Sharing  & permisson Custom access (please don't post other threads)

I keep getting "The folder “” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents" I recently moved from leopard to snow leopard. I noticed my drive was doing this, then I changed the permission on my other actually hard drive to allow all and now the external hard drive will not allow me to access it. I am very very confused on the threads other people have posted. So please show me a very simple way of fixing this. Thanks

I'd LOVE to have a little sticky FAQ about forum posting.  This is exactly where I was hoping this discussion would lead!

While I understand that hardocre offenders aren't going to be swayed or even pay attention to this post, I'm hoping that I can stop the bleeding by getting dialog going to the effect that I mentioned to Ben above.  Also, maybe there are some borderline offenders who might be influenced by such a post.  Besides, it felt good posting it, even after leaving it on the screen for 10 minutes before posting.  (I usually let a potentially flammable post sit for at least that long before posting it.  You'd be surprised how many posts you withdraw after letting it cool off like that.)
We don't need to ban people like that.  It's like shooting people for jay-walking... Hmmm, maybe I'm on to something there... but I digress.  Repeat offenders, maybe.
#3 is an excellent idea.  Referring to other posts is an act of kindness and selflessnes even I am not capable of!
#4 is kind of what I was trying to do with this post.

    Yup same here
    I am running the latest iTunes, the latest updates to the OS and on an iMac 3.4GHz Quad core i7 with 8GB of RAM and the music stored on local HDD.
    Still locks up iTunes for between 2 minutes up to 20 minutes.
    Really annoying.
    If you find a fix please, please let me know, I have just been throwing hardware at it with no joy at all

    Can you please post your ADSL stats by following this direct link; http://192.168.1.254/ and go to A-Z (top right) and then ADSL Status and post everything including Line Attenuation, Noise Margin, Connection Speed, Errors etc...
    Also we need a speedtest just to have a look and make sure everything's okay? Use this link http://bit.ly/uViAXN and post all the required info Throughput, IP Profile etc..). If that one doesn't work then try this work around link http://bit.ly/tIPNYA .

    Can you also confirm if you're connected at the master socket or an extension? And what your type your master socket is according to this picture
    Lastly for now, call 17070 and Press Option 2 for the Quiet Line test and where possible use a corded phone as DECT handsets can pick up electrical interference?

    I am not sure why you get that error. One thing you can do is a SMC reset then try to format it again. However that being said I'm not fan of WD external HD's primarily because we see a lot of troubles with them on Macs. Their internal HD's are fine so that narrows it down to their enclosures. If the problem persists I'd return the drive and buy one of the following:
    OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series
    Lacie Quadra d2 series
    G-Tech G series
    SMC RESET

  • Help - Lion "custom access" permissions mess

    I should start with an apology... I know there are a lot of threads that dance around this very issue, but it's so much I can't make sense of it.
    So I'm asking anew...
    Here's the situation: After months of persuassion, I finally talked my wife into letting me upgrade her Macbook from Snow Leopard to Lion. After installing, I then ran software update and installed everything else recommended. Reboot and everythign seemed to go fine, but then when I tried to delete a few PowerPC apps, the computer kept asking for her password.
    Wanting to find out why on earth I had to retype the password with every toss of a file, I looked online and found someone suggesting I had to log her out as an admin and then log back in. Why that would work, I don't know, but I tried it. Big mistake.
    When I tried to log her back in to make her an admin again, I couldn't get the computer to accept her password. So I then logged out and tried to log back in with my admin account which is set up on the same computer. That worked to get me in, but still wouldn't allow me to upgrade her to an admin in the system prefs.
    So I THEN found this "resetpassword" trick using the Lion Recovery partition and terminal. I did that and was able to restore her password and while there, I also "reset to default ACLs and Permissions" or whatever it says inside this utility, with the logic that repairing permissions has always been a decent failsafe fix.
    Okay... after a reboot and we're back in... and I run into a new problem with not having permission to do much of everything.
    So, I open the "Get Info" on the hard drive to look at the permissions at the bottom of the info window. It says I have "read only" access. I figure this must be an error so, perhaps foolishly (or should I say probably foolishly), I grant Read & Write access across the board, so it reads like this:
    System - Read & Write
    Wheel - Read & Write
    everyone - Read & Write
    And then, don't cringe, I apply to all enclosed items.
    When this is done, I rebooted to the Lion Recovery partition and ran the Disk Utility "repair permissions" there, too.
    Upon reboot...  I remember Keychain First Aid and run that too. It has errors to fix but says it was able to repair them too.
    Right now... it all appears to be working fine, though it says I have "custom access" in the Get Info window for my HD.
    However, I can't shake the nagging feeling that I've just used a flamethrower to clean up the living room.
    For instance, I look now on my own Macbook and see that "wheel" and "everyone" in the Get Info window and see it's Read Only. And yet, I have no permissions problems right now at all.
    (Update: I tried setting hers back to match mine in the same way (via the Get Info window, apply, disk utility, reboot, etc.) and the permissions problems all came back. So I went and made it Read & Write for everyone again. However, this just can't be right.)
    Can anybody tell me (in easy terms, please) what I can do to get it back to what it should be?
    I've seen notes on a program on xnation.com that "fixes ACLs"... and a few posts with Terminal commands... but I'm hesitant to borrow somebody else's solution, just in case it's not so good of a fit or if I don't understand it.
    What do you think?
    P.S. I  promise to rate good solutions offered to up your point totals.

    Something like this?
    System - Read & Write
    Wheel - Read Only
    everyone - Read Only
    Yes.
    ...software from xnation.com that is designed to reset those ACLs?
    I've never heard of it. You already know how to reset user permissions.
    if the system seems to be working fine, does that mean something is still broken/in danger of corrupting or something?
    You set wide-open permissions on all files. That's insecure, and some things won't work at all, maybe not anything you use.

  • "You have custom access"??? (permissions issue)

    Apologies if this has been covered before but I have quite a few folders that say "You have custom access" in the Sharing & Permissions section of the "Get Info" Finder window, not "You can read and write" as I would expect. Some of these really do seem to have unusual permissions, such as an "(unknown user)" entry, but others appear to have identical permissions to those for which Get Info says "You can read and write."
    I suspect this is somehow related to some (but not all) of these folders originally being created in OS 10.1 (!!) & now in my Leopard file system courtesy of various Migration Assistant & Setup Assistant transfers spanning several Macs & hard drives since I played around with that ancient OS version.
    Can anyone help me understand why this is so & more importantly how I can set these folder's permissions to the default, non-custom ones, which I assume will say "You can read and write" in the Get Info window?

    Francine Schwieder wrote:
    This whole issue is very convoluted and confusing, with new bewilderments (at least bewildering to me) turning up every day.
    I agree completely! I keep hoping Apple will post some kbase articles or update Mac Help to explain more about the defaults & options, but so far the only things I have found are Mac OS X 10.5 Help: Sharing files on your network, Mac OS X 10.5 Help: Setting file-sharing options, & similar "lightweight" instructions which really don't say much more than I can discover by just poking around on my own.
    For myself, I simply gave up, cloned my Leopard install to the disk I had been using for Time Machine, and did an erase and install, then let the migration assistant that pops up as the install finishes copy what it wished how it wished from the cloned system. At least things now look consistent: no more "unknown" files, no ACLs where none should be in my home folder, all new files are saved to the apparent new standard: user francine uid 501, group staff gid 20 (of course yesterday I found out even that isn't as straight-forward as one might think, I'll spare your the details).
    Ironically perhaps, my Leopard install was done the same way (using Setup Assistant to copy everything possible from my Tiger clone, which is what I think you mean you used here) & it *did not* cause Spotlight to start indexing the Leopard volume or resolve any of the "unknown user" issues for me. This may have been because I messed around with permissions settings on some of my document files on the Tiger volume long ago when it had an additional standard account (since deleted), so that account's UID or GID could have been attached to a few files.
    Just to muddy the waters even more, I've discovered a file (/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preferences.accounts.plist) that contains an array of four essential properties of every account I've ever deleted since installing Tiger: the "UniqueID" (which appears to be the UID), the short & long user names, & the date deleted. This file apparently is created anew each time an account is deleted (except curiously its creation date is exactly one day later than that of the last account deletion) but it clearly includes the info from previous versions.
    Annoyingly, the Sharing Only user that I added that (I think) caused Spotlight to start indexing did not have the UID (& thus GID) of the deleted account I mentioned above, so the theory that the old account had something to do with it now looks dubious at best.
    The more I study this, the less it makes any sense.

  • Permission problem that won't die: You have custom access

    After upgrading from Tiger to Leopard I had so many permissions problems that I backed up all my docs, erased my Macbook Pro hard drive (first time since I bought a Mac in 1985 that I have EVER had to do this), and installed a 100% clean Leopard install (no upgrade from Tiger). I updated everything through Software Update. Then I copied back several folders from my backups.
    Permissions problems declined, but only from 100% to 80%.
    The problems fall into three categories.
    ONE: A folder seems to have normal permissions:
    jimw(Me) Read and Write
    staff Read only
    everyone Read only
    but at the top it says "You have custom access." (It should say "You can read and write.") That turns out to mean I can't edit, trash, or even move any of its contents without an Admin password. Copying the file into a virgin folder with correct permissions, then Applying them to enclosed items works sometimes but rarely. An ls command results in lines like this:
    drwxr-xr-x+ 11 jimw staff 374 Feb 14 10:09 jimw's old home folder
    0: group:everyone deny delete
    TWO: Same as above, but there is no staff entry in the table and "everyone" has "Read & Write" instead of "Read only".
    THREE: "everyone" appears twice in the table under Sharing & Permissions.
    Other threads suggest that one of these "everyone"s is left over from Tiger, but they have scary suggestions on how to fix the problem (see below).
    Yes, I have run "Repair Permissions".
    So I logged onto these discussions and discovered that I have company -- LOTS of company. And there are about 1,334,786 different proposed solutions, including some hairy ones with typos (like putting in single quotes where double quotes should be -- in Terminal).
    Carefully I tried a couple of these, and have wrestled the problem down to maybe 40% of its original size. And my heart leapt when one solution seemed to work on one of my biggest folders: sudo chmod -R -a# 0 FOLDERNAME.
    But trying it on a bunch of other folders only solved the problem for the documents inside, not their intervening enclosing folders. If I create a virgin folder structure I can copy all the docs inside folder by folder, then throw out the bad folders en masse. But that's too much work! And prone to error.
    How can I strip a bunch of ORDINARY folders of their inappropriate permissions so I can get on with my life?

    I HAVE FOUND GOD AND HE WORKS AT APPLE IN THE APPLECARE TECH SUPPORT DEPARTMENT!
    (First, let me apologize to people who find the above offensive on religious grounds... OK, now on to the details.)
    I am posting here the steps that a certain support guy (accessed through 800-APL-CARE) stepped me through. The solution is so simple that I am beginning to doubt my sanity. It may not work for everyone, but it seems to have worked for me. I'm leaving this thread "not yet answered" for a couple of days just to be sure, but I can say that MUCH of my problem is definitely different and is apparently 100% gone. I'll follow up later to be sure.
    Here are the steps this wonderful fellow stepped me through.
    1.
    Make sure things are not REALLY REALLY messed up. Click on your desktop so Finder becomes the active program. Create a new folder. Rename it from "Untitled folder". Throw it in the trash. Empty trash. If all these steps work OK with no demand for an Admin password, then your permissions and Users and Groups and all that are not TOTALLY messed up and you can proceed.
    2. (step by step for the inexperienced)
    Open your hard drive icon. Open the Users folder. Find your particular user folder (the one that looks like a house). Click on it ONCE to select it.
    3.
    Do a Get Info on your user folder (the house). Under Sharing & Permissions it should say "You have custom access" (which is normal for this folder and certain others, but not normal for an ordinary folder you created, say, on the desktop in step 1).
    The little table underneath that should have 3 entries. Mine reads:
    jimw (Me) Read & Write
    wheel Read only
    everyone Read only
    As you've guessed, my username is jimw, so of course your username should be there instead of the jimw.
    4.
    Click on the little lock in the right-hand corner waaaaay at the bottom of the Get Info window. (You may have to scroll down.) Enter your Admin password and click OK. The lock icon will turn into an unlocked icon.
    5.
    A little popup menu somewhat to the left of the unlocked icon will now become active (rather than its previous state of grey). It has a little cog wheel in it, and a teeny triangle indicating it's a popup. Click on it and hold: you should see one or two greyed-out choices in that popup, and one active choice reading "Apply to enclosed items". Choose it.
    Step 5 was the one that had messed up my drive on previous occasions, because (I think) it applied hidden things called ACLs to enclosed folders and files. But my support guy assured me that this step was OK and would fix my problem.
    6.
    You will probably get a dialog box asking for your Admin password again. Enter it and click.
    7.
    Wait. Breathe deeply. A progress bar will start spinning. Depending upon the size of your hard drive, it may take awhile.
    8.
    When the process finishes, close the Get Info window.
    9.
    GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE! THE PROBLEM IS FIXED!
    At least mine is, so far. For you techies, the proof to me that a huge step in the right direction has been taken is that an ls -l command in terminal NO LONGER produces entries like:
    drwxr-xr-x+ 11 jimw staff 374 Feb 14 10:09 jimw's old home folder
    0: group:everyone deny delete
    but instead produces entries like:
    drwxr-xr-x 11 jimw wheel 374 Feb 14 10:09 jimw's old home folder
    I am uncomfortable in Terminal and I don't really understand permissions and ACLs, but I think the significant differences are: no plus sign after the initial string of permissions, "wheel" instead of "staff", and NO SECOND LINE CONTAINING DENY DELETE.
    Apple: Can't you produce a tech note explaining this process?? It's really simple! Even a grown-up could do it! (Apologies if you already have and it was posted a month ago and it's highlighted in flashing red text on the discussions.apple.com website and somehow I missed it...)

  • Permissions = "Custom access" ? ? ?

    How I got into this mess is a sorry tale, which is hardly worth recreating. What I need is a way OUT of the mess.
    SYMPTOMS:
    My G5 has a 500 GB boot drive, and a 500 GB internal data drive (only data; no OS). The permissions are so bolloxed up that Get-Info shows Sharing & Permissions as follows:
    John (Me) = Custom
    John (Me) = Custom
    (unknown) = Custom
    everyone = Custom
    If I open a Finder window, andlocate the offending drive in Column View -- and click on it -- I get the following dialog: "The folder "DATA" could not be opened because you do not have access privileges."
    If I run Disk Utility, and click on Veryfy Disk, or Repair Disk, the result is "The volume DATA appears to be OK."
    But it's not OK. I cannot get access to the drive, or to the data on it.
    I want to regain access to this data drive. Will someone please tell me, what buttons can I press, to make the devil go away?
    TIA.
    John

    Hi,
    I see you guys have got some insight into the whole "custom access" issue... and I desperately need your advice... in terms I can understand (I'm baffled by a lot of this talk about which permissions I need, etc.).
    Here's the back story...
    1) I had recently updated my Macbook Pro to 10.5.5. And I noticed that my Internet connection would either drop or run glacially slow. Meanwhile, my wife's Macbook ran fine. So I figured something was up.
    2) I tried turning the Airport connection on and off, demanding a new IP, and all that. No luck. Zapping the PRAM once seemed to help. But very shortly we were back to slow speeds. Then I saw something online about trashing many network related preferences and the 'SystemConfiguration" file.
    3) I moved the recommended items out of their locations in the System folder, parked them in a new folder on the desktop (instead of trashing them) and rebooted. No change. And then I thought maybe it would be best instead to just put the files back and look into it later.
    4) When I put the files back, I noted that the system had created a new "SystemConfiguration" folder... which then moved out... and placed in the original SystemConfiguration folder. And that's around about where the real trouble seemed to begin.
    5) I rebooted and discovered that my Airport card was 'Not configured" or something like that. It was as if the card didn't exist. Same seems to be true of Bluetooth. The system just doesn't see it. What's more, I get a "Network Pane" that's completely blank. NO ports listed in the column on the left... NO user name.. etc. Even my "local host" name had disappeared.
    6) That sent me online and I found this article an on folders that have defaulted to a "custom access" discussion. And sure enough... the systemconfiguration folder I had dragged back in had the "custom access" label. So does the main folder/wrapper for my home directory. Plus, the same with many folders inside.
    7) I have "Batchmod" but don't know, in layman's terms, what I should change the permissions to. Am I "user"? Do I "strip the ACLs" or forget about them? Is there some other better option?
    8) I've seen people suggesting to go get a piece of the system network stuff from the pre-upgrade files. But I ran into another problem... related, I think, to all this. And that's simply that my Time Machine can't see the backup versions I did over a week ago.
    9) I'm wondering if I need to do an "Archive & Install"... but then worry it won't work because the busted network settings would come over with it. (This computer was upgraded to Leopard with Archive & Install.)
    10) So then I wonder if I should do a clean install... but I don't quite understand how to "just port back in the contents of your home folder." How does one do that without breaking the applications away from all the little things they installed so they could run?
    I'm sure there's information I'm not providing, simply because I don't know what you'd need.
    But what can I do?
    Hope to hear from you soon!

    Please Don’t Make Same Sony-Ericsson Mistakes
    by USER-986393 » Thu Oct 27, 2011 3:40 pm
    Congratulations on your Erricsson's share acquire, I must say i have been Sony phone holder from the day SONY CDM-Z1 was created, forced my self to stick with SE... and now happy to come back to SONY again. I would like to talk about couple of things...
    Response:
    The major fall of SE is the fact that they did not listen to fans and most importantly customers. we complained so much over Xperia X1 and Xperia X10 until SE forced us to purchase other brands due to lack of response. so please, responding to complaints is critical when there are so many better phone makers out there.
    Lack of future vision:
    Look at the Galaxy S, Galaxy Sii, Iphone... you know what they have in common? light years technology for the same price as Caved in SE phones. Arc vs Sii?... SE was against technology for some reason, for instance. who ever was against dual processor and how much it would attract customers, needs to find another company to put down. Lack of LTE?, how can someone not find that as something a cell phone can use in the future? Market share in USA? why would someone not give the US attention, no one buys a full priced phone these days, that only worked when there was no contracts. these days i don't mind a contract as long as i am getting a phone a i can not afford. also i never understood this frequency difference, why did SE wait until iPhone 4s marketed the idea a "world phone" that works anywhere? why did SE insist on making an American version and an international version? example ARC LT15A and ARC LT15i is it SO HARD to make a phone that has all the frequencies LT15Ai? really? who ever was against that idea needs to go as well.
    I will assume who ever is reading the example i mentioned above is grasping the importance of it... it's as simple as this SE would have been more successful had more people bought SE phones, i am interested in the ARC LT18A, well there is only LT18I that wont work 3g on At&t. here are the problems that you will face... 1 - a happy innocent customer that did not know that, purchased a LT18I (international) and realized SE customers service in Canada or USA that it won't work in the U.S. on 3g...   2 - a frustrated customer like me who knew about the difference from previous mistakes and decided to buy an iphone instead just bc of the being neglected or carelessness from SE towards people in the U.S.  either way, wither those two two points were shocking to you as a SE manager, or a common fact that is not important enough... that manager needs to go.  with a tahnk you note for loosing market share in the U.S. deserves an excelence in that actually.
    Wrong Focus, right focus was a little too late:
    SE phones especially in 2011 was way behind any other company in smart phones, yes the ARC S was maybe a nice attempt but simply not enough... the world is advancing really fast, if you dont catch the train, then your about to bankrupt. it took forever to jump on really powerful phones and instead there so many variations. you can get a cyber-shot but not a Walkman.. you can get a walkman phone but not as smart as the p900 you can get the p900 but not as slim as the p600. SE was competing with its own self ... lets FOCUS, get your stuff together and make a Quality phone not Quantity phone. (GOOD JOB ON THE TABLET) the variations are based on needs not confusing differences. The ARC was a great phone, but SE had missed the train.
    THE UPDATES:
    The most frustrating customer service i have ever experienced, and when updates come out, they come out first in Nordic places then in middle east country by country... giving every day more fuel to angry customers wondering when they will be lucky to get an update ... why can't there be one global update for all phones and different updates to phone carriers for each country. make it easier, it does not take a company purchase to do so.
    Announcements:
    it was frustrating, just like it is right now, i still don't know when ARC S comes out. oh wait i am in the U.S. it comes out "WHENEVER" does it look like i am happy? i need a new phone, how SE expect me to purchase an ARC S when i don't know how long i am waiting for it and there is GALAXY and Iphones released in the markets hovering around me every day?
    USA, USA, CHINA, USA:
    Why was the U.S. not a focus, please someone answer!
    Creativity:
    androids are awesome operating systems, they are simply great and simply work every single time you use them. i believe, i gave SE so many ideas, non of them were integrated. to be able to distinguish your self from the rest of the pack; you need to be the alpha. simply having the most powerful phone is one factor, Xmore R is another, crazy led designs. look at the Tablet S, it's not the thinnest, it's not the cheapest, it's not the most powerful, yet it's unique in design. and for the market with the dull flat tablets, who ever designed it should design your new phones. the ARC design was AMAZING but lacked the items that are enough to give it a competitive edge in the market.
    Charging:
    Why is it only micro USB is the main charger, Why can't it be that and another EASY WAY OF CHARGING, why do we have to wait tell apple go to conductive charging? SONY come up with two ways of charging, micro usb is great cause every one has either a BB or an android somewhere. but imagine just placing your phone on something without me connecting... I AM BUYING.
    Pricing:
    SE charges an arm and a leg, when Galaxy Sii and iphone 4s are $200.00... do you not thing there is something wrong here?
    Accessories:
    I have suggested times and times, make more accessories, lets compare phones covers for the Iphone and the Any SE phones... the amusing aspect is, why did not SE see what I see?
    Cool names PLEASE:
    the ARC is a way to start after 10 years of naming products like fax machines... I need to see Jima, president, awesome... less chemical equations of fax machine names. LT18a, imagine I tell my friends have you seen the LT18a or have you seen the Sony ARC?
    FM:
    Really?  your research says in 2011 people won't buy a phone without FM?  and the customers would also do the twist dance from the joy of knowing the phone has FM.  it's 2011, perhaps you need to look in your research again.
    SonyEricsson does not see the need for a dual processor for an android that won't support it yet:
    that right there shows the difference between a company with a long vision and another with a short one.  my answer to that statement, please set down get some popcorn as you are just about to watch S ii and iphone 4S a chance to be light years ahead of you, and sell millions of more phones than you.  just because someone that works at SE has a very short vision ruining a whole company. president of Syria bashar alasad, believes that his country is under control.  the achievements of democratic countries did not impress him and the fall of Lebian, Egyptian, and Algerian presidents did not get him to even think twice about what is happening.  it amazes me how people can be so selfish and short visioned.
    Waterproof:
    Great idea, where is the phone, i am in the U.S. while you are at it, let me suggest accessories.  a helmet accessory that would station that phone on my helmet while i am racing... right there i can buy a phone that is weather proof records 720 p and when i am done from my athletic even i can use it as a phone.  knowing SE, don't even think about that idea, and i will get an email saying we only have a shoulder accessory for now thank you for inquiring.
    Closing fan websites?
    xperiablog.net, um........ ?
    now there are people at SE that need to be promoted,
    Updates had gotten faster and better, but they still need more work
    unlocking the boot loader is a great i dea
    designs started becoming extra beautiful
    SE website is beautiful
    facebook page is great
    xmor r, phone screen size EXCELENT
    forum support is getting better
    there many many things I can bring to the table, question is, SONY are you going to do the same Mistakes? or am i going to changes? perhaps you need to hire me, so I can get something done. how open are you to changes? how open are you to listen to your customers and fans? how open are you to realize the completion and take actions to be ahead of the curve? how open are you to realize that the Video games on cell phones are only fun the first 5 minutes but after that iphone 4s is better?
    LTE, Gorilla Glass, conductive charging, Unique design, unified phone, focus on 1 - 3 phones for the whole year, interactive customer service, New logo, Battery performance, UNIQUE DESIGN, top notch camera, waterproof, why dual when you can go Quad... go in to the market with a bang and bigger bang with it's prices. Start cranking AT&T and Tmobile, Verizon and Sprint from now in the U.S. chop chop you have work to do...
    I wish you the best of luck SONY and hope to see interesting phones coming from your end.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    lov2bugu, you said things the exact way I wanted to express them! It was like watching me talking to a SONY’s CEO.
    I don’t really think they are not aware of the problems. SONY used to be the 27th largest company in the world, according to Forbes. They are now at the 456th place!!
    They are aware of their problems and I think, the move to buy the remaining stocks from Ericsson, is a move to bounce back into the market. They found the right time, where the stock is too low and the economics around the globe don’t  look promising enough. I have to recognize them, all the bad phases they went into this year … hacking attack, loss of their factory in London, global economic climate etc.
    But these are not excuses good enough not to produce quality, reliable and technologically advanced goods. I think that SONY is not to blame for the bad course SE has had. I think this is what SONY wants to revert. They want to “embody” all their technology … BRAVIA engines (TV Tech), Walkman and Cybershot tech (using Carl Zeiss lenses), VAIO (Comp tech) and finally PS3. Ericsson tried to integrate them, unsuccessfully.
    Overall, I thing SONY, did not have or did not attempt to have the control of SE, hence, the answer you got back from SONY “… anything related to SE must be posted on the website of SE”. I think they will bounce. Just give ‘em some time. I’m willing to give them time, but not too much though. Just because I’ve always loved this brand!

  • What bit of "Please don't phone me" doesn't BT get...

    What bit of "Please don't phone me" doesn't BT get?
     I have experienced a cataloge of corrosponce with BT dealing with the bad broadband speed issues that I have had on my connection since last november. Too long to list here see the link below
    Terrible broadband speed
     Its fair to say that individual BT operators and advisors have been courtious and have tried to be helpfull most of the time but...BT have failed to find a long term fix for my issues.
    The last month up until yesterday I was lucky enough to experience a wopping and reasonable steady 1.5 mbps...wow! Seriously it was fantasic! Compared to a miserable 0.3mbps or worse. I felt I was getting what I was paying for! Then the bill came in (and was wrong yet again!)! and coincidently? the speed returned to its former low!
     Without baffling the humble user with scientific terminology, it turns out the problem is caused by line noise - not of my own making! Well, I noticed that incoming calls on the landline telephone were knocking my broadband out, after a while I made the desision to dissconnect the phone because of the issues with calls knocking my speed down. I imformed as many of my familly and friends not to call me on my phone and use my cell instead. However I can't stop random incoming calls, which sends the blue lights on my hub to flickering orange. This in turn equates to the stupid adsl2 software that BT use, knocking down my profile and hence speed!
     When are BT going to get to grips with their stiffling system that takes up to ten days to recallibrate itself?
     Their old system used to work fine at this rural address, quickly reasserting itself if there was a line knockout or interference - which is common in rural locations. Now it seems in order for BT to advertise super fast speeds to most that can benefit from it who live within a couple miles of the exchange. The rest of us that don't, have to suffer for the sake of this new adsl2 system. Its a shambles and at times heartbreaking and BT still expect us to pay the same as anyone else!
     Dont be fooled. If you live in a rural location or more than two miles from the exchange, the chances are that if you are experiencing loss of BB speeds recently, whence before you had a reasonable service. Its down to the new BT adsl2 system they have brought in. Its not your fault, don't let the customer support advisors tell you otherwise! At least thats my experience!
     The new system is more sensitive to noise, true it may be marginally faster, but as it turns out at what cost?
     I have had a dozen engineers who have come round and each remarkably have "found and fixed the problem" then I get a reasonable speed for a few days before it drops again as of yet I have not had a pernament fix!
     The loss of speed issues have led to a series of 'knock on effects' including my wireless BB BT mobile going beserk leading to a £260.00 bill for one month!
    #Being charged £40.00 for Broadband phone calls I did not make - I had to call in the police for the theft of phone calls made before BT would take me seriously - they said there was no record and that it was impossible to hack BT broadband phones! In the end they found a 'mistake' but it was a **bleep** of a fight to get them to admit that!
    Even after that, they cut me off (for non payment of these calls) and are now trying to charge me a reconnection fee!
    Also I am paying for an 'unlimited' broadband package and broadband anywhere - which is a complete joke because I am lucky if I can get broadband anywhere at all!I know I really need to sort this out - but there is no one dpartment it seems that can deal with it all
    After my BT Broadband Anywhere phone freaked out (Down to issues related to my BT hub losing connections - I ended up asking BT Mobile to dissconect my gprs for fear of it happening again - even though I was paying for the 'unlimited 'gprs service) and the 'stolen' BB phone issues, I dissconected my wireless completely!
    So NO BB on my BT mobile, on average I am lucky if I get a week a month on maybe 1mbps, the other three weeks on 0.3mpps on my home broadband.
     The trouble is that I am so sick and tired of being pushed from department to department and repeating myself on a weekly or even daily basis. I can never get one individual who can deal with all my problems in one go, #I am absolutely fatigued with it all.
    Going somewhere else is not an option I am imformed where I live.
    I have written letters to the customer service department and they have phoned me back and said things often at times when I am off-guard , so its hard to remember the details.
    Now my policy is to have everything put in writing.
    Despite using BT's 'contact us' form to report the latest speed issues and ticking the box that says
    "respond by email" and stating "Please don't phone me" as well on my message body....I get a series of phone calls! Both on my mobile number and on my landline!
    No comprehensible message returned as requested by email but phone calls from polite and friendly Indian help advisors...and guess what?   The calls the BT staff have made on my landline, has knocked my profile down even further!
    Even though I headed my message with "Please do not phone me on my landline phone number"
    How ignorant is that?
    I have even asked for my landline calls to be diverted, but that costs £5.00 pm - I don't see why I should have to pay for this.
    What I would like is for one BT person who can sort out All of these problems for me
    (That'l be technical department, security department, billing department, sales department, customer service department and more and then back again - I hav'nt got the stomach or time for being pushed from pillar to post!)
    - but from BT that is probablly asking too much!
    I fell I have had so many problems with the BT Broadband service, with the time I have spent trying to get things sorted, BT should be paying me! And  they should take a good hard look at how their system works!
     Bt have a **bleep** cheek to charge me £150.00 per quarter for all this!
    My father pays £96.00 for this same service, gets 8.00mbpsm, can use his landline and hubphone, can use his wireless, plus BT vision as well - How fair is this?
    I think its time for Ofcom

    It would be Otello and not Ofcom but in my experience they are very much in the pocket of BT (not least since they are funded by the telcom companies).

  • My apple TV  can't download a movie without stopping several timese aftervindid the latest software update. Plus, I got a message that it could not connect to the iTunes server for a full day. Please don't tell me I spent all this money for nothing!

    After a day of my apple tv not being able to connect to the iTunes server, I am now able to connect but can't even download a movie. Please don't tell me all the money I spent on this system as well as content was a waste. What the heck is going on apple?!? You guys used to be the best!

    Thanks for running that test on the brand new library, jfinch420. I can add that Home Sharing seems to be otherwise working. Yesterday, as a test I shut off Home Sharing and rebooted the AppleTV and my iPhone Remote app stopped working. I reenabled Home Sharing and the app began working again. The Remote App requires Home Sharing to work. This would seem to indicate that Home Sharing on my AppleTV seems to be working.  So the problem for me is very specifically that all network services work on my AppleTV except the ability to access my iTunes library.
    I'm trying to think of what variables changed. iTunes was updated to v12.0.1.26 on October 16th, and there was an AppleTV update on November 17th, but my 2nd gen AppleTV is still running 6.2.1. There is no later OS for it. I was using my AppleTV to stream media from my iTunes library on the 26th. For the life of me I cannot identify what changed while I was away over the holiday. By November 28th, my AppleTV could no longer connect to my iTunes library.
    In addition, my AppleTV frequently crashes and reboots when accessing preferences from time to time. It's likely related. In fact, last week I changed my library name to see if the AppleTV would notice. I did it again a moment ago and my AppleTV crashed every time I selected "Computers". I rebooted iTunes and the AppleTV and that fixed the crashing problem. I don't know what it means, but I'm throwing it out there for what it's worth.
    I will check the following things next:
    1) Connect iTunes & AppleTV via ethernet to rule out WiFi router issues.
    2) Use a different iCloud account to enable Home Sharing.
    3) Wait for the weekend when my friend can use his iCloud info to test home sharing between his laptop and my AppleTV.
    4) Call Apple. Maybe there is a component on the AppleTV motherboard that has gone bad causing the problems.
    BTW, I have an enormous library, too, but your test ruled out library size as an issue.

  • How to set custom access denied pages in SharePoint 2013?

    Hi everybody,
    in SharePoint 2010 custom access denied or other error pages could be easily set by setting the new path to the webapp-properties by using webApp.UpdateMappedPage. In SharePoint 2013 this seems to be ignored. The MSDN-entry seems to be out of date and just
    copied from SharePoint 2010:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.sharepoint.administration.spwebapplication.updatemappedpage.aspx
    A possible workaround could be writing a HttpModule that checks the requested url for accessdenied.aspx and redirects to a custom page but there must be another more best practice way to achieve this behaviour??

    I found a workaround to redirect to a custom access denied page but I'm not happy with it.
    I created a HttpModule which uses static method SPCustomRedirect.RegisterRedirectHandler to register a class inheriting ISPCustomRedirectHandler to the current HttpContext. In this class there is a method GetRedirectUrl that returns the path to my custom
    access denied page.
    Now at last a value must be written to the HttpRequest.Querystring named "CustomRedirect". But to add something to the QueryString-NameValueCollection I must use reflection to make it writable because it's readonly. After setting the value, I reset the property
    to readonly.
    For clearness, I post the code-snippet from the HttpModule below:
    HttpRequest request = HttpContext.Current.Request;
    NameValueCollection QS = request.QueryString;
    QS = (NameValueCollection)request.GetType().GetField("_queryString", BindingFlags.NonPublic | BindingFlags.Instance).GetValue(request);
    PropertyInfo readOnlyInfo = QS.GetType().GetProperty("IsReadOnly", BindingFlags.NonPublic | BindingFlags.Instance);
    readOnlyInfo.SetValue(QS, false, null);
    QS["CustomRedirect"] = "CustomAccessDenied";
    readOnlyInfo.SetValue(QS, true, null);
    SPCustomRedirect.RegisterRedirectHandler("CustomAccessDenied", new CustomAccessDenied());
    This is the redirectHandler-class I register in the last line:
    public class CustomAccessDenied : ISPCustomRedirectHandler
    public string GetRedirectUrl(string key)
    string serverRelativeUrl = string.Empty;
    var ctx = HttpContext.Current.Items["DefaultSPContext"];
    if (ctx != null)
    serverRelativeUrl = ((SPContext)ctx).Web.ServerRelativeUrl;
    if (serverRelativeUrl.Equals("/"))
    serverRelativeUrl = string.Empty;
    return string.Format("{0}/_layouts/15/myCode/CustomAccessDenied.aspx", serverRelativeUrl);
    This works fine but I really don't like the need to add a value to the querystring by reflection or the need to do this for every page-request...
    What's your opinion for this?

  • "Please don't reply to this email" Grr

    Is it just me, or does anyone else think it's really rude when people send emails with wording such as "Please don't reply to this email – it's been automatically generated by our computer. If you need to get in touch, please use the contact links below."?
    You can pretty much guarantee that none of the contact links will cover the subject of the original email. The impression it gives to me is one of a company that likes to tell me whatever they want, but isn't remotely interested in what I think as a customer.

    No, it's not just you
    But mine did have a link which (uniquely identified me) to a feedback survey
    And mine WAS because they were interested
    I received it on Saturday (21/08 at 21:05)
    It came from 'BT eContact Survey' (info@edigital********.***)
    Dear (my full name),
    You recently contacted BT and they'd like to hear what you thought about the way they fixed the problem, so much so they've asked us to ask you some questions. We really hope you can spare a few minutes as they're really keen to learn from your experience.
    Please click on the following link below to provide your feedback. The survey will only take 5-10 minutes to complete.
    (link removed)
    Many thanks,

    I have made contact with the CEO, a rep from BT, the mods and via an online help link.
    My guess is it's from the help link.
    I'll never do that again!!
    and the problem wasn't fixed!!!

  • Leopard install default permissions: Custom access

    Hello,
    I am a very new mac user. Only bought my first iMac 1 month ago. I really liked the experience so far.
    I recently upgraded to Leopard, and i had no problems at all (no blue screens, or locked users).
    The problem i am going through right now, is about user permissions.
    If i do 'Get Info' of my primary hard drive (the one Leopard is installed on), i get 'You have custom access'. I was expecting 'You can read & write'.
    I've read a lot about these permissions. I tried a lot of things but nothing worked for me.
    To be exact: i am using a leopard installation now, which has been installed from an empty hard drive (before the installation started, i erased everything. Just to make sure there is no conflict with the previous version, tiger).
    I've upgraded from tiger, clean installs, and fresh installs (like the one i am using now) all to get the same situation. I really hope this is not intended.
    Seen as I am a administrator, i really like to control where i want to write.
    I've tried the following:
    -i used Tinkertool System to change ACL's. Finally i got the '/' to show me 'read and write' but i had to change the ACL for every file manually, and at a certain moment i couldn't start my system preferences.
    -i tried the 'chown -R -N'. Didn't change a thing.
    -i tried the 'chown -a# 0 username' (username is babyCreative). Got a message telling me 'No ACL present'...
    Now i am working on a fresh format (so the permissions are still the ones, set by default). I can actually do the work i need to do, but i don't feel very 'okay' with this permissions-situation.
    PS: what really bothers me is the following: when launching leopard for the first time, and checking those permissions IMMEDIATELY, it tells me 'Read and write'. Only later on, all of a sudden, it changes into 'Custom access'. (right now it already is 'read only, yet i am copying files on it)...
    Is there somebody that can help me out with this?
    Any help is much appreciated.
    (excuse my bad english ;))
    Message was edited by: babyCreative

    This might be me turning crazy... but right now... My permissions on the primary drive have changed again... Permissions are now 'Read and write'.
    when i check out the owner of the drive, i see 'root' is the owner of the primary drive.
    I suspected to see my username there...
    Anyway: right now my permissions seem to be okay... Will evaluate this during a few days, and post the outcome here...
    (i feel pretty bad now: been wasting days to this... Only now realizing the following: patience is a virtue... (so far))
    thx for you reply though
