Should I get a Zen devi

Hi,
When I first heard about this device, I was seduced by the idea of having a small and cheap super-duper-disc changer. But after reading all the marketing texts, I'm still left with unanswered questions. If there are some kind folks here who could answer them, I would be grateful...
So far, my choice would be a Nomad Zen or a Jukebox 3. My requirements are:
- I want to put my entire CD collection on it (about 520 discs). My calculations tell me that 40 Gb is enough for that.
2 - Most of the time, the device will sit along with my other A/V components and will be connected to my receiver. I can use a "headphone plug to RCA" type of cable to do the connection but is there a better way? Does the device make a good CD-player replacement?
3 - I don't want to keep all my ripped discs on my computer. For one, I don't have the space and, two, I never listen to music on my computer. I want the device to be the primary data store for my music. I will rip a few CD at a time and delete them when they are transfered on the device. Will I have trouble building up my library this way? And, after that, will I have trouble managing my playlists on my "empty" computer?
4 - Speaking of which... I found contradictory informations about playlists. Can I create, modify and delete playlists directly on the device or am I forced to use the computer? Remember that I want to use the device as a disc changer. Every disc changer support a "program" mode. Do I have this feature with the device?
5 - Do you think I'll curse against the small display of the device when it is time to find an album or a tune amongst my 500+ CDs?
Thank you very much for any assistance.

2. I bought my first player, a Nomad Jukebox , to basically replace my car CD changer. It did just that, and I started using it indoors as well, to replace my in-house CD changer. So I can definitely recommend this for this reason. The RCA cable to headphone is really the only thing you can use, but it's not a problem.
3. This approach is fine.
4. You can create playlists on the device, although editing's?a little tedious. With software on the PC you can manage playlists on the player which is far easier, but it depends how complex and how many playlists you are looking to create.
5. I have in the past used my PC to control my player for this reason, using?a program called?Notmad Explorer which shows the entire player in a web browser. Even so, I don't find it difficult to find and queue albums on the player itself.

  • Should I get the Zen Micro Pho

    On my Xtra, I have 763 songs... And I've used 5 gigs :-(.
    I'd be able to get around ,000 songs on the Photo.
    That's alot, rite??
    Good idea? Bad?

    Creative is known for great sounding players with many features. I have the micro, and I love it. I was considering upping myself to the 8GB Micro Photo when it comes out. However, rumor has it that Apple will be giving the iPod mini an 8GB HD and a color screen... a player definatly worth looking at it if comes out.
    If you can fit your collection on a microdri've player, I suggest the Micro/iPod Mini. If you want a 20+GB player with a color screen, Creative is not the way to go. I suggest looking into the iPod, Cowon iAudio x5, or Toshiba Gigabeat.
    For reviews on these players, look at www.cnet.com. Best of luck.

  • Should I get the Zen Mic

    I like the iPod mini, but am leaning toward the Zen Micro because it has FM. However I heard some complaints about the Micro freezing up and transfering files to Windows XP. How bad is this problem? Is there a fix for it's Thanks for your help in advance.
    What is your overall satisfaction with the Zen Micro?

    Aamadi,
    From most of the posts that I have seen and from talking with customers I can say that it is unlikely for you to experience problems with this player. Much like with any electronic device on the market there are going to be units that have problems. What I have found is that in most cases the lock up is a one time happening and is repaired by a clean up.
    I plan on purchasing a Zen Micro myself and highly recommend it to everyone who is looking for a very portable high capacity player.

  • Getting Creative Zen player to connect through amarok [SOLVED]

    Edited 12-27 to include new info
    I'm trying to get myCreative Zen player to connect through amarok but am having some problems. After some looking around I figured out the libmtp in the extra repository doesn't support this player, but the newest versions do. I made a new package for libmtp-0.2.4 and installed it since there's been some tweaks that affect this player since 0.2.2 which is in testing. I also had to recompile amarok since one of libs changed a name with the new libmtp. The instructions from libmtp mentioned udev rules needed to be defined, which was done by copying a file from the source code into /etc/udev/rules.d. That file (minus the parts relating to other players, which is pretty much the same as here):
    # UDEV-style hotplug map for libmtp
    # Put this file in /etc/udev/rules.d
    ACTION!="add", GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
    ATTR{dev}!="?*", GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
    SUBSYSTEM=="usb", GOTO="libmtp_usb_rules"
    # The following thing will be deprecated when older kernels are phased out.
    SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", GOTO="libmtp_usb_device_rules"
    GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
    LABEL="libmtp_usb_rules"
    # Creative ZEN 8GB
    ATTR{idVendor}=="041e", ATTR{idProduct}=="4157", SYMLINK+="libmtp-%k", MODE="666"
    GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
    LABEL="libmtp_usb_device_rules"
    # Creative ZEN 8GB
    ATTRS{idVendor}=="041e", ATTRS{idProduct}=="4157", SYMLINK+="libmtp-%k", MODE="666"
    GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
    LABEL="libmtp_rules_end"
    When I plug the player to my usb port dmesg gives
    usb 5-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
    usb 5-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
    As my normal user amarok doesn't seem to recognize anything, and mtp-detect gives:
    libmtp version: 0.2.4
    Attempting to connect device(s)
    usb_claim_interface(): Operation not permitted
    LIBMTP PANIC: Unable to initialize device 1
    LIBMTP PANIC: configure_usb_devices() error code: 7 on line 1561
    Detect: There has been an error connecting. Exiting
    As root mtp-detect gives me a bunch of output that seems like it's doing what it should, also while it's spitting this out the screen on the player changes to say it's docked, which wasn't happening as the normal user. This makes me think it's some permissions issue. I did find things from google telling me that sometimes the user needs to be added to a certain group to use libmtp, though it seemed somewhat distro dependent. My main user is in the following groups: dbus hal network audio optical storage scanner camera users thinkpad
    However I don't think my problems are solely permission related, since even as root amarok won't recognize the player. I can use gnomad2 as root, which mostly works, though it crashes when I try and close gnomad after adding music and the player thinks it's still docked even after unplugging it. I had to use a pin to reset it just to turn it off. When I ran it from a console I got the following output at the end after the crash
    PTP: Closing session
    ERROR: Could not close session!
    inep: usb_get_endpoint_status(): Protocol error
    outep: usb_get_endpoint_status(): No such device
    usb_clear_halt() on IN endpoint: No such device
    usb_clear_halt() on OUT endpoint: No such device

    The application 'gnomad2' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
    most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed

    Any suggestions for where to go from here?

    I tried uploading onto my school website, but it doesn't seem accessable from there. However I just modified the version number from the regular Pkgbuild file from abs. What I have is:

    I've been meaning to post an update about my issues. I've figured out that when I connect the player it creates device nodes with the root group.  Some have permissions set to 666, which seems to fit with the udev rules I posted. But some of them are only rw for owner and group, others only have read permissions. As a test I tried changing the permissions by hand to 666, and I can use gnomad as my regular user, though it's buggy and seems to crash randomly (not just when I transfer files like I originally thought). I haven't been able to test what amarok does, since for some reason it stopped working this weekend and I haven't had a chance to figure out what happened. It seems there some problem with the udev rules, but I don't know much about how that works to figure out what's going wrong.

  • Bricked me a 2nd Zen! Then I get a Zen X-Fi to commiserate...you'd think I'd learn by n

    My replacement 32GB Zen has gone the same route as my first one...stone cold FROZEN. I can only turn on the unit; can't turn it off, can't play any media, can't do much in the way of navigation. But at least I think I know how it happened.
    With my original 32GB Zen, I bought the accompanying AC adapter. I used it only once to charge up Zen #, then set the PMP aside for a couple of days. Finally took it with me to work, and didn't try using it until late in the day...discovered it was bricked. No repair tool was fixing this iced thing (and lo and behold, it didn't, despite the many times I tried).
    With Zen #2 freshly replacing dead #, I also charged it via USB for the first couple of weeks...and then two days ago I put it on the AC charger. Took it off yesterday morning, was going to add new music then discovered the bad news, it was broken in EXACTLY the same manner as Zen #(!). Not amused. This one's going back for the REFUND I should've gotten with Zen #'s return. Now I'm opening up the argument with Amazon on whether I should be able to send back the AC adapter and the clear plastic Zen case for refund (can you say 'chargeback'). Clearly not amused by this, but crap happens... I guess.
    But just to prove how SICK I am...my 32GB Zen X-Fi arri'ved TODAY. I think I'm in love again. No wall wart juicing 4 U, my (disgustingly) iPhone-looking device. Stil, it sounds phenomenal, and X-Fi does improve certain tracks even if I wonder how detrimental it'll be to the battery charge. Despite the iPhone-esque look, it does have a classy appearance, though I think I prefer the matte black back of the Zen.
    Not sure I like the nine buttons over the Zen's pad-like main control; so far it's been even easier to hit the wrong button on the X-Fi than what it was with the Zen, plus the four corner buttons in the 3 x 3 pattern don't appear to do anything (me read the owner's manual? Perish the thought...). I'll miss the blue light (the Zen X-Fi's power indicator is green) and lament that the X-Fi is a tad thicker; I can't use the Zen hard acrylic case as a result (hence my desire to return the case for a refund). Guess I have to be careful until Creative has an X-Fi specific clear case available...or it bricks like my two Zens and call it a life when it comes to Creative MP3 players. The built-in speaker is okay in a pinch, but it does sound pretty bad. Do appreciate the redesigned and relocated reset button...now I just hope I never have to use it.
    And finally... I hope that THIS Zen X-Fi model won't have inherited the stupid disconnect/reconnect issue that Zen #2 brought to the table...

    I actually bought the X-Fi a couple of days before the second Zen bricked. I was already seriously considering returning the Zen because of the disconnect/reconnect problem it was having when the battery charge was full and connected with the PC (it's as if the device couldn't understand how to correctly tell itself how to stop the charging process--very frustrating, especially with the way it was affecting XP's stability every time it went through this d/r glitch). So after looking at the X-Fi here at Creative and reading a couple of comments/reviews about it, I bought one from Amazon--where I bought the Zen from as well--to compare the two. Then the brick happened, and my mind was made up for me. Only real regret is that I never got a chance to compare their performance head-to-head.
    Don't get me wrong; I really liked the Zen, especially based on my experiences with my first 32GB copy. I just didn't expect that the official Creative AC charger would be its downfall. BTW...Amazon has agreed to a refund for the charger even though it's been nearly 60 days (twice Amazon's regular limit of 30 days) since I purchased it. They're a decent company to deal with, as long as I'm straight with them and correspond with a level of courtesy and professionalism. That must be the reason why I keep spending so much of my money with them (sigh).

  • Should I get new earphon

    Hi folks,
    I'm very happy with my Zen Touch (40GB) and am currently using old spare Sony MDR-E82V earphones with it (at home I'm usually using my AKG K-66 headphones but I feel they're too big for outdoors).
    Are these old Sony earphones still up-to-date or should I get new ones? I'm very happy with how they feel inside my ears so their physical form seems to be good for me. Although I sometimes have to "turn" them into the "right" direction to get the best sound. The "problem" is that I'm listening to all kind of music, from operas (especially Wagner) and sacred music (especially Johann Sebastian Bach) to electronic pop (such as Erasure) and metal (such as Manowar).
    Any suggestions? I'd be very grateful for any advice you might have.
    David

    I'm tempted to say "if it ain't broke don't fix it" but it was only when I tried the Sony EX5 earbuds I realised what I had been missing
    Ther perennial issue with headphones is that everyone has different taste in style and sound reproduction (you'll no doubt get many responses to this post with recommendations), so it's difficult to make recommendations and it's also very difficult to go somewhere and try them, let alone get a good appreciation in that short space of time.
    Despite that here's some links to good headphone reviews.

    If you're having trouble getting your Zen up and running, seriously, go to this thread. http://forums.creative.com/creativel...essage.id=8429?So many people have gotten their Zens to work by using these methods, and the thread should've been stickied on these boards long ago. It will help stop all the unanswered questions. Ozzey

    Sorry for the slow reply. Yes, the fixes are for those V that are not recognised when plugged into a usb port. You should take the advice from altheus:?Simple solution that should work...
    Download Windows Media Player from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/download/download.aspx
    With a program such as WinRAR or WinZIP extract the file "wmp-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe"
    There should be a few EXE files:
    wmp.exe ::: Windows Media Player Program Files
    wmfdist.exe ::: Windows Media Player Distribution Pack
    umdf.exe ::: User-mode Driver Framework (THE IMPORTANT ONE!!!)
    Run them in this order.
    Uninstall the previous MTP driver that has failed, and then restart.
    Connect your Zen and it should detect and work perfectly!
    PS. You don't need to have install the Validation thing for this to work. This seemed to be the one that helped most people. If that doesn't work, go to the Microsoft and look for "issues with Zen Potarble devices". It will tell you how to rollback to WMP0 (if you are using ) so that?it will recognise the V, and then reinstall MP, or just stay with 0, your preference. P.S. For this fix, you will?need to extract?the files of WMP Beta . Beta 2 and Final don't have it.Message Edited by Ozzey on 2-08-200606:54 PM

  • What display should I get for my macbook pro?

    Hey Guys. I think this is in the correct section.
    So I have a Macbook Pro (specs at the bottom) and I am looking to add an external monitor to use as a second monitor and at other times a screen for my playstation. I have never had a monitor before so not sure how big? What resolution? What ppi? HD, UHD, 4K? Someone said something about refresh rate. I have no idea what that is. None of this stuff I know.
    Obviously I want the best screen I can have and I would connect my Macbook to it by HDMI using a Thunderbolt to HDMI converter and connect my ps3 to it by HDMI.
    What is the highest resolution a HDMI/Thunderbolt can handle?
    What screen should I get?
    Also I connected it up to my TV once and if I put my mouse at the bottom of the screen and then moved it onto my macbook screen it disapeared and didn't appear again until I moved it up and I don't want this problem
    How can i solve this?
    All help is very much appreciated.
    Thanks.      Miles.

  • Brand new Mac customer-should I get Lion?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm writing because I'm looking for support.  I just recently bought my first iMac (it was between this or a Mini) after having my 4th PC die on me in 10 years.  While I already have the machine ordered I have been doing extensive research on what to expect with my purchase and one of the things I have been reading has been some compatability issues with Lion OS.  After having gone through several Windows upgrades myself I am nervous to be jumping into a new format all together only to find that Apple is going through an update to their OS (perfect timing I suppose).  That being said:
    I apparently am eligible for the FREE upgrade to Lion with my iMac purchase.  Should I get it or stay with Snow Leopard?
    I have the newest iMac out there that is the base model but includes 4GB of RAM and AMD 6750M graphics card.
    I'm also considering the newest generation Time Capsule (2TB).  Will that work okay with Lion as well?
    Also, last question, since I haven't received the Mac yet I want to make sure I got an okay model.  I was trying to pick what appeared to be middle of the road between a Mac Mini and the iMac line.  I'm not expecting to get it until tomorrow but am sure I can trade an unopened computer if  that's best.  Because I had a 23 inch monitor and keyboard/mouse with my former PC I had a hard time choosing.
    Thanks for answering any or all of my questions.  Sorry if this message has the new guy feel.

    Almost certainly if you purchased your iMac directly from Apple it will come with Lion on it already so you won't need to upgrade.
    Time Capsule will work fine with Lion.
    If you bought directly from Apple you have 14 days to return the computer, so if you are not happy for any reason they will refund your money. At that point you can decide if you want a different model or not.
    I'm sure your experience will be a good one so don't worry. Reading in these forums sometimes can jade a new user, however please remember these are technical help forums that people come to when they're having issues and are not representative of the general population.

    Hi all,
    In SAP BW system landscape we should have separate servers for DEV, QA and PROD.
    whether one server is enough for DEV and we can use virtual servers to QA & PROD?

    Hi chandu,
    In my previous Organisation we got exactly the same landscape for BW as you described.BCS(BAYER COPSCIENCE LTD) operates a BW System Landscape with one centralized  Global Development System and three regional Quality Assurance and Production Systems located in Europe, Asia Pacific and Americas. This Landscape is to ensure consistent data models to be available in all regional systems as well as to minimize development efforts and make use of respective synergies.
    This is perfectly working  for BCS ,and I think, this is the most approriate way of handling of resources.

  • Excise invoice should not get created without PGI

    Hi,
    I have a scenario where the billing document is being generated by the customer without PGI after creation of outbound delivery for exports. (This is as per customer's requirement - Copy control maintained in VTFL for the same - copying requirements 11 )
    This creates a situation - excise invoice can be created without PGI - which creates problems for customer. This should not happen.
    Customer wants a check during the excise invoice creation - excise invoice should not get created if PGI has not been done.
    Kindly advise as to how this can be done.

    Dear Saravanan
    Two options are there
    -  in your existing routine itself, you can specify the control in such a way that unless the preceding document is PGId
    -  apply excise user exits like J_1I7_USEREXIT_EXCISE_BEF_SAVE to achieve the requirement.

    Dear All,
    We  have a requirement that excise invoice should not get generated unless chapter ID data is maintained for all the materials in the invoice.( when there is more than one item and chapter id is not maintained for all the items)
    At present excise invoice is getting generated for single item which has chapter ID maintained and  the items without chapter ID data are left out from the excise invoice. This results in an incorrect invoice.
    We want to ensure that excise invoice is not created, unless all the items in the billing document have chapter ID maintained.

    Dear Muralidhar, Lakshmipathi,
    Thanks for the solution.
