Short Glimpse of MSI GTX260 Lightning Black Edition

Just got this MSI GTX260 Lightning Black Edition and I can say MSI did a good job on this one starting from the box until to the unit itself
Let’s get started shall we and open up the box…
There it is the GTX260 Lightning with AirForce Panel and underneath it is some kind of a drawer. Once you pull it out you will find the accessories, driver software cd, manual, DVI & HDMI adapter and cables for connecting the AirForce Panel to your mobo.
As you can see it is using a dual fan heatpipe cooling solution called Twin Frozr and makes the video card cool down very well even at high overclock speeds. On the rear side of the video card there are the HDMI, VGA & DVI Ports.
More on the AirForce Panel, here is an overview on what it can do.
Below are the values you can do with the AirForce

Can you help me overclock this to get a maximum performing? and how can I do that? can you guide me?

After overclock, can I keep that always in 3-5 days without shutdown computer?
Here is default Corelock 832, Shaderlock: 1664, memory clock 2100
Also, when I click the "K" to show MSI Kombustor: I see Core: 416, and GPU Throttling -416Mhz. What is happening? is that graphic card has problem? it doesn't run fully 832mhz.

Playing aan entire level of Crysis or Crysis2 with extreme settings is a very sure way to test. A multiplayer round of BF3 at max settings is also a good test.
If you got the max stable clockrates without overvolting and temps are fine. Go on adding voltage in small steps and agin try the highest max clockrate of any voltage step. That way you'll find the total max clockrate. At some point adding voltage will have no effect anymore and that is the highest clockrate. Remember that voltage unlike just higher clockrates will increase the temps massively.
    Agreed with flobelix
Crysis 2 with ultra setting and set Vsync to Disabled is a very hard test in real life application, I don't use furmark or kombustor. To test stability first I run Vantage and 3DMark2011 then playing Crysis 2 about 2 - 3 hours every day for aweek or 2 weeks and if pass then I call it stable
I use GTX580 Lightning and at stock volt I can do 920/2200 with all little DIP switches turned ON/Enabled/Unlocked excluding Xtreme cooling LN2 DIP switch since I use normal air cooling and not LN2. If I let all DIP switches to their stock/OFF even at 900MHz I can't pass Vantage.
For safe daily OC better stay under 80c for your core temp and under 70c for your VRM & Memory temp  also do not use beyond +200mv for your core voltage (+200mv is the max value)
Note : For 24/7 I use 980/2300 with +112mv/+40mv. VRM and memory temp are under 60c and Core temp is under 80c.

  • Revamp!!! MSI N580GTX Lightning Extreme Edition VC

MSI N580GTX Lightning Extreme Edition is a reconstructed N580GTX Lightning but with 3GB DDR5 memory and redesigned Twin FrozrIII cooler (propeller blade fan’s color changes from blue to white if the card gets hot and the fan rotates backwards for 30 seconds each time the computer starts to remove dusts on the fan). The card still has the enhanced voltage controls and power circuitry where the Lightning series stands out. Compared from a regular 580GTX power phase, the EX has 16+1 (12 for the GPU Core, 3 for the memory and 1 for the PLL/VDDC Power).
At the back area of the card, you will find useful switches for unlocking the Memory, GPU, PLL voltages / Over Current Protection Power Unlocker/ PWM Clock Tuner / and LN2 Bios switch for Cold Bug Fix.
Below are more in-depth specs of the Lightning EX:
    • Pre-overclocked GPU Core is running at 832 MHz
    • 3072MB GDDR5 4200MHz Memory
    • Video Output Functions – 2x Dual-Link DVI, 1x HDMI and 1x Display Port
    • Compose of Military Class 2 Components for longer lifespan and better overclocking ability (Solid Capacitors, Super Ferrite Chokes, Hi-C Caps, Lightning Power PCB Layer, Copper MOS and Proadilizer)
    • Capable of Two-Way or 3-Way SLI Configuration
Black colored underneath plate which serves as heatsink for memory and VRM chips. It also acts as support or brace for long video cards so that it won’t slant down once installed.
Accessories included with the VC Package:
•Two SLI Bridges for multi GPU configuration
•2x 6pin Power to 8pin PCIE Power Connector
    •DVI to VGA Connector
    •Software & Utility DVD
    •Manual and Quick Guide
    •V-Check Points Connector
Lightning EX at stock speed for all the tests.  The only component that I overclocked was the 2600K processor to determine bottlenecks. PhysX was also disabled so that equal comparison can be made against an AMD ATI VC model.
    Test System Configuration:
•Processor: 2600K with Fenrir Heatsink Fan
    •Motherboard: Z68A-GD80
    •Memory: Kingston 2x2GB DDR3 2133MHz
    •Harddrive: Kingston SSD VNow+ 128GB
    •PSU: Antec TPQ-1200
    3dmark06 Result: 24777
    Vantage Result: 25614
    3dmark11 Result: 6535
Next with the 2600K overclocked at 5.1GHz. Video Card performance did increased. This shows that you have to run your 2600k at least at 4.5 – 4.8GHz to cope up with the Lightning EX’s Power.
    3dmark06 2nd Result: 35384
    Vantage 2nd Result: 28741
    3dmark11 2nd Result: 6815
N580GTX Lightning is such a powerful card that even at stock settings, power performance is enough to play all latest games in high resolution with extreme detail settings. Then if the power is still enough for you, you could still use the MSI Afterburner Software to juice out more from the video card or configure it in SLI.

It's only unstable when i'm use the GPU (Games & benchs), not HD videos.
Most games/bench crashes with default clock @ 1.031v. I tried to overvolted & undervolted the GPU, but my tests were not conclusive. The only way i've found to have all games/benchs stable is to downclock the GPU as I explained in my first post.
Maybe i need a more accurate GPU voltage ? Is it important to change Memory & Aux voltage too ?
have you tested with 1050mV for core?

  • MSI N580GTX Lightning Extreme Edition (Black Screen / Reboot)

    Hi everyone !
    Here's my computer specs :
    CPU: Intel I7 870 (2.93 Ghz)
MoBo: Micro ATX from my Dell XPS Studio 8000
    Memory: 6Go DDR 667 Mhz
    PSU: Corsair HX750(w)
    Windows 7 Pro 64 Bits
    My problem :
80% of my games (Crysis 1 & 2, Bulletstorm,...) & benchs (3DMark 11, MSI Kombustor, ...) crashes after few seconds. My graphic card goes off, black screen, and then my computer automatically reboot. I've tried another PSU, same pb, and my Corsair HX750 is new. So I wonder if the problem is from my graphics card or my (dell) motherboard ? But my config has the minimum required by MSI.
    My temporary solution
After few tests with differents drivers, I've try to change the Core Voltage, no result... So I decided to downclock the GPU freqs.
In order to have something stable to 100%, and be able to run all the games and benchs, i've to downclock the GPU like :
    Core Clock : 600 Mhz (Original : 772 Mhz)
    Shader Clock : 1200 Mhz (Original : 1544 Mhz)
    Memory Clock : 1730 Mhz (Original : 2004 Mhz)
    Its a big loss frequency!
Hope a new bios will come out to fix the bug.

  • MSI 7970 Lightning GHz Edition, black screen problem

    Hi all,
I am very dissapointed on the MSI product now. I bought MSI 7970 Lightning BE GHz Edition, when I don't overclock the graphics card and play games I will get black screen or sometime I will get message that "AMD graphics card stopped responding". So I bought a 950W PSU but still problem is there. If I underclocked the card at 600MHz both GPU and memory clock I don't get the problem. But what's the point of having this card paid $500 for nothing. I am so fed up with this card. Please someone help....
    My System Spc :
    Asus P8Z77-V LX motherboard
    16GB RAM
    Core i7 3770
PC Power and cooling MKII 950W PSU
    Thanks.

watch the attitude! you have got a faulty card it happens occasionally as all manufacturers have a 1-3% defective rate not just MSI so do not start with your bashing as its against the rules here!
there are hundreds of individual parts on a board and any one can go bad causing a problem so if you are going to bash anyone bash AMD's GPU's as that is the most likely problem here on the card and MSI do not make those so keep your "I learned a lesson about MSI... it's a piece of junk" to yourself  !

  • [REQUEST]UEFI BIOS GOP MSI R7970 Lightning Boost Edition

    my serial number :

after i submited my vbios with gpuz repository, the message shown that my vbios same like link below:

but if you need real the original bios from my gpuz, here's the link for the normal bios:

and for the original LN2 bios:

sorry if my english very bad

You can use both. I'd prefer flashing in dos without Windows being able to interfere:
Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the previously provided archive (170_180.rar) and put the included file (TV278MH.170 or TV278MH.180) on that stick.
Rename TV278MH.170 / TV278MH.180 to 170.rom / 180.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
Type atiflash -p -f -noaper 0 170.rom (or 180.rom) [ENTER] and let it flash the vbios.

  • MSI GTX 580 Lightning Xtreme Edition Turn Off LED's?

    Hello all MSI users.
Strangely enough, I only heard about MSI Products since last night, and I knew straight up, I needed to get my hands on one of these outstanding products.
The only thing that is holding me back from getting this amazing MSI GTX 580 Lightning Xtreme Edition is the question of if there is posibility in the utilities or on the card itself to turning off the LED's completely?
(then of course turning them back on without damaging the GPU or the LED's.)
The reason why I ask is, I usually leave my PC on over night to do either some long Downloads, a Defrag or a Deep Virus Scan, and as my PC is technically next to my bed, I don't want to be kept up all night with it shining in my face and then having to chuck a T-Shirt over the top of my case.
Please inform me if there is any possibility of this to work without having to go to some 'Xtreme' to turn the LED's off.
    Much Appreciated Guys.

not possible, when VGA is in IDLE there are less amounth of LEDs that's active.
you can place a piece of black tape over leds to "disable" them

  • MSI K9N2G-Neo and Athlon X2 7850 Black Edition - BIOS Options Problem

    Hello, i have this MSI K9N2G-Neo + Athlon X2 7850 BE (REVEEN RCCT 0901SP + Tuniq TX2) + 4 x 2048MB OCZ Platinum 1066MHz, 700 watt real power supply, etc...
The problem is the bios v1.2 and new v1.3 that appears Disabled the CPU Voltage option for this cpu, in gray color or default values and i can´t change it. Now the cpu is running well at 3.2 ghz OC (200x16) some stable but not at all, i think it is a weak OC for a Black Edition CPU. Before i was using the X2 7750 BE and was the same problem with the CPU Voltages Bios´s options too.
Why in the bios isn´t enabled the CPU Voltage option ?
And why this Athlon Kuma don´t appear in the CPU SUPPORT LIST ??
This mother says that support CPUs up to 140watts and AM3... is it sure or it is a lie ?
This bios v1.3 is a few days new, Now i have to wait another 5 moths for a new one ??
    Thanks a lot.

Hi Svet... i did what u said me with numpad and nothing happended cause the cpu option is disabled. I think there is some kind of incompatibility between this mother and Kumas Core CPU... whit the 7750BE was the some issue too.
MSI official web page and 140Watts mothers support shows it.

  • MSI Afterburner Lightning Edition

    Hi,
I've just registered because I was hoping someone could tell me if us MSI 780 Lightning users can expect an updated version?  I'm currently running 3.0.0 beta 15 and now I'm getting a pop-up telling me that it will expire on Dec 14/13.  I do hope there will be a new version as the "non-lightning" seems to only let me turn up the core voltage to +35.  And I can't maintain my already stable overclock with that little voltage boost.
    TIA
    *Edit*
I just read in the "how to use afterburner" section that there's no SE version yet.  So I see that you folks are aware of this.  I'll modify my question then.  Can we expect a new beta SE version before the beta 15 expiry on Dec 14?

We don't know. This is a Users-to-Users Forum and MSI decides whether an SE version will follow or not. So far it doesn't look good as none had been added for beta 16 and beta 17 is also quite old already. Contact MSI about it: >>How to contact MSI.<<. The more reports are coming in the more likely the pressure will make them release one. Unwinder (creator) also pointed everyone asking for a new SE version to MSI. It's solely their decision.

  • MSI R9 270x OC edition 4gb - black screen after windows logo

    Good afternoon,
I am the proud owner of 2 x MSI R9 270x OC edition 4gb cards, One is working a treat, the other is not.
When I use on of them, I get the boot screen (the one with the option to go into the BIOS), then I get the Windows logo, then nothing but a black screen, output from the card is detected by the monitor (green light at the bottom instead of stand by) but nothing else. the other card works perfect on its own.

    MSI NF750-G55 mobo
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition CPU

NZXT M59 ATX Mid tower case
Now to the problem - no POST
I have double checked the CPU seating and installation and its correct, have tried both on board video as well as the GeForce, and no signal to the monitor.  The 4 blue ASP power led's do light up, and the CPU fan spins, but only for a few seconds.  Then it shuts off, then restarts, and keeps cycling like this.  Have tried with no memory installed, same issue.  I have seen several entries on forums for no POST on this mobo.  Can anyone help me here?  Am I looking at a bad mobo or what?  Currently have it out of the case on a non conductive surface.

  • MSI N770 Lightning.. The Lightning Continues...

From MSI N680GTX Lightning to the R7970 Lightning, now comes the new N770 Lightning.
First of all let’s talk about the GTX 770 GPU Chip. It has the same GK104 graphics processor as the GTX 680 have but cranked up. Reference core and boost clocks have been raised to 1046MHz/1085Mhz and the memory speed to 7GT/s.  Aside from this, the GTX 770 GPU Boost has been upgraded to version 2.0, allowing Higher Clocks to punch in more often.
Comparing: GTX 770 vs GTX 680
    Stream Processor:1536 - 1536
    Texture Units:128 - 128
    ROPs   :32 - 32
    Core Clock:1046Mhz - 1006MHz
    Boost Clock:1085Mhz - 1058MHz
    Memory Clock: 7Ghz GDDR5 - 6Ghz GDDR5
Memory Bus Width: 256 Bit - 256 Bit
    TDP:230W - 195W
    Transistor Count: 3.5B - 3.5B
    Mftg. Process: 28nm - 28nm
Now with the N770 Lightning, the video card has been factory overclocked to a core speed of 1150 Mhz (ref. 1046) and a boost clock of 1202 Mhz (ref. 1085) while the memory clock has been kept on a standard speed of 7010 Mhz. The GTX 770 Lightning will also use MSI’s GPU Reactor providing higher power levels and cleaner signals for the GPU. Other components that MSI have integrated into the card are the Military Class IV, voltage check points and 8+8pin PCIE Power connector thus making the video card break limits in the world of overclocking.

With the Lightning’s TwinFrozr 4 cooler, it promises to bring the video card temps below 60c and at the same time being quiet. It also boast the 2x 10cm Propeller Blade Fan technology which provides higher air volume to the card for faster heat dissipation. Dust Removal technology is also been implemented now in the Lightning series of video cards as it automatically cleans your video card.
Two SLI bridges on top of the N770 Lightning and to clarify things up, it is only intended for a Tri-SLI configuration.
Below are three SuperPipes with one being on top which also helps cooling the GPU chip. You can also see at the bottom part of the video card the Golden SSC Military Class IV Components.. These components are no ordinary; they can withstand extreme conditions, run with stability and power efficiency and provides longer lifespan to the video card.
Checking the back side of the card, back-plate is installed thus making it cooler and to avoid bending the video card. The blue circle thing you see there is the GPU-Reactor – an additional PCB connected at the back of the video card which also lights up when powered up.

    Hello,
About PSU: 450W is not enough for either of them. For 760 or above it is recommended to have 600W (as the minimum) power supply.
Both cards has similar cooling, but I would prefer lightning edition (hey, it's 770 not 760 which is little bit lower in performance). However if you also look for the design to fit your case, then that's up to you. Obviously if the card will run hot, most likely you will have to reapply thermal paste (very common in case of GPUs).

  • Problems with msi r6970 lightning

Hey guys I am having big issues with my 6970 lightning. Ok first I got this card to replace a second sapphire 6970 that I was running in xfire with another sapphire 6970. I since gave one of the sapphires to a relative. When I first got the lightning all went smooth benched it in a single card config then added my other sapphire 6970. No issues. Out of nowhere things rapidly went downhill. I first received a crash in grfs as I loaded shattered mountain. Froze with a sound loop then the screen turned black with a continued sound loop that eventually stopped. Reset the machine figuring it was the OC. On the lighting I had it set as 985/1400 fan 80% voltage @ 1.300 vlts. Prior to the crash I used a combo of heaven 3.0, kombustor and 3dmark 11 all passed numerous loops without issues. Again thinking it was the oc I down clocked to stock then fired up grfs multiplayer which crashed n froze on the main menu. I then  ran heaven and after 10 min a solid black screen that eventually recovered throwing a display driver has stopped responding but has recovered. Now I knew something was up.
I then ran kombustor same issues black screens sometimes a 8bit Nintendo looking screen when u need to blow in the cartridge. After countless hours of stress testing my CPU with prime, memtest, and Intel burn, I ruled out my other hardware as being the cause. I ran 2 hours of prime, Intel burn passed the maximum stress test, memtest passed until about 500% on each iteration (7 to be exact) windows version. This both with my OC and at stock. Here's for the finale I have a second machine (ill include both machines at the bottom of this post) I installed the lightening in the second rig not one single issue no black screen, no 8bit Nintendo crashes nada. Again I've tried every fix known to no prevail. Reinstalled drivers 12.10 rolled back to 12.8 used driver fusion to clear out the old remnants, swapping cards and systems. The lightning ran flawless in the old rig for hours. Now the sapphire card runs all the gpu stress tests I've tried flawlessly in the main rig at stock and OC. so I assumed the lightning was dying. But I tried the lightning in my second AMD pc (with a MSI mobo coincidentally) and it ran heaven,  kombuster, and games without a single crash.
The only option I didn't try was taking the PSU out of the main pc and using it in the older pc to rule out the psu. But that still don't explain why the sapphire card works perfectly in the main rig and not the lightning. The second fix I didn't try was updating the mobo bios I'm using the f3 gigabyte has up to the f6 but I never had issues b4 and my sapphire 6970 and when I had two in xfire, ran perfect in the main pc with stock and oc settings, with the current PSU and bios. Food for though, gpu temps  sapphire 45c to 50c idle 75c to 80c load. Lightning 41c idle 70c to 74c load. Right where they need to be. Another thing to add I originally had a gigabyte Odin 1200 PSU that got ... Well let's say replaced (garbage of a PSU) the HX750 meets AMD requirements for xfire 6970s this almost rules out everything except BIOS or worst case the lightning just ain't compatible with the gigabyte mobo. Any ideas how to get this card to work after all the testing I know its not defective. Sry for the long post.

I also use cpuid hwmonitor to check temps n volts 12 vlt rail is at 12.05 during load. The gpu load temps on the lightning nvr exceed 72c at stock and 76c with the oc. Should I get a new mobo? Compatibility issue? I was looking at a asrock 990fx extreme 3 as this would allow me to upgrade my CPU later if I choose. I am on my current main pc bc bulldozer didn't grab me. Some benches r less than the x6s, my two 6970s perform btr than a single 7970 for my needs and the only increase I would see is if I got two 7970s that's way to much coin n would be bottlenecked by my current CPU I'm sure. Any ideas? I'm at a loss
