Shortest Downtime Option to Migrate VMs between SRs

Greetings,
Environment: Oracle VM 3.1.1 with Patch set 365. EMC SAN, each OVM server has 2 HBAs.
Our storage team had to redesign the storage for our Oracle VM environment to overcome design differences that resulted in poor I/O performance for all of our virtual machines. Therefor we must migrate all our VMs (412) from four LUNs (storage repositories) to four different LUNs. All of the LUNs (4 old LUNs and four new LUNs) are presented to all of the Oracle VM Servers.
We are looking for a way to migrate all our VMs (prod Oracle DBs, RAC, EBS, OBIEE, etc...) with the shortest down time. We have a little over 6T of virtual machine data that must be moved from the old LUNs to the new LUNs.
We welcome your suggestions and comments!
Thank you,

A lot depends on the VMs in question. Doing it at the OVM layer is not (as far as I know) an option.
General tactic (linux) that I would recommend would be to present the old and new "disks" to the system (can't remember if that needs a reboot of the VM, probably - everything else seems to with OVM3). Then while the system is running, use rsync to copy the system from the old "disks" to the new ones. Then, during a second agreed outage, drop the machines to single user and re-run the rsync (since it will then just do changed files). Then shutdown, drop the old LUNs, and boot.
This should only require 2 very short outages (at the OS layer) - effectively about the time for a reboot + 5 minutes.
If you're using LVM, this can be tidied up a little - as it could be if you're using ASM for the DBs... So if you can provide details of your configuration, I'm sure other people can add other suggestions too :)

  • Migrating VMs between different Server Platforms

    Hello!
I have a farm of Dell 2850s that I'm using for a pool of NFS based OVM servers. I tried adding some non Dell 2850s to the pool (Intel Developer series by SuperMicro), and they run OVM OK and the OVM manger can see them and all, but I can't migrate VMs from the 2850s to the SuperMicros. In addition, because the Dell2850s have more memory than the SuperMicros, I can't get a VM to launch from the SuperMicros.
I'm thinking that the reason for this is the different physical server platforms. Back when I used ESX, before version 2.5, you couldn't do Vmotion (the logistic equivalent of an OVM Live Migration) on anything other than identical server platforms.
Does anyone else have a similar problem? Do I have the root cause of the problem correct, or is it something else?
    Thanks,

  • Migrate VM between clusters added to the same SCVMM

Is it possible to migrate VMs between two Cluster ( from 2012 SP1 cluster to 2012R2 cluster) that added
    to the same SCVMM?

Yes this is possible. Make sure that the networks selected for live migration is available on both clusters, and that the name of the logical switch in both environments are identical.
The key here is that VMM must be managing both environments.

  • Migrate Roles failes when migrating VMs with legacy network adapters (2008R2 - 2012)

I'm working on a upgrade of Hyper-V 2008R2 cluster to Hyper-V 2012 cluster. I am using the "migrate roles" feature of failover clustering to migrate the CSV's and VM's. The wizard ask to which switch the VMs need to be connected on the target cluster.
All VMs with network adapters can be started in the new cluster without any issues. If you look at the XML file of the migrated VMs with normal network adapters, a new XML has been generated in the proper 2012 format. However, all VM's with a legacy
network adapter fail to start. Also there is no migrated XML file in the VM directory. It is impossible to check or adjust the settings of the migrated VMs with legacy network adapters using the failover clustering console.
I have reproduced the issue in my lab several times, and it seems like a bug.
There are several workarounds, but I am looking for a real solution.

    Hi,
We recommend that you use the legacy network adapter only to perform a network-based installation or when the guest operating system does not support the network adapter.
If the virtual machine continues to use the legacy network adapter it will not be able to leverage many of the features available in the Hyper-V virtual switch. You may want
to replace the legacy network adapter after the operating system is installed.

  • HT2518 Two options to migrate my items

Hello, I am a windows user and I just bought a new mac mini and I have found two options to migrate my items.
One option is using the migration software on my new mac mini and
another is to use an Apple software downloaded to my PC.
    Which is the best option?
    Thank You

One option is using the migration software on my new mac mini and another is to use an Apple software downloaded to my PC.
This is really two parts of a single option - you need the Apple created software on your PC for the migration to work. You have to download from this link to your pc: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1557
One caveat, a wireless migration can take many hours.

  • Migrate servers between domains

    Hello
We need to plan an AD domain migration to an already existing domain - i.e. not a new domain - for dozens of servers hosting different roles and am looking for some general pointers for what we should be aware of.
We cannot use ADMT (for internal political reasons) and cannot use external tools, e.g. Quest (for cost reasons)
The roles on the servers include:
Domain controllers, IIS, SQL, CRM, VMWare Virtual Center - plus other bespoke applications.
I know there will NOT be a "one size fits all" process for every server (or even every application) but was hoping someone could provide general information for the apps mentioned above.
e.g. should we not even consider moving the server(s) between domains but rather build a new server and reinstall the application ?  If rebuilding a server is NOT an option for any reason, CAN we move the application server(s) to the
    other domain without issues ?
I realise this is a very complex set of tasks but, as I said, just looking for some general information to give us a starting point.
    Thanks

    >>>CAN we move the application server(s) to the other domain without issues ?
It depends on your authentication and permission model.  Where are the users and groups?  ACL on these servers from a different domain?
    Please provide more information.

  • Migrate Templates between EE Installs

The information available about moving / migrating templates from dev to prod or between multiple BIP installs seems to always involve eBS as part of the equation. Maybe I'm just not understanding the info shared by others. I am seeking a way to move templates / reports from one EE install to another. Is there a way to accomplish this without manually entering queries, lists of values, etc.? For example, I have created a report on my office pc using EE. Now, I want to put that on a server so that others can access it. I gotta believe this is easily doable.
    Thanks.

    Couple of ways.
    1. This works well for single reports. Click on the Report icon next to the Report Name. This will bring up an option in the left hand side of the page to download the report. Do this. This will download a zip file that has everything you need. Now, on the new server, you will see an option to upload a report. Just upload that zip file. Everything unpacks appropriately. Make sure you have the data source defined in the second server before you do this. (This works for 10.1.3.2. I can't remember if it was there in 5.6.2).
    2. This works well for bulk movement. Go out to the file system and find the folder that has the same name as your report. Each report gets its own folder. In this folder is the .xdo file and all your templates. Just copy that entire folder to a similar location on the new server. Again, make sure your data sources exist in the second server.

  • Migrate Collections between Win and Mac versions of Bridge

Would like to know if it is possible to migrate Bridge collections between Windows and Mac machines.
On the two respective main machines one or two of the the root folder names differ, but the subfolder structures are the same.
In addition, both machines can access other resources from a common USB drive, so that any collections of images from that drive will have identical paths.
Would like to avoid repeating the collection-building process if it is possible to migrate the data from one machine to another.
Please let me know what is possible.

You could just copy the photos from one machine
to another and then let the cache build.  You have to make sure you export the XMP files along with the photo or you will lose edits and some info.
If you can move them with Bridge this is the best bet to keep all the pieces together.  If you are using just central cache you will have to explore the option of "export xmp files"in one of the dropdown boxes.  Not at a computer with Bridge on it..

  • Migrating configurations between two servers

I would like to know if it is possible to migrate the configuration between two server (TEST to PROD). We are now implementing a new company (which includes OPM, INV,FA, CE, AP, PO, OM, GL) and if all works, we'll want to migrate the configuration in order to not do everything again.
We pass to much time configuring in TEST server and later reconfiguring in PROD server
If you have an script generator or another tools, please tell us.
    Thanks & Regards,

FNDLOAD: can be used for Migration to synchronize the data across databases instance (Dev/Prod).
Using FNDLOAD can download data from an application entity into an editable text file, which can be uploaded to another database. The Conversion between database format and text file format is specified by a configuration file.
    What can be Done?
·It can be done following list
    · Concurrent Programs, Executables
    · Request Groups, Request Sets

  • Lync 2013 multitenant hosting pack and lync 2010 on-prem - coexistence options, alternative migration scenarios

In post http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/lync/en-US/8a22eed7-cc63-4f9e-b422-3c5a57fb32b0/lync-2013-multitenant-pack-and-lync-2010?forum=lyncdeploy , which was already answered, the answer is no, you cannot migrate from 2010 on-prem. to lync 2013
    hosted pack.
Trying to get my head around #1 -why, and #2 -what other alternatives are available.
Lisa answered that there can only be 1 CMS per forest.  Is it one CMS per forest, or
one CMS per front end pool in a forest? Meaning you can have different CMS pools. If that were true, we could migrate users to a different front end pool in a coexistence scenario between 2010 on-prem to 2013 hosted pack.
    Has anyone done this?
This is tough. I guess a cutover then from 2010 to 2013 multitenant hosted pack would be what?
    1. Uninstall 2010, decommission users, decom environment/servers.
    2. Fresh install in same AD environment of 2013 hosted pack.
That's tough for our users to make such a transition and have potentially days of downtime.
Is there no other way to do this?
    Josh

It is one CMS per forest.
There is no official guide to move from Microsoft Lync Server to Microsoft Lync Server Multitenant Hosting Pack.

  • Problems with migration assistant between macbook running leopard and macbook pro on lion

    Hi,
I've just got a macbook pro running lion and am having difficulties transferring through a network from a macbook (running latest version of leopard) onto it.
It just keeps telling me to update migration assistant on my macbook, which I've tried doing but it already says it's completely up to date.
I've tried checking that filesharing/firewall etc. is enabled on both.
Does this mean I have to get a firewire cable? What do I need to do?
    Thank you for any suggestions.

Turn off your Leopard machine, leave your Lion machine on. Connect your firewire cable between both computers. Start up the Leopard computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears. The hard disk of the Leopard computer should become available to the Lion computer and will likely appear on desktop.

  • Migrate repositories between database

    Hi,
We have 2 BOBJ system (1=BOBJ Enterprise) and (2=IPS/IS/DS) on Windows with SQL Server. Planning to migrate those systems to Linux with Sybase database.
Could you please help me how to migrate data across databases.
    1) BOBJ Enterprise
I will use Promotion management or BIAR file option to export/import data. I dont have any issues with this point.
    2) IPS Data ?
Does IPS have any data in it?
How to export IPS Data if data exists?
    3) Data Services Repository migration
I have 10 repositories in source system (win+sql). How to move those 10 repositories to target system (Linux+sybase).

    Hi Kumar,
Regarding your query below is the detail:
    1) BOBJ Enterprise
I will use Promotion management or BIAR file option to export/import data. I dont have any issues with this point.
    Solution: You have to options:
Option I: Use database latest backup and deployed in new schema/database + Offline FRS backup.
Option II: Create new blank schema/database + Offline FRS backup + Promotion Manager or BIAR File
    2) IPS Data ?
Does IPS have any data in it?
Solution: Yes IPS is mini BOE applictaion so please take the backup of CMS & AUDIT schema/database and deploy in new environment.
If you are using Information steward then fileRepository Offline backup is mandatory.
How to export IPS Data if data exists?
Solution: Use schema/database import export method, Please contact DBA
    3) Data Services Repository migration
I have 10 repositories in source system (win+sql). How to move those 10 repositories to target system (Linux+sybase).
Is it possible to move 10 repostories data of source into one repository on target system.
Solution: Use schema/database import export method, Please contact DBA.
Then use SAP Business Objects Repository manager with below steps:
    (a) Create blank schema/database in Sybase
    (b) Using Import/Export move the content from Old environment to New Environment.
    3)  What kind of data will be there in Information steward?
How to export/import data of IS (win+sql) to (linux+sybase)
Solution: Use schema/database import export method, Please contact DBA
Copy lastest Filerepository backup from Old environment to New Environment.
All the enhancement related to address directory (Infiormation steward) data is stored in Filestore, Please refer below KBA & article for more detail
