Should "boot cdrom -s" result in a machine on the network?

Perhaps I've just not looked in the right place, but I don't understand something that happened last night and thought I would try my first posting to this forum.
We run Solaris 8 here still so I am not familiar with Solaris 9. I booted a SB2K from a Solaris 9 CD with the OBP command "boot cdrom -s" in order to do some clean ufsdumps of the local hard drive to VXA2 tape. The ufsdump was running fine when I noticed some warnings about an IP conflict. I found this strange for several reasons. First, I didn't expect networking to even be running when booted in single user mode. Second, the IP address it was reporting the conflict with was not the usual IP address for this box. When the ufsdump finished, the hostname command and ifconfig showed this box to have the hostname and IP of another running workstation on the network. Checking df etc. showed the box to indeed be booted from the cdrom with no local hard drives mounted (as intended).
So what happened here? Why was networking up and running automatically just by booting in to single user mode from the cdrom? Is this normal for Solaris 9? Does it do DHCP or something automatically and without warning? And where the heck did it get the hostname and IP of another workstation from?
Thanks

We run Solaris 8 here still so I am not familiar with
Solaris 9The two are very similar.
I booted a SB2K from a Solaris 9 CD with
the OBP command "boot cdrom -s" in order to do some
clean ufsdumps of the local hard drive to VXA2 tape.
The ufsdump was running fine when I noticed some
warnings about an IP conflict. I found this strange
for several reasons. First, I didn't expect
networking to even be running when booted in single
user mode.Physical interfaces are normally started in single-user mode, but the default router is not normally brought up. However, on a cdrom boot, you won't have any static configuration.
Has this machine ever been jumpstarted?
Second, the IP address it was reporting
the conflict with was not the usual IP address for
this box.The cdrom boot isn't using the on-disk files for configuration, so the address it's using isn't necessarily connected to the one it normally uses.
When the ufsdump finished, the hostname
command and ifconfig showed this box to have the
hostname and IP of another running workstation on
the network. Checking df etc. showed the box to
indeed be booted from the cdrom with no local hard
drives mounted (as intended). My first thought is that this machine is configured on a jumpstart server somewhere with this other machine's IP address, and that startup processes are querying it.
So what happened here? Why was networking up and
running automatically just by booting in to single
user mode from the cdrom? Is this normal for Solaris
9?If there is a network configuration, then it is normal for the physical interfaces to be be started in single-user. On cdrom, there is no configuration, so something else is also happening.
You can see some of the network stuff is started in single-user as /etc/rcS.d/S30network.sh.
Does it do DHCP or something automatically and
without warning? No, but it probably does RARP/bootparams in some circumstances.
And where the heck did it get the
hostname and IP of another workstation from? Hopefully it is from a jumpstart server that you can track down.
You could also try booting it with the network unplugged. When the boot completes, you should find the interfaces are still down.

  • Time Machine over the Network: Terribly Slow

    Hello,
I've been using Time Machine for over 3 years now with no issues over the network; the destination being a 2TB external Seagate connected to another iMac connected through gigabit ethernet. Everything has been working flawlessly: Every hour Time Machine would MOUNT the sparseimage it created on the disk, BACKUP the data and UNMOUNT the disk image when finished.
Until I upgraded to Lion. The above process is still working per se, however it is PAINFULLY slow! A 50MB backup can take up to AN HOUR! Searching around on the net, advised that there could be an issue with Spotlight as well, however this is not the case for me, since Spotlight finished a new index in under 30 mins. Followed every tutorial I could find on the issue, to no avail..
I then upgraded to Mountain Lion with the hope that the issue will clear itself. Cleared my old backups, resetted Time Machine by erasing its .plist file, restarted my iMac just to make sure and connected Time Machine to the network share anew, creating a "sharing only" account on the host iMac, i.e. the one that has the external HD connected through USB. Still no luck.
I painfully realize that I still have the same issue. While backing up, network traffic is under 100KB, and activity monitor does not show any backupd or mds or any similar processes taking anything over 3% of CPU time.
    What could be wrong?

    Hello again,
Tries on the other iMac (also running 10.8.2) and things are exactly the same: Image creation takes almost half an hour, and copying crawls at under 1MB/min. While time machine image is mounted and Time Machine is "backing up", accessing ANY disk on the host Mac is VERY slow. Seems like something hogs up appleshare when Time Machine is in use. Mind you, there is insignificant network traffic as seen by Activity Monitor, as well as insignificant CPU usage while backing up.
Stopping backup and using tmutil to set the Time Machine destination to the mounted image as mounted by Finder, solves the issue again, revving up Time Machine throughput to over 20MB/sec! There is also no issues acessing the other Mac as well, under this scenario.
Up to this point, the only way I have managed to use Time Machine over a networked external HD is through the NAS server. Both configurations where I am using a Mac running 10.8.2 as a server of the external disk have failed with very low throughput while backing up. Something must be wrong in 10.8.2's afp when Time Machine is mounting the image by itself.
I may need to remind you that I have been successfully backing up to the external HD for 4 years now; something broke a few months after the client iMac was upgraded to Lion and at the time when the host iMac was upgraded to Mountain Lion. Will try to locate a Mac running some later OS X version to do some more testing.
Also reminding that I have used two distinctive iMacs and two external HD drives for my tests so far. The client iMac has remained the same, however 10.8.2 has been reinstalled on it a couple of times. Have also used an afp-enabled NAS server which worked fine with Time Machine.

  • Time Machine over the Network

    Hello,
I've been using Time Machine for over 3 years now with no issues over the network; the destination being a 1TB-limited sparseimage setup as instructed by this tutorial. The image resides on an external HD connected on a network-connected iMac. Everything has been working flawlessly: Every hour Time Machine would MOUNT the disk image on its own, BACKUP the data and UNMOUNT the disk image as well.
While testing, I tried to copy a 200MB file ONTO the Time Machine disk (mounted from the sparseimage automatically by Time Machine) and it took OVER 3 hours! I then stopped Time Machine (which tool half an hour) and mounted the image via Finder and the same file copied in 4 secs!
I really don't get it; I bet both times the mounted Volume runes under the same protocol, AFP via TCP, why is it behaving so strangely when auto-mounted by Time Machine?
Next, I read about tmutil has been added to Lion upwards and that setting a mounted disk image as destination is now supported by TM. So I went on and mounted the image via the Finder, set the mounted Volume as the time machine destination via tmutil and gave the backup a try. The process went away really fast, was extremely pleased!
However: As soon as the backup finishes, the Volume EJECTS and TM reports that the next backup is to be made "when the backup disk is connected"! It will NOT mount the image by its own, neither to backup or to access old backups. But wait, there's more: Be selecting "Backup now" via the TM menu item, the Volume MOUNTS INSTANTLY and the backup takes place, with no issues whatsoever!
What I need is a TM that backs up quickly over the network and mounts its disk automatically.
Well, I guess if you had the time and will to read the above text, you may try to help, if you have a clue, that is...
    Thank you.

I am afraid that the information on the excellent tutorial (which I have already checked many times) don't help me much... I have two main questions:
    1. Why is the TM-mounted volume so slow? Mounting the same volume through the Finder works blazing fast! Is there something special in the way TM mounts its volumes?
    2. Is there a proper way to force TM to start an automatic backup, when the backup volume is not mounted? It used to work when the destination was the network volume, but does not work when the destination is set to the sparsebundle volume which inside the network volume.

  • New Router- Internet OK, but cannot see other machines on the network with Windows Explorer

Everything was fine (but slow) with my old Linksys BRFW1154.  Ordered and got a new WRT350N.  Multiple computers (using Windows XP) on network can all access the internet and the network printer, but when I try to use Windows Explorer to see files etc on other computers (in My Network Places) from any computer, I no longer can see the other computers. I get the error: "Workgroup is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this ........etc....".
Any ideas out there as to how I get my network working again?

check whether all the computers can ping each other fine...also, the computers should be in the same workgroup

  • How to Run an application on multiple machines on the network

    Hello,
I am making an application seeking information from the serial number and signed licenseregistered in the labview.
But wanted to make this application to seek information on computers that are on the network without having to install the same application on each machine.
Can anyone help me? I'm not getting.
    Thank you.

Could you be more descriptive about the scope of the application?
Have you tried/considered setting up the application as a "Remote Panel" on a machine, and then have the other machines that need access to the application connect via their web browser?

  • Windows machines on the network

I just installed Leopard... so still new to the environment.
I think it's cool to have other computers on my network easily accessible from the sidebar, but my sole Windows XP Professional Dell machine is not. It's there in the sidebar, but I get a Failure Connecting message when I click on it. I previously was able to connect to the internal C-drive of that computer, plus an external F-Drive.
What do I need to re-configure to fix that?
    ...Charles

I am also still having problems writing files from my Mac (running Leopard 10.5.1) to mounted Windows drives -- both folders on the Windows 2003 server (SMB/NTFS) at work and the Windows XP virtual machine (NTFS/Parallels) on my Mac.
    1. Any type of account: reading and copying from Windows to Mac works OK.
    2. Guest account on mounted Windows shared folder: writing (dragging and dropping) from Mac to Windows works OK (this was problematic in 10.5.0, but is fixed in 10.5.1).
    3. Authenticated user on mounted Windows folder: writing (dragging and dropping) from Mac to Windows does *NOT work*. Leopard stalls when copying files (> 4kb) to Windows, sometimes producing a -36 error code (stating that the Finder cannot complete the operation because some data cannot be read or written). I cannot even connect to my virtual machine as an authenticated user. I am always logged in as a guest even after choosing the "Connect as" option.
    4. Dragging and dropping files directly into a running Parallels virtual machine (thus not via the mounted drive) works OK.
Interesting enough, I had not problems copying data from my Mac running Leopard to our old Windows 2000 server, which was replaced by the 2003 machine more than a week ago. So, this seems to be a Leopard - XP/2003 issue.
When having to back up data from my local Mac to the Windows 2003 server, I just drop files into Parallels and use the virtual machine for Windows networking.
    Apple, please fix this.

  • Is there a way to have everything the same on every machine on the network?

Is it possible to have the same icons, desktop, files, etc. appear on every machine a person logs in to on an open directory network?

Sure - it's called network home directories.
The user's home directory is stored on a central file server, typically running AFP. You change the user's Open Directory record to indicate their home directory is on this server, rather than the local /Users/<username> directory and you're set (other than synchronizing all the user's data from multiple machines, if you need to).
This is part of the standard user administration setup.

  • My iMac does not see the windows machines on the network (and vice versa)

I'm runningOS X 10.8.2 on my iMac which attachs to the office network using Wi-Fi.
It's on the right network (it's not attaching to the Wi-Fi router in the bulding next door) - I've checked the SSID and it's also being issued the right IP address by the router.
I can ping the Windows machines and they can ping my iMac.  The issue is that I simply CANNOT share files back and forth.
At seemingly randoms times, I  can, and I have File Sharing enabled in Sharing (remember, and RANDOM times I  CAN see the Windows machines and they can see the iMac...BUT, it's random).
    Thoughts?

zahidfh, Welcome to the discussion area!
More than likely your area has very significant RF interference in channels 1-6. The interference is making those channels unusable by you.
KB 58543, AirPort: Potential sources of interference
Also, is this a forum where Apple technicians reply to queries??
Take a moment to read the "Help & Terms of Use" for this area and you will discover that this area is a user-to-user discussion area. There is no guarantee that anyone from Apple will ever read any of these threads.
I was unable to find any area where I could post a direct help request regarding this!
That is because one does not exist. If you want to communicate with Apple about a problem or issue you must call them.

  • Can my Mac pass Windows viruses to other Windows machines on the network

System Adm is telling me that I cannot connect my Mac to the school network if I am using a private line that is not passing through the school firewall because I could infect his network. Is that truly the case?
    Thanks,
    todd

In addition to Graham's excellent information (I may be repeating some of it).
You can spread these by sending infected documents or e-mails to other users.
Completely true. If you receive Windows malware on your Mac via email, it can't do a thing to OS X, but you can infect a Windows user by forwarding that email with the attachment still intact.
Running Microsoft VirtualPC for Mac exposes your Mac to all Windows viruses.
True, but not quite the way it reads. VirtualPC is for running Windows via emulation on your Mac. The Windows environment can be infected the same as any Windows PC. It cannot expose your Mac to those viruses. More specifically, they cannot in any way infect OS X.
Macro viruses, such as those written for Microsoft Office products, can infect your Mac or destroy data.
Yes and no. Macro viruses tag along on infected Word documents. I have yet to see or hear of one that can do anything to OS X. So like email Windows malware, you simply become a carrier. When you get a document with a macro virus and you ignore the warning to open the document without loading the macro, it will infect your Normal document (Office X or 2004) the same as it would in Windows. From then on, Word on your Mac will infect all documents you save. One way to avoid that is to set the preferences in Office to never load macros. The other is to disallow macros to load when you open any document that has one (Word will ask you what you want to do). If Office 2008, macros have been removed from the program. You can't infect any new documents, but I don't know if opening a file that already carries macros will be stripped. It may just save them with the file again when you save an existing file with your changes. As far as the last point? No, Word macros cannot destroy data on your Mac. They are all written for Windows and will not run in OS X any more than a Windows program can.
Implementing Boot Camp and installing Microsoft Windows on your Intel®-based Mac exposes that computer to the same threats as running Windows on a PC.
Completely true. Windows is Windows. The hardware it's running on makes no difference. The Windows partition on your Mac will be exposed to all Windows malware as a Dell would be.

  • Message all OS X machines on the  network

    Guys, please help.
Is it possible to send a message which would pop up on the targets screen with AppleScript.
if you are famililar with windows i need something similar to winpopup or netsend (via dos)
Any help would help, i honestly have not got a clue where to start.

    Right,
All the taget machines need to run iChat. This can be done by have iChat in Login items in All the taget machines.
These target machines will show up on your iChat Bonjour buddies list -it's the magic of Bojour-. You can manually send text message to all target machines.
Or, you can script it. Here is a simple script:
set the_message to "test" -- this is the message you send out
set computer_name to computer name of (system info)
    tell application "iChat"
set bonjour_account to id of accounts whose (id contains "Bonjour" and id does not contain computer_name) -- this get all Bonjour client, but you
    repeat with _account in bonjour_account
send the_message to accounts whose id is _account -- send out the_message
    end repeat
    end tell

  • Can't access some websites from XP machines on the network, but Win7 PC's ok

    Hi,
We have a SBS installation with both XP and 7 PCs on it. Within the last couple of weeks the XP units have become unable to access certain websites, although others are ok. Windows 7 PC's are fine. Pings to the affected sites are also ok from either XP or
    7. Despite a lot of effort trying to discover the reason we are not any closer to a solution. Could anyone suggest how we might track down the source of the issue ?
    Many thanks

    Hi,
Please try to reset the IE on the XP client. This issue may be caused by misconfiguration of the Internet Explorer.
Please check if there is any firewall rule block the TCP port 80 of the specified website.
To check if the TCP port 80 is open, please use the portqry tool.
To download the portqry, please click the link below,
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24009
If the TCP port 80 is block on the specified website, please check the network settings. Normally, this issue is caused by the misconfiguration of the firewall. Also, incorrectly configured proxy or router will cause this issue too.
If the TCP port 80 is open, we may need to perform a network capture on the XP client.
To download Network Monitor, please refer to the link below,

  • Can Time Machine Backup to the harddrive of another machine on the network?

I have a PC on my wifi network with alot of spare room on the HD. i'd like to back up to it. Is this possible? How?
    thanks,
    rich

In theory as long as your TM can see the HD you can backup to it. But, and you would need to double check this, you may well need your HD formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I suspect your Windows HD is formatted NTFS and I doubt if you could partition re-format without loosing your data.
There are a number of options for your backup plan so come back if we're on the right track.

  • Can I programmatically update a java app on a user machine via the network?

One of the requirements of a new system that we are designing is that we can update the binary (.class) files whenever a new version of that file becomes available.
Does the java system include some mechanism for doing this? I have done some searching on this site but have not been able to locate any information on this topic.
    Thanks for your help.
    Eric Rehnke

ClassLoader - this class can be used to load class files from the network.
But my way is (or course to build a Client-Server framework)....
Have your app get it's classes from a directory (example: /app/classes/) and have a Server send the updated class file to that directory (thus updating the old files).
I have source if need be.
