Should I get stock 20" 2Ghz with 2 year or upgrade HDD+Wireless mouse+1 yea

Ok In the UK John Lewis sell the iMac with a 2 year warranty as standard. However it has to be a stock one.
Looking on the Apple UK store I see the upgrade from 250Gb HDD to 320 HDD is £29 and the Wireless mouse £12, so I was going to go for that, but will only get a 1 year warranty off Apple direct.
What do you think is the best option? The wireless mouse seperate to buy is £50!!! alone
Cheers

These are simply my opinions but:
All Apple mice are worse than useless. I actually paid the £12 extra for the wireless one. I lasted about 20 minutes and it went back in the box. I'd rather have a functional mouse. So I'm sticking with my nice Microsoft mice which are actually comfortable to hold and the five buttons are great for Exposé, Dashboard etc.
250GB is pretty small nowadays. With the amount of digital content most of us have now you'll run out pretty quickly.
cheers

I was wondering if I should get a new iPod. Can you
give me some help. I wanted to know the pro and cons.
It depends. Do you have an earlier version of iPod? If you do, and it still works well, then I would wait. The only reason I would recommend getting a new iPod is if you had an earlier iPod break; you have a low capacity mp3 player; you want to have a color screen. I recently had an unofrtunate event happen with a 6 gig mini iPod. I have done all I can to try and fix it, but to no avail. So, I ended up looking to buy another iPod. I did some research, and found that buying a new iPod was a good choice. I did think about the nano, but only one will hold the amount of songs I have. The one that does is the 8 gig black mini. However, it costs $249. I then noticed that the 30 gig video iPod also costs $249. Since I am was not worried about size, I purchased a 30 gig video iPod. I am glad I did. It is just a little bigger than my mini, but holds 5 times more music, and also videos, and has a color screen. The one thing I liked about the mini was that it had an aluminim housing. If you get a video iPod, be sure to get a good iSkin case for it to help keep it safe. After owning the 30 gig iPod for a while, I have really enjoyed it. I haven't had any issues with it at all.

  • Should I get a POST screen with barebones?

Got a new barebones Wind PC Nettop, popped in RAM, attached known working (but old) VGA monitor (Compaq 460P, built 1994) & keyboard, powered on.
Blue light on in front.  No VGA image.
Popped out RAM, did same, and still no VGA image (nor signal, as far as I can tell).
    Removed keyboard - no image.
Should I be seeing anything?  Is there a minimum spec for the VGA monitor that I need to have?
    Thanks!
    Henry

    Got a new Wind PC.
Popped in RAM from MacBook I upgraded.  Is labeled:
    NT512T64UH8B0FB-3C  0747.CN
    512MB.2RX16.PC2-5300S-555-12-A2.667
    M207B210ED.X2
Tried 2 different SIMMS of the same kind.
Machine never goes into POST.  (Doesn't go into POST without RAM, either, but I'm assuming it needs RAM to go into POST.)
Any reason this RAM wouldn't work?  I thought it matched the specs.
Nothing else is in the machine.  I did both the JBAT1 trick and remove the battery trick just in case there was something wrong with the BIOS settings.  Still no POST.
(The front blue light does come on, and the fan always kicks in immediately, even though it is a cool 60 degrees in this room.)
    Thanks!

  • Should I get my new MBP with 4 GB RAM direct from Apple?

I'm close to buying a new MBP.
I have read all these posts about freezes, particularly likely when using 4 GB RAM, reduced in frequency but not eliminated by Apple's system software upgrade.
I know folks have saved money buy purchasing a machine with 2GB of Apple RAM and then getting a 4GB kit from an external supplier.
But with this problem still kind of a concern, is it just easier to address with Applecare if one buys the 4GB from Apple?
The one flawless external supplier seems to be Kingston, but their 4GB kit for a late 2008 MBP is $170.

    Thanks for the posts.
I think that with the particular history of these 15" Macbook pros, I ultimately decided that this was a situation where the Apple-provided 4GB might be worth it, at $135).
It's about $40-45 more than what a 4GB kit might cost at a number of suppliers (and of course, I don't get to take out and hold onto a couple extra 1GB's, which is always a benefit with buying after-market RAM), but it does make it easy to make any freezing-recurrences entirely an Applecare issue.
My current 15" Aluminum G4 PB is the one that had (and has recurrently had, despite 2 logic board replacements for free) bad RAM slots. I think that I might have saved a step and some time if I had Apple-installed RAM.
Without the particular history of RAM-related freezes with the new late 2008 15" MacBook Pro, however, I think one could easily justify just using an external supplier.

  • I'm going to college. Should I get a Macbook Pro13in with the I5 or I7. I play league of legends and record music. my laptop hecka lags so i wanna avoid that. I stream movies all the time. I5 is $1100 and I7 is $1400.i want my laptop to last 10yr  help!:)

ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!!! please! the difference between i5 and i7 for me is only $300, but is it durable or worth it in the long run???

I don't think that you'll get any notebook (or any computer, these days) to last for ten years! I did have a MacBook Pro that lasted me for 6 years, and is still operational, but it simply can't be upgraded any longer.
If you're going to play games, record music, etc., the dual-core i7 is going to be your best bet, however - well worth the $300 difference.
    Just my 2¢...

  • Should I get a Time Capsule, an Airport Extreme, or a Linksys Wireless N?

Hi I have several questions before I make my purchase. I've got 2 computers in my upstairs bedroom that are wireless. I currently have a Wireless router which is a Linksys WRT54G.
It's already getting on in age so I was thinking of replacing it with a better wireless router. I'm deciding weather I should go with a Linksys N or go the apple route.
Will I get faster internet if I go with a Linksys Wireless N? What is the difference between G and N?
I was thinking of getting a Time Capsule because I wanted an automatic backup of my data.
Is a time capsule going to perform the same as a Linksys? Which router is better?
what is the difference between Time Capsule and Airport extreme. Are they basically the same with the only difference being the hardrive?
If I get a Time Capsule then do I still need a Linksys router? Is it easy to setup a wireless network using a Time Capsule or Airport Extreme?
Last question. My mom's computer upstairs uses a Linksys Wireless G usb adapter. It is also getting on in age.
The connection is always labeled as low and sometimes she can't go on the internet. What would be a much better wireless adapter for my mom's computer?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Enough of a difference for it to be worthwhile.
I was thinking of getting a Time Capsule because I wanted an automatic backup of my data.
The backup app is Time Machine, not Time Capsule. TM can work with any external HDD connected to the Mac, but only TC is officially supported for wireless backups by Apple. Hacks are possible to connect a USB HDD to an Extreme.

Better if we are talking N vs. G.

Yes, but that is a significant difference.
If I get a Time Capsule then do I still need a Linksys router?
    No.
Is it easy to setup a wireless network using a Time Capsule or Airport Extreme?
If you can setup your Linksys, you should be able to setup the AirPort as well.

Sorry, none off the top of my head. Maybe you can provide the details on the computer she has.

  • 5% to 15% of sites fail to open due to 706 error. Started happening when I upgraded from FF 3.22; getting worse and worse with each FF 11 upgrade.

E.g., reading an online newspaper. I will open many tabs with different articles. About 1 out of 10 tabs will have a 706 error, which goes away when I click the reload button.
It's most noticeable then, but it occasionally happens (1 out of 10 sites) when I click a single link off my bookmarks menu, or manually enter a URL.
I think FF is not y waiting long enough for some kind of response from the remote link.
Like I said, this started happening when I upgraded from 3.22

All the page says is “failure to read response”
    No proxy server.
I’ve got lots of add-ons: NoScript, BeefTaco, Ghostery, etc. How do I get a list for you automatically?

  • Brand new Mac customer-should I get Lion?

    Hi everyone,
I'm writing because I'm looking for support.  I just recently bought my first iMac (it was between this or a Mini) after having my 4th PC die on me in 10 years.  While I already have the machine ordered I have been doing extensive research on what to expect with my purchase and one of the things I have been reading has been some compatability issues with Lion OS.  After having gone through several Windows upgrades myself I am nervous to be jumping into a new format all together only to find that Apple is going through an update to their OS (perfect timing I suppose).  That being said:
I apparently am eligible for the FREE upgrade to Lion with my iMac purchase.  Should I get it or stay with Snow Leopard?
I have the newest iMac out there that is the base model but includes 4GB of RAM and AMD 6750M graphics card.
I'm also considering the newest generation Time Capsule (2TB).  Will that work okay with Lion as well?
Also, last question, since I haven't received the Mac yet I want to make sure I got an okay model.  I was trying to pick what appeared to be middle of the road between a Mac Mini and the iMac line.  I'm not expecting to get it until tomorrow but am sure I can trade an unopened computer if  that's best.  Because I had a 23 inch monitor and keyboard/mouse with my former PC I had a hard time choosing.
Thanks for answering any or all of my questions.  Sorry if this message has the new guy feel.

Almost certainly if you purchased your iMac directly from Apple it will come with Lion on it already so you won't need to upgrade.
Time Capsule will work fine with Lion.
If you bought directly from Apple you have 14 days to return the computer, so if you are not happy for any reason they will refund your money. At that point you can decide if you want a different model or not.
I'm sure your experience will be a good one so don't worry. Reading in these forums sometimes can jade a new user, however please remember these are technical help forums that people come to when they're having issues and are not representative of the general population.

  • Should I get a fully upgraded MacBook air or should I compromise the thinness for a MacBook pro retina

Hi I need to get a Mac for high school should I get a MacBook air with i7 and 8gb of ram or should I get a MacBook pro retina
I make music surf the web and check emails and play games on my Mac should I compromise the portability of the air for the power of the pro
    Please please please help

My suggestion - go with the maxed out Air.
Right now, there are so many issues with the Retina. Nothing against the Retina since I ordered one.
In any event, you can go with the Retina if you wish and if you're not happy with it, you can return it within the 14 days return/exchange policy and then go with the Macbook Air if you wish to do so.
Whatever you decide to purchase in the end, I'm sure you'll be quite happy with it.
    Good luck.

  • Should i get quicktime pro?

ok, i have a 60gb. i bought it so i could put full length movies on it. i want to take the movies from DVD to the itunes. i have been trying to use a DVD decrypter and videora for the past 2 days and it wont work. to use the decrypter, i have to save the decrypted video on my harddrive, which does not have any room left. so should i get quicktime pro? with that program do i have to save any large files on my harddrive? also, can i convert DVDs to my ipod. thanks.

It would hook up over USB, Firewire, or Ethernet.
You can get them at most computer/electronics stores.
    They aren't extremely cheap.
Either way, you need storage to convert a DVD. If ext. HDs are too expensive (which they can be) then look at other options. You just need storage space to convert movies. QT Pro doesn't change that.

Any suggestions for making this work with Mountain Lion?  I've tried all similar solutions on web.  I've been able to get this to work with Lion, and after upgrading to Mountain Lion it seems to hold true (doesn't make me implement again).  But when I went from OSX 10.6 to Mountain Lion and have to implement it on 10.8 - it isn't working. • How much RAM should I get my new MacBook installed with?

How much RAM should I get my new MacBook installed with? I'm planning on getting a new Macbook sometime this fall. I'll probably be a light user, mostly internet, email, and your occasional Letter/Envelope.
Are their any other options that I'll want to make sure that I get?
Oh, and this will also be my very first Mac.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

In the link Alvin Ray posted it shows the different configurations that can be used in RAM. Officially Apple states that the MacBook supports 2 GB Ram. It can hold 4 GB but only uses 3 GB. The 4 GB would only benefit the matched pair use for optimum graphics. Unless you do a lot of very graphic intensive work 3 GB should be fine.

I bought iTunes Match; nonetheless, on iTunes Radio I routinely get ads.  Apple says that with iTunes Match one should not get ads.  Whaddup?

Requiring Match to be switched on, even though we have paid, to get ad free Radio can be costly.  Why?
Because if you want to listen to Radio with cellular data (not much data required) you are also agreeing to Match over cellular which can suck data like you won't believe.
