Should I choose Flash Media Server?

Hi,
I'm trying to decide if I should purchase flash media server
for my streaming needs. I like working with flash, so that's why
I'm considering the flash media server.
Here is my streaming server "wishlist":
-variable playback speeds(fastforward, skip, rewind, restart,
etc)
-option of downloading entire video to local machine
-support for multiple file types or conversion/encoding
multiple file times
-security options to lock down source files
-a flexible platform to build custom players
-hook up to a database(mysql, mssql)
I looked through the flash media server specs on the Adobe
website, but they really don't get into specifics.
Thanks

  • WAMP and Flash Media Server

    I currently have WAMP(Windows, Apache,MySQL,PHP) installed as
    my primary server; I do not want to change this. What I would like
    to do is use Flash Media Server as my primary streaming server and
    be able to host media files on it. I have been informed that if I
    broadcast from the Media Server on Port 80 I will run into trouble
    when I start the WAMP server (because it works on Port 80). The
    resolution that I've been told is to put the Media Server on Port
    :8080. What I am trying to find out is if any one here is running
    the Flash Media Server as a second server using Port 8080 or is it
    smarter to just assign Flash Media Server it's own port. By the
    way, I am trying to set up a test environment that will replicate
    what the real server and application will have to do. Any advice is
    greatly appreciated. Thank You

    what version of windows are you running?.......try shutting down fms service before making changes.......I know in windows 7 you have to right click choose properties of the folder fms.ini resides in and adjust the security settings.

  • Audio not streaming correctly from Flash Media Server

    Our company has a Flex application (3.0.2) that is having a problem with audio dropping out in Windows 7.  The problem appears worse with a wireless connection, but it can’t be consistently reproduced there, either.  The only thing known for sure is that the problem has not been seen on any other version of Windows.
    The application thinks the audio is playing, because it is calling the appropriate event listeners triggered when the audio completes and when any audio cue points are hit.  The majority of our audio is streaming via Flash Media Server (3,0,2,201), but the problem was also seen using embedded sound effects.  In one instance, several clicks of a button triggered an error saying the sound effect could not be loaded, and then about a minute later, all the sound effects played at once and the user could then continue with the application.
    The problem has been repeated in IE 8, Firefox 3 and Chrome.

    Thanks for your details. But i need more info.
    Server:
    FMS      3.0.2 ?
    FMS installed in which platform Linux/windows? more details about it.
    Client:
    IE          7
    Flash Player version     ?
    WIndows 7
    Wireless connection - Was the client placed in poor bandwidth.
    Can you get the NetStream status info when u play the audio file.? We can check for the rebuffering happening at the client side.
    Can you run your audio file through flvCheck Tool to check if the media file is in good form. It is available at "\$Root|Flash Media Server\tools\flvcheck.exe"
    Now our intention should be to check the same media file with simpler application (since your production app is complicated) to ensure that the media streaming over 'client to server' is working fine.

  • A User Count in a Flash Media Server Application

    hello guys, first of all, sorry for my english...
    i am making a flash media server application and i want users to see that how many users are currently connected to this application...
    i have searched on google for 2 days and i couldnt find a good tutorial for AS3.
    i have looked at fmsguru and some other tutorial websites but those wasn't enough for me to succes...
    what i am trying to make is; a text area or dynamic text (i dont know which is most suitable for this purpose) which shows the numbers of connected user and i want it change immediately when a user connects or disconnects...
    i know there is an array as "application.clients" and i know i should use "application.clients.length" in "main.asc" file to find the number of connected users BUT i can't get this number to the text area or dynamic text in my "swf file".
    PLEASE help me by explaining a simple application which uses a "main.asc" file, an "action script" file and a "swf" file. and how to get the number of "application.clients.length", how to send (or call or get) it to the "action script" file, how to show this number in a text field or dynamic text...
    i will be very appreciated if someone explain in AS3 and make me success...
    thanks for reading...

    well here you don't even need the button just tell your textfield to update everytime the server calls after a connection or disconnection. Do you know how to write actionscript at all? Because you would be well advised not to attempt media server stuff unless you know how to do the basics. Maybe you could start out with some client only applications.
    import mx.controls.TextArea;
    import mx.controls.Button;
    import mx.utils.Delegate;
    class SimpleChat_call extends MovieClip {
    private var myTextArea:TextArea;
    private var myButton:Button;
    private var _nc:NetConnection;
    private var _chatSO:SharedObject;
    private function onLoad() {
    myButton.addEventListener("click", Delegate.create(this, onUserCount));
    public function connect( rtmpString:String) {
    _nc = new NetConnection();
    _nc.owner = this;
    _nc.onStatus = function ( info ) {
    if(info.code == "NetConnection.Connect.Success") {
    trace("connected successfully");
    this.owner.connectSO( this );
    _nc.receiveUsercount = function (count) {
    var myTextArea = this.owner.myTextArea;
    myTextArea.text = count;
    _nc.connect(rtmpString);
    private function connectSO( nc ) {
    _chatSO.connect( nc );
    you didn't even try what i suggested did you because it would have worked without changing the client

  • Recording sound without Flash Media Server?

    Hello,
    I am totally new to Flash Media Server I need to be able to record sound via a Flash app and save it to a server preferably without the use of a Flash Media Server type setup. There is no requirement for live streaming.
    Is it possible to record the sound and save in memory then pass the data/file as a query parameter to the server?
    I don't even know if I've posted this in the correct place... any help/guidance will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    You can use any publisher to publish like FMLE and publish the streams to the application in applications folder suppose application name is sampleApp then create a folder in applications folder of FMS root directory and then keep the below mains.asc file which does the recording of published streams to the sampleApp application.
    //main.asc
    application.onConnect=function(clientObj)
    return true;
    application.onPublish = function(clientObj,streamObj){
      trace("in application publish");
      streamObj.record("record");
    application.onUnpublish = function(clientObj,streamObj){
    trace("on unpublish");
    streamObj.record(false);
    I think this should solve your problem.

  • How to use flash media server with cisco show n share live event module?

    hello all
    Is it  possible to use flash media server in show n share (non dme)live event ?  i 've configured flash media server, can receive  multicast streams, bu i have no idea what to write in video url fild in the live event basic setup.

    Hi Temur,
    You should be able to stream from a Flash Media Server.
    The URL should look like this:
    rtmp://xxx.yyy.com//flv:
    You can do some tests from a PC to get the exact URL that would suit your environment.

  • Flash Media Server for iPhone

    Hi,
    I am developing an app for iPhone/iPad. The client wants to show some realtime data in the app. Something like a chat application, where even if users don't do anything (flash uses no event), they can see what other users are doing in realtime.
    I went through adobe site to see Flash media Server for mobile device. But I am confused on which version of the server should suit the type of app I am developing.
    Thanks,
    Salim

    I'm more or less in the same boat. I've got the admin console
    up. I am able to run the vodtest application locally pointing the
    video file to rtmp://localhost/vod/sample.flv or using the server
    name instead of localhost as in rtmp://mclmedia/vod/sample.flv
    I can also load the html and swf file to my xp machine that
    has access to the server via our internal network. (DNS isn't
    configured yet) But the connectionFailed message appears when I try
    to call the videos using rtmp://mclmedia/vod/sample.flv

  • Aggregated Adobe Captivate Video in Flash Media Server

    Hey,
    Has anyone attempted to implement a captivate video into Flash Media Server?
    I specifically need to know if an aggregated Captivate video will work in Flash Streaming Server. The reason I am not sure that it will is because there are multiple .swf files that an Aggregated video must communicate with and I wonder if that will cause any issues.
    Please let me know if you've run into any problems, if this works, or if you have any other information.
    Thanks!

    So an Aggregated Captivate Video is basically a compilation of several other Captivate Videos. To see what I mean, open up Captivate
    go to File --> New Project-->Aggregator Project.
    Choose the .swf files of published projects that you want to run together as a single video (aggregated .swf).
    Then, publish the Aggregator Video and you will generate a .swf file that plays all the ones you selected previously.
    So basically I am worried that Flash Media Server won't work because the main video file (the aggregated .swf) uses the component .swf files to play.
    Any thoughts?

  • Live Streaming video and Flex2(3?) + Flash Media Server?

    I've seen alot of topic on how to create video sites for
    clips, etc. with Flex and Flash Media Server, but how about live
    streaming video, like a concert or a seminar. I can't find any
    information on this at all, could anyone point me in the right
    direction?

    What you need is grab video/sound form camera/mic, publish it
    on FMS and let the other clients play it. In a few steps:
    // get camera and mic
    var cam:Camera = Camera.getCamera(); // get default camera
    var mic:Microphone = Microphone.getMicrophone(); // get
    default mic
    // if you have VideoDisplay, for monitoring
    videoDisplay.attachCamera(cam);
    // create new RTMP connection to FMS/your app
    var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
    // new stream should be create *after* nc has connected, not
    before
    // so this is executed after the below nc.connect() succeeds
    nc.attachEventListener(Event.CONNECT, function(){
    var ns:NetStream = new NetStream();
    ns.attachCamera(cam);
    ns.attachMicrophone(mic);
    ns.publish("streamname", "live"); // or "record" if you want
    to live+rec
    // connect to default instance of app 'appname' on your FMS
    nc.connect("rtmp://fms.ip.address/appname");
    If you're using Flex2 and FMS2 (the latest FMS is 3), you
    might need to
    cuange the connection encoding to AMF0 (which is what FMS2
    uses) in order for this to work.
    Hope this helps; I've written it from my head so it probably
    has mistakes, but it's the general workflow; the docs in the
    language reference for specific functions mentioned here will also
    help.

  • Questions before I buy Flash Media Server 2

    Hi! I'm considering buying Macromedia Flash Media Server 2.
    This software would be a large investment for me, so I'd really
    appreciate any answers or advice that anyone could provide. I just
    have a couple questions:
    1) Can FMS2 be installed on the same server that runs my Web
    sites? I have a Linux server that runs a few sites, and it would be
    ideal to run this software and the sites on the same server. I'm
    also wondering what port it would run on? I've used RealNetworks'
    Helix Server, which requires you to run it on a separate server
    because of port issues. I want to use Flash instead.
    2) Does this software also come with a Flash video player
    that would work with my sites? I want to be able to stream .flv
    videos from my Web sites and have a Flash player launch whenever a
    user selects one of my videos (kind of like how RealPlayer launches
    when you click a RM file). This way, the player wouldn't always be
    embedded in the page. Is that possible? I'm worried about the
    player failing to launch, or people needing to download a special
    player to view my videos.
    Thanks very much!

    1) Yes you can run it on the same box as your web server. You
    can specify any port you wish for FMS to listen on (default is
    1935)
    2) I'm not quite sure I understand. In order to view your
    videos a client will have to have a flash browser plugin installed
    - which should not be a problem as flash browser penetration is
    somewhere in the high 90th percentile (if Adobe is to believed). In
    addition, your flash application will need to make a connection to
    FMS before it can stream videos, so its not quite as simple as
    clicking on a .flv link. Your flash app will have to be embedded in
    a page (think youtube - although youtube does not use FMS).
    If you're not sure if FMS is right for you (and you sound
    like you're not sure), why don't you download the Developer edition
    and test it out? Its free and has all the features of the "full"
    version, but only gives you a license for 10 users.

  • Chat extension to flash media server

    Hi,
    We have been using flash media server with great success. We were wondering if the is any software package which works with the server to provide text chat amongst the user. I would think that there is someone who already built the software for a price.

    I am not sure if someone provides such a package. However, in case you are trying to develop such a chat system, there is a tutorial at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashmediaserver/articles/first_im_app.html which should help you understand how to build such a system. Also there is one tutorial here at http://www.fmsguru.com/showtutorial.cfm?tutorialID=36 which could help you on this

  • Flash Media Server 2 on the FreeBSD

    Hello.
    Tell me please - is Flash Media Server 2 will work on the
    FreeBSD 4.0
    Thank you.

    Sure, no problem. I wouldn't suggest it for a production
    environment, but you should be fine for developing and
    testing.

  • Whether Sophos Antivirus can stop taking connection by Flash media server?

    Hi
    Our flash media server  stops taking connection sometime. Any one have any idea about sophos antivirus?
    Please suggest what should we do.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks SE for the reply.
    But i got a message "Connection to the Server Failed. Please try to rejoin the call".
    We were not getting this problem before installation of anitvirus on our client machine. Now FMS gets down or we can say not accepting connection. Even at that time(server down condition) we can't enter into managment console of FMS. Sometime it start taking connection after one hour or two hour.

  • Flash Admin Console shows no applications on my Flash Media Server?

    Hi all,
    My employer has a Flash Media Server that I wrote a little streaming video app for a couple years ago.  Well, the videos have stopped working and I've been asked to troubleshoot.  I fired up the fms_adminConsole.swf and connected to my server.  Now, it's been a long time since I've messed with the server, but if I remember right, there was a big list of apps on the list on the left hand side of the "View Applications" view of the console.  When I log in, there are no applications listed.  If I hit the "New Instance" button under the empty list, I'm presented with a list of all the apps I think I should be seeing in the Applications list.  If I select any of these, a new application instance appears in the applications list, and I'm prompted to give it a name, the default being "_definst_".  If I hit enter to create this instance, it remains on the list and instance data appears on the right panel until the console refreshes, and then all that vanishes and I'm back to an empty applications list again.
    Going to "Manage Servers", I do see a list of applications under the applications tab that I expect to see.  The app that streams the video that's having problems is there on the list.
    Is this typical behavior for the Flash Media Server Console?  Shouldn't I have a list of apps in the "View Applications" section of the console?  I've created about a dozen to date, and they're all listed under Manage Servers > Applications, but not under "View Applications".  Can anyone point out if I'm doing something wrong here or missing something?  Or can someone confirm that I SHOULD be seeing something under "View Applications" and that there is indeed something weird going on with the server.
    Thanks for any assistance!

    What you are seeing is correct behaviour. Until and unless applications are loaded or some clients are connected to them, they wont be shown under view applications tab by default. Try connecting to one of the applications you have and then you will see it automatically gets listed there.

  • Streaming from Digital Rapids to Flash Media Server

    Hello,
    I am using a Digital Rapids StreamZ encoder (version 3.8.0) to stream towards YouTube, Dailymotion, Akamai. I wish to install a Flash server on the same VLAN as my Digital Rapids in order to check the encoding in case there is an issue on YT/DM's side. I therefore downloaded Adobe Flash Media Server and now wish to send my stream towards the AMS. Which Server URL and Stream Name should I use to configure my Digital Rapids? How should I configure the AMS to receive the stream from the DR?
    Many thanks in advance for your help and advice,
    mdicamp

    The Digital Rapids doesn't seem to recognize my destination Server URL. I guess it is because of a port issue.
    Checking the ports situation on my AMS Server (cmd -> netstat -an), I realise port 1935 (which receives RTMP) is only listening locally (127.0.0.1:1935) instead of to the exterior (I would like to have 0.0.0.0:1935). The application does not seem to have forced the port to open (I don't have any firewall).
    I hope this helps move anyone forward in helping me out. Thanks in advance !
