They are very, very different beasts.
Firstly FAST Search for SharePoint is the old name for the product and is only relevant for SharePoint 2010 not 2013. It got merged into the standard SharePoint search for the 2013 release.
SharePoint search is aimed at providing a Bing or Google like experience for your intranet content, as well as providing some nifty features that are purely SharePoint releated along the way. That means it can crawl SharePoint content, file shares,
outlook mailboxes, internal and external websites and probably fifty other different things if you really tried. Whilst i'm not an expert on SQL full text search I believe it's intended to provide a search feature for content held within SQL databases
    and tables.
Can you run SharePoint purely for Search? Yes, definitely.

    Hi,

    1 SQL Server Cluster
    2 WFE
    1 Index Server
    1 Search Server
Please see bellow a more detailed specification. Our DNS is using a Load Balancer
It turns out that when it uses one WFE (SERVWFE05) it throws this error:
SharePoint 2010 Search Error: "Internal server error exception"
when it uses the other one (SERVWFE06) it works.

  • SharePoint Foundation 2010 supported sql server version?

    Hi,
I am using SharePoint 2010 Foundation. I want to know what are all the SQL Server versions would support in SharePoint 2010 Foundation.
Could anyone tell me as soon as possible.
    Thanks & Regards
    Poomani Sankaran

It requires Windows Server 2008 SP2 or Windows Server 2008 R2. It will not run on a Server Core installation.
It requires one of these versions of x64 SQL Server:
SQL Server 2005 SP3 CU3 (Build 4220) or greater (Note: SQL Server 2005 goes out of mainstream support in April 2011)
                    SQL Server 2008 SP1 CU2 (Build 2714) or greater
                    SQL Server 2008 R2
    Check this blog
    http://www.sqlservercentral.com/blogs/glennberry/2010/03/11/sharepoint-2010-and-various-versions-of-sql-server/
    further from msdn
In order to maintain SharePoint and SQL Server compatibility we use the “SharePoint N-1
on SQL Server N+1”  equation to determine version support. Using SharePoint Foundation 2010 as an example, the N release of SQL Server is 2008/2008 R2 and N+1 is SQL Server 2012. For Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013 the N release of SQL Server
is 2012 and the N+1 is SQL Server 2014.

  • SharePoint 2013 Enterprise and SQL Server 2012 Standard edition vs. Enterprise - feature question

I can't seem to find any clear answers to the implications of installing SQL Server 2012 standard edition vs. enterprise in regards to SharePoint 2013.
I understand that to get many of the features you need Enterprise edition of SQL 2012; but, what I can't figure out is if the backend SharePoint SQL 2012 is standard; but, the PowerPivot/SSRS server is Enterprise will we still get the features?
If we have 3 tier SharePoint farm, one of those tiers is for the SQL Server database backend.  If that SQL instance is 2012 standard and we add another server to the farm w/ SQL 2012 Enterprise to handle the tabular models, PowerPivot, and SSRS in integrated
mode will we still get the features?
Or, can we (should we) install Enterprise 2012 as the SharePoint database backend and let that instance triple down as also the PowerPivot and SSRS instance?
    The Degenerate Dimension

    Hi MMilligan,
SQL Server 2012 Standard is not supported PowePivot for SharePoint . In addition, SQL Server 2012 Standard is also not support some Reporting Services Features.

  • Freetext search in sql server

    Hello all-
This is much more a SQL Server question than a ColdFusion
question- but I'm not using Transact SQL, so the SQL Server
resources aren't really telling me anything I need to know.
I'm using FREETEXT for full-text searching on SQL Server
2000. (CF8 on Windows) Currently this gives me an 'OR' search.
So if I put in 3 words such as: 'web policy manual' the
search will come back with anything that contains ANY of those
    words.
Does anyone know how to change that to an AND search that
will return only the documents that contain all three?
    Thanks for any help-
    Karl

I did end up using CONTAINS, but it took me a few tries to
    get it right.
Contains with an 'OR' is easy, but contains with 'AND' means
that each word in your search criteria needs to be in a different
function. And none of those functions can fail, or the whole thing
    will fail.
So first I had to clean up the search critiera, then do the
search itself. I have attached code samples below.
    Thanks for the suggestions-

  • SharePoint 2013 Search - Zip - Parser server ran out of memory - Processing this item failed because of a IFilter parser error

Moving content databases from 2010 to 2013 August CU. Have 7 databases attached and ready to go, all the content is crawled successfully except zip files. Getting errors such as
Processing this item failed because of a IFilter parser error. ( Error parsing document 'http://sharepoint/file1.zip'. Error loading IFilter for extension '.zip' (Error code is 0x80CB4204). The function encountered an unknown error.; ; SearchID = 7A541F21-1CD3-4300-A95C-7E2A67B2563C

SharePoint 2013 in a single instance out-of-the-box. Didn't install custom iFilters as 2013 supports zip. No other extensions have this issue. Range in file size from 60-90MB per zip. They contain mp3 files. I can download and unzip the file as needed.
Should I care that the index isn't being populated with these items since they contain no metadata? I am thinking I should just omit these from the crawl.

This issue came back up for me as my results aren't displaying since this data is not part of the search index.
Curious if anyone knows of a way to increase the parser server memory in SharePoint 2013 search?

  • 32-bit iFilter with Reader 11.0.10 cannot be found by SQL 2012 Fulltext Indexing on Windows 7 32 bit. How can I fix this?

I have verified that a record shows up in the fulltext system components (EXEC sys.sp_help_fulltext_system_components 'filter').
componenttype    componentname    clsid    fullpath    version    manufacturer
    filter    .pdf    E8978DA6-047F-4E3D-9C78-CDBE46041603    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\AcroRdIF.dll    11.0.0.379    Adobe Systems, Inc.
I have also added Reader's installation folder to my system PATH variable, and ran these 3 things:
    EXEC sp_fulltext_service 'update_languages';
    EXEC sp_fulltext_service 'load_os_resources', 1;
    EXEC sp_fulltext_service 'restart_all_fdhosts';
and then dropped and re-created my fulltext index.  For each row in the table, I receive a message like this:
Warning: No appropriate filter was found during full-text index population for table or indexed view '[DocumentIndexing].[dbo].[Document]' (table or indexed view ID '277576027', database ID '8'), full-text key value '17'. Some columns of the row were not indexed.
In the Registry, under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT / .pdf / PersistentHandler is the value {F6594A6D-D57F-4EFD-B2C3-DCD9779E382E}.
I have tried several times to install/fix my PDF installation, restart SQL Server, Reboot my laptop, etc.  All to no avail.
I saw the article on the 64-bit filter and was able to successfully do that on another workstation (Windows 8.1 64-bit SQL 2012).  However, I really need this working on my laptop.
Do you have a solution or workaround or some recommendations for me to move forward with this?
    Thanks,
    Dave

I found the solution.  Here it is:
Take backup of below registry key.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\MachineGuid This key should ideally have the GUID of the machine without curly braces, so {xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx} becomes xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx
    Then delete the braces.
Try to reboot and start the SQL service . If service don’t start then Uninstall and reinstall SQL.
The MachineGuid had curly braces so I removed them and rebooted my laptop.  Now both instances of SQL Server start.  It is the last post of this thread:
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/56f14665-3f00-41ff-b002-bb5e86b3f219/sql-server-not-starting-fallback-certificate-initialization-failed?forum=sqlsecurity
He states that he got it from Microsoft but did not give the url.
    Thanks for all your help.

  • Install SharePoint 2013 database on SQL server 2012 SP1 cluster

    Good Day all,
We are trying to install SharePoint 2013 database on a SQL server 2012 Enterprise with SP1 cluster (configured for mixed mode) but the connection is not working (times out). We can telent the SQL cluster network name on port 1433 and we made
a UDL connection file, test the connection via windows authentication and it is working, but if we use the sql authentication it is not working.
Also we have two SharePoint 2013 servers connected via NLB.
Any idea about this issue guys?

event if 3355 means 3 things:
The SQL Server might be offline.
The SharePoint Foundation database access account might not have the necessary permissions to communicate with the SQL Server.
A firewall that runs on either the local server or on SQL Server might be blocking network communications.
Big question, how you trying to connect SQL  windows or sql authentication? is it throwing error on Config wizard or somewhere else?

  • DPM 2010 (Domain A), Sharepoint 2010 (Domain A), SQL Server 2008 R2 (Domain B): Protection Group Problem SQL named is in wrong domain format.

    Good Evening,
So I have 3 Servers in all, with the following configurations:
    Server1: DPM2010.contoso.com (Domain A)
    Server2: Sharepoint2010WFE.contoso.com (Domain A)
    Server3: Sharepoint2010DB.contoso.net (Domain B)
I have prepared sharepoint2010wfe.contoso.com appropriatly by installing the DPM Agent, running configuresharepoint.exe -enablesharepointprotection & ConfigureSharepoint.exe enableSPSearchProtection.
I have prepared Sharepoint2010db.contoso.net by installing the DPM agent to the server using the manual installation method and creating local user credentials and connecting to the agent through install > attach agent.
In DPM all of agents are healthy so I go over to create the protection profile and I recieve the following error: DPM cannot protect your windows sharepoint services farm until you install agents on the following server: Sharepoint2010db.contoso.com (ID:
    956)
I have already attempted creating an alias on the WFE server for Sharepoint2010db.contoso.com and have it point to Sharepoint2010DB.contoso.net but this did not resolve my issue at all.
Also please keep in mind that pinging Sharepoint2010db.contoso.com is invalid as there is not a valid DNS entry of any kind, Im not even sure where this name is coming from other than some sort of a mashup. Also I am unable to domain join the SQL server
to contoso.com because of licensing costs.
A resolution to this issue woudl be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Deepan,
I run into exactly the same problem with SharePoint 2013 and DPM 2012SP1. SharePoint servers run in domain a, sql 2012 in domain b. We use a SQL alias SharePoint_PROD that is configured with the fqdn of the sql server (sql20.b.com), but DPM resolves it to
sql20.a.com when I try to configure SharePoint protection.  Is there any solution yet?
