Shared applications among user profiles?

My wife and I have separate user profiles for our home computer. When I upload photos she can not access them from iPhoto unless she is logged in to my profile. The same is true for me if she uploads photos.
Is there a way for us to have a universal or shared applications (at this time, specifically iPhoto) across multiple profiles?

What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. The problem here is that OS X works very hard to keep your data safe and secure from the other users. You're trying to beat what's built in to the system. So, to beat the system
Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
Lastly: This method seems a little clunky at first, but works very well. Most importantly, it uses the System to do the job for you.
Create a new Account on your Mac, call it Media. Create an iPhoto Library there. (BTW: This will work for iTunes too.)
Enable Sharing on the Library:(Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other accounts. In those accounts, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. The Library will appear in the other source pane.
This means that both users will be able to see the pics. If you want to use a pic then simply drag it from the shared Library to your own in the iPhoto Window. This means that each user can have their own edits.
If you want to add photos to the Library: Log into the Media account for that purpose.
To make it all seamless: Set your Mac to log into the Media Account automatically. Set iPhoto to launch on log-in. Then switch to your own account using Fast User Switching.
Net result: a Library that's permanently available to all users but also protected. Each user can have their own versions of the pics if they want.
No partitioning, no permissions issues. Uses no extra disk space. What's not to like?

  • Sharing Music files on the same Mac among user profiles

    How can I share music among user profiles on the same Mac? I have an itunes account for me but I don't want my kids to have one yet. So, I want to download music but then share some music files for their itunes on their profile. The Home sharing feature only discusses sharing among different computers on the same network.

  • Photo Sharing in Separate User Profiles

  • Use Sparse Bundle Disk Image for sharing library among users?

    Apple's knowledge base article HT1198 (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198) on sharing iphoto libraries among multiple users on the same Macintosh describes using a sparse disk image in the /users/Shared/ directory. For a Mac that uses a Time Capsule for Time Machine backups won't this require the entire iPhoto library to be backed up anytime a picture is added or modified?
    Would using a sparse bundle disk image instead work better?
    Also, HT1198 doesn't say anything about "Partitions" parameter setting in Disk Utility when creating a blank sparse image or sparse bundle disk image. Does it matter what setting is selected if the image is being kept on the Mac internal disk drive?
    Is there any difference between iPhoto '08 or iPhoto '09 when attempting sharing the iPhoto library among users?

    I believe it may require the entire bundle to be backed up. You'd best ask that question in the Time Machine forum. They would know more about the ins and outs of TM there.
    If you can afford an external FW hard drive that would be the best option by far. No worry about filling up the sparse bundle, and you could use the external HD as a work platform to help keep a minimum of 20 GB of free space on your boot drive for optimal performance of system and applications.

  • How to troubleshoot failing applications or user profiles

    Hi,
    I have a very curious issue. I am running Adobe Lightroom 3.3 64 bit mode for quite some time now.
    However two days ago it fails to startup, and although it doesn't use a lot of processing power (activity monitor), my laptop is very slow and almost unresponsive when it happens.
    Running Lightroom in 32 bit mode is fine, but also running it when logged in as another user in both 32 and 64 bit mode goes well.
    I have also ran Mac OS X 10.6.5. in 32 and 64 bit mode, but the same issue here.
    So I suspect the issue has something to do with my user, and not with the application itself.
    How can I troubleshoot my userprofile?
    Hope someone can help me out!
    Kind regards,
    Roeland

    Thanks again baltwo!
    Here's how I did it:
    1. I copied the whole Library/Preferences file of my corrupted user id to my new user id (in which I had confirmed everything worked. (To make sure it has something to do with the preference files.)
    Result: Lightroom won't start in 64 bit mode.
    2. I copied the clean preferences list back to my clean user profile (LR3 worked again in 64bit) and only copied the "dirty" Lightroom 3 plist files to my new userid preferences folder.
    Result: Lightroom3 did not work anymore in 64 bit mode. So it had to be in de Lightroom preferences.
    3. I started with my "dirty" LR3 preference file in 32 bit mode.
    I started searching for errors.
    First of course in the 3rd party plugins. I noticed that all my third party plugins were installed but not running. So removed all corrupted plugins and voila! It runs again in 64 bit mode.
    So now I redownload the plugins and install them one by one.
    Still running ok!
    Probably something has corrupted my plugins directory, not sure what that could be. Except that I'm synchronizing a higher level directory including this one, so maybe that is it.
    Thanks everyone for the help!

  • Sharing apps among users

    can we share applications on a mac between users

    Most applications are already shared between users.  They're located in the common system applications directory.

  • JSP sharing session among users

    Hey all,
    I got a simple but important problem to pass by you all.
    :-) I wrote an intranet application using jsp and servlets. The issue I found is at login, the userid displayed is from a prior session. For example, I login in the morning and then leave. Another user logs in in the afternoon and sees the userid field with my userid.
    I thought I would keep the value of the userid for each user, but it seems the server is keeping the session. I store the userid in a hash table and then store it in a HttpSession and pass the hash table around (much like a context). I thought HttpSession was unique for every user, so I figured GC would take out the prior session along with the data contained in it. Any ideas?
    I am in QA now and hope to be implemented by Tuesday. What I did to clear out the userid field was to remove the code that preloads that field from the session. It works, but it concerns me that maybe other data might be shared.
    Thanks,
    Patrick

    Session's are not shared across users. Actually
    sessions are mainitained by a variety of ways and one
    of the ways is cookies in the browser.
    If i understand you right , this problems occurs in
    the same machine and may be same instance of the
    browser.
    You might need to do the following...........
    1) Make the settings in your app server so that the
    session expires after some time. The session should
    not be active for ever.=== The session does time out after 30 minutes.
    2) Second is that have a login page and in that page
    always clean the session variable.=== I get the session from request.getSession(). Do === you call invalidate() on the HttPSession object to === initialize it or just session = null?
    3) Further make sure that none of the variable you use
    in the JSP is in application scope ie
    <%!
    int session_id
    %>
    In this example this variable is in application scope
    outside the jspservice function. And since the
    servlet(ie jsp) is called in multiple threads , you
    will get into the whole issue of synchronization and
    stuff. So be care about this scope ...
    === I know I don't use session ids. I see the need for === them, but not in the scope of this app.
    I think this would solve the problem.Thanks,
    Patrick

  • Sharing applications between users on the same machine

    I am new to the world of MAc OSX, I bought my mac to run a specific application, No problem there, However that application needs to be accessed via multiple users on the same machine. So far I have created the user logons, But each user gets a new iteration of the same application. How can I make one copy of the application together with all its data base files accesible my other users, Also when the user that owns the application logs off...the application is terminated... I have set up fast switching...as a work around so the application will stay up, but Other users cant see it...Help please

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    However that application needs to be accessed via multiple users on the same machine.
    If the app is in the HD/Applications folder, all users can access it and use it. Then it doesn't matter of the other users are logged on or off. It's not a different iteration, there is no duplication.
    To share the data: as Kappy says, put it in the Users/Shared folder. Each user can see into another user's Shared Folder.
    Here's a question: if each user has to use the same app plus the same data, why have different accounts? The whole point of different accounts is to keep data separate?

  • Sharing pics among Users on same computer

    I want to share the pictures on our MacBook between my wife and me. Each of us has a User account on this machine. I have stored the pictures in the Shared Folder, and would like to reference the pictures from each of our User accounts using iPhoto. However, IPhoto was set to the management default, so it duplicated all the pictures, and they now exist both in Shared and in My Pictures.
    I need advice: am I trying too hard to be efficient by having the pictures in only one place? Should we go ahead and duplicate everything - it seems wasteful, and has the potential for confusion. What do you think?
    Thanks, S

    Two Problems and two solutions:
    I have stored the pictures in the Shared Folder... iPhoto was set to the management default, so it duplicated all the pictures,
    Chuck away the ones in the Shared Folder - put them in the trash. Just don't empty it yet, until you're sure that the Library does indeed contain all the Photos.
    would like to reference the pictures from each of our User accounts using iPhoto
    For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
    (You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
    In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location.

  • Sharing Applications between User Accounts

    Have just bought a new iMac having used windows based PC's etc....QU: I recently installed MSN Messenger whenlogged in as me (Administrator) however my wife created a USer Account and she had to re-instal MSN Messenger as it had disappeared from the box at the bottom of the screen. I am concerned that there are two applications installed where there only need be one?
    iMAC

    Just to expand a little on what Terence said in his post (since you are a new Mac user)...
    There are two places (normally) where you store your applications (although the Mac doesn't really care where you put them. There are also THREE Library folders (if you weren't confused enough, but the first one inside the System folder should not be modified in any way).
    The first, and most preferred location to store apps, is in the Applications folder on the top level of your hard drive (represented as /Applications).
    The second location, for users who do not want to share their apps with other users on their machine, is in the user's own home directory (represented as /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Applications).
    Normally, most applications are automatically stored in the first location (neither of my machines even have an Applications folder in my user folder - maybe because I am the only user of the machines). I am sure, though, there are some installer programs that might want to install its application in the user's home folder instead of the top level apps folder (MSN perhaps being one of them), so long story short, you should be aware of where you install your apps, so that other users can also use them.
    Cheers, and welcome to the Mac family!

  • Initiall SharePoint Server 2013 setup -- unable to manage new User Profile Service Application

    During initial farm setup, creating an initial User Profile Service Application works fine.  However, once it's created, I cannot 'manage' it through the Manage Service Applications page in central
    admin.
    I get a generic error (Sorry, something went wrong / unexpected error) with a correlation ID that doesn't seem to match any ULS log entries. (Yes, I merged logs from all machines in the farm.)
    A Windows event log entry says:
    A failure was reported when trying to invoke a service application: Endpoint Failure
    Also frequent errors in ULS logs:  (see below)
    UserProfileApplicationNotAvailableException
    User Profile Application      Proxy failed to retrieve partitions from User Profile Application: Micro…
    SPDistributedCache DataCacheException
    I did notice that the file 'ProfileService.svc does not exist in SharePoint's web services app at the URL you see in the error. (below)
    I also found it interesting that the event log error shows 1 active endpoint and 3 failed endpoints.  I have 2 WFEs and 2 app servers.  But I'm only trying to get the user profile service app running on the application
    servers.  I have deleted and recreated this service app several times under various names (deleted/recreated its app pool as well) and wonder if these other failed endpoints could be orphans from previous instances...
    Any thoughts on how I might successfully create this service application?  I've already been Binging my head against a wall long enough that I would have been better off reinstalling the entire farm...  I may still
    do that.
    FYI, my farm came from a slipstreamed SP1 install package, and received the July CU after several other things were already configured, including the already-failed UP service application.

    Wanting to upgrade my 2007 24" iMac, I replaced the HDD with a SSD and did a fresh install of Mt Lion. The goal is to transfer applications and usere profiles back to the iMac from the old drive. I want to keep personal files (doc, pix, ect) on the old drive that is connect via USB in an external case. Can this be done.
    I do not have a backup of the drive either. Can I do this now that it is in a box?
    Thank you for your support.
    Tom D.

    You can use Migration Assistant to move all the stuff to the new Mac. Don't create any user accounts, just let Migration Assistant do that by itself. Just point MA to the attached drive.
    I'm not sure what you mean by keeping personal files on the old drive.
    They will remain there after the migration, but the documents will be copied to the new computer.
    If you want to set up the Home folders to to the external, then I can't help. There is no way to use Migration assistant to set up the users, but not transfer data. It can just transfer Applications, though. Sometimes, I think it is better to reinstall those from scratch, too.
    The only way I could see doing that would be to just transfer applications, set up  all new accounts, then use the Users & Groups System Prefs to set the Home folder to the external. Again, I don't know how to do this properly.

  • Sharing XML packages among users

    Hello all,
    I have a question about the installation of the Oracle XML packages and sharing them among users.
    Our DBA thought it might be best to create a special user (user1) and install all of the XML packages, utilities under that user schema. We went this route and were trying to use that users's xml objects with another user (user2).
    When trying to generate XML output from SQL using the xmlgen package as user2 we get the following error.
    SQL> set serveroutput on size 1000000
    SQL> DECLARE
    2 v_query VARCHAR2(200) := 'SELECT ''monkey'' AS Animal FROM dual';
    3 BEGIN
    4 DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(DBMS_LOB.SUBSTR(xmlgen.getXML(v_query), 250, 1));
    5 END;
    6 /
    DECLARE
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-29532: Java call terminated by uncaught Java exception: java.util.MissingResourceException:
    can't find resource for oracle.xml.sql.mesg.XSUMessages_en_US
    ORA-06512: at "SXXML.XMLGEN", line 465
    ORA-06512: at "SXXML.XMLGEN", line 456
    ORA-06512: at line 4
    However running that same anonymous PL/SQL block as user1 we get success:
    SQL> set serveroutput on size 1000000
    SQL> DECLARE
    2 v_query VARCHAR2(200) := 'SELECT ''monkey'' AS Animal FROM dual';
    3 BEGIN
    4 DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(DBMS_LOB.SUBSTR(sxxml.xmlgen.getXML(v_query), 250, 1));
    5 END;
    6 /
    <?xml version = '1.0'?>
    <ROWSET>
    <ROW num="1">
    <ANIMAL>monkey</ANIMAL>
    </ROW>
    </ROWSET>
    So I have several questions:
    1> What is the best way to install these XML packages so that all users can use these utilities?
    2> What access privileges need to be granted to user2 so that user1 AML utilities are available?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Bediako George

    Thanks for the quick reply Steve: I have an observation and a couple of questions.
    First my observation. I looked for the java resource that "turned up missing" as far as my user2 user is concerned and I couldn't find it in sxxml's schema. ( I was logged in as sxxml). I attempted to create a wrapper package belonging to sxxml sxhema as I understood. However even after granting execute privilege to my second user I got the same message.
    Finally I removed the authid as current_user tag from the package declaration and I was able to get it to work.
    I am not comfortable with this solution and would like to get this set up the right way. You said my second option was to grant execute privilege on the missing Java resource to my second user.
    How do I locate this "missing" Java resource?
    How do I grant execute privilege to a Java resource?
    What are the ramifications of solving the problem the way I did?
    Thanks again for your help.
    Regards,
    Bediako
    create or replace package xmlgen AUTHID CURRENT_USER...This means that it runs under the security domain of whatever user executes it, not under the security domain of the package owner/definer.
    Either GRATN EXECUTE on this Java resource to your new user, or alternatively, have your SXXML schema create a wrapper package for XMLGEN that is created using the default of definer's rights. Then, anyone that you GRANT EXECUTE to your wrapper procedure can use it.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

  • User profile synchronization service wont start after SharePoint Service pack SP2

    Hi
    -Using SharePoint 2010 with 1 appserver and 2 frontend webservers on Service Pack2. (ms server 2008r2, SQLServer2008r2).
    -Farmaccount has been set to local admin on all sp servers.
    -Firstly, the User Profile Service Application runs fine and is started. Dont mix it with the User profile synchronization Service.
    Prior to installing SP2 User profile service application and user profile synchronization service were running fine.
    The first thing I did after the installation of SP2 was running the:
    -psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait
    As SharePoint setup user (spadmin).
    This ran fine on the 2 front end web servers.
    However i got one fault on the Appserver:
    I have also tried:
    PSConfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures
    which led to same resulting error.
    So I tried to start the Use profile synchronization service as suggested manually by logging on with the Farmaccount, starting the user profile synchronization service through Central Administration. This led to Stuck on Starting status.
    The windows services Forefront had status starting, then stopped.
    One question:
    Prior to starting the User profile synchronization service through Central Administration. What account and startup status should the 2 Forefront Windows Services have? (Automatic and local system?) or (Automatic and Farmaccount?) or (Disabled and Local
    system?) or (Disabled and farmaccount?). Because i know that SharePoint UPA will provision these services though Central Administration. However what is the default state prior to starting the Synchronization service?
    So i continue...
    Since it was stuck on starting i stopped it with:
    stop-SPServiceInstance -identity <upaSyncguid>
    which gave me:
    Stop-SPServiceInstance : An object of the type Microsoft.SharePoint.Administrat
    ion.SPServiceInstanceJobDefinition named "job-service-instance-36bdf2ef-58f2-45
    e5-8f78-ab75f646611a" already exists under the parent Microsoft.SharePoint.Admi
    nistration.SPTimerService named "SPTimerV4". Rename your object or delete the
    and i could fix with:
    #Stop the stopping:
    stsadm -o provisionservice -action stop -servicetype "Microsoft.Office.Server.Administration.ProfileSynchronizationService, Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles,
    Version=14.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c" -servicename FIMSynchronizationService
    I also removed the forefront certificate from personal - certificate store, as this is provisioned when user profile synchronization service is provisioned.
    That set the Central Administration Status on the User profile synchronization Service to disabled. Fine.
    Everytime i tried to start the user profile synchronization service (logged on as farmaccount), left it for 10-15 min and did iisreset and restart sharepoint timer service, and also tried rebooting the appserver. No change.
    A thought, is it important to restart timer service and do iisreset on the two frontend servers after trying to start the user profile synchronization service on the appserver?
    I'm getting to the point were i just want to delete the whole service application and set it up anew...
    any tips will be greatly appreaciated.

    You're very welcome, hope it helped, if not the I suggest you clear the configuration cache as follows.
    The config cache is where config settings are stored locally on the Microsoft SharePoint server, so a SQL call isn’t required.
    To clear the cache:
    Stop the SP Timer service. To do this, follow these steps:
    Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click
    Services.
    Right-click SharePoint 2010 Timer, and then click Stop.
    Close the Services console.
    On the computer that is running Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and on which the Central Administration site is hosted, click
    Start, click Run, type explorer, and then press ENTER.
    In Windows Explorer, locate and then double-click the following folder:
    %SystemDrive%\ProgramData\Microsoft\SharePoint\Config\GUID
    Notes
    The %SystemDrive% system variable specifies the letter of the drive on which Windows is installed. By default, Windows is installed on drive C.
    The GUID placeholder specifies the GUID folder. There may be more than one of these.
    The ProgramData folder may be hidden. To view the hidden folder, follow these steps:
    On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
    In the Advanced settings list, click Show hidden files and folders under
    Hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
    You can also simply type this directly in the path if you do not want to show hidden files and folders.
    Back up the Cache.ini file. (Make a copy of it. DO NOT DELETE THIS FILE, Only the XML files in the next step)
    Delete all the XML configuration files in the GUID folder (DO NOTE DELETE THE FOLDER). Do this so that you can verify that the GUID folders content is replaced by new XML configuration files when the cache is rebuilt.
    Note When you empty the configuration cache in the GUID folder, make sure that you
    do NOT delete the GUID folder and the Cache.ini file that is located in the GUID folder.
    Double-click the Cache.ini file.
    On the Edit menu, click Select All.
    On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    Type 1, and then click Save on the
    File menu. (Basically when you are done, the only text in the config.ini file should be the number 1)
    On the File menu, click Exit.
    Start the Timer service. To do this, follow these steps:
    Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click
    Services.
    Right-click SharePoint 2010 Timer, and then click Start.
    Close the Services console.
    Note The file system cache is re-created after you perform this procedure. Make sure that you perform this procedure on all servers in the server farm.
    Make sure that the Cache.ini file in the GUID folder now contains its previous value. For example, make sure that the value of the Cache.ini file is not 1.
    Check in the GUID folder to make sure that the xml files are repopulating. This may take a bit of time.

  • User Profile -Purchasing -returns nothing

    I created a User Profile in Oracle Applications under -Application Developer
    Application :Purchasing
    User Profile Name: PO: SBM CHANGE
    Hierarchy type: Security
    SQL validation:
    SQL="select decode(meaning,
                   'Yes','Full',
                   'No','None') \"Access Level\",
              lookup_code
         into :visible_option_value, :profile_option_value
         from fnd_lookups
         where lookup_type = 'YES_NO'
    Now I am trying to run this query which returns Nothing. Is that because i have application level *Purchasing*
    {code}
    select apps.fnd_profile.value('PO: SBM CHANGE') from dual;
    {code}
    Thanks

    Hi,
    First you need to give values for that profile option (resp. System Administrator > Profile > System).
    Also, when using fnd_profile.value, you need to specify the internal profile option name, and not the user profile option name (maybe they are identical in your case?).
    And also, typically you need to specify your context before calling fnd_profile. You can use fnd_global.apps_initialize for that.
    Hope it helps.
