Setup airport express 1st gen

Hello there,
I have the first Airport Express, 1st generation and since 10.8 I needed to use the old version of airport utility (ver 5.6) to configure it, since the Airport Utility version 6.3.2 doesn't suport it (shame).
But now, after upgrading to Mavericks not even the 5.6 is working anymore.
How do I access and configure my perfectly functional Airport Express then?
Is it only me with the feeling that Macs nowdays looks more and more like Windows??

Apple sold a version of the AirPort Express long before they introduced what is known as a 1st Generation model, so as you might imagine, there is a great deal of confusion about which version of the Express is which.
Please look on the side of the AirPort Express that you have and post back with the Model No that you see there so we will know exactly what you have.
In order to configure the Expess to "extend" the wireless network provided by the TG582n device that you have, you will need to know 3 things about the wireless network that the TG582n device provides.
1) Wireless network name
2) Wireless network password
3) Exact settings for wireless security
Most users know 1) and 2) regarding their wireless network, but you will also need to know 3) to be able to configure the Expess to work correctly with your network.  If you do not know exactly what type of wireless security the TB582n is using, it will not be possible to configure the Express with the correct settings.
In that case, you will need to be able to access the settings of the TB582n to find out what exact setting that it is using for the wireless security on the network.
What version of AirPort Utility will you be using to configure the Express?  If you are not sure, open AirPort Utility and click on the AirPort Utility menu at the upper left corner of the screen and then click About AirPort Utility.  Post back with that version number.

  • Setup airport express (1st gen) as range extender wired

    So here's the situation.
I have a 1st gen airport express, and I want to use it as a range extender for my wireless network (uses a technicolor TG582n).
I am planning on connecting the airport express with ethernet cable to the remote location where I would like it to be a range extender.
I also want it to be an airplay speaker for the computer connected to the router.
I know I can only configure this device with an old version of Airport Utility, but aside from that I cannot get this to work.
Does anyone know if it is possible, and how I would go about doing it?
    Many thanks

  • Apple TV 3rd Gen no longer sees Airport Express 1st gen in Airplay after update

Apple TV 3rd gen was connected to AirPort Express 1st gen via WiFi, drove a video device via HDMI
and sent audio to the AirPort using Airplay and selecting the AirPort Express under Speakers.
I could adjust the volume with the AppleTV remote.
Apple TV was stored unused for a while.
After powering on yesterday, I ran the update.
Now Apple TV is connected to the Airport Express via WiFi
but Airport Express doesn't show in AirPlay settings.
I can still use AirPlay from my MacBook running Snow Leopard.
There are no updates available for the AirPort

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • Airport Express 1st Gen dropping Time Capsule 4th Gen when being used to extend signal

I have an older Airport Express 1st Gen and recently purchased a Time Capsule 4th Gen.  The firmware for both products is updated to the latest version.  When I set up the Airport Express to extend the signal for the Time Capsule, it works great at first, connects and the status light turns green. But after a while, the AE drops the "extension" and the light goes amber.  I have also heard this is a problem from a Macintosh expert at the Genius Bar.  Has anyone solved this problem?

Try using a wireless name that is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric on the TC.. I would even set different names for 2.4ghz and 5ghz..
So for example.. TC24ghz and TC5ghz meet our requirement.
Use WPA2 Personal security not wpa-wpa2 as that leads to issues.
Use password that is 10-20 characters pure alphanumeric.. can be mixed upper and lower case plus numerials.
Fix the wireless channel of the TC..
Now see if it makes a stable extend..
Always remember the Express must not be so far away the signal is poor.. it should get good signal itself so it can repeat to the other clients.

  • Airport Express 1st gen A1264 can't be seen in Airport Utility 6.3.2 in OS X 10.10.2

I have acquired a 1st gen 802.11n airport express base station and I am trying to set it up through Airport utility but no matter what I try It won't recognize the device. I am using a 2014 MBP w retina display, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, won't be get picked up on my iPad Air 2 either.

Power up the AirPort Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 10 seconds, then release
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light status
On your MBP, click the WiFi icon at the top of the screen
Look for a listing of New AirPort Base Station
Click on AirPort Express to start the setup wizard
If you are using an iPad, tap Settings on the Home Screen
    Tap WiFi
Look for a setting of Setup a New Base Station
Tap on AirPort Express to start the setup wizard
If you have already tried this a few times, and the AirPort Express does not appear, then the AirPort Express is defective.

  • Problem with Airport Express (1st gen) and Mavericks?

    Hello,
I still have an older 1st gen Airport Express (model A1264) and now with Mavericks it isn't working at all. The Airport Utility app on my Mac can't even find or connect with it. The same with the iOS app. It worked fine before. I can't even update the firmware (either no download available or other available downloads are too old and won't install). Is there a solution or do I need to update my whole device?
    Thanks,
    Paul

As a last resort, try a factory default reset on the AirPort Express as follows:
    Power off the AirPort Express
    Wait a minute
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for another 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light status
On an iPhone or iPad home screen....
    Tap Settings
    Tap WiFi
Look for a heading of Setup a New AirPort Base Station. If it appears.....
Tap on AirPort Express just below the heading to start the configuration process on the Express again
If you try several factory default resets, and the AirPort Express does not appear under the heading of Setup a New AirPort Base Station, the Express most likely is defective and will need to be replaced.

  • Can I use Airport Express (1st gen.) as a wired access point to my wifi Network

    Guys
    I'm using 10.8.4 with the older 6.3 airport utility. I have a Airport Express A1084 (1st. Gen).
I'm trying to use it, connected to my wireless network, but have a wired ethernet cable from the Airport Express connected to a device. I tried connecting via wire to another laptop to access the web and it doesn't work.
Any ideas if I can even do this, or do I just buy a new Express Airport. I just want to extend the network using my wireless to a wired device, but don't want to run a cable, because of the distance.
    Thank you
    John

Bob, I hope you can help me too.  I have 4th generation (? - the flat, square model that was recently replaced) Time Capsule/Airport that I bought to extend my Verizon DSL dry loop modem/wireless signal througout the house and to the guest house.  I now know that it cannot be achieved due to Apple negligence in informing customers that the capsule will only extend from another apple airport product.
    My question:
Should I connect it via ethernet to my DSL modem and create a new network, but use the SAME network name, passcodes, etc?  Will that Strengthen my existing wireless signal or will both machines butt heads and duke it out, so to speak?
B/C, I did have two separate networks going for about a year, different names for each network, and suddenly, the wireless part of the Verizon DSL modem died, and Verizon replaced the entire modem with the Actiontec modem.  So I am concerned that reconnecting the Time Capsule/Airport may damage teh Verizon modem, if that is why just the wireless part of the previous modem failed.
Suffice it to say, am very disappointed in the Time Capsule/Airport.  It replaced an older, bigger Western Digital external hard drive that was so easy to use and reliable; am still using it, but it has no wireless signal boost capability, so I purchased the Time Capsule/Airport.
    Thank you for your help.

  • Why can't iTunes for Windows see airport express 1st Gen

I have a 1st Generation Airport Express that was working prior to the most recent update of iTunes for Windows 7-64bit.  The device is located on an access point router.  My PC is conneced to a 2nd Access Point Router. I have tried multiple configurations of the AE with no success.  I even tried installing on the the same access point as the PC with no luck.  I have also tried connecting with the Firewall disabled and added itunes.exe to the list of programs ignored by my security software.
The Airport Utility can find the AE and I use Airfoil to stream to the AE for other applications and it works just fine.  Even with iTunes.  I'm listening to iTunes using Airfoil to the AE as I type this.
The more I use iTunes the more I hate it.  My iPad and iPhone cannot use the Remote app to connect to iTunes either so I am sure its all related.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated:
Below is a more detailed explanation of my network.
Primary Internet rounter/modem is for uVerse.
3 secondary routers configured as access points - 1 Linksys WNDR3700, 1 Cisco AE4200, and 1 Cisco AE4500 (all on different floors).
The AE4500 is connected to the uVerse Router
The AE4200 and WNDR3700 ares connected to the AE4500
The Airport Express is connected via ethernet with no wireless to the AE4500.
I need a network genius to figure this out!

    Seems to be working now.

  • Airport Express (1st gen) and BT Infinity

I've just upgraded to BT Infinity and am trying to connect my 1st generation Airport Express to the Openreach modem in place of the BT HomeHub 3.
I'm connecting over PPPoE using username: [email protected], and a space for the password and I've entered the primary and secondary DNS server details from the BT HomeHub. However, the AE won't connect to the internet and reports a PPPoE error.
I've connected my MacBook Pro directly to the modem and these settings work fine. Likewise, I've tried this with the latest generation Airport Express and it works fine too. However, because of where the modem connections are in my apartment I would really like to use the 1st generation AE plugged directly into the wall (it's just a lot tidier).
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Or is the 1st generation Airport Express incompatible?

These are the settings in my AE, you may just want to check they are all set...
    Airport Utility/Select Device/Edit
    Internet Tab
    PPPoE
    Account Name [email protected]
one blank space (tap spacebar!) for password
    Service Name - Your choice
    Disconnect if Idle - Never
Primary DNS - leave blank for BT DNS Servers or enter others manually (OpenDNS, Google DNS etc)
Secondary DNS - same as above
Wireless - If using Wireless, ensure you use WPA2 Personal (others can effect security/speed)
NetworkRouter Mode - DHCP and NAT
Tick Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol

  • Data rate slows over time: Using Time Capsule (4th) and AirPort Express (1st)

Time Capsule using Airport Express to extend network.
Over 3-4 days my data rate gradually gets slower and slower until I have to reboot both TC and AE.
Fresh reboot gets me 10Mbs or better for a while and then slows over time to 2Mbs or less.
I can cable directly to the ISP modem, taking TC and AE out of the equation, and its smokin fast
No hair left to pull out, so any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Wireless Security:  WPA2
    Channel:  11 (Automatic)
Mac Address Access Control: Not Enabled

You have your wireless channels on auto.. it is usually better to control it.
You will notice I have different names for 2.4ghz and 5ghz.. then I can force the link to either band.
After you set Radio Channel selection to Manual,, click edit. You can then set the channels.
Lock the channels.. ie you take control and you set what the wireless channels will be.. when you extend wireless this works far better. The auto channel system has to run on the Extender.. but since the main base is fixed on the 2.4ghz so it will be also.. the only channel that can flap around is 5ghz (extender) since that is not under my control. Of course it is up to you to determine which channel works best.. I strongly recommend the upper channels for 2.4ghz and the lower channels for 5ghz.
So.. I have set 5ghz to 48 on the main base.. and the auto channel sets it to 149 in the extender.
One strange thing results from my setup .. (amongst many!!)
You cannot name the wireless for 5ghz in the extender.. so in my case the upstairs wireless extender has both 2.4ghz and 5ghz named TC24ghz.. nought that I can do about it. But it is not a big deal.
You can see the result in the wireless diagnostics. The last wireless I have put in the box.. it is named TC24ghz but is in fact running on 5ghz. That is just how the over automated system of the apple routers work.. If I could I would fix it.. and maybe shall via serial console at a later date.

  • Config: Airport Basestation(1st gen w/802.11b) + Airport Express + Xbox

This is the motherload ? for Config./Setup Question:
    Airport Baestation(1st gen w/ 802.11b only) + Airport Express + Xbox
(Pertaining to: Network Settings, WDS, Airport Admin Utility)
    Network setups (2 possible configurations):
    1).Cable Modem ->(WAN)-> Airport BaseStation <-(LAN) -> Lynx Switch -> MacG4(OS 10.3.3) + XBOX using an Airport Express
    2).Cable Modem ->(WAN)-> Airport BaseStation <-(LAN) -> Lynx Switch -> MacG4(OS 10.3.3) + XBOX using a Logitech Play Link Wireless Network Bridge
*note with both of these configs. I have only been successful sending my XBox a signal using setup # 2. w/ the Logitech Play Link Wireless Network Bridge.
    To this point: (MacG4)
I have installed Amaryllis & Kaid for Mac OS X, & followed the Amaryllis Readme Doc.
I have followed the XLink Quick Start Guide & everthing is a go.
    To this point: (Network/Airport Configs.)
I factory reset my AE & ran the AE Assistance. I was able to “Set up a new Airport Express”, & see my AE in the Airport Admin Utility, at that point I got a solid green connection.
    Problem:
However, I was only able to do this when prompted “What would you like to do with your Airport Express” if I chose “Connect to my current network”, but at this point if I were to enable(check) the “Extend the range of my Airport wirless network”, & from my understanding this has to be done. I am not able to finish the setup, I get an error right after I enter in my basestation password.
    Possible contributing factors to problem:
My password for both my Airport Basestation & Airport Express are the same.
    > BaseStation Config. using Airport Admin Utility
    1).Internet(tab) >connecting using DHCP.
2).Network(tab) > Distribute IP addresses > I have “Share a single IP address (using DHCP and NAT) enabled, instead of “Share a range of IP addresses (using only DHCP).
3).WDS(tab) > can’t enable WDS and keep settings active. (i.e. I can enable them, but if I close out & return they are disabled.
Airport Express Config. using Airport Admin Utility
1).Airport(tab) > Wireless Mode: “Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
2).Internet(tab) > Connecting using: “Wireless Network”, and Airport(WDS) is grayed out.
The only other thing I am curious if it might be causing some issues with my BaseStation is:
If you navigate to: System Preferences > Sharing > Internet(tab), my internet sharing is turned Off. I noticed a grayed out “Airport Options”, that might become active if I enable Internet Sharing and choose a port to share my connection.
*I didn’t do this becuase I got the warning “If you turn on this port, your Internet Service provider might terminate service to prevent you disrupting it’s network…yada yada..
With all that said, I would be extremely appreciative if someone could drop some serious knowledge on me...

    Dual 1Ghz G4 2GigsRAM Mac OS X (10.3.3) Airport Baestation(1st gen w/ 802.11b only) + Airport Express

To extend the range of a wireless network you need WDS and to use WDS you need two Airports:
AirPort Express and all AirPort Extreme base stations can use WDS. Earlier AirPort base stations can't.

  • Cannot configure my AirPort Express (1st generation) anymore. Am using AirPort Utility 5.4.2 Setup Assistant. What do I do wrong?

I cannot configure my AirPort Express (1st generation) as base Station anymore. I had to reset it because I lost my password.
I first tried my IPads (IOS 6). These returned the message: Your AirPort Express cannot be configured with this software. Go to apple.com/nl/support/airport for more information.
As it is an old one, I have downloaded the eldest available AirPort Utility I could find on the Apple site (AirPort utility 5.4.2) to my computer. I ran the AirPort Setup Assistant wireless and the assistant found my AirPort named " Apple Network XXXXX". (I notes that the Assistant also returned the message: If this is not the AirPort Extreme you want to set up ...)
    I clicked <NEXT>
After trying to connect to Network, I received the message: Cannot connect to network or there are no AirPort base stations on the network.
To be sure I retried running the Assistant after connecting the computer and the AirPort using an ethernet cable. The error message was the same.
    What do I do wrong?
Am I using the wrong Utility software? If so, which version do I have to download and from where?
Is a first generation AirPort anyhow compatible wth 4the generation IPads or shoud I just buy a new AirPort.
I hope someone can help me...

Ok, thanks for clarifying that for me. You are correct. Your iOS devices will NOT be able to administer the 802.11g base stations because the version of the AirPort Utility that they use is incompatible.
For Windows XP, AirPort Utility for Windows v5.5.3 should work. However, v5.4.2 that you have should work as well.
Your XP computer needs to connect to the AirPort's wireless network BEFORE you can access the AirPort with the AirPort Utility. You may want to try connecting your computer directly to the AirPort using an Ethernet cable.

How can I use Airport Express (1st Generation) with OS X Mavericks?

1st Generation AirPort Express will work fine with Mavericks.
Are you sure that you have a 1st Gen Express?
Check the model number on the side of the Express. 1st Gen is A1264.
If you see A1084 or A1088, these are much older versions of the Express that were sold long before Apple began to use the Generation naming with "n" wireless devices in 2007.
Mavericks will not support the A1084 or A1088. Use another Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC if you need to administer the older Express.

  • Downgrading Airport Express 2nd gen. to 7.6.1

    Hi there,
I've just acquired another Airport Express today, 2nd gen., replacing a 1st gen. (n draft version) because of dual-band capabilities. Like other people, I have trouble with firmware 7.6.4 when playing music over AirPlay and optical to external DAC (see e.g. https://discussions.apple.com/message/19806591). I hear frequent high-pitch high-volume glitches, which ruins the listening experience. My 1st gen. could downgrade to 7.6.1 through AirPort Utility, but I can't do that with the 2nd gen. The message is "The selected firmware file is not compatible with this AirPort base station." I got the file as detailed on this site: http://www.laszlopusztai.net/2013/02/11/downgrading-airport-extreme-to-7-6-1/ (I tried all of them called 7.6.1.)
TL;DR: Is there any way to downgrade AirPort Express 2nd gen. to firmware version 7.6.1 so that optical out to a DAC works again?
    Thanks!

    Tks for the info.
I read tons and tons of posts here... have the same problem : can't downgrade from 7.6.3 to 7.6.1 because my airport express has been shipped with the 7.6.3 firmware version (how lucky ! ;-(
And no way to manually install the 7.6.1 binary as well (found here : http://www.laszlopusztai.net/2013/02/11/downgrading-airport-extreme-to-7-6-1/ see comments) when using the option key (option "Other").The install failed.
So, no solution at all ?? This is crazy !

  • How do I setup Airport express with ethernet connection to my modem?

Hi there - hoping to get some helpg as I'm having challnges setting up my Airport express via ethernet cable connection directly to my router.  It will setup wirelessly no problem, but I occasionally get dropouts when streaming music and I'm hoping to remedy that with a direct cable connection.  I know I have to change some settings in my airport utility, but haven't had any luck getting it right.
Here is my setups if it helps:

    Macbook Air, running 10.8.5
    Airport utility version 6.3.1

Unfortunately, you are getting incorrect advice here. Might be a good idea to start a new post, since the original thread is long out of date.
First, please confirm that you have a compatible Express with the AirPort Extreme. This would be either the current A1392 version.....or the previous A1264 version.
Next, we need to confirm "how' you want to extend, since you do not mention this in your post.
Are you planning to "extend" by connecting the AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet connection (highly recommended).....or.....are you trying to "extend" by having the Express try to connect wirelessly to the AirPort Extreme?
