Shared Library Linking Question

I'm building my first site using a shared library swf file.
I'm wondering about what elements have to be linked for everything
to work properly. For example:
In my shared library swf, I've got a menu movie clip built.
Within it, there is another movieclip with 6 buttons, a couple
motion tweens, and a couple graphics inside. So, in my menu
movieclip folder, there are about 12 different elements (buttons,
graphics, a couple movie clips, etc.
In any other swf file that uses the menu from the shared
library, do I just need to link and bring over the main menu
movieclip, or do I need to link every element and bring it over to
any swf that uses the menu? Or, is there even a better way to do
all of this? I've got at least 6 different swfs that will use this
menu. I'd only use it once on the master.swf, but it's nestled
within layers on the other seperate swfs for visual
purposes.

plaing the menu in every .swf file will increase the size of
each file. the shared library file will be larger than it needs to
be.
Why not just make one .swf that only contains the just the
menu. Then you could create a master file that loads the menu.swf
at a high enough level that it is always on top. The other movies
(webpages) could be loaded inbetween the master.swf, which you'd
probably put on level 1, and the menu.swf. That way only the bare
essentials would need to be stored in the shared library keeping
its size as small as possible.

DLLImport variable and library Linking question

Hello All,
I am using a CVI program with an external DLL file.
My program is designed to be able to load a specific DLL file from a collection of possible files depending on the required task.
I am making a common variable "result" in each DLL fille.
In my CVI program it is defined as int DLLIMPORT result;
In my DLL I have the variable defined as int DLLEXPORT result;
When I use the DLLIMPORT function for my program to get the variable "result" from the DLL, I get error:Undefined symbol "_imp...
If I include the library for one of my DLL's in my CVI program, this error goes away, of coures.
But because I am using multiple DLL's, one at a time, I do not want to link any librarys to a specific DLL.
I haven't had any issues using my DLL's with DLLEXPORT, but DLLIMPORT is giving me this linking issue when I build it.
What can I do to define my DLLIMPORT variable so I can bypass linking a library to my CVI program?

I defined a DLLEXPORT variable inside the DLL header file.
In my main program, I have a DLLIMPORT statement in my global header file for my main declaration, and then a EXTERN DLLIMPORT for any additional files in my program.
Basically I have multiple c files
In my main.c file I define MAIN.
In all my C files I include a global.h
Inside global.h I have:

DLLIMPORT variable;
#else
EXTERN DLLIMPORT variable;
#endif
That's what I was doing. I changed my desgin though.
I moved away from using DLLIMPORT in my program.
I am now passing a pointer to a structure everytime I call my DLL functions using DLLEXPORT, similar to the sample above.
Then my DLL can save data to memory in my main program using that pointer.
As long as my DLL's use consitent formatting (which is the idea), this should be adequate.
I have tested this and so far it works pretty well.

The warning seem to be related to the fact that I use virtual members in classes that are derived and the member overriden. (I'm saying that because I have a similar library with no virual members and I don't get the warnings even if I use the same options).

Question about upgrading iTunes multiple computers with shared library

Greetings,
I have a question about upgrading to the current version of iTunes.
Currently, my household uses 3 Mac computers (2 Powerbook 17in laptops and a Mack Mini). We are all (currently) on system 10.4.11 (with iTunes 9.2.1). Between the 3 computers we have a shared iTunes music and video library on a networked high capacity hard drive.
We recently purchased an iPad. In order to make it easy for updates and to use media from our iTunes shared library I decided that we should upgrade the systems on our home computers to Snow Leopard. I have ensured that all the computers have at lease 2 Gb of RAM and adequate hard drive space.
The only possible problem I see is that one of the Powerbook laptops uses the old Motorola processor. (This is one of the last Powerbooks to use that processor.) I don’t think this computer can be upgraded to Snow Leopard.
My question is, if I upgrade 2 of the computers (and iTunes in the process), will I still be able to access the shared iTunes library using the older computer with the older system and iTunes? Will the upgrade process change the iTunes library in such a way that the one older computer will no longer be able to properly access that library?
Are there any other problems I might encounter having a mixed system/iTunes environment?

to do that, you would ideally have the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) on the external. then, on one Mac after the other, launch iTunes while holding the option key, click on +choose library+ when prompted, and select the iTunes folder on the external.

Well then maybe I misunderstood what you meant even though now that you explained it again, I should have though about that.
When you leave the house in the morning with your device, you lose the connection to the library because you are no longer on the same WiFi network as you are at home. You have to be on the same network in order to use Home Sharing. Once you get home again, you have to select the Shared Library again.
I apologize for the confusion or misunderstanding.

The package seems to build fine, although namcap produces these warnings:

Doing some research, I found that MD5_Init is part of the OpenSSL library (which nixio uses for its cryptographic functions), and that "undefined symbol" errors are indicative of a program compiling and linking properly, but not being able to load a shared library at runtime. However, OpenSSL is installed properly and libssl.so is in my /usr/lib.
What should I do to fix this error? It builds properly when installed using LuaRocks. I tried adding various flags from the rockspec (run "luarocks download nixio" and "luarocks unpack nixio-0.3-1.src.rock" to look at it) but still can't get it to work.

You probably did not install the required C++ shared library patches on the system where you are running the compiler. On Solaris 9 for SPARC, Studio 11 requires patches 111711-12 and 111712-12. Studio 11 also requires other patches, which are in the installation image.
You can find out what shared library version you have by running these commands:
version /usr/lib/libCstd.so.1
version /usr/lib/sparcv9/libCstd.so.1
If the patch versions are not -12 or later, run the Studio 11 installer again, and this time have it install the Solaris patches (but nothing else).

In LabVIEW for Linux, cannot link to a shared library file (.so).

Hello all,
I'm having trouble using the Call Library Function Node within LabVIEW for Linux (using Ubuntu). I can configure my Node correctly, and it sees the available function within it with all the proper parameters, but when I close the Call Library Function dialog box it does a quick search and asks me to Find the Shared Library Named "mySharedLibraryName." If I select it again, it merely repeats this over and over until I cancel. Has anyone seen this before or know what is causing this? The .so file was compiled using gcc++ - is there anything specific that should have been included (does it need a header file)? Could some missing file be causing this?

The elf shared library format is a supported feature of all Linux distributions since about Linux 1.0 or earlier. So it is not really an issue that Ubuntu wouldn't support shared libraries as used by the LabVIEW Call Library Node. Since the Call Library Node seems to be able to see the exported functions during selection of the function it also doesn't seem to be a problem with proper export of the symbols.
This leaves over some dependencies of the shared library on some other shared libraries including C runtime libraries. Was the shared library compiled on the system you try to use it? If not you may have an incompatibility of the C runtime library version used on the system that was used to compile the shared library and your Ubuntu system you try to load it.

Question on shared library

Hi, I added a jar from MW_HOME/modules as a shared library in Window->Preference->Shared Library in my OEPE and sure the app compiles fine. But this is my own eclipse IDE setting. I don't understand how I can get this setting to my teammate. and how this setting will get deployed to other environment. where is it saved? Thanks!

The jars present at MW_HOME\modules should not be referenced as Shared Library. They fall under "WebLogic System Library" category and these jars are already available on WebLogic system classloader. Try the following steps to resolve the reference:
- Window | Preference | WebLogic | Shared Library, remove MW_HOME\modules jar entry
- In Project Explorer, expand Java Resources | Libraries and right click on "WebLogic System Libraries" > Properties
- click + and add module reference, select module ID and complete
NOTE: The WebLogic System library definition is stored in project\.settings\oracle.eclipse.tools.weblogic.syslib.xml file. This file can be checked into source control and shared among team members.
For reference, what type of project are you working on? And what module jar(s) are you trying to resolve?

NT DLL to Solaris Shared Library; C++ Exceptions

I have written a "plugin" DLL for a third party product that runs on NT. In my plugin I use C++ exception handling and it works wonderfully :-)
I am now trying to port my plugin so that it will work with the same third party product, but this time running on Solaris.
I knew I was going to have to port my DLL to Solaris and so made sure I did not use any Win32 specific anything. My code compiles & links fine on Solaris. For the most part it even works correctly.
The problem I have is that my code is not catching any of the exceptions it is throwing.
Section 5.14 of the C++ Programming Guide says that for exception handling to work in a shared library, it must be loaded with the RTLD_GLOBAL flag passed to the dlopen() function used to load the shared library.
Of course since the dlopen() function is in a third party product I have no way of knowing whether this parameter is being passed to the dlopen() function or not .. and more importantly I have no way of forcing it to be so.
So ultimately I guess the question for the more experienced shared library writers is .. do you just not use C++ exception mechanism because you can not force your shared library to be opened with the proper parameter to dlopen() .. or is there something else I can do to enable C++ exceptions in my shared library.

PowerPoint Launch Failure - Shared Library

- That is the message I get as soon as I double click on PowerPoint. Both Word and Excel work fine. All of the other apps I have seem to work fine. I am running 10.3.9. I have 1 Gig of RAM.
- SteveRidesSteel has an iBook G4 that also has the same problem. He is running 10.4.7
- Casey has the same problem.
- Several people all over the internet have had shared library errors after installing various games.
- There apparently is a Shared Library Error when updating to OS X 10.4.3

I followed your advice. Here is what happened. The clip I've included is from the time I turned on the computer, opened Safari, connected to AOL for email, and then opened the posting from the Mac Forum. I haven't opened any pics, so not sure why I have jpeg failures. Then I opened PowerPoint.

Shared Library--One iPod--two XP users.... massive duplications!

Our iTunes is filling up with duplicate entries! My wife and I recently bought a new XP computer and uploaded our music collection to iTunes so that we could use the iPod w/dock as our main music source. I tried to set it up so that everything went to the "Shared Music" folder. I now find that our new iPod has formed a primary bond with my wife's library and not the shared library. Is there a way to change this? I'm hitting a lot of trouble with duplications--and I suspect it may have something to do with this.... Help!

Actually, I just figured out the answer to my own question. Apparently this is not possible with the shuffle. I don't know how to cross-post on these boards, but if anyone else is interested the relevant thread can be found by searching for:

Adding shared library to project fails

We've created a shared library of content and look & feel updates to Portal 9.2 mp1.
Started by creating a new web and app project. Made sure it works in a test portal.
I followed Floyd Jones instructions on creating shared J2EE libs.
Created a "simple project" copied the files (with exception of the webcontent folder - but all its contents). Created the Manifest file. Saved it as a .war in the modules folder.
Create a new web and app project for testing. When I pull in the library, portal doesn't seem to work following the instructions (Can't find WebLogic J2EE Libraries option to add). So I add the J2EE libraries via the project properties. When I link to the war file, the manifest information does not appear. Instead just the name of the actual .war file.
I can add the versions. Workshop requires me to edit the weblogic.xml file to pull in the library.
But no luck. My suspicion is there's something wrong with the library as it can't read the manifest. When I open the manifest inside the .war file all the information is there.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

you'll have to physically put all the songs on to the computer that doesnt have it. to do this go to start>my network places and if you are on a network his computer should show up. You'll probably need to enable sharing for your My Music folder (just assuming thats where you music is at) and just copy it over.

Problem with JNI in a Solaris shared library

I have a problem.
I have used JNI in my .dll on Windows & .so on Solaris . I have also used the same JNI code in a .exe on Windows & an executable on Solaris. 3 out of the above 4 combinations work & 1 doesen't. When I use JNI from a .so on Solaris 8(with/without the J2SE recommended patch), the JVM seems to have some exception & dumps core when I invoke CreateJavaVM(). This is an update to the original message -
I have tried both HotSpot & Server JVMs but still see the
same behavior. I'm using 1.4 .
I'd like to provide more information to those who can help
me. I have a feeling there might be something wrong in my

Is it possible to Sync an iPod (or iPhone) with a Shared Library?

I know this is a silly, basic question, but 6:30 AM is just too early for me to keep digging for the answer.
So, I have several computers at home. ONE of them is used to purchase and store all of my iTunes music. This same computer is used to sync several iPods. The entire library on this computer is shared. Two other computers in the house are Authorized on the same account and regularly play music stored on the "first" computer.
So here's the rub.
My duaghter just got a new iPhone. She has her own MAC. I'd like her to begin using her own computer to sync her iPod and iPhone.
Is it possible to sync her iPod and iPhone using HER computer (that is authorized on my account) and MY shared library?

I don't think it is possible to sync an ipod to a shared library for copyright reasons. Sharing is great and simple for accessing and listening to other computer's music over a network, but to sync your ipod - I believe can only be done from that particular itune's music library. But here's how I work around this so that I don't have to have my 90 GB Music Folder copied on multiple computers:
Copy these files from your main computer (the one that has and controls your master itunes library) into the same location on any other computer on your network (say your daughter's computer): user/music/itunes/iTunes Music Library.xml & iTunes Library. Before copying them over to daughter's computer, remove the old files (maybe keep somewhere else just in case) and have itunes shut down. Then start up itunes on your daughter's computer and it should look identical to the main computer's itunes (and the same as the shared library). What you've esentially done is created a separate itunes library data base that can be managed on your daughter's computer but one that accesses the same actual music files that are on the main computer's Music Folder. To check go to Preferences/Advanced and you'll see that the Music Folder location is pointing to the same file as on the main computer (whose Music Folder is now being used as a sort of network music despository). You'll notice that when your daughter's computer starts itunes and plays a song, the main computer's hard drive where the Music Folder is stored will mount on her computer. So the main computer obviously has to be turned on, or more accurately, the location of the Music Folder (could be on an external hard drive) must be accessible over the network. Your duaghter can now create her own spearate playlists and sync her ipod to her own library which is accessing the same song files (Music Folder) as the main computer. And both of you can be playing from itunes at the same time independantly.
Here's the tricky part that takes some coordintation: Since you'll both be accessing and adding to the same huge Music Folder, you'll need to coordinate with eachother if you want to be able to have each computer's itunes database "see" any music that the other person has added or purchased. For purchasing or adding music to the music folder, both of you should have in Preferences/Advanced the "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" selection checked when purchasing music or adding music via burning. If your daughter, for example, buys an album and has this preference selected, then it will go to the Music Folder and she will have access to it. But the other computer doesn't know that this was added to the music folder and it won't show up in that computer's itunes. For itunes to knwo a song is in it's Music Library it has to add it to it. SO, from this other computer, go to File/Add to Library and navigate to the location within the Music Folder and then select the newly purchased album and it will now show up in this itunes as well - BUT before you do this you should UNcheck the "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" preference so that the album is not duplicated in the Music Folder. Then if this computer wants to purchase an album, you need to have this checked again. Basically if your doing the original adding you have to have the "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" checked. If your simply letting your itunes know that something was added then have the "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" unchecked before you add it to your library. And if someone creates a playlist that the other wants, you can still share eachother's libraries (even though your accessing the same Music Folder) or even export the playlist and import it into the other computer.
Sounds tricky but it's actually pretty easy and allows each person to sort of control his/her itunes and sync their own ipods/iphones all from the same Music Folder.

ITunes can't access shared library when Vista parental controls are on

I'm using 64 bit Vista with iTunes version of 8.0.2.20, but I don't believe this issue has anything to do with the 64 bit versus 32 bit iTunes versions.
The exact message is:
"The shared library "libraryname" is not responding. (-39)
Check that any firewall software running on either the shared computer or this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689."
But if I turn off Parental Controls, the shared library is accessible, it all works fine. This has nothing to do with the iTunes store (and potential web site blocking), I just want to allow shared library access while leaving parental controls on.
Any ideas?

This question has been around for almost two years now with no answer...very frustrating and disappointing that no one from Apple can step in and assist. I have set up the port number on my firewalls, both Windows and McAfee, as per the iTunes message and it still does not work...so I am now at a loss.
Turn off parental conrols and it all works perfectly...turn it on and library is visible but not accessible...PLEASE can someone help with this!!!
