SharePoint 2013: Edition requirement for multi tier setup.

Dear all,
I am planning to setup a high availability 3-tier SharePoint farm.
My question is which edition of SharePoint 2013 should i purchase? Standard version or enterprise version?
My requirement is just a simple document management system.
Any help/guides would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Regards
vinay

You can use any edition for high availability on the SharePoint side: Foundation, Standard, or Enterprise.
SQL Server is a different story, you'll want to look at the options for high availability available with each edition of SQL Server.

    Hi All,
Do Sharepoint 2013 servers require an internet connection? I ask as I believe the apps catalog needs to look at Microsoft.com for the store?
    Thanks

If you're going to use the App Catalog, yes it does require an Internet connection. Otherwise, no it does not. If you do prevent access to the Internet, you'll want to make sure to follow this process: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2625048

  • Share the same SharePoint 2013 development environment for multiple developers

    Hi,
We need our developers(more than 2) to use the same ''SharePoint 2013 development server' for different application developments. Their work should not affect each others(like application pool reset etc.). How this can be achieved ?
    Thanks,,

    Hi Kalai,
Please check the following similar post suggested that each developer could deploy his dll file to each separated web application bin folder by setting Visual Studio property "Assembly Deployment Target" to "Web Application".

From today's morning , We are having Issue on Our Online SharePoint Site.

Unable to load type Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPUpgradeCompatibilityException required for deserialization.
Please write in quick response to fix it at
    [email protected]

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that SharePoint Online Site was unable to load web part and got the “Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPUpgradeCompatibilityException” error.
Per my knowledge, the SPUpgradeCompatibilityException occurs during upgrade when the front-end Web server attempts to connect to an incompatible database.
Please check whether the database is compatible.
Regarding SharePoint Online, for quick and accurate answers to your questions, it is recommended that you initial a new thread in Office 365 forum.

  • How do I setup SharePoint 2013 web applications for 2 TB of data?

    Hi,
I know Microsoft recommend to have 1 App pool with 1 Web App and 1 Content Database.
The issue is that in my company SharePoint is going to be a file repository with about 2 TB of data. Management wants that to happen.
I was thinking to have 1 App pool and about 18 Web App for each department so that it can hold all that data with a maximum of 200 GB per Content DB in 2 SQL clustered servers.
Is that OK? Is this best practices?

    Chicho84,
Yes, in SharePoint it is suggested to not allow to grow content DB more than 200 GB. Now will your environment starts with 2TB (after migration) or it will steadyly migrate eventually 2TB data. If so that you can think of Host heard site collection with
    individual content db.
I am sure that you know that SharePoint is not only a DMS but also come with variety of useful service like Search, Workflow, Forms, Social etc. Thease all are going to be a important tool in your organisation. So planing for other services and hardware
    is also very important.

  • Sharepoint 2013 BI feature installation multi-server deployment

    Hello Experts,
I have a 6 server farm setup in which I need to enable the Sharepoint 2013 BI features, and I need some clarification  as follows.
When installing reporting services for SharePoint add-in, should it be installed on all servers(application and wfes)
When installing powerpivot for SharePoint should it be installed on all servers(application and wfes)
What other add-on should I consider to install.
    R,
    Shola

    Hi Shola,
1.No, SSRS Add-in could be deployed into WFE Servers only.
2.Yes,you need to install SQL Server 2012 SP1 PowerPivot for Microsoft SharePoint (sppowerpivot.msi) on each server in the farm.
    3.No.
For more information, you can have a look at the blogs:

  • Update Managed Metadata field in SharePoint 2013 Designer Workflow for O365

    Hi Guys,
I need to update the managed metadata field in SharePoint Custom List using Workflow but its not working. I have also tried to use the HTTP WebService POST Operation but no luck.
Am doing this for a SharePoint Online (O365) Site.
Has anyone worked on something similar and was able to get it running ?
I saw a post to create a custom Workflow Activity but I don't have a choice to go with the custom code option.
    http://patrickboom.wordpress.com/2013/07/23/workflow-activity-set-managed-metadata-column/
I was able to achieve this by creating a SP 2010 based Workflow for O365. Which means that it worked well with SP 2010.
Is there a different way to do it in 2013 ? I tried almost all options apart from creating custom Activity but nothing worked out.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks,
    Nutan
    Nutan Sharma

    Hi Nutan,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to update Managed Metadata field with SharePoint 2013 Designer for SharePoint Online.
As far as I know, there is not an OOB action to achieve your requirement with SharePoint 2013 Designer for SharePoint 2013. Customizing a workflow action is a better option to achieve it.  Why didn’t you customize a workflow action as Patrick’s blog?
In addition, please take a look at the article about Nintex workflow, check whether it is useful for you:
    http://habaneroconsulting.com/insights/setting-managed-metadata-fields-in-a-nintex-workflow#.UykBSf6KDHo
As this issue is about SharePoint Online, I suggest you create a new thread on SharePoint Online forum:

  • SharePoint 2013 Development Environment for Devolopers

    Hi All,
What is the system requirements for developing and deploying web-parts in SharePoint site for developers?
we are getting above error when trying to deploying web parts from local machine, our local machine configuration in win 7 with visual studio 2013.
    Mani L

    Hi,
This is a known bug that will be fixed in the future versions of the SharePoint Developer Tools.
As for now the workaround is to have the host mapped in the hosts file not to 127.0.0.1 but to your real IP address.
When you try to create a new SharePoint 2013 project or will change the URL of an existing project everything will work as expected.
Please mark the same as answer if it helps you. Thanks.

  • SQL Server 2012 Edition required for my case??

    Hi,
I am setting up a SharePoint 2013 BI environment with minimal servers. Below is the configuration:
    1) WFE1 - Front End Server Role
    2) APP1 - Application Server Role with SSRS 2012, SSAS in SharePoint mode.
SQL Server 2012 BI edition is used here for SSRS and SSAS in SharePoint mode
    3) DB Server  - SharePoint content databases only
    - Can this SQL Server be standard edition ? or does this server also need to have minimum BI features which means it should be BI or Enterprise edition?
    Thanks
    Sandeep

    Hi Sandeep,
Thanks for posting your query, Below are the URLs that describe the situation to USE the SQL SERVER Standard or Enterprise Edition for BI features. Kindly go through these URLs once to get the difference.

  • For migration/upgradation of MOSS 2007 enterprise to Sharepoint 2013 System specification for new environment.

We have an installation of MOSS 2007 enterprise in production right now with sql server 2008 SP3 and Nintex workflow 7.
We need to migrate and upgrade to Sharepoint 2013. What system specifications we need to upgrade to sharepoint 2010 and sharepoint 2013.

A third party tool carries the advantages of being free of infrastructure requirements.  If you don't have the budget for this, than you'll need to "double-hop" from SharePoint 2007 into SharePoint 2010 and then onto 2013.
The jump from 2007 to 2010 is likely to be the most painful.  As John mentions any customisations and third party additions to your MOSS farm will need to be addressed as well.

  • Sharepoint 2013 and Onedrive for Business

    Hello,
I need help with understanding Onedrive and have few questions. It would be nice if someone can help me with this:
We have Sharepoint 2013 Enterprise and we will use OneDrive for Business with it. Now how is the user adminsitration works? Do I have to create new users or I can user that accounts from Active Directory? Everything is stored in SQL database.
Today users have home folders and is it good to replace it with OneDrive?

    Hi,
When we use the OneDrive or OneDrive for Business, we should first understand the differences between them.
OneDrive for Business is a personal library intended for storing and organizing your work documents. As an integral part of Office 365 or SharePoint Server 2013, OneDrive for Business lets you work within the context of your organization, with features such
as direct access to your organization’s address book.
OneDrive for Business is online storage intended for business purposes. Your OneDrive for Business library is
managed by your organization and lets you share and collaborate on work documents with co-workers. Site collection administrators in your organization control what you can do in the library.
However, OneDrive is free online personal storage that you get with either a Microsoft account or Outlook.com. Use OneDrive to  save
documents, photos, and other files in the cloud, share them with friends, and even collaborate on content. You’re free to decide how you want to use it.
NOTE    In the header or elsewhere on your SharePoint or Office 365 site, ‘OneDrive’ appears as an abbreviation of OneDrive for Business to keep things simpler.
If you use the OneDrive, we don’t need create new users, and we couldn’t use the AD account . OneDrive use the Microsoft account or Outlook.com.
For more information, you can have a look at the following article.

  • Lync 2013 certificate requirements for multiple SIP domains

    Hi All,
I am engaged with a client in respect of a Lync 2013 implementation initially as a conferencing platform with a view to enabling EV functions (inc. PSTN conferencing) in the future. They initially need to support 30 SIP domains and eventually
around 100 SIP domains which is proving to be either not possible or severely cost prohibitive. Their current certificate provider, Thawte, can only support up to 25 SANs and have quoted them 5 figures. We tend to use GeoTrust as they are cheaper but they
appear to have a limit of 25 SANs. GoDaddy appear to support up to 100 SANs for a pretty reasonable cost. My questions are as follows:
Is there a way that I’m missing of reducing the number of SANs required on the Edge server?
Use aliases for access edge FQDNs - Supported by desktop client but not by other devices so not really workable
Don’t support XMPP federation therefore removing the need for domain name FQDNs for each SIP domain
Is there a way that I’m missing of reducing the number of SANs required on the Reverse Proxy server?
Friendly URL option 3 from this page:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg398287.aspx
    Client auto-configuration:
    i.
Don’t support mobile client auto-configuration in which case no lyncdiscover.sipdomain1.com DNS records or SANs would be required.
    ii.
Support mobile client auto-configuration over HTTP only in which case CNAME records are required for each SIP domain (lyncdiscover.sipdomain1.com, etc. pointing to lyncdiscover.designateddomain.com) but no SANs are required.
    iii.
Support mobile client auto-configuration over HTTPS in which case DNS records are required for each SIP domain and a SAN entry for each SIP domains is also required. This is because a DNS CNAME to another domain is not supported over
    HTTPS.
If the answer to 1 and/or 2 is no, are there certificate providers that support over 100 SANs?
How do certificate requirements differ when using the Lync 2013 hosting pack? I would think that this issue is something that a hosting provider would need to overcome.
Would the Lync 2013 Hosting Pack work for this customer? The customer uses SPLA licensing so I think is eligible to use the hosting pack but not 100% sure it will work in their environment given that client connections are supposed
to all come through the Edge where their tenants will be internal and also given the requirement for an ACP for PSTN conferencing.
    Many thanks,

    Many thanks for the response.
I was already planning to use option 3 from the below page for simple URLs to cut down on SAN requirement.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg398287.aspx
What are the security concerns for publishing autodiscover over port 80? I.e. Is this only used for the initial download of the discovery record and then HTTPS is used for authentication? This seems to be the case from the following note on the below page:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/hh690030.aspx
Mobile device clients do not support multiple Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates from different domains. Therefore, CNAME redirection to different domains is not supported over HTTPS. For example, a DNS CNAME record for lyncdiscover.contoso.com that redirects
to an address of director.contoso.net is not supported over HTTPS.
In such a topology, a mobile device client needs to use HTTP for the first request, so that the CNAME redirection is resolved over HTTP. Subsequent requests then use HTTPS. To support this scenario, you need to configure your reverse proxy with a web publishing
    rule for port 80 (HTTP).
For details, see "To create a web publishing rule for port 80" in Configuring the Reverse Proxy for Mobility. CNAME redirection to the same domain is supported over HTTPS. In this case, the destination domain's certificate covers the originating
    domain.”
I don’t think SRV records for additional SIP domain access edge is a workable solution as this is not supported by some devices.
    As per the below article:
    http://blog.schertz.name/2012/07/lync-edge-server-best-practices/
“The recommended approach for external client Automatic Sign-In when supporting multiple SIP domains is to include a unique Access Edge FQDN for each domain name in the SAN field.  This is no longer a requirement (it was in OCS) as it is possible to
create a DNS Service Locator Record (SRV) for each additional SIP domain yet have them all point back to the same original FQDN for the Access Edge service (e.g. sip.mslync.net).
This approach will trigger a security alert in Windows Lync clients which can be accepted by the user, but some other clients and devices are unable to connect when the Automatic Sign-In process returns a pair of SRV and Host (A) records which do not share
the same domain namespace.  Thus it is still best practice to define a unique FQDN for each additional SIP domain and include that hostname in the external Edge certificate’s SAN field”.
    ===================
    1. Basically the requirement is to initially provide Lync conferencing services (minus PSTN conferencing) to internal, external, federated and anonymous participants with a view to providing PSTN conferencing and therefore enterprise voice services later.
    2. The customer currently supports close to 100 SMTP domains and wants to align their SIP domains with these existing domains. The structure of their business is such that “XXX IT Services” provide the IT infrastructure for a collection of companies who
fall under the XXX umbrella but are very much run as individual entities.
    Question:
Would you agree that I’m going to need a SAN for every SIP domain’s access edge FQDN?
    Thanks.
