Simple GUI admin tools?

Hello,
I am trying to customize arch linux for a windows user, who does not know linux, but want to use it And all this is on an old Pentium 600MHz with 128MB RAM, so I am looking for light solutions.
So I have installed icewm with XP theme, rox, xfe and idesk, which basically resemble WindowsXP.
But now I am searching for simple GUI admin tools to manage users (add new user, change password). I would prefer the "unix way" - one simple tool for one task, instead of one Swiss-army-knife app. The only two tools I found are linuxconf/gnome-linuxconf (which unfortunately is not developed anymore) and webmin/usermin (which needs a webserver, and is way too complicated). Do you know any useful tools like this? Do you have any other recommendations? For example, I could not find simple and not terminal-only mixer, and there is no mixer tray for icewm, so I had to use aumix-gtk ang gnome-alsamixer (both of which are too complicated).
Do you know similar projects? Or if other (possibly "mini") distros use some light and not distro-specific tools? Please share your recommendations.
Regards,
miko

all arch has is webmin and usermin really and yes they aren't super easy to use... I agree it would be handy to have something basic in arch like that. Just doesn't exist as far as I know.

    Tried it, worked as expected. Nice simple interface (maybe add a close button on the info window, well, maybe it's normal like this, i just don't like killing windows from outside(the window manager)).
    Not that i'd use it, i rarely change my background image and if i do i do it via feh or similar on cli directly.
    Btw, i modified the PKGBUILD a little, maybe you like the changes:

  • Lion server VPN + Server Admin Tools 10.7

    Hi,
    I followed this guide http://macminicolo.net/lionservervpn to try to set up VPN on my lion mac mini server.
    I also used Server Admin Tools 10.7 as instructed in the guide.
    After completing the steps in the guide, I cannot get VPN to work, plus I have extra problems as below:
    my mini cannot connected to the Internet or local network shares. I found under "Network" setting there was extra VLan created by the system automatically showing as "System Test--Connection error". After I delete this extra connection and revert my Ethernet to its original settings I can connect to the Internet again.
    Server Admin Tools 10.7 seem to retains all its settings from the guide on NAT, Firewall etc. doesn't matter if I had removed the current server and created a new server in the left pane. Is there anyway I can restore the Server Admin Tools to its programme defaults? I suspect these settings are affecting my networks and I cannot get rid of them completely.
    Would VPN still work if I just set it up in the server app? I haven't been able to get it work this way. I also want to find out is your guide for using the VPN to connect to the Internet off the server as a way to bypass restrictions? Do I have to set it up this way as the guide if I just to want to set up a VPN for simple fireshareing?
    What did this command in the guide do to my mini? I was hopping if I cannot get VPN to work, then I should at least reverse the effects of this command. How do I undo this command please? "sudo serveradmin settings vpn:Servers:com.apple.ppp.l2tp:DNS:OfferedServerAddresses:_array_index:0 = "192.168.2.1"

    Thanks BrianFL. This helps hugely. Yes, I just to set up a simple filesharing VPN not the kind of VPN that bypass Internet censorship. I use ethernet connection directly from my router yes.
    1. I just need to use the server app to set up a VPN and port forwarding. That is it?
    2. The setting I have made according to the guide with Server Admin Tools seems never going away, even after I deleted the server that has all the settings inside Server Admin Tools. Upon creating a new server inside Server Admin Tools, the new server inherits all the settings from the one I just deleted. Any idea how I can restore to Server Admin Tools's defaults settings?
    3. Even VNC (I use RealVNC) on the mini stopped working after I made changes according to the guide and deleted all the changes I can find. What is the address format for lion's build in VNC (192.168.0.100:5800?) like? I forgot how it is.
    Thanks so much!

  • OBIEE Admin Tool (11g) takes very long to start up

    I am running on Windows 8.1, on a new, fairly powerful desktop machine, and launching the BI Admin Tool takes much longer than (I feel) it should. I haven't timed it but it's in the ballpark of 15-30 minutes. I double-click the shortcut and immediately I see a black console window with the title "BI Administration", but it takes such a long period of time to eventually open a GUI window. I can observe via Task Manager that the CPU appears to be utilized constantly during this startup time. Could I have something configured incorrectly? Any advice on solving this problem would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
    If you look at the certification matrix for OBIEE you will see the Admin Tool is currently not officially supported on Windows 8.1, for now it's only up to Windows 7 (and starting from Windows XP if not wrong).
    Making it work on Windows 8.1 is a workaround (I remind I read it require the 32bit version even on a 64bit OS) so you can't complain if it's taking long or not working at all.
    For a perfectly working Admin Tool stay on supported environment => use a virtual machine.

  • Visual admin tool&configer tool

    whta is main difference of visual admin tool&configer tool

    Hi Raghava,
    This is a post by some gentleman, I tried figuring out the thread but could not succeed.
    VISUAL ADMINISTRATOR
    The J2EE Engine Visual Administrator is a graphical user interface (GUI) that enables administration of the whole cluster, all cluster elements, and all modules running on them. It provides remote monitoring and management of managers, services, libraries, and interfaces working on each element in a single GUI
    Visual Administrator includes functions for:
    a) Obtaining general information about a service, manager, interface, or library (for example, its name, group, and so on).
    b) Logging on to the J2EE Engine via the Visual Administrator tool
    c) Administrating and changing the properties either specific or common for each service or manager
    d) Configuring the global properties
    e) Runtime administration and control.
    Read out more about its features on VISUAL ADMINISTRATOR.

    CONFIG TOOL :-
    The Config Tool enables offline configuration of the J2EE Engine cluster elements. It is XML-based and allows exporting the system configuration for later use.
    When you run the J2EE Engine Config Tool via a GUI or text-only interface, it connects to the database and scans the server configuration. The information provided is passed to the corresponding interface that is used for configuration.
    Each change you can perform corresponds to a particular task in the Batch Config tool.
    All modifications made using the J2EE Engine Config Tool can be exported to an XML file for later use.
    two types:-
    a) GUI Config tool :- The J2EE Engine GUI Config Tool enables offline configuration of J2EE Engine cluster elements concerning serviceu2019s and manageru2019s properties, adding new server processes, changing Java parameters, exporting the system configuration to an XML file, and so on.
    After installing the SAP Web AS Java, a configtool directory is created, containing a configtool script file. Double clicking on this file starts the Config Tool.
    b) Text Only Config tool:- The text-only Config Tool enables you configuration of J2EE Engine cluster elements using a text-only based interface. It enables you to change the cluster element properties, JVM settings, add new elements, export the system configuration to an XML file, and so on.
    After installing SAP Web AS Java, a configtool directory is created under <SAP_install_dir>/<system_name>/<instance_name>/j2ee, containing a consoleconfig script file. Double clicking on this file starts the text-only Config Tool.

  • HT1822 Mac OS X server admin tools: non-server editions of Mac OS 10.6?

    On my iMac, I am running the installation of OS X that it shipped with + updates up to 10.6.8.  I know there are server admin tools available on the Apple support website, that do stuff like manage groups.  I am looking for a GUI to look at ALL the users, groups, permissions, etc. (including hidden ones like _www for apache) on my system, without having to dig through config files in /etc and/or use the dscl command line utility.
    The referenced article says I can find the 10.6 tools on Apple support downloads:
    Mac OS X Server v10.6
    To administer Mac OS X Server v10.6, use the Server Admin Tools 10.6 on Mac OS X v10.6. You should match the version numbers of the server, tools, and admin workstation as closely as possible; for example, use Server Admin Tools version 10.6.8 on Mac OS X v10.6.8 to administer Mac OS X Server v10.6.8.
    My questions are:
    1.  Where are the 10.6 tools on the apple support website?  A search turns up versions for everything BUT 10.6.
    2.  Will the 10.6 tools work on 10.6.8 that is not a server edition of Mac OS?

    The Server Tools you can download from Apple will install and run on OS X client, but they will only connect to and monitor OS X Server boxes.
    So that won't get you where you want.
    One command that will help you here - and which is present on OS X Server and OS X client - is dscl.
    dscl . list /users
    For details:
    info dscl
    or
    man dscl
    Or a web search, etc...

    Please help. Thanks.

    =====

    Make sure you don't have multiple Java Runtime versions enabled in the browser. In the browser go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced and ensure that only one Java is enabled (MS Java or Sun JRE).
    Having multiple jvm's enabled will surely cause wacky browser behavior.

  • Can only see User Management in Admin Tools

    I configured an LDAP realm and included the required admin group to access
    the Administration Tools. However, the only thing I can see in
    Administration Tools is User Management. Why is that?

    Wendy,
    Would it be possible for you to send us a file from your LDAP directory
    server? Please forward this information to the support case you have open.
    In the \iPlanet\Servers\slapd-yourhost\config directory.
    Send the dse.ldif file.
    Basically what we want to do is to compare the user and group dn values
    specified in the vlvBase lines with your config.xml. Also grab the
    string that starts with creatorsname ... look for something like
    creatorsName:
    uid=admin,ou=administrators,ou=topologymanagement,o=netscaperoot
    The principal value in the config.xml will be the creatorsName string.
    Set the principal string in config.xml should be something like
    Principal="uid=admin,ou=Administrators,ou=TopologyManagement,o=NetscapeRoot"
    unless your iPlanet schema has been changed.
    So, in the config.xml LDAPRealm definition explicitly set Group is context.
    GroupIsContext="false"
    Set the AuthProtocol to simple.
    Your config.xml LDAPRealm definition should have 13 fields and look
    something like:
    <LDAPRealm
    AuthProtocol="simple"
    Credential="password"
    GroupDN="o=beasys.com, ou=Groups"
    GroupIsContext="false"
    GroupNameAttribute="cn"
    GroupUsernameAttribute="uniquemember"
    LDAPURL="ldap://myhost.beasys.com:389"
    Name="myLdapRealmV1"
    Principal="uid=admin,ou=Administrators,ou=TopologyManagement,o=NetscapeRoot"
    SSLEnable="false"
    UserAuthentication="bind"
    UserDN="o=beasys.com, ou=People"
    UserNameAttribute="uid"/>

    Can you also supply the vendor and version number of your directory

    Where did you find the syntax for those strings? Is that particular
    string syntax documented somewhere on the LDAP vendors site?

    Wendy,
    You may be seeing CR081150, which is a bug report regarding the
    removal
    of
    ebusiness.jar
    from your application. If you remove this JAR, the admin tool
    fails
    to
    load certain
    EJBs which cause it to only display more than the user tool. The
    workaround is
    to put ebusiness.jar back into your applicaiton. If this is
    unacceptable,
    contact
    Support and they will work with you.

  • Obiee admin tool with Windows 8

    Hi,
    is there way to run obiee client admin tool under windows 8?
    thanks

    This installation will be logged here : \Program Files\Oracle\Inventory\logs\ check if its error'ing out or trace files will be helping.
    No GUI when you running the runinstaller.exe and admin and compatible mode ? BTW What is your OS, Java and System config's
    Also read through : http://techforum4u.com/entry.php/3498-Solution-For-quot-OBIEE-11-1-1-6-Installation-Fails-or-Hangs-At-Configuration-Progress-Step-quot
    I have not installed or tried installing on Windows 8 so i would say may be installing a oracle vm with downgraded os version of windows 7/below and run the OBI client installation or wait until Oracle releases a supported installer version.

  • Send an alert when Server Admin Tool has logged in?

    Is there a way to determine if someone remotely logged in via "Server Admin.app"? The application has no own log file.
    I've managed to setup a launchd task that sends an email whenever someone establishes a vpn connection by watching the pppd log file. Can this also be done for that servermgrd process?

    The basic idea was to watch the log file of the vpnd daemon and fire a shell script that sends a mail to me, if the most recent line of the log file contains the word "progress". (That word is a unique indicator for a successful connection. Otherwise you will get mails for each status change, too.)
    To watch a file change i used Lingon: I logged in via Remote Desktop, launched "Lingon" (freeware - http://sourceforge.net/projects/lingon/) and created a user daemon named "com.myserver.vpnd_watch". Then i've chosen my shell script as the application to be called. In my case it was "/usr/sbin/vpnd_watch.sh". And finally i set the only option "Run it if this file is modified:" as "/var/log/ppp/vpnd.log".
    The shell script is quiet simple. To prevent multiple alerts for the same event, it reads a file that contains the date & time of the last login/alert, reads out the date & time of the most recent log file entry containing the word "progress" and compares both. In case of being different, it sends a mail with the log file entries of the last three connections via email and creates a new date file.
    #!/bin/bash
    *date_old=$(cat /Users/myaccount/watch_date.txt)*
    *date_new=$(cat /var/log/ppp/vpnd.log | grep progress | tail -n1 | grep -o -E "[a-zA-Z]{3} [0-9]{2} [0-9]{2}:[0-9]{2}:[0-9]{2}")*
    *if [ "$date_old" != "$date_new" ]; then*
    *cat /var/log/ppp/vpnd.log | grep progress | tail -n3 | mail -s "VPN Connection" [email protected]*
    *echo $date_new > /Users/myaccount/watch_date.txt*
    fi
    *exit 0*
    (You might have to set permissions accordingly.) The log file entry which matters is something like:
    Fri Nov 19 22:23:43 2010 : L2TP incoming call in progress from 'xxx.xxx.xx.xx'...
    This is also the message text of the email, so you can see what the connecting client's IP address is. My mobile phone provider offers a mail to SMS service. So i get an SMS on my iPhone, too. Useful when i don't have an internet connection or no time to check mails.
    Binding all administrative traffic to that vpn connection (ssh, ARD and Server Admin Tools) makes sure that you're always informed if some tries to take control and by the IP address if it's your client.

  • Admin Tools Over Internet

    Is there a way to use the server admin tools to manage a server over the internet when i am not connected to my local network. I use server admin tools while i am on my network, but if i am away i would like to still be able to manage the server. If so what ports do i need to open up to allow this remote connection?

    No problem. To set up an ssh tunnel from a shell, you need to execute ssh like this:
    ssh [email protected] -L 5901:127.0.0.1:5900
    That will tunnel port 5901 on your local host to port 5900 on the remote host through an ssh connection. Once you're logged in (as with a normal ssh connection), you need to start up the vnc server (I don't leave mine running all the time). With OSXvnc installed, this command sets it up in a relatively safe way:
    sudo /Applications/OSXvnc.app/Contents/MacOS/OSXvnc-server -dontdisconnect -swapButtons -nevershared -localhost
    The sudo is not necessary if you are already logged in to the GUI on the remote machine, but otherwise you need root permission to start the VNC service. The -nevershared and -localhost options keep others out of the VNC, and the other options "fix" the mouse inputs and prevent timeout. I've got an alias in my shell configuration for this command, as well as the ssh tunnels.
    That done, open up any VNC client on your local machine (I use chicken of the vnc), and connect to the port you mapped to 5900 on the remote machine. If your client is talking about "Display 0", that's 5900. Display 1 is 5901, and so on. Both can be 5900, but I used 5901 in the example to show which port was remote and which was local.
    If this doesn't do it for you, let me know.

    After having Altered attributes from Objects, duplicates appeard in HTML gui admin.
    I know that when I alter Object from Terminal I've to disconnect and reconnect in order to be able to run a describe to see the changes made.

    What is the meaning of those duplicates stuffs ?
