Setup additional distribution point

Hi all,
Currently i have one SCCM server setup and it already has distribution point role installed. We have several branches with limited network bandwidth and file server for each of them.
My question is, is it possible to add more than one distribution point to one SCCM server and assign them to related branch? I am considering to set the file server on each branch as additional distribution point on the master "SCCM" server. How
can i achieve this?
Thanks.

It is not possible to add particular site system role in this case DP to multiple time for single server.
However it is possible to setup upto 100 distribution point & 2000 branch distribution point per site. you may use your branch file servers as distribution point/branch distribution point. please refer below link for more information.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb680869.aspx
you may set these new distribution points/branch distribution point as protected one, so only client from particular branch/remote office can access it.

  • Issue setting up PXE Enabled Distribution point for SCCM 2012.

I'm trying to set up SCCM 2012 in my Lab Enviroment in order to plan for implmentation to production.
I have installed and Configure one Primary site which has a working DP role width PXE /WDS.
And i am able to successfully do and OS Deployment.
I want to setup an additional Distribution point with PXE, to simulate a branch Office.
Installation of the second Distribution point looks to be succesfull, but i'm not able to boot on PXE.
It allways gives me the error messeage "The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a vaild OS entry
The same error messeage is given before i distributed the boot images (both x86 and x64)
So my thougts are that he WDS dosn't find the bootable images somehow.
I can see that the images are added to the RemoteInstall\SMSImages directory, but i also see the following in smsdpprov.log

Server is a clean installed Windows 2008 R2, only added to domain, added the primary SCCM server account as local Admin, added WDS Role and configured RemoteFolder before adding DP role from the SCCM Console. (So SCCM has installed and Configured IIS)

Looks like i have found the answer at least i have got it to work.
Once i install .Net Framework 3.5.1 Feature on the server, i was able to boot succesfully into SCCM Task Sequence Wizard.
I also was successfull installing the the PXE DP role from the console succesfully without having to install WDS first.
So i guess that .Net Framework 3.5.1 is required for PXE DP role on Windows 2008 R2. (but i can't see that mentioned anywhere here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/c1e93ef9-761f-4f60-8372-df9bf5009be0#BKMK_SiteSystemRolePrereqs)

  • R2 - Distribution Point not working properly

From my main SCCM R2 server, I went to add an additional server with multiple roles.
I can't tell if it's working properly, however.
For example, the Distribution Point role. I've set it as PXE boot, and our Cisco admin has setup an IP helper accordingly, but when I go to boot a client to PXE, it gets an error "Windows failed to start".
    File: \Tmp\x86x64{13902C6F-DD5F-4467-88C9-1BAC44DF8287}.bcd
    status: 0xc0000098
Info: The windows boot configuration data (BCD) file from the PXE server does not contain a valid operating system entry. Ensure that the server has boot images installed for this architecture.
From Boot Images on the main SCCM server, I had pushed them to the distribution point. Or so I thought? I mean, the "In Progress" tab says the distribution point server name I'm trying to push it to under the "Device" column. Then
Description reads "Distribution Manager Successfully processed package "Boot Image (x64)" (package ID = STL00005)".
But it's been sitting like that for over an hour...
WDS role is also installed on the DP I'm trying to PXE boot from.
Should I disable WDS and then what do I do in SCCM to get it to PXE boot and make sure the boot file for SCCM is on there?

    Nvm I got it up
I removed the WDS server but not the role of the DP in question
I then removed the roles from the server within SCCM console
Then added back only Distribution Point, then I was able to distribute the boot ups to it again, no errors in logs
PXE boot working fine with task sequences
This is what I ran into after getting PXE to not throw DHCP error

  • Using an ASA 5505 as a Certificate Authority and Distribution Point?

I had a question about the limitations of an ASA 5505 and using it as CA. The setup would be as follows:
2 ASA 5520's in set up for high availability failover.
1 ASA set up with a local CA server.
If I had to set up VPN to connect to an interface on the ASA 5520's and wanted to require certificates as a secondary authentication could they use an ASA 5505 as a CA to retrieve and verify stored certificates? The issue I ran in to was not being able to set up a local CA server on the failover pair and was hoping to use an ASA 5505 with a local CA server to act as a distribution point. I have been researching various configurations similar to this but have not found definitive information if it is even possible.
If someone could verify if this is even possible and / or point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Rick

You can only create self signed certificates using the ASA, or import a identity certificate from a 3rd party CA.  The ASA unfortunately can only issue user certificates to users or PCs via downloading from a website, they cannot complete CSR requests.

  • Distribution point certifcates

    Hi,
Currently I have 3 servers setup, 2 of which are just distribution points.  Can all three servers share the same PKI client certificate or should they each have their own PKI certificate which are exported from their cert store.
Another thing I noticed is that in Administration -> Security -> Certificates. Is there any way to remove the unused certificates (certificates that are marked Blocked under status)
    Thanks,

    Hi,
The answer might be no. And I haven’t seen an official document about how to remove the ‘Blocked’ certificates.

  • Configuring Failover Cluster Server Share as a Distribution Point

Hello and thanks for this helpful forum!
I am trying to configure a server share as a Distribution Point and am running into problems.  I am running SCCM R2 on Server 2008.  I am trying to use a clustered share coming from 2008 R2 Failover Cluster.
I have been trying to get this working for the better part of 2 days now, and I have successfully created a Distribution Point to another 2008 Server (non-R2) by simply using the site system (not the server share).
When I try to use the server share option, I keep receiving an error with Message ID 4701 stating that the SMS Site System Status Summarizer cannot access storage object
    \\servername\sharename$ on site system
    \\servername\sharename$
The operating system reported error 2147942467: The network name cannot be found.
The server share is defined as a site system as
    \\servername\sharename$
I am trying to create a "Packages" directory under it, so I'm using the option "Share the distribution folder" under the Data Access tab of the Package.
In addition, I have given local admin rights to the site server on both nodes of the cluster.  I have given the site server modify rights to the share and NTFS permissions.  I have given Authenticated Users Read access to the share and NTFS.
As I mentioned, I can take another server and define a Site System as a DP and everything will work properly.  I am still missing something though regarding using a Server Share.
Thanks so much in advance for your assistance.

    Hi,
    No DP on NLBs:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb735883.aspx
Yes, but that is NOT a failover file cluster. Is there a workaround? It seems silly to have to stand up an additional server for this. It also seems odd that the forthcoming version of SCCM would not have some support for failover clustering which was a HUGE
improvement over the previous clustering solutions from MS.Jeffrey S. Patton Assistant Director of IT School of Engineering Computing Services University of Kansas 1520 West 15th Street Lawrence, KS. 66045-7621

  • Cancel Distribution Point Reassignment Greyed Out

I executed a Reassign Distribution Point to a server and by default selected D$ as the share to copy to because all of our DP servers are setup on D: EXCEPT for this particular server which has D: as the CD-ROM and E: as the shared drive which is Also used
as a file share so changing the drive letter may not be the best option. With that being said, I would like to cancel the Distribution Point Reassignment and reconfigure the properties of this particular job to use E: as the share to copy to and re-run the
reassignment however the Cancel Distribution Point Reassignment is greyed out so it seems that I am unable to cancel this process and with a lot of time spent on researching I have not found a solution for this. Please help!

  • SCCM 2012 Distribution Point without IIS

Hello. My environment is SCCM 2012 SP1. I need to set up distribution points on several Windows Server 2003 machines. These machines have certain security requirements. One of which is no IIS. In SCCM 2007, I was able to create DPs without installing IIS.
This prevented the use of BITS extensions but was acceptable. I cannot seemed to do the same with SCCM 2012.
As a test, I performed three steps to test a DP without IIS on a Windows Server 2003 machine 1) Made the primary server a local administrator on the Windows Server 2003 machine, 2) Installed RDC using the msrdcoob_x86.exe file, 3) in the admin console, I
created a new site system server with the distribution point role. I did not check allow it to install IIS to install/configure during the setup. The distribution point reports a successful installation status but I get three errors when I try to distribute
a package. The first error message is Failed to create virtual directory on the defined share or volume of the distribution point. The second error is Distribution Manager failed to connect the the distribution point. The third error is Distribution Manager
failed to process package "Package Name". I know that installing IIS with BITS extensions and WebDav support would fix this problem. However, I would like to use the DP without IIS like I did in SCCM 2007.
Looking at the supported configurations, I see the below. This leads me to below that it is possible. Does anyone know if this is possible? If so, what I am missing in my steps.
With System Center 2012 Configuration Manager, the distribution point site system role does not require Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). When BITS is configured on the distribution point computer, BITS on the distribution
point computer is not used to facilitate the download of content by clients that use BITS

BITS is a client side technology and has nothing to do with the server side of a DP or IIS and thus is irrelevant.
WebDAV was built into the relevant components of ConfigMgr obviating the need for the Windows Server WebDAV component so that's not needed for 2012 at all and thus N/A.
Ultimately, no, this is not possible. IIS is required on a DP in ConfigMgr 2012. This is clearly listed at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682077.aspx#BKMK_SiteSystemRolePrereqs.

  • "Failed to connect to remote distribution point" on local machine

I have a new System Center 2012 R2 setup. I only have a single server with Configuration Manager, SQL, and Distribution Point all on the same machine.
The Configuration Manager Client Package is failing to load to the distribution point.

    Hi all,
How to setup in sccm 2012 r2 not to use some drives for Distribution point , because we have some drives has very low disk space it shows critical in site status .

Specify the preferred drive(s) during the configuration of the Distribution Point and place a file called
NO_SMS_ON_DRIVE.SMS on the other drive(s). This file will prevent ConfigMgr from using it to store any information.

  • SCCM 2012 - Change Distribution Point's Site System Properties Site Code

    Hello All,
I'm hoping someone can help me out. Here's what I have and here's what I'm trying to do.
    SCCM 2012 R1
Each of our offices has a Windows 7 SP1 Ent PC that is a distribution point for that office's 10-20 machines. A number of these offices and their DPs were setup prior to me setting up a number of Secondary Site Servers. So right now, these DPs' site codes
are the primary site server's. I'd like to change these to one of the Secondary Site Servers.
When I go to the Site System properties of one of these Win7 distribution points, the Site Code is grayed out.
So, the question is, how can I change one of these DPs' site codes?
Thanks in advance to whomever helps!!
    Bill

That's a strange reason for using Secondary Sites. How many clients are you managing? Have you good WAN links?

    you're probably getting 0 rows...
v_SystemResourceList.ServerName contains the netbios+domain name, while v_Gs_Logical_Disk.Netbios_Name0 only contains the netbios name (no domain), therefore the join doesn't find any matching rows...
    You need to trim the domain name from the field {LEFT(SRL.ServerName,CHARINDEX('.', SRL.ServerName)-1)}
    try this query instead:
    SELECT DISTINCT
    SYS.Name0 As 'Device'
    ,SRL.RoleName As 'Role'
    ,LD.DeviceID0 As 'Disk',LD.FreeSpace0,LD.Size0
    ,LD.FreeSpace0 * 100 / LD.Size0 As 'Free Disk Space'

    Join v_Gs_Logical_Disk As LD on SYS.ResourceId = LD.ResourceId
    Join v_SystemResourceList As SRL on SYS.Netbios_Name0 = LEFT(SRL.ServerName,CHARINDEX('.', SRL.ServerName)-1)
    WHERE
    LD.DriveType0 = 3
And SRL.RoleName = 'SMS Distribution Point'
Additionally, if you notice that the LD.FreeSpace0 field returns NULL, you need to enable the hardware Inventory collection of this information [ client settings > hardware inventory > Logical Disk (SMS_LogicalDisk) > Free Space (MB) ]... Then initiate
the hardware Inventory cycle action and it should show results...
I don't have this field inventoried, so I cannot confirm the accuracy of the query...

  • SCCM 2012 Distribution Point server in a workgroup as well as the clients

    HI,
It is possible to have a distribution point set up by SCCM 2012 R2 which resides in a workgroup to manage workgroup users.
Basically, SCCM 2012 R2 is setup within a domain and a forest, The clients in the workgroup resides in a DMZ. The server in the DMZ is also within the workgroup.
For some reasons, at this time, it is not possible to add the server to the Active Directory to push it the distribution point role and therefore managing thoses clients within the workgroup.
Is there a way to set up the distribution point role to a server in a workgroup?
    Thank you

  • Distribution Points properties changing permissions

    Hi everybody!
How can we use RBA to lock down branch's admins DP properties changing permission....?
Branch admin's could change PXE properties and etc.....Could we let them work with DP object only in read mode?
In their role permission properties there are only "Read" and "Copy to DP" mark above "Distribution Point" object, but they still could change assigned to their scope DP's properties((

You've got to remove the Modify permission on the Site
object. In case you do want them to be able to modify other site settings, you can also create an additional scope configured to the specific distribution point. Then combine that scope and the role with less permissions on the site object together
on the administrative user and you achieved your goal.

  • Server 2012 Distribution Point - Is BITS Required ?

    Hi All,
I have deployed a Distribution Point on Server 2012, i went through the documentation and there was no mention of BITS being a prerequsite...
So my Question is - Do we still need to install BITS as a prereq for the Distribution Point Role on a Server 2012 box.
    Cheers

There still seems to be some contradictions on whether you are supposed to install BITS or not when setting up a Distribution Point.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712264.aspx under the section
"To install Internet Information Services (IIS) on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 computers"
clearly shows for Windows Server 2008 R2, select the
Background Intelligent Transfer Services (BITS) check box.
If you look at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682077.aspx#BKMK_SiteSystemRolePrereqs under the Distribution Point prerequisites, there
is no mention of installing BITS unless we are to assume the statement "You can use the default IIS configuration" means to select BITS as described above?
Plus the following note under Additional prerequisites is as clear as mud.
    Note
With System Center 2012 Configuration Manager, the distribution point site system role does not require Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). When BITS is configured on the distribution point computer, BITS on the distribution point
computer is not used to facilitate the download of content by clients that use BITS.
Most of us understand the client facilitates the BITS downloads but is there still a need for the
BITS Server Extensions and the only way to get those on a Server 2008 R2 box is to select the
Background Intelligent Transfer Services (BITS) check box?
