Shell extensions and key stroke capturing...

Hello. Me and my team are working on a project which converts English input from a QWERTY keyboard to Unicodes local Indian languages like Kannada, Tamil etc. We're using Java and SWT for UI. The program should run in such a way that once the program is running, wherever the user enters, he should be able to see the unicodes/indian language output. That is, the program should be a shell extension or a it must run in the background and capture the keystrokes of the active window the user is using. We are developing this software for both windows and linux. So is it possible to create shell extensions or implement the background window(process)?
Are there APIs in linux to capture key strokes?? Is it possible to use Win32 WinHooks in windows to capture the key strokes??

Are there APIs in linux to capture key strokes?? Is it possible to use Win32 WinHooks in windows to capture the key strokes??Those are not java questions. Programming forums specific to the OS will provide the answer. Or docs for that matter.
... which converts English input from a QWERTY keyboard to Unicodes local Indian languagesThat by itself doesn't make much sense unless you are talking about language translation rather than characters.
The ASCII code set which would normally represent the entire english character set, is part of unicode. So no conversion needed.
But perhaps you merely wish to map set of keystrokes into other characters? I would strongly suppose that at least windows already supports this in some format so I am not sure why you need java in the mix. Certainly, for example, if you had a computer set up to display another language character set and you want to put a key stroke interceptor in place that should be possible. And if the computer is not set up to display the language then what is the point?

  • My G5 won't boot up. The Gray screen comes on and it thinks about it until the fan revs up like it is about to explode. A friend said to start it up with the OS disk and then go to utilities. Didin't work. Any suggestions? Isn't there a key stroke to help

    Oh, so this is where I ask my question. Sorry, first time here. As I was saying in my long intro, the gray screen come up and the thing is spinning at the bottom, but nothing happens. Then the fan starts reving up like it is about to explode and I have to manually shut it off. A friend told me to start it up with the OS disk and then go to utilities. I couldn't find the thing, so I went out and bought another. Needless to say, it didn't work. Is there a key stroke to help jump start the machine? How can I get into this thing? I would prefer not to take it in because there are a lot of things on there I don't want just anyone to have access to.Thanks, in advance, for your help!

    Make sure to have multiple backup sets and of your system so if there is a serious problem, you can just erase and restore to be back runninig.
    Sounds like your G5 though needs PMU reset, not PRAM, and the best way for those is to clear nvram instead. might even want to check for dust; tell what System Profile says (later) as to "PowerMacX,Y" or "MacProX,1"

    The Utility menu is on the menu bar of an "OS X Install DVD" and at the point where you get to but stop at "install....' for OS X. you probably do need to install OS X on another drive to work from.
    Oh, a real severe issue and damage to the drive directory or filesystem CAN in cases prevent booting from DVD (the system still tries to find and see what boot volumes are present) and can help to pull or disconnect the drive. Putting a drive in a FW case to turn on after startup is very useful.

  • IS there an easy way to execute a shell command and capture its output...

    From an application? I am thinking of using fork and then waiting for the PID to finish and write the output to a file which I then read, but this seems clunky. Also there are big warnings about frameworks getting hosed if you use fork, although the "Forked" process will exec the shell command and the one that gets the PID the original process might be 'safe' from this framework corruption. I am not certain of this, it is just a guess.
    If there was something like a process class where I could specify the executable and parameters, and read from it's std out until the process completed, that would be better. Or even get a callback when the process exited and an asynchronous callback for each line of data it produced.

    That was just in response to OrangeKay implied accusation that I was some kind of hard-core Microsoft programmer that sneered at apple programmers.
    You may want to book mark this, I will go over a brief history which should clear a lot of things up, about me, and about what I am doing.
    Lets turn the clock back to 1998: I graduate from a university with a BS in Computer science. I had been interning at a local defense contractor writing missile testing software. This was on a proprietary hardware and so there was no "Microsoft" involved. At this point I think Bill Gates = Satan. Microsoft = Kingdom of Evil.
    I get a job as a video game programmer. I write code from the Playstation, then the Playstation 2 and Gamecube. I do this for several years and again I have zero interest / knowledge of the Microsoft world beyond it being the OS which I am forced to use to play my games on. I had fought this by trying to use OS Warp and other things, but eventually since I mainly had a PC for games I had to get a windows OS, the first being NT 3.51 and then Win98 cause NT4.0 didn't support past directx 3 and everyone was using directX 5 or 6 (I do not remember).
    As video game companies go, they do not last. Everyone wants to write video games, anyone with some cash wants to start a company. 1 in 1000 will make it 5 years. Needless to say, as our company began to tank, I got laid off, along with my entire team. I have cash in the bank, no big deal, right?
    Well the economy started to suck, video game developers were closing down like crazy so the market was saturated with x-video game developers. 2 Years go by, no job, and almost no money. Then I get a call from some guy who wants me to come for an interview about 75 miles away. It is in a place I do not want to go. So they interview me, and ask me a bunch of general programming questions.
    I leave the place, and by the time I get home there is a message on my machine asking me if I would take the job at a ridiculously high salary (I live in an area where the cost of living is very low). Well I am about out of money and its a job offer with a huge salary, so I take it.
    I get there and guess what? I get to work on this "agent" that runs on windows boxes. I have NO IDEA how to program on windows. Windows is evil, why would I want to taint myself with this vile Microsoft APIs? I really have no choice, I have to learn how to develop on windows. I get to use visual studio 6, which I do not understand because I used the Borland compilers (Borland != Microsoft).
    Well I start to slug through it all and get familiar with MSDN and CodeProject and CodeGuru. As the years pass, I begining applicate the examples and detailed documentation that MSDN has. I have a start page on MSDN which covers every category of operation which will take you through a tree of choices and lead you to the exact area related API calls you will need to use to do whatever you want. Now I do not think MS = Evil anymore. I switch to DevStudio 2005 which is really nice. The debugging, IDE, and everything is great.
    Now the other half of this application resides on a server. That server is a Linux box, and the server app is written in Java. My stuff is still C++.
    One day, I get a request, and a eMac with 10.4 PPC to make a Mac version. Now I am at the point of Mac programming as I was with Windows when I started. I didn't know anything about it. I was looking for CodeWarrior cause I used that in the past, but alas, CodeWarrior is no more. I get XCode. I see all sorts of options to make a project. BSD project, Carbon, Cocoa, etc... What the heck any of these. I can guess the BSD one is very basic, but I do not understand Carbon vs Cocoa.
    So what do I do? I make a basic carbon app and make a basic Cocoa app. The carbon app looks like some kind of C++ framework. The Cocoa app? "Is this another language like Java or C#? It doesn't look like a C++ language."
    Guess which choice I make. Carbon. I struggle through this looking at the docs, posting on CodeGuru and whatnot until someone finally tells me about these forums and warns me about how unfriendly people are. So I make an account and start asking questions. I eventually get my app to be multi-platform to run on windows and Mac by using some API abstractions which are easy to do since I had abstracted the Windows API by my own class wrappers.
    I ask a lot of questions, very few are ever answered because I am not asking about simple things, like making windows and how to get button clicks and that stuff. I am asking stuff like, "How do you change the DNS? or How do I know when a user is about to log out?" Currently on my side list as I type this, I have 27 unresolved questions. I probably found workaround for most of them, or figured it out eventually.
    On this forum mostly people are helpful when the do respond, except for OrangeKay. He definitely has a chip on his shoulder.
    Over the past few years my Opinion of MS has improved greatly while my opinion of Macs (from the programmer's point of view) has dropped considerably. XCode still isn't as good as VS6 which is like 15 years old, never mind Dev studio 2005 or 2008. The documentation is scattered, not easy to find, occasionally wrong, or simply missing. The examples may not even compile or contain non-existent functions. It is unbelievable how bad it is.
    If Steve Jobbs wants to really get a large coder population he ought to spend some of those billions (or is it trillions) of dollars on a team that will re-write the current documentation in a correct, easy to understand, with full examples, arranged in a logical manner for everyone to use. He should say, "See MSDN online? I want something like that, only better, it has to be MUCH better." Then he should say to the XCode team, "Look at DevStudio 2008. XCode should do EVERYTHING that does. Once that is done, IMPROVE XCode even more to make 2008 look like a joke."
    To bad the Developer aspect of the "Apple Experience" has not gotten "End User" treatment. Then it would be a joy to develop on Macs.
    So here I am asking for help on certain things. You wonder why I do not use Cocoa. Maybe I should, maybe I shouldn't. My first look didn't look promising, and a quick look at the docs is all about GUI's. My app has NO GUI. Again, Cocoa? Maybe it will still work, but the examples and stuff I see are all about GUIs.
    When I get time, I will look at cocoa even further. MFC on windows is MOSTLY about GUI stuff, but there is a small section of it that does not deal with GUIs. CString is a great MFC class. I had to get rid of it though cause Mac's do not have a similar class. I use CStdString which is a platform agnostic CString replacement.
    I hope you are all a little more enlightened. BTW my Application which runs on Mac's and PCs on no less then 3 MILLION Machines has not crashed ONCE in the past 2 years. There have been bugs, but nothing that crashed it. The bugs were mostly unforeseen situations, like what if the guy has 15 network adapters that are all LIVE? I didn't plan for that, there were complications, the server got some strange data, but it didn't crash (My app, not the server. It crashes on occasion still). Are there bugs in my code? I am sure there are, but I do not know of any, because if I did, it would be fixed.

  • How do I set the description, verion number, ... of my shell extension?

    I have sucesfully created a shell extension to generate thumbnails for my custom file format, but now I'ld like to include some description and version information with it. So far my search i nthe documentation for how to include this has been fruitless.
    Can someone enlighten me?
    Side note: Is there some easy way to see which shell extension have been registered on a computer? (the only thing I've found so far is ShellExView (www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html) which also includes facilities to disable/enable particular extensions.
    I wouldn't recommend the latter to anyone though: the only way to get my extension working again after disabling and re-enabling it with ShellExView was to restore my computer to a restore point I was lucky enough to have made before tampering with ShelExView).

    If CNN fills the entire screen from top to bottom, Firefox might be opening in "full screen" view. The F11 key switches between regular and full screen views.

    * Menu bar (optional)
    * Tab bar
    * Navigation toolbar (main toolbar)
    * Bookmarks toolbar
    * additional toolbars created by Add-ons

  • How to create new file extension and associate an application with it?

    Hi,
    I want to create a new file extension named ".emsof" and
    associate any text editor with it like notepad++ in windows 8.1
    Moreover all of these files should be searched by having filter of "*.emsof" like any other ordinary files.
    Please guide me about hoe to do it?
    Thanks.

    Hi BurrWalnut,
    Thanks for the help.
    Will this command also allow me create and save file with .emsof extension and  to filter files through .emsof extension (Like we can filter through .doc or .txt extension)???
    1. I don’t know what you mean by ‘filter’. In your initial post you mentioned searching, if that’s what you mean, you can search for any extension.
    2. An easy to understand example of the assoc and ftype commands is a .txt file, which we all use in Notepad:
    Typing assoc .txt in a cmd prompt will return txtfile (the file type).
    Typing ftype txtfile will return %SystemRoot%\System32\notepad.exe %1 (the full path of the program and %1 representing a passed parameter).
    Alternatively, look in the registry hive HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT for .txt and further down for txtfile.
    3. If you add an entry that is later unwanted, you can easily delete it by typing assoc .emsof= and pressing Enter. Then delete the filetype by typing ftype myext= and pressing Enter. You can, of course, just delete the entries in the registry (nor recommended
    for beginners).
    4. Test it out now but be aware not to use extensions or filetypes that currently exist.
    5. Display all extensions and their associated file types by firstly copying the following 4 lines:
    assoc >"%userprofile%\desktop\assoc.txt
    start notepad "%userprofile%\desktop\assoc.txt
    exit
    cls
    Press the Windows Logo key+X (or right-click or press and hold the bottom left corner) and choose Command Prompt/Windows PowerShell (Admin). Using the mouse right-click, paste the 4 copied lines to the Command Prompt window. A .txt file is created on the Desktop
    and Notepad will open and display the list. The list represents the registry keys located in the merged HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. In the left pane, look for the extension, for example .txt. The (Default) field in the right pane contains the file type, e.g. txtfile.
    6. Now display all file types and their associated programs by substituting the above 4 lines with these:
    ftype >"%userprofile%\desktop\ftype.txt
    start notepad "%userprofile%\desktop\ftype.txt
    exit
    cls
    Another .txt file is created on the Desktop and Notepad will open and display it. This list represents the registry keys in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT further down beyond the extensions. Look for the file type, for example txtfile, then click or tap shell\open\command.
    In the right pane, the (Default) field shows the full path of the program that opens it, e.g. notepad.
    7. NOTE. In operation, any keys in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes (current user) take precedence over those in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes (all users) and both keys appear as the merged HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Any changes should be made to HKCU and
    HKLM. The HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT keys are intended to be read from, not written to.

  • Save for Web keyboard key stroke not worky

    I'd swear I've asked or seen this discussed in these forums...but I can find no thread, even when I search for my own screen name. At any rate, I think it also happened to me back in version 6. I'm now in version 8 on a Mac.
    The symptoms are the same as the last time this happened. The "shortcut" key strokes (on the Mac) are command + shift + option + S (probably use 'alt' instead of 'option and "control' instead of 'command' on Windows?). This will usually show a brief darkening of the File menu, but nothing else happens. Until...the same keys are pressed again! Of course, mousing to the menu item works fine, but I have managed to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome and still press all four keys with one hand! Sometimes I get my cat to help...
    Since Adobe is gracious enough to provide about three dozen various pref files, it should be a breeze to start archiving them and deleting the originals. NOT! However, in my searching for the likely pref file, I have discovered that the "Adobe Save For Web 8.0 Prefs" file seems to be AWOL on my System! I have over a dozen backups of that file in Time Machine, despite the fact that they all show exactly the same Modified date, which would normally be the only reason TM would save another copy of the file. This may also indicate why the settings for the Save For Web dialog never remember the last used settings; the file thinks it is getting written to but never changes its Modified date even thought that 'state' is obviously recognized by the OS. But that's all beside the point and I digress...
    SO...does anyone remember the 'trick' for getting PSE 6/8 to remember the Save For Web keystrokes the first time they are used, instead of waiting for 'verification?'
    Thanks!

    Barbara B. wrote:
    Uh oh. You should have had an uninstaller in the PSE 8 folder in applications. I'm afraid you may have set yourself up for bigger problems by doing it this way. You may well find that you will eventually need to download and run the CS4 cleanscript to get straightened back out again.
    You may be correct, but I've had no other problems after all the different un-install methods. The only pieces that are hard to find are those that Adobe chooses to hide deep in System areas. I suppose since they were one of the first Mac developers, they think they have special capabilities to put stuff any and every where they want. As well as special dispensation to do things anti-Mac ways. I can't claim to be a power-user, but I have never, ever felt the need to purchase/use any special "uninstaller" app. And I can't think of another app I've ever owned that even needed an "uninstaller" for it. That includes Canvas, php, Apache setups, etc. Frankly, and this is simply my opinion and obviously of little importance to absolutely no one else, the way Adobe does things seems to be extremely un-organized, not-well-thought-out and downright non-Mac. The only thing even marginally close to their confusing instal/uninstall process is Stanford's Folding@home set up. It sometimes requires a few Terminal commands...
    I will perform a search for that CS4 "clearscript" thing, however. Thanks!
    Even the response I got from my Support post assured me that...
    reset/restore the Preferences, click Yes or OK . Now try to use the "Save for Web" keyboard command by pressing "Alt+Shift+Crtl+S". I am positive that after following the above steps your issue will be resolved .
    OK, I get the rest/restore step. but what does the "alt+shift+Crtl+S" have to do with anything? It certainly is not the keyboard short cut for the Mac version of Elements. Perhaps the chap didn't notice the details in my message or the hardware/software information that came with my request for help. I find it strange that somehow the language differences cause the tech's positive belief that his steps would fix the issue that he also presents:
    If the issue is still not resolved then please send us the below mentioned information so that we can provide you with the best possible resolution:-
    1. Have you recently made any changes to your computer?
    2. Are you logged in as administrator ?
    3. Does the issue persist on another system or another user account ?
    4.     Do you get any error message while pressing the combination of "Alt+Shift+Crtl+S" keys on the keyboard? if yes then send us the screen shot of the error message that you are getting
    5.     Please provide the exact system Configuration with details along with the Versions.
    Every single one of those questions was included with the initial message I sent.
    I suspect that the problem is, indeed, in my System, somewhere. I installed Elements on my wife's MBP and it operated normally, even the command+option(alt)+shift+S command. So, when I get some time this week, I'll start up in Safe mode and see if that helps. If not, I'll start removing third-party Pref Panels and apps, a few at a time. If none of that helps, I may try retrieving files from Time Machine. As a last effort, I can always do an Archive and (re)Install of Snow Leopard. I'm just not sure it's worth all the effort to get one measly short cut... The only thing I know for sure is that I will not be seeking any more help from Adobe's "tech support." Why bother, they don't/can't even read the messages their own system sends!

  • How can I copy a webpage that will not let me highlight it, i.e. use the control c key strokes?

    How can I take a picture of a webpage that will not let me use the control C copy command? In other words, on this particular website, I try to highlight a passage that I want to save and put in a document, but the highlighting will not work. I asked them about that, and they simply said they did not have that facility, but I think the issue is protecting their copyrighted material. I know there is some way to take a picture of the page, and then I can use my picture editing software to crop it and enlarge it.

    Are you trying to take a "snapshot" in a PDF?
    If the part of the page or PDF you want to capture is fully visible, you can use the Windows print screen function to capture it. Either use the Print Screen key to capture the entire monitor display, or Alt+Print Screen to capture the active window.
    If you need to do this often, or if you want to save the snapshot straight to disk, or if you need more than fits in a single Windows screen shot, an add-on such as [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/fireshot/ Fireshot] can be handy.

  • Custom Trust and Key Store

    Hello, I've successfully configured the Custom Trust and Key Store on one server (hosting OpenSSO,) but when I follow the exact same directions to configure the Custom Trust and Key Store on another server (hosting Identity Manager with OpenSSO policy agent) WebLogic pre-empts my configuration by loading the DemoTrust.jks and cacerts keystores. I think the issue is introduced because the OpenSSO policy agent requires an Authentication Provider (Agent_Authenticator, com.sun.identity.agents.weblogic.v10.AmWLAuthProvider) that is loaded before the WebLogic domain's config/config.xml file, which contains the Custom Trust and Key Store entities.
    Thanks.

    The root problem is the Certicom SSL does not support SHA256 algorithm, which is required with the trusted certificates of “ttelesecglobalrootclass2ca" and "ttelesecglobalrootclass3ca"
    A fix is included in JDK 1.6.0_13 wherein WLS just ignores these certificates.
    You can get more information on the fix for Oracle Support
    You can delete these certificates yourself using the keytool utility..Thank you. I removed them all, but WebLogic still loads the Demo and JDK keystores and not the custom keystores before loading the security realm.
    Is there a way to specify the KeyStores for the security realm?
    I've provided the following to the JVM but to no avail:
    -Djavax.net.ssl.keyStore=/export/home/weblogic/keystore/keystore.jks -Djavax.net.ssl.keyStoreType=jks -Djavax.net.ssl.keyStore
    Password=***** -Djavax.net.ssl.trustStore=/export/home/weblogic/keystore/keystore.jks -Djavax.net.ssl.trustStoreType=jks -Dj
    avax.net.ssl.trsustStorePassword=*****

  • While logged into Firefox my alpha key stroke shows as a number instead of a letter; Any suggestions?

    When I try to enter a website address into the search bar my letters are appearing as numbers….in other words I cannot type letters only numbers! Please help! This has never happened to me before. This same thing happens when I use Internet Explorer. It only does this when I am logged into the internet. In order to enter this text I had to cut and paste from a word document.

    Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
    If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
    In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in <u>[[Safe mode]]</u>:
    * Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
