Setting Up RMAN

Dear Experts
I am new in Database field please help me out regarding RMAN
Please guide me how can I achieve this
One thing I want to ask is ............ Minimum how much Databases (servers) required to achieve this?
-----------> I have a Dell machine and Oracle 9i Database on it on Windows 2003 Server
-----------> I want to Impliment RMAN on it
Please any one send me a simple document through whic I achieve my goal?

thanks and regardsYou need only one database :) You don't need more than database to test RMAN
I'd suggest you to refer to the documentation
[Oracle9i Recovery Manager Quick Reference|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96564/toc.htm]
[Oracle9i Recovery Manager User's Guide|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96566/toc.htm]
As a first step, put the database in ARCHIVELOG mode, connect to RMAN and take your first backup as follows:
SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE
STARTUP MOUNT
ALTER DATABASE ARCHIVELOG
ALTER DATABASE OPEN Then connect to RMAN from OS
[code
C:\rman target /
RMAN>BACKUP DATABASE;
That's all. By following above steps, you'll take your first backup. Then, read the manuals I've posted and start practicing
Good Luck

  • Setting up rman backups - am I missing something?

    I have inherited an oracle 10g database on Windows and I need to set up RMAN backups. I am going through the steps and I think I am still missing something.
    I am trying to put the database in archivelog mode and it gives me this error:
    ORA-01126: database must be mounted in this instance and not open in any instance
    So I try to mount the database (alter database mount;) and it says:
    ORA-01100: database already mounted
    So I figure someone else has it open so I shut it down (shutdown immediate), which works fine, but when I try to restart it (startup mount;) it tells me:
    ORA-24324: service handle not initialized
    ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist
    So I try to log into a new session and it tells me:
    ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
    The only way I can find to restart it is to restart the service OracleServiceDATABASENAME. When it is restarted, it lets me log in, but then I get the same errors as above when I try to mount the database or put it in archivelog mode.
    Please let me know what I am missing.
    Thanks!

    Over Windows, database service has a vital role in the management of the database. Without it being started, you can't do anything with oracle db. Fro your error,
    >
    ORA-24324:
    service handle not initialized
    Cause:     An attempt was made to use an improper service context handle.
    Action:     Verify that the service context handle has all the parameters initialized prior to this call.>
    It may be possible that you have used an inappropriate service name to start teh database. The other error comes up when the datbase is either just started or is unaware about teh name being requested by teh client to get connected, due to wrong name being chosen or an unknown name being chosen.
    All this basically means that you may have either done typos or tried to start some service which was never there. The best way is to set Oracle sid using
    set oracle_sid=<your sid>And then do what ever you want to.

  • How to set the Rman backup parameter.

    Hi,
    Can U guide me how to set the Rman backup path,control file auto backup & others parameter.

    Hi,
    Go through this,
    Show all configurable settings:
    RMAN>SHOW ALL;
    Write disk backups to the /rmanback directory: (%U will be replaced with unique filenames)
    RMAN> CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '/rmanback/%U';
    Backup using a flash recovery area rather than disk
    RMAN> CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT CLEAR;
    Configure RMAN to back up the control file after each backup
    RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
    By default, RMAN automatically names control file backups and stores them in the flashrecovery area.
    To configure RMAN to write control file backups to the /backup directory:( %F will generate a unique filename)
    RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/backup/controlfile%F';
    Ensure that RMAN retains all backups needed to recover the database to any point in time in the last 7 days:
    RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 7 DAYS;
    Retain three backups of each datafile:
    RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 3;
    Delete backups no longer required by the retention policy:
    RMAN> DELETE OBSOLETE;
    To override the configured retention policy for individual backups - use BACKUP.. KEEP (or CHANGE.. KEEP)
    Configure backups to run in parallel by assigning two sbt channels:
    RMAN> CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE sbt PARALLELISM 2;
    Reset any CONFIGURE setting to its default by running the command with the CLEAR option
    RMAN> CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE sbt CLEAR;
    RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY CLEAR;

  • 11g CRS and ASM, 10.2.0.4 database, how to set up RMAN

    Hi all, I am fairly green when it comes to RAC so please bear with me. I have a Linux 2 node RAC environment. The servers are lux148 and lux149. The 2 node cluster is running 11g CRS and ASM. The database is 10.2.0.4. It had to be set up this way in order for IBM DataStage to work. The database name is fictrp0. The instances are fictrp01 (lux148) and fictrp02 (lux149). I am trying to register the database with an RMAN catalog. I am under the impression that I need to register the database (fictrp0) not the instances (fictrp01 and fictrp02) with the RMAN catalog. Is this correct? So I log into lux148 and set my environment so the ORACLE_SID=FICTRP0. From the command line I issue the following:
    fictrp0:/u01/app/oracle> rman target / catalog rman102/[email protected]
    The command returns the following:
    Recovery Manager: Release 10.2.0.4.0 - Production on Wed Oct 29 14:05:50 2008
    Copyright (c) 1982, 2007, Oracle. All rights reserved.
    connected to target database (not started)
    connected to recovery catalog database
    Is this normal "connected to target database (not started)"? I was expecting to see a DBID=FICTRP0 for the target. If this is typical, how will RMAN know the ID of the database? Should I be trying to register an instance perhaps such as FICTRP01? If so do I need to register both instances (FICTRP01 and FICTRP02)?
    Bottom line I am very confused on how RAC and RMAN work together. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    You no need to register the instance,You need to register only the database and database only will have DBID

  • Setting up RMAN -- Best Practice

    On the readings I've done regarding RMAN, I've seen recommendations that RMAN should have a recovery catalog configured, even though that's optional. Further, I've seen recommendations that RMAN's recovery catalog should have its own database.
    I've got one machine, that I want to run RMAN on, with the backups residing on that machine and disks. I then plan on archiving the backup files that RMAN produces to another set of cheaper, though less efficient, disks.
    What I thought I'd do in configuring an RMAN recovery catalog is create a separate tablespace for it, and store the RMAN schema there instead of creating a separate database on the same machine.
    It seems to me that unless you have an environment where you have one RMAN backing up multiple oracle instances, a separate RMAN database isn't justified.
    Comments?
    === Al

    hi,
    What I thought I'd do in configuring an RMAN recovery
    catalog is create a separate tablespace for it, and
    store the RMAN schema there instead of creating a
    separate database on the same machine.
    However if you just create a separate tablespace and you need to recover that database you will have major problems. If you are going to use the recovery catalog option then create a separate database ideally on a separate machine.
    It seems to me that unless you have an environment
    where you have one RMAN backing up multiple oracle
    instances, a separate RMAN database isn't justified.if you have just a couple of databases to manage then use RMAN controlfile backup.
    regards

  • Am i missing the most basic setting for RMAN in RAC?

    DB version: 10.2.0.4
    We've set up a 2 node RAC environment. Everything is working fine (failover,...etc).Each node can 'view' other node's archive log destination from OS level.

    Have you configured multiple Channels appropriately to connect to the two instances ?

  • How to get the size of the backed up datafile in a backup set with rman?

    Oracle 10gR2 and catalog is in place.
    Since RMAN only backups the used blocks(does not take backup from NEVER USED blocks), what can be the explanation of some extra space during backups?
    And also how to trace this space allocation by datafile with v$% - rc_% views or any rman command?
    Thank you, best regards.
    Tonguç

    Before 10G R2 rman does not backup never used blocks but it backs up blocks which have been previously used. So, dropping or truncating a table does not make the backup size smaller since the blocks of that segment are not "never used" anymore.
    Starting with 10G R2 a new feature named "unused block compression" comes into play. With this feature rman does not backup unused blocks (even if they have been used before). But it has some restrictions like: you need to backup to disk unless you are using Oracle Secure Backup, the datafile needs to be locally managed, etc...

    thanks
    buddhike

    Sigh. You wouldn't be willing to spend some time in the manuals, would you?
    RMAN actually consists of 2 parts:
    - the shell, which you invoke;
    - the rman procedure, which is inside the Oracle database kernel.
    Your request is sent to the kernel, and is executed by the kernel. Therefore the kernel must be running.
    If your database is in ARCHIVELOG mode, you can do a hot backup - simply go into RMAN and tell it to backup the database.
    However, if you are in NOARCHIVELOG mode, you must ensure that nothing can change in the database files. Therefore you can not have the database in the OPEN state.
    In the NOARCHIVELOG mode, you MUST shut down the database, then re-start it using STARTUP MOUNT. Then you can get RMAN to do it's backup, after which you can then ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
    The other advantage of ARCHIVELOG mode is that the database can be restored to virtually any point in time, whereas a NOARCHIVELOG database can ONLY be restored to the backup point in time.
    However, the advantage does come at a price - disk space for the archive logs which are used to reconstruct any point in time.

  • Error setting up RMAN

    Ok, I've installed 11g Enterprice to learn.

    Either the instructions in that book are incomplete or you have missed reading some of the instructions.
    The notation "'+DATA1'" signifies that the database should be talking to an ASM (AutomaticStorageManagement) instance for the DiskGroup called "DATA1". The expectation is that you have also configured and started an ASM Instance which has a DiskGroup called "DATA1" created.
    If you do not have ASM configured and running, you can create the tablespace datafile on the filesystem -- eg
    create tablespace rman datafile '/u01/oradata/MYDB/rman01.dbf' size 125M autoextend on ;

    I have done incomplete recovery of database to previous incarnation using autobackup controlfile with RMAN, opened database with resetlogs everything went fine. database is up and running. Now when i tried to take backup of the database i have received following error

    Sorry forgot to add some information.
    before recovery we were using recovery catalog which was on the same database.
    while doing recovery restored controlfile by
    RMAN> restore controlfile from '/oracle/oradata/envdvp/backup/controlfile/C-279496673-20080429-18';
    and then performed restore and recovery operation

    google found some questions, but not fittung answers.
    So far:
    - I checked the folder & users rights.
    - I found some /tmp/ files - yes I "backup" the backuped archivelogs to-delete files in /tmp - I only active archivelogmode so I can onlinebackup
    - I managed to login via rman and execute DELETE OBSOLETE manual - result above.
    - Actual I delete the set one by one to find the problem set. (delete backupset 12345 ) from the list manually.
    Some a good idea what went wrong?
    additional: Is there a way to let oracle delete the empy archvielog-directories after deleting the logs within?
    18:00- the command "RMAN> BACKUP CURRENT CONTROLFILE" also fails.

    Any chance to reset/kill that file?

  • Error using RMAN thru Database Control

    Hello guys..
    I installed Oracle 10gR2 on solaris 10, and created a sample DB called HEAT. This database is configured to run in Archivelog mode and also created Flash_recovery_area.
    Iam trying to take a simple backup thru RMAN using OEM ( Database Control). there is only 1 database on that server and i plan to use controlfile instead of recovery catalog.
    Now here are the steps when i execute, i get an ERROR.
    1. connected as 'sys' from Database Control.
    2. Went to Maintenence Tab, click in Backup settings.
    3. click on Device Tab, enter OS credentials and click on "Test disk backup"..
    4. I get an error that says "Disk Backup Test Failed!"
    When click on View Error Details :

    I only have 1 database , and it is configured to backup using Control file and not Recovery catalog ( which is the default)...
    What additional steps do i have to do, to take a simple backup using database control ? I am not sure why it says Database not available...while DB is indeed available and open.
    any help is appreciated..
    thanks

    I, too, am receiving these same errors when I do my backups. The sysadmin took the systems down over the weekend and the backup has failed ever since. Database is up, ORACLE_SID looks fine, what could be wrong? This nightly backup worked before system went down. I can connect as sysdba using the ORACLE_SID as set.
    Thanks,
    Candy
