Sharing in System Prefrences

I don't really know if this is suppose to be this way but, in my system prefrences window the sharing icon isn't a folder with a little yellow sign, it is a light switch icon. I don't remember it always remeber it being that way and i'm not sure if its suppose be like that or if i can change it.

You probably simply have a cache file that needs to be replaced, not the preference pane itself.
If you look in your home directory, in the Library/Caches folder, you will find a file called
com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
Close the System Preferences program. Then delete this file and empty the trash. Then reopen your System Preferences. See if the problem is fixed.

  • Printer sharing in System Preferences will not stay checked

I have two printers connected to my iMac (10.7.3) and I am trying to enable printer sharing for my MacBook Air to utilize the iMac's printers.  On the iMac, I go to System Prefrences > Sharing and check Printer Sharing and I ensure that both printers are being shared.  Everything is checked, but the second I close the System Prefrences window, the printer sharing stops working.  I go back into System Prefrences and the Printer Sharing box is unchecked.  Any idea as to why this is occuring?

Does Printer Sharing actually work until you close the preference pane? You've tested it?

  • I cant activate my web sharing in system preferences

I cant activate my web sharing in system preferences, what do I do ?
    tks for help...

Here's a quickly copy and pasted excert from David Pogue's book, Lion: The Missing Manual...
    Firing Up Web Sharing
Here’s how you turn your Mac into a low-budget Web site: Put the HTML documents, graphics, and files you want to publish into your Home → Sites folder. Every account’s Home folder has a Sites folder, and therefore the Mac can actually serve up lots of Web sites at once. Your Web site’s home page, by the way, won’t appear unless it’s named index.html. (Apple has already put an index.html document into your Sites folder, just to give you the idea; feel free to replace it.) And the other files you put in Sites aren’t accessible unless they’re linked from your index.html page.
Open System Preferences; click Sharing. Turn on the Web Sharing radio button.
Use the Sharing System Preferences pane to make designated folders on your hard drive available to anyone on your network. Note that your Mac’s IP address, shown here in underlined type, works only when people connect from across the local network. It probably won’t work from across the Internet; see the box on the facing page. You’ve just made the contents of your Sites folder available to anyone who connects to your Mac. Also note the line below the Computer Name box. That’s your Mac’s Bonjour name, which is a bit friendlier than its IP address. Send your network address to your friends and coworkers
People on your local office network can use your Mac’s Bonjour name to connect. It appears at the top of the Sharing pane, as shown in Figure 22-1. For example, your colleagues can type http:// office-mac.local/ ~ chris into their Web browsers, where office-mac.local is your Mac’s Bonjour name and chris is your short user name. If other people will be connecting from the Internet, you need to figure out your public IP address; as noted in the box on The IP Address Mess: Port Forwarding, that might be your router’s IP address, not your Mac’s. Your Mac Web site’s address might be, for example, http:// 111.222.3.44/ ~ chris/ (the number is your public IP address, and the name should be your short user name). Don’t forget the final slash. Tell your friends to bookmark it so they won’t have to remember all that. You’ve just put your Mac-based Web page on the Internet for all to see— that is, all who know your secret Web address. Maybe you’ll want to distribute the address only to other people on your office network, using your tiny Web site as a distribution source for documents. Or maybe you’ll want to go whole-hog, hosting an e-commerce Web site (read on). The Mac’s Own Web Site The instructions above show you how to create a Web site in your Home → Sites folder. In other words, they guide you through the process of creating a personal Web site. But if you have an Administrator account (Chapter   12), you can also put your Web pages into the main hard drive window’s Library → WebServer → Documents folder. This is your Mac’s main Web site folder, and its address is simply, for example, http:// 111.222.3.44/. That is, it’s just your public IP address, no user name needed. (Here again, if people will be connecting from across your office network, they can replace the IP number with your Mac’s Bonjour name.) Working with this primary Web site folder is only slightly different from the personal ones described above. Because you’re now working inside an official Mac OS X system folder, you must mind your permissions. Using the File → Get Info command, you should set up the permissions of any folders and documents inside the Library → Web-Server → Documents folder (an Images folder, for example). That way, you can ensure that you’re in control of which visitors are allowed to do what with your Web documents. The Easiest Way to Distribute Files Here’s a handy secret: If there isn’t a document whose name is index.html in your Sites folder (or index.html.en in your Library → WebServer → Documents folder), then visitors see, in their browsers, a handy list of the files that are in that folder (see Figure   21-2). This is a terrific convenience: It offers a quick, simple way for you to make a bunch of documents available for downloading. All your visitors have to do is click one of these file names. It downloads immediately, no matter what kind of computer your Web visitor is using.

    Hi Mr Drew
With System Preferences closed, in Finder locate and delete the file
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    and in
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/
and delete any .plist files referring to
    com.apple.screensaver....plist
Then try System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver to see if it works correctly.

  • WebLogic as Windows 2000 service over s shared file system

I am trying to install weblogic as a Windows 2000 service over a
shared file system with no sucess
(the shared fie system is provided by windows 2000 cluster services).
I am using the srvany utility to have the script that launches
weblogic be run as a service (I need this
because I must launch 2 instances of weblogic in the same machine
as services, i cannot do this
with the bea service tools, having different configurations for
    the classpath, or can I?)
The service works if weblogic is not installed in a shared file
    system.
On the shared file system, it fails (The service fails, is unabble
to start). I also made a script on the local file
system, that calls the weblogic script on the shared file system,
but weblogic fails to start (with no
message) when loading from the weblogic.classpath
    thanks for your attenction,

I have also tried running the service with the bea tools, with no
    sucess when running in
    the shared file system.
When i start the service, it seems to start ok, then stops. with
    no message.
Nothing is written to the log, any ideas?

  • Set sharing on system to read only now computer wlll not boot up

set sharing on system to read only now computer wlll not boot up

    Hello skiboat2,
Because the permissions have been changed, you will need to put them back to what they were before. One of the ways to do that is to reinstall your OS X to make sure that everything permission wise gets put back to what it needs to be to work properly. Based of to the operating system that you say you have, I have provided the steps for reinstalling Snow Leopard. When doing this, it does not overwrite your personal data; it only touches the operating system.

  • Regarding shared file system requirement in endeca server cluster

    Hi,
Our solution involves running a single data domain in an endeca server cluster.
As per the documentation, endeca server cluster requires shared file system for keeping index file for follower node to read.
    My questions are,
Can I run the endeca cluster with out shared file system by having the index file on each node of the endeca server cluster?
Can dependency on shared file system be a single point of failure, if yes how can it be avoided?
I really appreciate your feedback on these questions.
    thanks,
    rp

    Hi rp,
The requirement for a shared file system in the Endeca Server cluster is a must. As this diagram shows, the shared file system maintans the index, and also maintains the state of the Cluster Coordinator, which ensures cluster services (automatic leader election, propagation of the latest index version to all nodes in the data domain). A dependency on a shared file system can be a single point of failure and requires to run a backup, -- this is a standard IT approach, that is, it is not specific to the Endeca Server cluster in particular.
See this section on Cluster Behavior, for info on how the shared file system is used (the topic "how updates are processed"), and on how increased availability is achieved.

How adutilities comes to know that the file system is shared file system ?
In multinode shared file system : if we want genearte message file we can invoke adadmin from any node and perform this activity. In this case, how adadmin knows that the filesystem is shared filesystem.

    Hello mike:
    Try this:

  • I NEED HELP QUICK! Its about SYSTEM PREFRENCES!!! :O

Well i downloaded a dock app the last week (btw im a mac newbie) anyway i downloaded and didnt want it. So i found it and deleted it. Not knowing i had deleted the wrong one and i only found out the other day that i had deleted it because i clicked dock prefrences through my dock and said it was unavailable. :/
    PLEASE HELP MEE!!!
Btw its the dock Prefrences on the system prefrences :S

    Hi again,
are you actually missing the 'Dock'  pane? (it's name is "Preference Pane")
Do you have another Mac around? You can copy the Dock pane from the other Mac. Here is where you find it:
    Go to: My Hard Drive/System/Library/PreferencePanes ➞ Dock.prefPane.
Copy that to your Stick, plug-in to your Mini & copy to exact the same place you got it from other Mac (in reverse).
If you can't do that then only way to get it back is to re-install your OS from your 'Mac OS X Install' DVD…
Don't worry, you will not loose anything when you install the OS over existing on Mini - it will leave your Applications & everything else intact.
This should take about 30 minutes - but you have to have the the original DVDs &/or full upgrade DVD to do that.
Then you'll have to download all the updates to the Mac OS & install those…
As you can see the copying from another Mac is the easiest way since it'll take 5 minutes...

  • I cleaned up my mac and now all my applications are gone. I try to open them and it has a question mark on the app icon. Everything from System prefrences, Everything in itunes, iphoto, preview and mail? Please help

I cleaned up my mac and now all my applications are gone. I try to open them and it has a question mark on the app icon. Everything from System prefrences, Everything in itunes, iphoto, preview and mail? Please help

These question marks are on your dock? And you can't open applications from your dock?
If so, try this: Open a new finder window and navigate to the Applications folder in your hard disk. The applications in question should still be in there (the Applications folder). So drag each of the application icons that you want to be available on your dock from the Applications folder onto your dock, one by one. Take each of your question mark icons that are on the dock and drag them off the dock to get rid of them. See if that fixes you up.
Now, if your hard disk no longer has an Applications folder in it, or the Applications folder is empty, you are going to have to reinstall OS 10.6 then do a software update to bring you back up to OS 10.6.8. You may be able to just go to the "optional installs" folder on the installer DVD and maybe all the stock applications are there -- I don't remember and I don't have an installer DVD handy to look. That would be way easier than doing a full blown OS reinstall. Also, as I recall, if OS 10.6 was on the computer when you bought it from the store, I think there should be an "extras" DVD that has a handful of applications that could be reinstalled from it, too.
