Simple PC to PC network question

I am trying to get some general information for an upcoming deployment.
Scenario - 2 PC's on the same subnet/VLAN connected to a Cisco catalyst L3 switch. Switch is connected to a router.
PC 1 talks to PC 2.
Does the traffic for PC2 go beyond the switch? Meaning, for example, does the MAC of PC 1 and 2  get put in the routers ARP table as well as the downstream switch?

Thanks Reza - told you it was simple :) One more simple question regarding Wake on Lan. We'll use the same scenario as my original post. My basic understanding of a WOL failure is this:
If PC1 sends a magic packet to PC 2, which has been in a powered down state for longer than the switches ARP table holds entries, the switch will drop the packet, since it would not get its ARP response, and would not wake up. Correct?
If so, are you aware of anything other than static ARP or a DHCP reservation, perhaps some logic on the NIC side of PC 2, that is capable of keeping it ARP entry alive on the switch?

    Ok well its more then just one networking question...
    I'm working on a game engine (2d) and for the time being it just has two blocks in a 600 by 480 area, both controled by user input on a single comp. I would like to change this so that i can have the blocks be controled by sepeart computers. I know this is possible I just dont know how, any help would be great.
    My experience with Java is some what limited i've only been programing for the past 6 months and i've never messed with any network code before.

    What you probably want to do is open a "socket" between one computer and the other. (TCP is probably the easiest/best for your application, as opposed to UDP). This is actually pretty simple, and basically consists of:
    (this client/server arrangement is the easiest. Peer-to-peer would work too, but is generally more complex.)
    1. Computer A decides to become the server and opens a java.net.ServerSocket on port 1234.
    2. Computer B opens a java.net.Socket to computer A's port 1234.
    3. Computer A accepts the connection and gets a java.net.Socket from the ServerSocket.
    4. Now anything computer A writes to the Socket is recieved by computer B, and vice-versa. This is a TCP connection and is stream-based, so it should be familiar if you've done any Java I/O before; in face, you can use java.io.Reader's and Writers, and so on with your Socket.

  • Share files in ibook - networking question

    Hello, I have a networking question.
    I have a brand spakin' new 13' MacBook Pro and an older 14' iBook G4 (with a broken airport wireless card).
    My internet is set up so that I have the modem connected to a "wired" ethernet hub, then to an airport express. This way I have wireless for my new MacBook Pro, and I can connect my old iBook to the internet with a ethernet cable.
    Herein lies my question: I want to access all my files on my ibook from my MacBook Pro. I've tried the file sharing and etc on system preferences, but for some reason it still doesn't work. I believe its because they are on different networks? (one wireless, one wired?)
    Any ideas to make my ibook a simple file server.

    Try repairing disk permissions.

    Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
    Also, your profile indicates you are running 10.4.3. If that is the case, you might want to run Software Updates (from the Apple Menu , then click Software Updates.

  • Very simple network question

    Forgive my stupidity asking this question...
    I have an iBook G4 and two Windows PCs (one W2K, one XP) all happily sharing a wi-fi network using Airport Express.
    I am about to dash out to the shops to buy a USB printer so that we can all print wirelessly, using iFelix's fab website for guidance. My incredibly dumb question is this: do I need to establish any kind of network before embarking on the printer-sharing project, or, by the very fact that we are all sharing a wi-fi network, are we already three "networked" computers??
    I don't want to share any files between the computers, just a printer. Is there anything I need to do beforehand to create a network, or are we already one??

    Sanhodo: there are reports of problems with windows sharing a printer to a wireless iBook. You should read iFelix guide to wireless printing (run a google search), it will shed some light on the subject.
    JFYI, the setup of Claudine is completely different from yours, since she will connect the printer to THE ROUTER, not to a computer --which is your case-- and therefore she will avoid the problems of windows printer sharing...

  • Simple Home Networking Question

    Hi, I've got a dumb question.
    I have an iMac with airport extreme and am going to purchase an iBook with airport extreme and want to buy a base station or router to use my internet connection wirelessly as well as share between the two machines.
    The question is, do I need to make the base station or router connected to one of the computers at all times? Can I have the base station sitting somewhere and then connect both machines to it wirelessly? Or does on machine have to serve the base station?

    That is all subjective. Non Apple routers are typically configured using any web browser. The Apple base stations all require the use of special Apple software.
    Of the basic Airport base station, Airport Express, and Airport Extreme, which one is best if all I want to do is make my iBook wireless?
    All of them are equally well at creating a wireless network.
    If you have any devices which need to connect via Ethernet, you do not want the AirPort Express (AX).
    Currently Apple is only selling the square 802.11b/g/n AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) and the 802.11b/g AX.
    The older round 802.11b/g AEBS and the AX have a USB port which supports a single compatible USB printer.
    The new square 802.11b/g/n AEBS has a USB port which supports multiple USB hard drives and USB printers.

  • Networking question between two ibooks...simple answer I'm sure (doh!)

    I have an older ibook, clamshell, with OS 10.1 installed (no firewire). I also have a newer ibook (14" white) with OS 10.4.7. I want to transfer files from the clamshell to the newer ibook. I understand that I use a crossover ethernet cable to set up a local network. What I want to arrive at is seeing the hard drive icon on the newer ibook desktop and be able to drag and drop from there, but I'm confused about how to get to that point, having read about Public folder (not what I'm shooting for). In the past, I've had a kind tech support help, but unfortunately didn't take notes on getting the hard disc icon onto the [client?] computer desktop.

    It sounds like you are trying to connect to the
    machine from which you are connecting. If all is
    well, and both machines have sharing turned on, you
    should see 2 machines in the local network browser.
    One will be the one you are on, the other should be
    the remote machine.
    Assuming the local network browser is the window that comes up when I hit command K, I see no list. Both windows (Server Address, and Favortie Servers) are blank.
    Make sure you have sharing turned on, on the remote
    machine.

    I did this, yes. Rebooted both computers and the new names came up in the Sharing window).
    All i can figure is that perhaps the ethernet cord is either funky, or not what I am perceiving as crossover. I may try a couple of other cords I have as well. I saw the mention of IP addresses, but doesn't this only have to do with sharing via the internet?
    I like to give the machines IP addresses (e.g.
    192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.20), so that I can "ping"
    one machine from the other machine, to be sure I've
    got connectivity, before I damage the wall with my
    head.

  • Probably a simple networking question (newbie here)

    Hi everyone,
    When I installed Solaris 10 inside of a VMWare Workstation vm, I got to the portion of the network configuration where it asked about LDAP or DNS or NFS, and I chose "None" because my setup is not a member of a domain. Now, when I go online, I have no Internet connection.
    I have the interface listed in ifconfig -a and it has an IP address of 192.168.0.4 issued by DHCP. Everything is right, except there is no Default Gateway listed, nor does it have my DNS servers listed.
    How would I go about setting these in Solaris? I'm not entirely familiar with vi or edit, so a step-by-step will be nice.
    I should note, that I'm able to access my Windows Workgroup computer (the physical host) and copy files from it. I just don't have any Internet access. Also, the IP for my physical computer (the Windows share) is my DNS IP, although that shouldn't matter.

    First of all, in /etc/hosts file ;
    the first line indicates loopback address(IP) & the second line indicates the IP of the your machine followed by the hostname ( which is "unknown in your case as you have not assigned any hostname). The commented line in second line tells that , the IP is assigned by a dhcp-server.
    you can assign router IP in a file called "/etc/defaultrouter".you only have to give the IP address of the router in this file.To make this as default router address for you system , you have reboot the system.
    You can change your hostname from "unknown" by issuing this command :
    #setuname -n XYZ
    (where XYZ is the new hostname)
    you can also check the changed hostname by doing this ;
    #uname -n

    I need help logging into my ethernet hub wired G4 Tower from a wireless Powerbook. Here is the setup - Cable modem goes into wireless router --> pushes internet signal throught the house for a Dell notebook and my Powerbook --> ethernet goes out of wireless router to a 4 port hub that powers a printer and my G4 Tower. I would like to access files on the hardwired Tower remotely from my Powerbook. Can this be set up in file sharing or what type of configuration is necessary to make this work? Also... I have a printer downstairs (I would like to print to from all 3 CPU's) what's needed to make this happen.

  • Network Questions on 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster

    I am going through the setup and configuration of a clustered Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V host. 
    I’ve followed as much documentation as I can find, and the Cluster Validation is passing with flying colors, but I have three questions about the networking setup.
    Here’s an overview as well as a diagram of our configuration:
    We are running two Server 2012 R2 nodes on a Dell VRTX Blade Chassis. 
    We have 4-dual port 10 GBe Intel NICS installed in the VRTX Chassis. 
    We have two Netgear 12-Port 10 GBe switches, both uplinked to our network backbone switch.
    Here’s what I’ve done on each 2012 R2 node:
    -Created a NIC team using two 10GBe ports from separate physical cards in the blade chassis.
    -Created a Virtual Switch using this team called “Cluster Switch” with “ManagementOS” specified.
    -Created 3 virtual Nics that connect to this “Cluster Switch”: 
    Mangement (10.1.10.x), Cluster (172.16.1.x), Live Migration (172.16.2.x)
    -Set up VLAN ID 200 on the Cluster NIC using Powershell.
    -Set Bandwidth Weight on each of the 3 NICS.  Mangement has 5, Cluster has 40, Live Migration has 20.
    -Set a Default Minimum Bandwidth for the switch at 35 (for the VM traffic.)
    -Created two virtual switches for iSCSI both with 
    “-AllowManagementOS $false” specified.
    -Each of these switches is using a 10GBe port from separate physical cards in the blade chassis.
    -Created a virtual NIC for each of the virtual switches: 
    ISCSI1 (172.16.3.x) and ISCSI2 (172.16.4.x)
    Here’s what I’ve done on the Netgear 10GB switches:
    -Created a LAG using two ports on each switch to connect them together.
    -Currently, I have no traffic going across the LAG as I’m not sure how I should configure it.
    -Spread out the network connections over each Netgear switch so traffic from the virtual switch “Cluster Switch” on each node is connected to both Netgear 10 GB switches.
    -Connected each virtual iSCSI switch from each node to its own port on each Netgear switch.
    First Question:  As I mentioned, the cluster validation wizard thinks everything is great. 
    But what about the traffic the Host and Guest VMs use to communicate with the rest of the corporate network? 
    That traffic is on the same subnet as the Management NIC. 
    Should the Management traffic be on that same corporate subnet, or should it be on its own subnet? 
    If Management is on its own subnet, then how do I manage the cluster from the corporate network? 
    I feel like I’m missing something simple here.
    Second Question:  Do I even need to implement VLANS in this configuration? 
    Since everything is on its own subnet, I don’t see the need.
    Third Question:  I’m confused how the LAG will work between the two 10 Gbe switches when both have separate uplinks to the backbone switch. 
    I see diagrams that show this setup, but I’m not sure how to achieve it without causing a loop.

    This is an operational question, not a technical question.  You can have all VM and management traffic on the same network if you want.  If you want to isolate the two, you can do that, too.  Generally, recommended
    practice is to create separate networks for host management and VM access, but it is not a strict requirement.

    No, you don't need VLANs if separation by IP subnet is sufficient.  VLANs provide a level of security against snooping that simple subnet isolation provides.  Again, up to you as to how you want to configure things. 
    I've done it both ways, and it works both ways.

    This is pretty much outside the bounds of a clustering question.  You might want to take network configuration questions to a networking forum.  Or, you may want to talk with Netgear specialist.  Different networking
    vendors can accomplish this in different ways.

  • Some very "newbie" networking questions -- trying to get started

    Hello all. Since this forum is so friendly for issues related to Arch, I thought I'd post my semi-arch related question.
    I'm trying to create a network for my house, consisting of about 3 computers. I have a book reference, TCP/IP Network Administration from O'reilly, but I think I need a bit of a "kick-start" in order to get to a level in which I can comfortably understand the book (if that makes sense).
    I've got internet access working by connecting to a router and having everything configured by DHCP (ie, in rc.conf, eth0="dhcp"). What's bothering me (and I don't even know if it should) is that the other computers on the physical network are not visible to me.
    IE, when I try to connect to them with their host name, it doesn't recognise them. My understanding of that is that either I need to manually set the hostnames of the other computers on the network in /etc/hosts, or use something like a DNS server on one of the computers in the network in order to recognize the others.
    My other doubt is that I think I've got a dynamic IP address (though it might be static, I'm not quite sure). Does that change things?
    I don't expect you guys to completely run through me setting up the network (that's what the book is for!) but some basic advice on either my misconceptions (I'm sure I have plenty) or related in general to my situation would be awsome and highly appreciated. I'd also be happy to provide any additional info that would be helpful.

    Aha! So, for example, the network 192.168.0.0 where mask is 255.255.255.0 is a private network set up by my router, right?
    So the addresses in 192.168.0.0 never change, but the public IP address of the hosts do change?
    Does that mean that if, for example, I have a host called 192.168.0.32 that its address never changes? Can I simply add that to all the other hosts' /etc/hosts file and it won't change?
    All I was ever concerned about was allowing hosts in the network to contact each other via hostname. If that never changes then I'm all set.

  • AirPort Express/D-Link Network Question

    Hi,
    Right now my set-up is as follows:
    - DSL modem connected to old AirPort Snow
    - Airport Snow connected to Ethernet switch, which is connected to desktop computer, and, via Ethernet cable, to AirPort Express on another floor
    - Both AirPorts are configured to use the same network name with the same password. That way, I can roam with my MacBooks from one AirPort to another and the MacBooks won't have to log on to two separate networks.
    At any rate, someone gave me a brand new D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N router. I want to use this instead of the aging AirPort Snow for speed and coverage improvements. So my question is: can I set up a network essentially substituting the D-Link for the AirPort Snow, and having the D-Link and Airport Express configured with the same network name and password, as it is now?

    But if you're as curious, as I was, here's some more info I came across. I thought naively that a simple wireless 'repeater' would be straightforward and would work across different vendors of wireless basestations.
    Maybe it would? But the Airport Express implements something called a
    b Wireless Distribution System
    b (WDS),
    which sounds to me more complicated than just a simple wireless repeater. Maybe it has something to do with also honouring the encryption in the wireless signal to be repeated, err extended? Apparently WDS implementations are not standardized and currently
    b rarely
    work across different brands of wireless basestations.
    Although apparently several folks have been successful extending the range of
    b linksys
    brand wireless basestations using an Airport Express,
    b IF
    they first update (swap out?) the linksys firmware with another (open source) version. Whew!
    Anyhooow, for your situation, a brute-force option might be to replace the Ethernet cord between the Rogers cable modem and the D-LINK with a longer cable, so you can move the D-LINK closer to Living Room. (Or possibly get a longer CATV cable and move both the cable modem and D-LINK). You could even try increasing the range of the PowerBook with one of those Quickertek antennas.
    But I expect it would be
    b cheaper and easier,
    if it came to that, to just replace the D-LINK with a 2nd Airport Express, which would then inter-work with the Airport Express in the Living room, using
    b WDS.

  • Time Capsule Network question,

    Hi there,
    I just wanted to try and get a better overview of what's happening with my TC.
    I have a 2010 bought TC,
    I live in a relatively small apartment so range and signal is not an issue,
    When I first got it I set it up as automatic G and N compatibility, I thought that meant all N clients went on 5GHZ and everything else went 2.4GHZ,
    What I realised then was that what was actually happening was that ALL clients were jumping on the 2.4GHZ network with the N clients connecting at about 144Mbps and the G clients at 54Mbps, I was really suprised at this behaviour and even MORE suprised to find out that if I manually ran a 5GHZ wide band network simultaneously with a slightly different SSID ie (Airport 2.4ghz, Airport 5ghz) that N clients would connect at 300Mbps on the 5GHZ network and G at 54Mpbs on the 2.4GHZ network, I can't find anywhere this is explained! and all of the websites that tell you how to set up time capsule never mention that you will get twice the performane with a seperate 5ghz band running. I can't see the downside to this and think it should be default behaviour? All clients can still communicate with each other regardless of which band they connect to.
    I then tried to set up the guest network just out of interest and could see that my TC was now broadcasting 3 SSIDS! One for the 2.4ghz one for the 5ghz and one for the guest network.
    So what frequency is this guest network broadcast in this configuration? Also is it possible to broadcast 4 SSIDS? One each for 2.4 and 5 ghz on the standard network and a 2.4 and 5 on the guest??
    Also what are you thoughts regarding my original point of having to set up the 5ghz manually to get clients to connect at over 144Mbps?

    I can't see the downside to this and think it should be default behaviour?
    Remember that Apple always tends to try to make things simple. It's much easier to tell a typical user that his computer will connect to the best available signal and leave it at that. Probably 90% of users don't even understand what dual band is.
    You have a small apartment so signal strength is not an issue. But, it's a fact that 5 GHz signals are not nearly as strong as 2.4 GHz signals. After all, you can't get something for nothing. In the case of 5 GHz, you gain speed, but give up distance capability and penetration power.
    In a larger home, if the default were to have a separate name for the 5 GHz network, a lot of users would not be able to connect using 5 GHz if the signal has to pass through multiple walls or a ceiling and a few walls. Even if they might get the 5 GHz signal, it will be much weaker. They will have a better, stronger and more reliable connection at 2.4 GHz in this case. Isn't that what they want?
    The default setting of the AirPort is to let computers connect to the "best" available signal quality. True, the "best" quality signal may not be the "fastest" signal in some cases. Still, for most users, having one network name for both bands makes a lot of sense.
    Users who are interested in advanced features and setup have an excellent resource in the Apple AirPort Networks Guide. It's right there on the main forum page for all to see. Did you not see this?
    So what frequency is this guest network broadcast in this configuration?
    The Guest network is dual band as well. You can't assign a separate name to the 5 GHz band on the Guest network. Both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands use the same network name or SSID.
    Also is it possible to broadcast 4 SSIDS?
    No, 3 would be the maximum.

    As a regular member of the forum assisting dozens of users each week, I've stated my opinion above. I dislike trying to generalize, but Apple made the right decision for most users with the present default settings. As I said, we spend a good deal of time just trying to explain what +dual band+ is.
    You appear to be an advanced user interested in advanced features and settings on the router. That's good. We could use some more help on the forums, so please check the forum pages often and help us out when you see a question from a user asking about the more advanced features of the router.

  • 15454 Multishelf Networking Question

    I have a concern with the way a vendor setup the network for our two 15454's.  Unfortunately this vendor is acting like a car dealer and doesn't want to answer/respond to our questions about the setup.  Below is my concern/question that I sent to our vendor to no avail and hoping someone on here can help out.  I have also attached a simple diagram of the physical setup:

    I have put a diagram together of the current physical setup and it shows the Travis ONS is going from its Slot 11 to Switch 2 Port 0/2 (VLAN2) and Slot 7 is going to Switch 1 port 0/2 (VLAN2).  Both ports which are on VLAN 2.  Then you have the Main ONS Slot 7 going to Switch 1 port 0/1(VLAN1) and Slot 11 going to Switch 2 port 0/1(VLAN1) which is a trunking port with no native VLAN set so it defaults to VLAN1.  Not sure why this port is setup to trunk unless it was meant to be used to connect to our network and the Slot 11 and 7 of the Main ONS was supposed to plug into another port.
    So right now I see that the Main ONS is only talking on VLAN 1 and the Travis ONS is only talking on VLAN 2.  Is this how it should be setup?  Also, does there have to be multiple VLANS as of now I don't see why we would need to have two VLANs setup.  We normally use VLAN 2 for management purposes and would like to continue to do that.  And we have heard talk of a heartbeat between the two ONS.  What VLAN/Port is the heartbeat taking place on if there is actually one occurring?

    Depending on what version of software you are running and if you are only using the 15454 M12 chassis (17 slot) and not the M2 or M6 Chassis, you can select which VLANs to use when you configure the MSTP shelf for mult-shelf.

    Step 1 Complete the "DLP-G46 Log into CTC" task on page 3-30 at the node that you want to configure as a multishelf node.
    Step 2 If you want to set up the login node as the node controller, complete the following steps. If not, continue with Step 3.
    a. In node view (single-node mode) or multishelf view (multishelf mode), click the Provisioning > General > Multishelf Config tabs.
    b. Click Enable as Node Controller.
    c. From the LAN Config drop-down list, complete one of the following:
    •Choose Ethernet Switch if MS-ISC-100T cards or the Catalyst 2950 or the Catalyst 3560 switches are already installed and configured. Choose the public VLAN ID and private VLAN ID for the ONS 15454 multishelf node. In case of an ONS 15454 M6, the public VLAN ID and private VLAN ID are static (1 and 2 respectively).
    Note Public VLAN ID is used by the node controller to communicate with the external network. Private VLAN ID is used by the node controller to communicate with the subtending shelves.
    The default is VLAN IDs 1 & 2 and it is assumed that you are using dedicated switches for the Multi-shelf configuration.  If you are using the switches for other purposes, then it is assumed that you are not using VLANs 1 or 2.
    If you are not using the M2 or M6 chassis, you should be able to go back and reprovision your multi-shelf configuration in CTC to use different VLANs, and of course make the corresponding changes on your switches as well.

  • Losing connection to network question

    hello,
    i have a pretty simple home network: dsl line/modem, linksys router, 2 mac laptops, 1 windows desktop. my dsl only gives me up to 1.5mbps download speed which can easily be "maxed out" by watching youtube on one computer while maybe doing a download on another. i have noticed often during this situation i will lose connection to my network and it will return after a few minutes. so my question is does this make sense about getting disconnecting when maxing out and is there a solution?

    Yes. 2 mac laptops, 1 windows desktop. With 3 computers accessing the network at the same time with only 1.5mbps, that will defintily slow your connection down and cause disruption in your service.
    Limitation... you would have to discuss that with your ISP.
