Migrating VMs between different Server Platforms

Hello!
I have a farm of Dell 2850s that I'm using for a pool of NFS based OVM servers. I tried adding some non Dell 2850s to the pool (Intel Developer series by SuperMicro), and they run OVM OK and the OVM manger can see them and all, but I can't migrate VMs from the 2850s to the SuperMicros. In addition, because the Dell2850s have more memory than the SuperMicros, I can't get a VM to launch from the SuperMicros.
I'm thinking that the reason for this is the different physical server platforms. Back when I used ESX, before version 2.5, you couldn't do Vmotion (the logistic equivalent of an OVM Live Migration) on anything other than identical server platforms.
Does anyone else have a similar problem? Do I have the root cause of the problem correct, or is it something else?
Thanks,
-STS

You want to post the idocs in the same client !! Why ?

  • Shortest Downtime Option to Migrate VMs between SRs

    Greetings,
Environment: Oracle VM 3.1.1 with Patch set 365. EMC SAN, each OVM server has 2 HBAs.
Our storage team had to redesign the storage for our Oracle VM environment to overcome design differences that resulted in poor I/O performance for all of our virtual machines. Therefor we must migrate all our VMs (412) from four LUNs (storage repositories) to four different LUNs. All of the LUNs (4 old LUNs and four new LUNs) are presented to all of the Oracle VM Servers.
We are looking for a way to migrate all our VMs (prod Oracle DBs, RAC, EBS, OBIEE, etc...) with the shortest down time. We have a little over 6T of virtual machine data that must be moved from the old LUNs to the new LUNs.
We welcome your suggestions and comments!
    Thank you,

A lot depends on the VMs in question. Doing it at the OVM layer is not (as far as I know) an option.
General tactic (linux) that I would recommend would be to present the old and new "disks" to the system (can't remember if that needs a reboot of the VM, probably - everything else seems to with OVM3). Then while the system is running, use rsync to copy the system from the old "disks" to the new ones. Then, during a second agreed outage, drop the machines to single user and re-run the rsync (since it will then just do changed files). Then shutdown, drop the old LUNs, and boot.
This should only require 2 very short outages (at the OS layer) - effectively about the time for a reboot + 5 minutes.
If you're using LVM, this can be tidied up a little - as it could be if you're using ASM for the DBs... So if you can provide details of your configuration, I'm sure other people can add other suggestions too :)

  • Migrate VM between clusters added to the same SCVMM

Is it possible to migrate VMs between two Cluster ( from 2012 SP1 cluster to 2012R2 cluster) that added
    to the same SCVMM?

Yes this is possible. Make sure that the networks selected for live migration is available on both clusters, and that the name of the logical switch in both environments are identical.
The key here is that VMM must be managing both environments.

  • Data guard between different platforms?

I'm pretty sure the answer is no but just want to be sure, so my question is...Can you have a data guard physical standby server that is running on a different platform than the primary?
For instance, We have just been informed by our sakes rep that Oracle is dropping the Itanium platform because future releases of red hat will no longer be supporting the Itanium platform and that Oracle is following the red hat model...
Can we setup dataguard to migrate off of current hardware platform to a new X86_64 platform?

Thanks. This would follow the same rule that both, primary and standby must run on the same platform and o/s. So I guess, the answer would be that you would need to move both of your servers. But, just to be assure, you should raise the same question on the dedicated forum of dataguard where product manager of DG , Larry Carpenter hangs around as well. That would be the place where I would ask my data guard doubts.

  • Migration the db portion only to different server

    Gurus,
Current configuration of EBiz application is
AIX 5.3 - Apps (11.5.10) + db (10.2.0.4) on the same server. The plan is to delink the database from the existing AIX server and migrate to different hardware so that database can be on a different server and apps can continue on the same server.
One of my friends suggested me to move the concurrent manager portion also to the db server (New server).
    Does anyone buy that idea?

  • Migrating SSO to a different server

    Hi,
We are using Oracle SSO on Oracle HTTP server.
AS requirement, we need to be moving to a different server with different IP, but out domain names will remain same.
Do we need to re-request the SSO credentials again? Or simply performing the steps (cleartext, and apobfuscate) again on the new server with the old details will get this going?
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, using dsmig is a supported method of migrating schema. However, dsmig requires local disk access to both the old instance and the new instace. Often times during migrations the new DS instance is on a new or different piece of hardware. In those cases to use dsmig you would have to either tar up the old instance, copy and un-tar it somewhere on the new system or, I suppose, you could set up a temporary NFS mount to the old system. I find either of these to be more work than is necessary. I almost always resort to a manual migration process as I know I am in control of everything being migrated. Sun does support the manual method as well and it is documented at:
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-2762/dsmanual?a=view
The section specifically on manually migrating schema is at:

  • Redo logs switches too frequent after migrating the db to different server

    Dear Experts,
A couple of days back, we migrated our database (belonging to EBusiness Suite) to a different server, to get good performance benefit. The database is 10.2.0.4 and it was migrated from AIX 5.3 to Linux x86 64.
Users are happy with the performance, but I am getting below errors in the alert logs
    a) Thread 1 cannot allocate new log, sequence 498
    b) Private strand flush not complete
    c) ORACLE Instance PROD - Can not allocate log, archival requiredOracle support is saying the issue is coming because of too frequent log switches. I am wondering how the log switches has become frequent in the new server. In the old server it was about 10 mins for every switch, now it is as frequent as 1 minute?
Any idea, what could be the reason behind this? Do you agree this issue is coming because frequent log switches?

Would agree with Christoffer and migrate using ADFS but before you can do this you will need to set up a trust between the two domains.  Once this has been accomplished then you can run ADMT.

  • How to share memory between different VMs?

    Hi, dear all!
I don't know if it is possible to share memory between different VMs. I know its easy for threads. Now my problem is that I want to start serveral applications which share only one copy of data, I don't know what's the right way to do that.
    Thanx

They are some volume data for visualization. I want to
serveral rendering servers on a single machine, the
data size can be up to 1024*1024*1024 ( or even larger
I don't know if I HAVE TO use threads in order to
share the data, however, threads are not preemptive as
processes I think, is that true?
Not really sure what that has to do with it.
I believe the VMs for most common OSes use preemptive thread scheduling. I know windows does and I am rather certain that solaris/linux also do that.
A number of suggestions were made above for your problem. Memory mapped files allow multiple VMs if memory mapped files work for your VM/OS. Or you can use a single VM.
Given that your dataset is 1 gig or larger you might want to keep in mind the limitations of modern OSes. Windows for example will not normally allow any application to have a process space larger than 2 gigs. And on all OSes the VM heap limitations for 32-bit VMs are below 2 gigs by several hundred mega-bytes.

    Hello
You need to perform an OSDB migration.
This will involve exporting your SAP system into a DB neutral format and then reloading this into an SQL 2005 SAP system.
    Please review http://service.sap.com/osdbmigration
I recommend you review the homo/heterogeneous system copy guide for your SAP release.

  • Trigger Between two DB located on different Server

    Hi Everyone,
According to my project requirement I need your help to create a trigger on one table employee of my 10g DB located on server 172.128.1.62, which will trigger for any Delete, Update and Insert and update the same on its duplicate table located on different server(172.128.1.201).
    Eg:
Table EMPLOYEE (on 172.128.1.62) refer as A
    SrNo        E_Name      Salary
    1             Fizzz           5000
    2             Albert        8000
    3             John          6500
Table EMPLOYEE (on 172.128.1.201) refer as B
    SrNo        E_Name      Salary
    1             Fizzz           5000
    2             Albert        8000
    3             John          6500
Now If I update table A and change salary of John from 6500 to 7000 and delete Employee Fizzz from table A
Then I need a trigger to get fired and update the same in table B
After table A updated table B should look like:
Table EMPLOYEE (on 172.128.1.201) refer as B
    SrNo        E_Name      Salary
    1             Albert        8000
    2             John          7000
I already scratch my head but did not find anything, Now this is became very critical requirement, Please somebody help me to achieve this task.
    Thank you very much,
Fizzz. Edited by: Fizzz on Sep 22, 2011 4:36 PM

I would not consider doing it myself with triggers. It will practically be guaranteed that at some point in time your data in B will by out of sync with A.
There are several methods of doing replication. At least two technologies can be chosen from:
    [url http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10706/toc.htm]Advanced replication
    [url http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10705/toc.htm]Streams replication
Both can be setup in various ways ranging from simple two-database one-way replication that refreshes periodically (for example a fast refreshable materialized view) to multi-database multi-way replication of complete schemas.
We have had success with relatively simple materialized views for one-way replication of tables from one database to another. Read chapter 3 in the Advanced replication guide ;-)
