Should I partition on the Mac?

I've got the full CS4 Master Suite. I'm just about to get a new iMac with 2TB internal HD, 16GB RAM.
Can anyone tell me the best way to set up the iMac's HD to get the best from Premiere Pro?
I've just read Harm Millaar's interesting post: Storage rules for an editing rig. Some basics.
I was stunned because I always thought partitioning and journalling were good. I also though external HDs slowed things down. Mine certainly seem to on my existing machine.
My questions are:
Does this advice apply to Macs the same as PCs?
Should I avoid partitioning my internal 2TB HD?
Is it really better to have several external's connected rather than rely on the one 2TB internal?
If I connect any other External HDs (via Firewire 800), should I not partition these?
Should I keep an external HD plugged in (via Firewire 800) just as a scratch disk? - And what's the optimum size for a scratch disk?
Should I switch off Journalling? (Apple advises it should be kept on except for partitions with read only files)
Please Help.

Nick,
While I specifically had PC's in mind when I wrote the article, due to my lack of expertise on Mac's, some basic rules apply to all computers. The more you spread disk activities over more disks, the better. Look at it another way, you want to render your timeline. If clock speed is the same then of course the more cores you have, the faster it goes. A single core CPU can never measure up to multi-core CPU's. The same happens with disks. If you have only one disk, it is comparable to having a single core CPU, when you spread the load over 4 disks, it is comparable to a quad core CPU.
Partitioning does not increase the number of disks, it only fakes it, but physically it is still a single disk (like a single core).
I agree with Jim, get a smallish (80+ GB) disk for OS & Programs, and get as many large disks as fit into your system for projects, media, preview and scratch, media cache etc. It is like collecting cores. Maybe this latest article is also of interest to you:
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/525263?tstart=0
To put it another way:
For video editing you are better of with 4 x 250 GB disks than 1 x 1 TB disk

No, you can't partition a Time Capsule's internal HD.  Both partitions will back up to the same sparse bundle. keeping the backups for each partition separate.
Time Machine will not take the two OSX partitions as two different computers, but for best results, exclude the Snow Leopard drive from backups on the Lion partition, and exclude the Lion partition from backups on the Snow Leopard partition.
There may be some files on the Lion partition that Time Machine on Snow Leopard won't like, among other things.  See #10 in  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details.

Review this page for functionality and capabilities of Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.x.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some additional online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, or CPU Drop-in DVD on them.

Before upgrading to any OS X version, check to see if your Mac needs a Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
Once Tiger 10.4.x is installed, you can use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

  • Should I upgrade to the Mac ML or Win 8 version of LR5?

I've got two laptops (long story) that I could choose from for traveling and using LR; I have LR4 on a Macbook Pro 2.26 Penryn machine right now. But I just got an Acer M5-481PT 6644 which has a somewhat bigger screen, I3 1.7, and a small cache-type SSD (sounds kinda like a hybrid; I don't have the machine in hand right now). The Acer has Windows 8 and a touchscreen. The Acer is maxed at 6 gb RAM, the MBP has the max as well. I'm not doing a ton of editing, mostly organizing, converting from RAW, cropping, and some stuff like converting to B&W, so raw processor power isn't that important.
I need to bring the Acer on my trip for some other reasons, and I'm wondering if I lose much, if anything, by upgrading to LR5 on Windows instead of Mac (the store here seems to give me that option), or whether I should just continue with it on the Mac platform. If it matters, I'm getting  into using an iPad for some of this stuff, although I found the integration with LR on the desktop left a lot to be desired; didn't save me as much work as I expected. I also dunno if anyone has used LR5 with Mavericks, or whether that should be a consideration.
AFAIK Adobe still requires one to have separate licenses for each platform, even if you have a Win laptop and Mac desktop for example. Sorta lags.
I am gonna download the demo of the Windows version, but wanted feedback before I go to all the trouble of getting down the road with it.
    thanks,
    Rob

AFAIK Adobe still requires one to have separate licenses for each platform, even if you have a Win laptop and Mac desktop for example.
Lightroom is one of the primary exceptions to that policy. Its serial number is multi-platform.
Provided you've got the right installer (.exe for Win or .dmg for OSX) then your serial number will work on both and you can install up to two seats per license (Mac/Mac, Win/Win or Mac/Win).

  • Should I go for the Mac book pro or the iMac?

Here's my dilemma: I am about to be a sophomore in college and my HP laptop just isn't cutting it for my regular use. My question (which I know is hard to answer) is whether I should purchase the Mac book pro or an iMac. Keep in my I have an iPhone and an iPad, which both come in handy for browsing. I currently use my iPad to keep most of my notes and lectures, but I still need a good computer. I need advice from someone who  has had this same problem or owns both an iMac and MacBook Pro. I know my iPad doesn't replace a laptop and I will probably be told to decide whether I need portability, but I would like to hear from someone who also had to make this decision. I'm not leaning to one or the other right now. I am at my home for a good bit, but I do travel around a lot since I am in college. With google drive and other apps I can do most of my writing on my iPad, but for printing reasons I still need the computer. So what are some opinions on which is a better but considering my needs?

In college, my guess would be that portablity would be very important. Since the iMac isn't that sort of eliminates it from consideration.

  • How can I uninstall Bootcamp and Recover the partition for the Mac HD

How can I uninstall Bootcamp and recover the partition for the IMac HD?

Boot into OSX.  Go back into the Bootcamp utility in the Utilities folder and re-run it.  It will give you the option to remove the Windows partition and make the OSX partition fill the whole drive again.  OSX will NOT be lost in the process.  No re-installing necessary.  Only takes a few minutes or less to complete.

  • CanoScan 9000F scanner won't work on my MacBook Pro even though it should be compatible with the Mac 10.7.2 OS.

My new CanoScan 900F scanner won't work on my MacBook Pro even though I've followed all instructions to make it compatible with the 10.7.2 OS. The USB connection isn't recognised. What else con I do?

I have a similar problem with a new CanoScan 9000F which I tried to use without any success on my desktop computer (Mac Pro 5,1) and laptop (Macbook Pro 1,2) both running OS 10.6. Problem is identical on both, viz:
        •    Scanning process appears to start, a message comes on the screen: Scanning do not open document cover followed by Scanning...
        •    This is then replaced by the message: Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off. Check status. Scanner driver will be closed. 2.155.33
I've spent several hours on the phone with Canon support but having uninstalled/installed/reinstalled/updated/turned on/turned off/unplugged/plugged/restarted innumerable times, the problem is exactly the same. The scanner icon shows up in the Printer & Fax System Prefs (though without the little status lights) and shows as being connected in the USB tree. I think it's a problem with the scanner, Canon bods are suggesting the Macs are at fault and suggest I try connecting to a wintel (hawk, spit) and it's 100km to the nearest Canon service centre.
Any suggestions as to what might be the problem/s and what I might be able to do to fix it/them?
    Thanks.
By the way, bought the Canon to replace a HP Scanjet 8300 which I've used for 6 years almost without problems. Any that I have had have been fixed merely by turning the scanner off then on after a 10 second rest.

  • Should i partition my new mac?

Hey i was recently informed that if i partition my macbook pro it will have better performance and use applications faster. as i am a design student i need to use a lot of adobe programmes which usually slow down any computer, and have varioud open at a time. is it recommended to partition the hard drive into two? one for applications and other for files? and if so, how would i do this?

There are a lot of opinions about storage partitioning.  I do not bother partitioning the internal storage, but do partition the external drives I use.  That is to allow use of more than one Mac OS X and separate backup partitions.  External drive partitions also permit specific partitions to store things like iPhoto libraries instead of on the internal space.
A good source of external drives is OWC, http://www.macsales.com I have three of their drives.

Does anyone have a super smooth running mac with FCP2 on it? If so, how much would it cost to put this mac together? Any help woudld be great!

How much experience to do you have editing and what are your goals? Is this a business? A hobby? How much do you want to spend?
    If you are serious ...
MacPro 2.66 min 3.0 better 8 core not really nec yet. get 4GB RAM with the 4 core machines - 8 GB with the 8 core, to run motion you'll need the x1900 video card.
Fill the bays with 500GB drives
Get an Apple 23" Cinema Display or the HP 2407. Get two if you can.
Get a Kona LHe HD card to drive your external PAL monitor. It will also allow you to convert incoming HDV to ProRes422 on the fly.
A good set of near field audio speakers for mixing.
You'll need a tape deck for the appropriate formats you want to shoot as well as a mixing board to route audio.
A good chair. A very good chair. You'll spend a lot of time in it.
    Cost -
Figure at least $4,000 US for the computer, ram and drives/ ~ $1500 for computer monitors/~$1600 for the Kona/ a few hundred to thousands for an external pal monitor/ several hundred for the near field speakers/ $5-600 or so for the mixer/ at least $1500 for a DV/HDV tape player / and on and on.
However, before you spend a penny, go intern with someone or a station that does post production. It may save your life.
    Good luck.

  • Should I invest in the Mac Warranty program?

I'm thinking of purchasing a MacBook and wanted to know if the warranty program is worth the $250 investment? I ccurently use an Acer with Vista and I have a broken mousepad and have been having problems with Windows mail and with space on my data drive. I'm hoping to have better luck with a Mac but I've been reading here about problems folks are having and I'm wondering if a Mac is worth the extra $$. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    B

the macbook is so poorly designed, with all kind of unexpected problems I never imagined would happen to an apple computer, that yes, it's a must.
I would recommend reconsider the macbook thou, i own the late 2006 blackbook and after 18 months the problems started to show up: cracked case, wake up from sleep every 20 seconds or so draining the battery out, unexpected shuts downs with low battery, bluetooth not available every 5 minutes, isight unavailable from time to time, and that's for me. In the last 2 months it's been an avalange of all the problems I didn't experience for 17 months, being, during that time happy with my notebook. I use this crappy notebook almost never now, just when I have a presentation away from the office, where i have a mac pro sitting in my desk, at least for now, without any problems, but with apple care, something i missed with the notebook.
want a tip? flickr crackbook and have at least a look to what happens with the case. They'll replace it, the first time it's almost funny, but the third,in two months... isn't funny anymore goin back again and again to the store.
apple computers simply works, yep, but for a while, after that, if u don't have apple care say goodbye to ur investment.
I hope someone warned me about this, that's why i'm taking my time, buy a macbook at your own risk, and consider the 250 extra for the apple care part of the price of the computer.
    good luck

  • Late 2013 iMac 27".  Used boot camp and installed windows 7 pro.  While in Windows 7, in my pc the mac os does not show.  Is there anyway to fix this outside of restoring entire computer and trying again.  Thank you from a mac newbie

Hello.  I bought a new iMac 27" with the following specs:
    3.5GHz Intel Core i7 Quad-Core (Haswell)
    32GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
    3TB Fusion Drive
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M Graphics (4GB)
    27" LED-Backlit IPS Display
    2560 x 1440 Native Resolution
    802.11ac/a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0
Thunderbolt, USB 3.0, SDXC Card Reader
720p FaceTime HD Camera, Dual Mics
    Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion (64-bit)
After installing all Mac update, used Bootcamp to create a Windows 7 drive.  Everything went fine to a point.  While in my Mac OS i can see the windows partition just fine and see/edit documents.  However, when in the Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, I cannot see the mac os in my computer at all.
Can someone please help this mac owner newbie?  This process worked fine on my mac mini and i have no troubles.  It is just on my new iMac that it wont work/show the highlighted paragraph above
Any ideas and/or help would be greatly appreciated.

I understand that much.  On my MAC Mini, if you look above at original post, I CAN see both OS while in the Windows 7 partition or the MAC OS.  This is NOT the case on my iMac.  Again, when in the MAC OS I can see the windows partion and move information between the two that way.  When in the WINDOWS partition, the only one that shows is the Windows OS from my computer or network.  The only way you can tell its even a MAC is the bootcamp icon in the bottom right corner of toolbar.  Both have same version of MAC OS so both should work same way..  When i double click on my computer, it should show both the Windows drive AND the MAC (as does my mini and another iMac 21.5 that i have).  This iMac does not do that - only shows windows.

  • How can we get the .mac password to stay?

I've finally decided to brave the potential address book loses in an attempt to sync them all together. Two of three are able to access the .mac. This one cant. It asks me to configure .Mac first. Ok, I try to do just that, but there's a problem adding my password into the .mac area of the system prefs. When I type in the password, it removes itself when I click on the iDisk tab. It says my password is missing, and I should put it in the .mac tab. Ok,i put it back, and it re-removes it. So I put it back, & click on "sync now ". It says, "You dont have a .Mac account, please configure .mac first." Yeah, fine, if it only let me. This OS is 10.2.8, the other two are 10.3.9 & 10.2.8.

  • Can I make a bootcamp Partition on the HDD on an iMac 21.5" with SSD and HDD

I am planning to buy an iMac 21.5" . I am not sure yet, whether to get one with ssd and hdd pre-installed. But I would like to, cause it's much faster.
In the manual of the boot camp it says that if you have more than one internal hard drive and you wanna put bootcamp on one that isn't the first, you have to remove the other hard drives. That would be hard cause you can't open the iMac easily. And especially not without loosing guarantee.
So my question is. Has anyone installed windows with bootcamp on an hdd partition on an iMac pre-installed with ssd (on which is macos x) and hd(on which I want my windows partition and the Mac files such as photos and videos)? It must be possible without opening the iMac right?
    Thanks for your help.

27" iMac: Apple's SSDs are still quite slow
    Community Search: "iMac SSD"
That article is misleading to an extent and applied to the workstations with 4 internal drives and easy to access - and misleading as to why other drives had to be removed etc.
As for warranty, it use to be a customer upgraded part to swap out hard drives. All that is needed to disconnect the data cable going to the drive.
