Sharing ripped tunes

I have a large library of MP3s, all ripped from CDs I own. I have a shared family computer (a MacMini), and my itunes library is set up and seems peachy keen for personal use.
But I want to be able to share the files I have with other members of my family, so they can sync their ipods to use these songs if they want to. I know that normal sharing doesn't allow this, and that new "home sharing" feature only pertains to files purchased thru the itunes store (I have no such files).
So I thought, hey, I'll create a new user account on the home computer called "tunes", and create a new itunes library by doing a mass import of my personal music folder, and bob's your uncle. Then everyone can just log in as that user and sync their ipods using their preferred playlist.
So I diddled the permissions on the appropriate files and directories (I'm a Unix guy), and did the import. The files showed up in itunes, but almost all of the meta-data was lost. So is it being stored in some external file on my home dir? Is there any way of telling itunes, "hey, push the meta-data into the actual song files"? Is there a better way to achieve this kind of within-the-family sharing?
Thanks for any help.

no it doesn't. you can share any media files using home sharing.

No, it's done on the computer, it's just done on the web and not through iTunes. I guess you could do it on the iPhone, but it would be easier to do on the computer.
Just go to the site linked above, then click on the big blue button and fill out the neccessary information.

  • IPod not playing re-ripped tunes with higher bit-rates

Since I got my iPod and have more storage I have been slowly re-ripping some of some tunes at a higher bit rate. iTunes doesn't appear to try to sync these songs and re-upload them to the iPod.
What happens is that the song stops playing part-way through the song. My guess is that it is due to the file size of the old (lower) bit-rate, as if it still thinks the EOF is at the same spot even though the file is now larger. It's almost as if the index doesn't get updated properly somehow.
I've tried deleting all the songs on the iPod and even doing a restore, but that doesn't always fix it. Some songs do it, some don't.
I know the rips are good because I can play them all the way through with either iTunes or Media Player.
Any help on getting it to sync them properly?

I assume that I have to re-rip the songs at the higher bit rate, unless there is Is there an easy way to do that without re-ripping them.
Assuming you want the higher audio quality (and not just a puffed up version of the same low quality track) you will have to re-rip from the CDs.
Also, what happens to the lower bit rate songs in my playlists, especially if I delete the lower bit rate versions from my library?
Under certain conditions, iTunes will recognize the CD and ask you if you want to replace the existing versions.  Say yes, and the rip process will automatically do the replace.
In case it does not ask, just go ahead and rip, and then do the replacements manually.

  • Sharing I-tunes with hole computer

Can anyone tell me how to set i-tunes and i-photo to be shared with other users on the same computer?

Can anyone tell me how to set i-tunes and i-photo to be shared with other users on the same computer?
Maybe I can walk you through how to do this but I'm not sure if this will work.
Try these steps as they will not harm your original files.
    1) Open the 'Finder' to your boot up hard drive and select it. Select the "Users" folder then select the "Shared" folder from this window.
    2) Open another "Finder" window by pressing 'command+n' then select your user home folder, then the Music folder and then the iTunes folder.
    3) Right click on the iTunes folder and select 'Make Alias' to create a folder named "iTunes alias".
    4) Drag the "iTunes alias" folder to the "Users/Shared" folder in the other "Finder" window.
    5) Log out and login as another user & see if you can add the "iTunes alias" folder as the iTunes Music Folder Location from the iTunes Advance Preferences.
Then let me know if this worked because then I can tell you how to add iPhoto as well.
    Good Luck.

  • Difference between iTunes Home Sharing and Tune Ranger

Could someone describe the differences between the Home Sharing feature in iTunes and the product Tune Ranger? I guess I'm trying to find out if the Tune Ranger product is worth having if I've got Home Sharing enabled on all my iTunes machines.
    TIA
    -JP

Home Sharing just makes the tracks available for copying. It does not do the actual copying itself; you have to select what you want to copy. It's in principle no different than using a CD, USB flash drive or other external media, just more convenient. Utilities such as Tune Ranger are designed to keep two iTunes libraries identical, so it will identify and copy any changes automatically. Which you choose will depend on what you want, identical libraries or just the ability to copy some content from one computer to another.

  • HT3819 sharing i tunes library on the same computer with different users

How do I share my library on the same computer switching to a different user?

If you want all users to be able to access the same music, but with different libraries, NikkiG's advice is spot on. However, I thought I'd throw in my 2¢ since I just set this up for a friend.
If you want all your users to have exactly the same library, and not just access to a shared library, do the following:
-move the entire "iTunes" folder (~/Music/iTunes) into the Shared folder or to separate drive.
-in each user's account, remove the iTunes folders (or just move them to a new location until you're positive this method works for you)
-pop open Terminal.app (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and here's where it gets a little dicey; type the following into the command line:
    ln -s /Users/Shared/iTunes/ ~/Music/iTunes/
What this does is create a symbolic link (think alias, but more technical and powerful) between the iTunes folder in the Shared folder, and each user's iTunes folder. This way, each user is directly accessing the iTunes library, and not just through the shared area in iTunes itself. This allows them to add/remove music and playlists to the same library.
HOWEVER, this method will mess up if you have multiple users logged in and using iTunes at the same time.

  • Sharing I tunes music library between different user logins on same PC

Due to my computer crashing I recently bought a new PC running Microsoft Vista. I am attempting to set the PC up so that different members of the family can have their own login. I have downloaded I tunes 7 and it shows on each desktop. My problem is that I cannot figure out how to share the music library between each login.

  • Playing unprotected ripped tunes on other MP3 players?

My friend has an ipod formatted for Windows. She set the preferences to import files in an MP3 format. She ripped (imported) unprotected songs, in this iTunes MP3 format, from CDs.
They played on her iPod, no problem.
But when she tried to import them into a generic (non-Apple ipod) MP3 player those files would not import.
She was told by the manufacturer of this generic player that iTunes MP3 files are not true MP3 files.
    Is this accurate?
Also, read in another discussion that others have had this problem and that using Windows Media to rip an iTunes burned CD would be the way to go. This is what was written:
"The only way I have found to use iTunes songs on my MP3 is to burn my playlist to disk using Itunes burn disk. Then using windows media player version 11 "rip" the CD to the library. This will put it in a wma format that can be read by you MP3."
Is that the only way around this problem or is there some easier way to get unprotected iTunes imported songs to play in a non-ipod player?
    Thanks, Panther

She was told by the manufacturer of this generic player that iTunes MP3 files are not true MP3 files.
    Is this accurate?
No. They are regular and "true" mp3 files.
Make sure the files are RIP'd with a compatible bitrate for the mp3 player.

  • Cant play ripped tunes from second computer on ipod please help!

my main computer is not connected to internet as it is used for work. it holds my library. this computer is 2nd and is connected. i rip purchased cds onto the connected computer to get album info but cannot put them on my nano. i get a message saying "...cannot be played on this ipod". strangely they can be put on other peoples ipods. can i only use my main computer to upload ripped cds or is there a way around it? it is driving me crazy!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Can you play the songs on the computer? Do they work on the computer?
Also, in iTunes go to edit-->preferences. Click the Advanced tab. Click the importing tab under that. Set Import Using: to AAC Encoder. The Setting should be High Quality. Click OK.
Now, right click one of the songs in iTunes that will not transfer. Go to convert selection to AAC. See if the converted version transfers.
    Finally, see this link...

  • Being "forced" to share i-messaging with ios6 upgrade on a shared i-tunes account

We have 4 Apple users all on 1 Apple ID to share i-tunes downloads.  I am the primary and just upgraded to ios6.  Now, we all get each other's i-messages. When I contacted Apple, they said the only fix is 4 separate i-tunes accounts and then we would have to pay for everydownload on each account?     Anyone have any other suggestions?  This upgrade feature is TERRIBLE!

You don't have to use a different Apple ID for iTunes to fix this.  You can continue to share one Apple ID for purchasing from the iTunes and app stores and still separate your iMessages.  To do so, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive on your devices and do one of the following:
Either uncheck the email address shown under "You can be reached by iMessage at" on all of your devices; or
If you want to continue to receive iMessages at this email address, on all but one of the devices, tap the Apple ID at the top, sign out, then sign back in using a different Apple ID (so all devices will be using a different Apple ID for iMessage).  As mentioned, you can continue to share an Apple ID for purchasing from the iTunes and App stores and still using a different ID for other services such as iMessage, FaceTime, etc.

  • Ripped tunes won't sync to my iphone5

I used to be able to transfer music from a cd, to my itunes, to my iphone no problem.  Now I transfer cds to itunes and they will play on my computer.  I sync to my phone and the songs appear, but if I select the song it will not play and will skip to the next purchased song.  I have many cds I have loaded and this just started.  At first it was annoying that I couldn't add anything new.  Today it actually stopped playing all of the songs that I have added to my phone.
Please help!  It ***** to have a collection of music and not be able to add it to my phone.

Thanks but I don't want to sync through iCloud as it seems to cause havoc with my calendar entries (although I have no choice for Notes for some reason Apple had the bright idea of removing the Notes option from iTunes.)
Using iTunes is working well for Calendar and Contacts but not Reminders...

  • Sharing an i-tunes library on the iPad

    Hi All
    Happy New Year
Is it possible to view my shared i-tunes library on the iPad over a wifi network and to play songs and videos etc... from this library without actually downloading them onto the iPad. Very similar to what the apple tv (2nd gen) does but in a mobile manner.

  • ITunes 6.0.1.3 Sharing Problem

I am having some trouble viewing shared music through iTunes. I have the "look for shared music" box checked. If I choose to share my library, others can see it; however I cannot see theirs. I can however view shared Limewire Tunes though. Any idea as to why I can't view standard iTunes libraries that are being shared?
    Thanks!

    Hi iFriend,
try this, it worked for me:
    1) first of all, uninstall QuickTime and older versions of iTunes from your PC, using the "remove" button in the "install applications" tool that you find in the windows control panel.
    2) reboot the system
    3) turn off the windows firewall application; go into the windows control panel, double click on windows firewall and disable the firewall option
    4) if you have one, disable your Anti-Virus application; i mean its real-time protection.
    5) probably it's not necessary, but for being sure... download and launch the standalone installer of QuickTime (latest version)
    6) download and launch the iTunes + QuickTime installer from this web address
    7) as an option, i suggest you to download and install also iTunes Art Importer. It's a nice application, that allows you to import from the internet directly into iTunes the album ArtWorks of the selected tracks in iTunes. I installed it, and it works very well with iTunes 6.
    8) after all the installations, remember to enable both firewall and anti-virus previously disabled!
as i said, probably the 5th passage is not necessary, but i did it and it worked!
if you have any questions or feedbacks, just relpy to this topic. stay iTuned!
    bye, bye,
    Marco
