jdbc.drivers.OracleDriver into the JVM options -Djdbc.drivers
    restart the server
    test the connection
    it works :)

    hi HasanOen
    u need to edit the manifest file in yr JAR file u can do this by using the following cammand or by making the batch file but make sure all the files are in same folder.
    first of all u need to make a text file like below
    /////////// first file name: "THIS.txt" /////////
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Created-By: java // whatever here
    Main-Class: PUT YOUR MAIN CLASS NAME HERE (like MAIN)
    //////////////////// BATCH FILE "RUN.bat" //////////////
    jar cmf This.txt App2.jar MANIFEST.mf com
    com is the folder where your all the class file are.
    now double click the run.bat file. this will edit yr manifest file.
    hope this should work for u
    Note : Make sure yr jar file, txt file, bat file, and yr classes folder is in the same folder(I mean at same level)
