Setting up a Network using Laptop and allocating a fixed ip to participant

I have been providing a network at work using my laptop to create the network. There is therefore no external router involved. One of my colleagues has a netbook and requires a fixed ip allocating to be able to consistently join a network. Apparently there is a bug in the OS for the netbook that makes this the most reliable solution. Can I do this?

I have a similar set of requirements that is up and running.
I have left my original NetGear router in place unchanged. It connects to the cable modem and it continues to serve as the DHCP server providing IP addresses etc to every one on the network. It also continues providing b/g wireless.... it wasn't broke so I didn't fix it ;<)
I added the TC and connected it's Ethernet WAN port to an ordinary Ethernet port on the Netgear Router. I configured TC as follows:
-Internet tab (in manual setup) of the AirPort Utility as follows:
Connect Using: Ethernet
Configure IPv4: Using DHCP (This confused me for a moment - it means get your IP stuff via DHCP - i.e. from the NetGear)
Ethernet WAN Port: Automatic (Default)
Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode) - this lets the Netgear assign all the IP addresses to everyone on the network)
-Airport Tab -> Wireless
Network Name: A different name (SSID) than the Netgear's SSID
Radio Mode: 802.11n only (5GHz)
Channel: Automatic
Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal with a password
Under Wireless Options - Check Create a closed network
I have some 10/100T devices wired to the Netgear which is only 10/100T.
The Gigabit devices are including the TC are connected together so that they can talk to each other at Gigabit rates.
I'm sure that there are other combinations that work, may work better, but this suits the way this house is laid out/ wired and the way we use our machines. For one I have chosen to not leave the TC on 24/7 - heat/power. The Netgear doesn't get warm at all and stays on 24/7. It also means for me that I can define both networks on the 802.11n capable machines can be wireless in the, for us, very unusual circumstance that the TC would be off when wireless access would be needed by these devices..
Hope this Helps.

  • Setting up "Guest" Network Using LRT214 and LAPN600

    Hello, First off I have little experience setting up networks beyond the standard single router/network approach. I would like to be able to setup a non-secured internet access (guest) via our LAPN600 and LRT214 for visitors laptops/phoness.  I see where there can be multiple SSIDs on the WAP and that they would be seperated from seeing other wireless connections; but would they not still have access to any wired devices connected to the LAN? I also see where I could configure a seperate VLAN on the router but am unsure of how to make that play with the WAP to have seperate networks.  Can the VLAN on the router have a separate subnet say 192.168.2.X (vs 192.168.1.X) that the WAP would still have access to?  Or do I have to provide a certain range of IP addresses on the same subnet for each VLAN? Thanks for any help or direction,Mike

    This can be done but is kind of tricky. You will probably have to reset the LAPN600 a couple of times due to configuration errors so best to do this with the LAPN600 at your desk. It's been awhile since I've done this so I'm going by memory. You need to enable VLAN support in the LAPN600 and VLAN 1 as it's untagged VLAN:  Then you need to create a VSSID that is tagged on your LRT VLAN for your guests:  In the LRT you need to have a port untagged for VLAN1 and tagged for the LAPN600 Guest VLAN that the LAPN600 is connected to or something to that effect. I will have to do some config testing later to confirm exact settings but this should be you started.

  • Setting up a small business network using mac and windows pcs

    Setting up a small business network using mac and windows??

    Ok that sounds great. What is your actual question as it relates to AirPort networking? Is it: Can I set up a wired/wireless network with an AirPort base station that support multiple Mac & PC clients? If so the answer is yes.
    If, instead, it is how to I configure an AirPort network to support a small business you will have to provide more details on both your networking & computing equipment in order for any of us to help you.

    I didn't try those. BUT. Equations from the MS Equation Editor are not "accepted", you have to save them as eps or pdf or something. My best option so far is MathType, and a plugin mt.editor lets you edit inside ID

  • How to set up internet connection to laptop and desktop?

    I have a modem connected to an old lynksis router. I have my desktop hooked in port 2 on the router and my laptop in port one..
    The desktop's  network map shows it connected to a switch(my router) and the switch to my laptop and the laptop to the internet..
    Thus I have internet connection on my desktop
    but my problem is that the network map on the laptop shows it connected to the switch and the switch to my desktop
    thus no internet connection..
    how do I connect the laptop to the internet as well as share files? I'm confused after fiddling around for an hour.

    Hello,
    First, are you using Wifi for Internet on the MBP?
    System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
    The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list, Wifi on the MBP.
    In Shating on both, enable File Sharing, Screen Sharing, & Web Sharing on both.
    Then with the Ethernet cable between the two, find the IPs of both, or use Finder>Go>Connect to Server>Browse... see what shows up.

    There is Apple's Remote app which will allow you to control iTunes on the computer. Remote will let you browse your iTunes Library and it's playlists as well as controlling the AirPlay speakers connected to it. This option would require you to pair up your Bluetooth speaker to your Mac.
    Another option is using Home Sharing. Once turned on and set up your iTunes Library on the Mac should be selectable in Music's Shared section on the iPad found by tapping the More button. Once loaded your iTunes Library is displayed on the iPad including the playlists. This method will play through the iPad to a Bluetooth speaker paired to it.
    Home Sharing works well although it can take some time to load up on the iPad depending on how big you library is. I prefer using Remote although I have Apple TVs and WiFi AirPlay speakers through out the house to stream content to.

  • Wireless Network Using Extreme and Express?

    I currently have a linksys Wireless G station and range expander that I am absolutely sick of and since I have a Powerbook and will eventually change my desktop to an iMac, I wanted to explore getting a similar set-up with Airport Extreme Base Station and extending the range with Airport Express. Is it as easy as I just made it sound? What am I missing here? Can Airport Express in fact act as a range expander? Do I have to plug it into a network cable or does it do it wirelessly like my Linksys range expander does? Sorry for all the newbie questions but I wanted to ask before I invest. Thanks to any and all.
    E

    Thanks, Don. To clarify, this means I can in fact create a network using a Base Station and a plug-in Express or should I use two Base Stations with one set up as a remote/relay and keep the Express for travel?
    It seems the configurations are limitless! Which I mean as a good thing.

  • Is there a way to create a virtual network using C# and the Azure SDK/API?

    I don't see a clear way to create an Azure Virtual Network using the SDK.
    I have all the methods to create the virtual network configuration, but no way to submit it:
    IList<string> VirtualNetworkAddressPrefixes = new List<string>();
    IList<string> LocalNetworkAddressPrefixes = new List<string>();
    IList<NetworkListResponse.DnsServer> DNSServers = new List<NetworkListResponse.DnsServer>();
    IList<NetworkListResponse.Subnet> Subnets = new List<NetworkListResponse.Subnet>();
    NetworkListResponse.Gateway Gateway = new NetworkListResponse.Gateway();
    IList<NetworkListResponse.LocalNetworkSite> LocalSites = new List<NetworkListResponse.LocalNetworkSite>();
    IList<NetworkListResponse.Connection> Connections = new List<NetworkListResponse.Connection>();
    VirtualNetworkAddressPrefixes.Add("a.b.c.d/cidr");
    DNSServers.Add(new NetworkListResponse.DnsServer() { Name = "TestDNS1", Address = "a.b.c.d" });
    Subnets.Add(new NetworkListResponse.Subnet() { Name = "Subnet-1", AddressPrefix = "a.b.c.d/cidr" });
    Subnets.Add(new NetworkListResponse.Subnet() { Name = "GatewaySubnet", AddressPrefix = "a.b.c.d/cidr" });
    Connections.Add(new NetworkListResponse.Connection() { Type = LocalNetworkConnectionType.IPSecurity });
    LocalNetworkAddressPrefixes.Add("a.b.c.d/cidr");
    LocalSites.Add(new NetworkListResponse.LocalNetworkSite()
    Name = "On-Prem",
    Connections = Connections,
    VpnGatewayAddress = "a.b.c.d",
    AddressSpace = new NetworkListResponse.AddressSpace() { AddressPrefixes = LocalNetworkAddressPrefixes }
    Gateway.Sites = LocalSites;
    Gateway.Profile = GatewayProfile.ExtraLarge;
    NetworkManagementClient netMgmtClient = new NetworkManagementClient(CloudCredentials);
    NetworkListResponse netlistresp = GlobalSettings.mainWindow.netMgmtClient.Networks.List();
    netlistresp.VirtualNetworkSites
    .Add(new NetworkListResponse.VirtualNetworkSite()
    Name = "TestVirtualNetwork",
    AddressSpace = new NetworkListResponse.AddressSpace() { AddressPrefixes = VirtualNetworkAddressPrefixes },
    DnsServers = DNSServers,
    Subnets = Subnets,
    AffinityGroup = "East US",
    Gateway = Gateway,
    Label = "LabelValue"
    I have also created the entire XML response and sent it to the NetworkManagementClient -> Networks.SetConfiguration() method, but it appears this command expects the virtual network to already be in existence. If anyone could give guidance, it would be
    appreciated.

    Hi,
    As discuss above , we have to create the XML response  ,before that first you have to
    GetConfiguration() details of existing virtual network.
    string.format("@<NetworkConfiguration xmlns:xsd='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema' xmlns:xsi='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance' xmlns='http://schemas.microsoft.com/ServiceHosting/2011/07/NetworkConfiguration'>
                <VirtualNetworkConfiguration>
                <Dns />
                <VirtualNetworkSites>
                <VirtualNetworkSite name=""{0}"" Location=""{1}"">

                <AddressPrefix>10.0.0.0/8</AddressPrefix>
                </AddressSpace>
                <Subnets>
                <Subnet name=""Subnet-2"">
                <AddressPrefix>10.0.0.0/11</AddressPrefix>
                </Subnet>
                </Subnets>
                </VirtualNetworkSite>",Networkname,location)+(@"<VirtualNetworkSite name=""demodsf1"" Location=""West Europe"">
            <AddressSpace>
              <AddressPrefix>10.0.0.0/8</AddressPrefix>
            </AddressSpace>
            <Subnets>
              <Subnet name=""Subnet-1"">
                <AddressPrefix>10.0.0.0/11</AddressPrefix>
              </Subnet>
            </Subnets>
          </VirtualNetworkSite>  </VirtualNetworkSites>
                </VirtualNetworkConfiguration>
                </NetworkConfiguration>")
    you have to append the node for existing node with new values , i got it its adding new virtual network

  • Best way to set up home network using Time Capsule

    Hi
    My current home network consists of Macbook Pro 17 connected wirelessly, another Mac and few pcs. I have a Time Capsule, new netgear router and several hard drives. At the moment my main drive is plugged in via usb to the mac, however id like to set up a proper mini network where i can at least share several drives between macs, HOWEVER i also want to back up this data via TC, which is why at the moment my hard drive is plugged into the mac, so it can be backed up. Am i correct is saying that TC will not backup netwrok drives?
    ..any suggestions for best way to set up a network with TC backing up drives?
    Thanks

    Yes.
    ..any suggestions for best way to set up a network with TC backing up drives?
    You could share the locally-connected drive.  That would require that your Mac be on whenever any other network client needed to access the drive.

  • Connect to workplace network - Using VPN and having trouble mapping to path

    I need to connect to a couple of drives on my workplace. I work remotely. I was able to create a VPN connection (via System Preferences > Network) with the info they provided. I connect and it shows the connection as being successful.
    However, I haven't been able to connect to a couple of directories. The paths they provided look something like this:
    \\ServerName\DirectoryName
    \\ServerName\users\UserName
    I tried the Go > Connect to server and typed it like this:
    smb://servername/directoryname
    But I haven't been able to connect. I get an error window that says:
    Connection Failed.
    The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again.
    What am I doing wrong?

    This is a very strange one, I had same issues and was able to fix it. Let’s see if the fix works for you.
    If SMB enabled on your Server.
    What I did was to change connection to smb://Server IP/ShareName
    Then connect and it all worked fine. The next time I connected to the Server I just connected the normal way i.e. just ServerName and ShareName using AFP and it all works fine now.
    See if this helps you.

  • How do I set up a network using time capsule

    I have a 2TB time capsule and an airport express, however I would like to move my capsule to another room where I want to connect 2pc's, which do not have wireless adapters and connect them via Ethernet to the capsule to allow them to go online. My printer is in this room currently connected to airport express to print wirelessly, but I want to put my airport back on my stereo.
    In addition I want to continue backing up my iMac, wirelessly, the problem i am experiencing is the time capsule needs to be connected to the router via Ethernet.
    Moving the capsule to the other roodoes too far, without a direct route to run Ethernet cable.
    Can this be done? Any help is very much appreciated.

    Hi Bob,
    I have an O2 router wireless box 5
    In short what I would like to acheive is;
    iMac - wireless connection, wireless printing, wireless back up to time capsule
    Time Capsule - conect to printer via usb and to connect 2 pcs via ethernet to use Internet and print
    Thanks for looking into it for me

  • Can I ask, if my wife and I have seperate profiles set up on a windows laptop and are currently using different libraries on iTunes, can we use the same library? It seems a terrible waste of space if there are artists we both want to listen too.

    Is this purely a copyright issue? For instance, I gifted her an iTunes album at christmas, so if we were to link to one library, I shouldn't be able to listen to this should I? I have about 160 albums in my library, and she has about 300 individual tracks in hers. Our tastes overlap, and music takes up space on my hard drive, so surely she should be able to link to my library too... or is this just a can of worms in waiting...

    You can share your libraries within the same household:

  • Do you set up 2 networks, 2.4 and 5?

    I been playing around with my TC setup and noticed using the air port utility app none of my devices (ipad, 4 x ATV, MB Pro, mini mac etc) was not connecting to the 5GHz network. (supposed to be better right??) So i selected the option to have the 5ghz visable and force the ATV's etc to 5ghz. Is this the best way or just leave alone and let the devices connect themselves at the best available? advice most welcome.
    cheers
    MC

    If you leave the TC in its default setting of using the same wireless network name for each band, then devices will automatically connect to the best signal quality.
    In general, capable devices will not connect to 5 GHz unless they are in the same room, or in very close proximity to the wireless router.  That's because 5 GHz signals are much weaker, and are easily absorbed by any obstructions in the signal path.
    So, forcing a device to connect to 5 GHz does not insure that it will have the best available connection. Depending on the location of the device, the 5 GHz connection may well be slower than the 2.4 GHz connection.
    In other words, 5 GHz is not necessarily "better". It all depends on a number of different factors.
    If you leave the  TC in the default settings, devices will automatically connect to the best signal quality depending on their capabilities and location in relation to the TC.
    After all, isn't that what you really want?

  • Joining a work network using wireless and proxy servers

    Hi,
    I have just arrived at a new work location, where we have an afterhours user network that we can connect to in our accommodation. I have had continual trouble trying to connect to the network, and have taken my MacBook to the geeks who provide the network. They can't fix the problem either (and are reluctant to as they don't like Mac's).
    The problem is exactly as follows:
    My airport instantly identifies the network. I need a password to connect to the network name, and this seems to work, but when I run the diagnostics it shows that the airport, airport settings and network settings are all green; but ISP, internet and server are red and failed.
    Next I click on advanced, and the geeks informed me that I need to set up a Web Proxy (HTTP), Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS), FTP Proxy and SOCKS Proxy. They have all been done correctly with the same login and password (which was provided by the geeks). Now they have watched me do this and tried themselves, and they tell me it is correct and has worked previously on other peoples Mac's this exact way.
    But for some reason after applying all this and even restarting the computer just incase, the ISP and onwards still fail to connect.

    The good news is that the basic roaming network setup is the same with the newer 6.x version of the AirPort Utility.
    Here are some step-by-step instructions using the 6.x version of the AirPort Utility.
    First, there are a few key elements to successfully configuring a roaming network, and they are:
    All of the base station must be interconnected by Ethernet. Note: You can use non-Apple routers in this type of network.
    All base stations must have unique Base Station Names.
    All base stations must use the same Radio Mode and Wireless Security Type/Password.
    Each base station should be on a different Radio Channel. Using "Automatic" works well here.
    All base stations, other than the "main" base station, must be reconfigured as a bridge.
    Let's start with the "main" base station. This will be the one directly connected to the Internet modem:
    AirPort Utility > Select the "main" base station > Edit
    Base Station tab > Base Station Name > Enter a unique name here
    Internet tab > Connect Using: DHCP
    Wireless tab > Network Mode: Create a wireless network > Wireless Network Name > Enter the desired name. This will be used on all base stations > Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal (recommended) > Wireless Password > Enter the desired wireless password. This will be used on all base stations.
    Network tab > Router Mode: DHCP and NAT
    Click on Update
    For each additional base station added to the roaming network:
    AirPort Utility > Select the appropriate base station > Edit
    Base Station tab > Base Station Name > Enter a unique name here
    Internet tab > Connect Using: DHCP
    Wireless tab > Network Mode: Create a wireless network > Wireless Network Name > Enter the desired name. This will be used on all base stations > Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal (recommended) > Wireless Password > Enter the desired wireless password. This will be used on all base stations.
    Network tab > Router Mode: Off (Bridge Mode)
    Click on Update

  • Best way to configure wireless network using AE and TC

    I am trying to tweek my wireless network so that it works a lot better/faster. Our house is two stories and is built of concrete so wireless signal does not transmit all that far. I currently possess a 2TB Time Capsule, one Airport Extreme and two Airport Express. I have recently been using the TC as the main base station and have it connected by ethernet cable to the port in the wall. I then expand the network through the 2 Express. I have available bandwidth of 16mbps but when working wirelessly the  best I seem to get is between 2 & 3mbps (download speed).
    I get signal but when looking through my set up manual I see that I should have a modem somewhere in this setup. I had thought that the TC acted as the modem but am I wrong?
    Would I be better to use the Extreme as the base station and boost the signal with the TC and the Express?
    Any suggestions gratefully received!

    Hi Tesserax, well I need help again. Here is my latest problem. I am still trying to sort out the internet connection in the bedroom. I am using an Airport Extreme as the base station, connecting it by ethernet to the wall socket and telling it to create a wireless network and put it in bridge mode.
    Result: I can see the AEBS in airport utilities and have plenty of signal but cannot actually get any connection to the internet. I know the cable works as I have been connecting it directly to the computer and have no problems.
    Also I have looked at my Settings - Network and I am showing that I have the following airport connection
    ThomsonBA55BD is connected to Lucy's Network and has the IP address 10.0.1.6
    I have no idea whose this connection is and thought it was maybe a connection from next door but it seems that I am showing this even when i am wirelessly connected downstairs. Not sure if it has always said this as can't remember when I last looked.
    Anyway, I am very frustrated as the bedroom connection used to work as described above until I started messing with it
