Several users with the same login/Customize

This may seem a stupid question. But
I have several users login ,by department rather than creating hundreds and grouping them.
Then on the reports I have created I have put quite a lot of customizable options. I have not given them the save button on the customize page, however as I thought this would effect the defaults for other users logging in with the same login.
However I am finding that even without this if they customize a report. Then another person logs in they pick up the changes they have made. Is there a way to stop this?

If I understand it right, you basically are having several users log into one account, this should never be done, especially in OLTP environments or even OLAP where the data is sensitive. You'll have the issue you described (standard features break or don't work as expected), limit your auditing options (the database and the provider can't tell who did what all the time), increase complexity of user management (when user A no longer needs access, how can you deny him/her access without effecting those that still need access), limits development of new features (method is non-standard) and generally causes security head-aches (auditing, user management complexity, etc.). Users are not expensive objects (sessions are but you'll have as many either way).

Why do I see multiple users with the same name as an output of "users"

Recently, I found a peculiar thing when I typed "users" in the terminal. There were three users with the same name. After restart(power went down) I now see only one user there. Is this normal and why it can be happening? Why are there duplicate users sometimes?

Oh there is another option on mine besides "Run command as a login shell" called "Update login records when command is launched" I have them both disabled. Check for a second option maybe.

2 Users with the same name/shortname on the same machine

What will happen if:
There is a local user called Bob and a network user on a server called Bob? Before you even post anything, please let me know if you have actually SEEN this before. I know something will happen, I just don't know what. Again, 2 different users with the same name. YES it is possible to create, but I have not tested it yet. One home is on the local machine and the other is a network home directory. I didn't post this in the server section for this reason...the question is about a client machine running 10.5.4 not server, so it belongs here! Thanks to all who help and my guess is a dialog box pops up with a choice of network or local? Not sure, but it is going to be quite an interesting topic.

Thank you both. It seems I need to test this because it doesn't seem anyone has ever run into this situation. The first thing I need to ask is will it do any damage to the system files if a user logs in with the same resolving name?I know I know the UIDs are different, but maybe have the same shortname? Not sure if it will work. The network users authenticate via LDAP and the server is set to an Open Directory Master. Now as for the client machine:
#1 - If I create both test users (local and network), will I be able to set the network as a Mobile Home Directory even though there is an existing home folder for the local user?
#2 - I want one specific user to have the same login name and password, but a different login "reaction" when the user logs in depending on the location. For example, I have a current network user Bob, password 1234 who is logged in and connected to the server. He finishes working on his project at the office and then goes home for the day. When he gets home, I want his to be able to login with the user name Bob, connecting to the local account on his machine. I DO NOT want to user PHDs, but rather have two separate home folders for the same resolving login user name! I know it is a lot to ask for but, here is my next question...
#3 - If I create two different home folders for the same resolving name, but they are accessed in two different locations, one with a server LDAP authentication and one locally (127.0.0.1), will it work?

One User gets error Message saving an Incident, another user with the same rigthts not

We have a user sometimes getting an error message (see beyond) when saving an Incdient eg. only modified the descrition field. The user is able to create, update and resolve all other incidents. The user also may have changed this incident before.
When we use an other user with the same rigths, this user is allowed to modify the description field (and others)
We tested: The behavoir does not change for the first user, after the second user changed something.
It's not the workflow for the first assigned to date
No other user tries to use this incidents
We have a custom field, but it is not used in this case (so I know Romans SQL

There are multiple users with the same display name

Hi,
We have a user and when she get an item assigned to her she sees the following alert:
"There are multiple users with the same display name USERNAME and at least one of them does not have read permissions to some of the files"
Now I looked in the database and when I run the following query with the username:

Then I get 2 same usernames back, How can I get rid of one of them ? When I access TFS trough the portal I only find 1 occurence of this user.

Two computers and two users with the same name. Can't copy files anymore...

Hi all, after a user migration to my new iMac I had to make a change of the shortname. I knew it was not a good idea but had no choice otherwise I had to wait other 3 hours to migrate data again...
Anyway, I managed to change my shortname with success, but one strange thing happened afterwards... I have two macs networked, both have an admin user with the same shortname/real name, 'gillo' (I followed the procedure in one of these two, the Intel iMac. The other, a Powerbook, was not modified).
While previously I had no problems in copying files from the user 'gillo' on the Powerbook TO the user 'gillo' on the iMac, after the shortname change I'm not anymore able to do it. The error I get is:
"The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items"
Doesn't matter where I put the files, Desktop, Documents, even the Drop Box, I always get the same error.
I went through some checks and this is the 'log':
- The files/folders in the iMac 'gillo' directory are not locked.
- The files can be copied without troubles to the dirs of another admin user
- Permissions are the same as the other admin user and owner/group are the correct ones.
- Both Macs have 10.4.6
- The 'gillo' user on the iMac can copy files FROM the user 'gillo' on the Powerbook.
- I repaired permissions and the hard disk booting from the install DVD.
- I tried to change permissions of the directories (such as Desktop) on the iMac 'gillo' user allowing everybody to read/write. Also a no go.
Anybody went through this already? Or maybe something similar not directly related to the short name change?

Actually, everyone missed one point, when a device is priced, the cost of icloud storage space for that device is also included in it that is why they are able to give you 5gb each for each user ID, in nutshell there is nothing free coming with apple device purchase, it is paid for. What they are trying by giving only 5gb per user ID irrespective of the number of devices used is pure broadlight looting, they take money from you when you buy each device and give you nothing, This is a case of goods and services bought but not fully deliverd ie apple can be suied for discreminatory treatment towards it's users. I wonder why no one tried this yet in America where everyone sue everyone for petty things..... there is no one to take up this issue? . if tim got any love for the guys who shell out money for the devices his company makes, he should be implimenting this as priority before someone wake up from sleep and sue him.

What's the problem with having multiple users with the same UID?

I've got three edit systems connected to the SAN using open directory off our server.
I want all edit systems to have read/write access to everything created. I don't need to protect anything from any of the systems. With all three systems logged on using the same user, I never have to change permissions.
The other cool thing about this is that Final Cut Pro will let me know if someone else is modifying a project that I have open with the warning:
“The project "projectName" has been modified externally. If another user is working on it, saving will overwrite their changes. Do you still want to save?”
This sounds great, right?

So why is it bad to have two (or more) users with the same UID?
I can see that in some situations it means that you can't prevent people from read/write privileges. But I don't want to restrict privileges.
What am I missing? With all of these warnings, it seems like if I do this my edit systems could all explode or something. Please help me understand the potential ramifications of having three users have the same UID.

1) If you have OD set up and "editor" has UID 1111, then when they log in to any machine that's bound to OD as editor, they will get UID 1111. Therefore, there won't be any of these permission errors. This is typically the recommended approach.
2) I assume you mean "You'd prefer to not using open directory?" Whatever the case, OD isn't mandatory with Xsan -- it's just that with multiple user accounts, managing them centrally tends to be easier. For 3 or 4 accounts and 3 or 4 machines maybe it's no big deal. If you go larger, it could get a lot more complicated. That said, if you set it up such that each machine has the exact same set of users (as you said, Mary = UID 502, Fred = UID 503, William = UID 504), then you can do what you want. Mary can log in from multiple machines at the same time, and in general you won't have permissions problems. Of course, if you try and read and write the same file from multiple workstations at the same time, you will get file locking issues, which will prohibit somebody from successfully writing the file.
File locking issues are different from general permissions errors. The former basically says "hey, someone else is editing this file. Therefore I won't let you edit it right now... you can read it if you want though." Permissions means somebody saves it, and Xsan thinks you saved it and own the file, when you really don't.

You are on the 3.6 release and Firefox 7.0.1 is out. You can download and install the latest release from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ if you would like to update now. The 3.6 version will be maintained for a while longer, but you should update when you can.

Hi Sameer, indeed your issue seems to be linked to PDS creation. Your PDS CIF jobs must be failing if I am not wrong.
You would need to identify which PDS in APO (or which version in R/3) has issues.
Go to CQ transaction mentioned earlier, select teh row containing the issue, and then click on the display icon on the right side top. This will show you the entries in the internal tables taht were being passed on in the CIF.
From here, you need to identify the production version from R/3 that is having issue. I don't have a stuck queue at hand, so can't tell you which table would contain information. Somewhere you would find out the name of the product/location that is having issue, and then you need to check what is the issue with the version. Seems the same mode is being used multiple times in some activity, or in R/3 side, the same resource is being used multiple times in a single activity.

Multiple users with the same work number - fouling up UM Name Lookups

Background: We are using Lync 2013 and Exchange 2013, both on premise. Our users in the same building all share a common LineURI with a unique extension (i.e. +12085551212;ext=23105). Our UM automated attendant shares the same LineURI scheme (+12085551212;ext=23000).
Here is my issue: Some of our users are putting their work number and extension in the Active Directory Telephone Number field in the format "(208) 555-1212 ext 23105). When they do this it fouls up the UM name lookup process when they use a PSTN number
to call out and back in to another extension in our dial plan. The missed call notification or voicemail now shows the name of one of the users that input their own telephone number, such as "Joe Smith"; it no longer shows the name of the building,
such as "Pocatello High School".
My question: Is there any way to specify an override that all numbers coming in to UM from +12085551212 resolve to a specific active directory object, or even specify a name that it will resolve to? Open to any suggestions.

I appear to have solved my own issue. I supplied the following values in the msExchUMCallingLineIDs field:

2085551212
That solved the issue. UM appears to be searching those values before it moves on the the Telephone Number field.

Sharing Itunes Library with several users on the same computer

Hi,
I'm trying to share the iTunes library on a SP2 system. I placed the Itunes folder on a partition and setted iTunes to use this folder in each user account but...
When one add musics to the library, thoses musics are not visible once switched to another user account.
How to really share the same library with several user accounts one the same machine ?

Note that Otto42's post is from March 2006. This is way before iTunes 7, which allows you to move the iTunes folder.
His steps will work but are much too involved and unneeded.
Rather than using TweakUI (and possibly messing up something), just move the entire iTunes folder to a shared directory and hold Shift when starting iTunes, then select Choose library and go to the iTunes folder.
All changes made by any user will be to all users.
Note that only one user at a time will be able to access iTunes.

My Firefox opens to a completely blank screen with no menu bars or anything. I've uninstalled & reinstalled several times with the same problem. Help!

I opened it this morning with no problems, went to my g-mail account, pulled up an e-mail, clicked to reply, typed my respons, but when I hit send, everything went completely blank.
I have no tabs, no menu bars... nothing but the firefox logo on the top left corner and the minimize, full screen/small screen, and close/x buttons on the top left corner... that's it.
I uninstalled and reinstalled several times, but nothing works.
What now?

You say "could you see if you have the same addons installed." How do I do that, when I can't get it to open with anything but a blank screen?
I added Ghosery and Ad Block Plus... and also something similar to Ghosery, but I can't rememeber the name. I added that first... before Ghosery.
Anyway... if I completely uninstalled and then reinstalled, wouldn't I have to reinstall the add ons later?
And I did run a scan of my system with security software... it didn't find anything.
However, when I uninstalled, it uses a Firefox Uninstall Wizard... and in the wizard, there is an option to "Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations," but when you check that, it says, "This will permanently remove your bookmarks, saved passwords, cookies and customizations. You may wish to keep this information if you plan on installing another version of Firefox in the future."
I don't save passwords, don't care about the cookies, but the bookmarks took forever to collect, and I don't want to loose them.
Anyway to save or copy the more important bookmarks somewhere else?
Would clicking this option also remove the addons... and maybe that might take care of the possible malware problems that you're talking about?
