Simple quesiton on JTextArea, scroll bar

HI, all java programmers, i think my question is simple...pls help ...
I use the following coding to add a scrollable textarea to my JPanel , panelSouth.
details = new JTextArea();
JScrollPane scrollPane = new JScrollPane(details,JScrollPane.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR_AS_NEEDED,JScrollPane.HORIZONTAL_SCROLLBAR_AS_NEEDED);
panelSouth.add( scrollPane, BorderLayout.CENTER );
i wanna to append text to the text area.
i use details.append("my text");
however, any method can scrol down the text area? so that my new text can be
shown automatically when a new text was added?
the scrol bar won't scroll down when i add text.
if i add a large amount of text.. user
need to scrol down to see the newest text..
and also, user , may not know some new text was added...
thx all experts...
yours,
terry

details.setCaretPosition(details.getText().length());

         public Example(){
              build();
        public void build(){
              // The code that should be of interest to you.

              JTextArea t = new JTextArea();
              scroll.getViewport().add(t);
              this.getContentPane().add(scroll);
              this.setSize(200,200);

  • JTextArea w/Scroll bar wont scroll AND code drops through if statements

    Hi, I'm still having trouble with the text area in the following code. When you run the code, you get the top arrow on the scroll bar, but the bottom is cut off. Also, a big problem is that no matter what choice is selected from the combo box, the code drops through to the last available value each time. Someone on the forums suggested using an array list for the values in the combo box, but I have not been able to figure out how to do that. A quick example would be apprciated.
    Thank you in advance for any help

    if (TermAndRate.getSelectedItem() == "7 years at 5.35%") ;
    Term = 7;
    IntRate = 5.35;
    you would be better off setting up arrays
    int[] term = {7,15,30};
    double[] rate = {5.35,5.50,5.75};
    then using getSelectedIndex()
    int loan = TermAndRate.getSelectedIndex()
    Term = term[loan];
    IntRate = rate[loan];

  • Really simple question, stop function and scroll bar won't work

    I was working on different parts of this VI separately, when I put them together the scroll bar and stop button stopped working.
    In the individual VI both are in the while loop. In the final one I was one scroll bar and one stop button to apply to all 5 while loops.
    I tried taking the scroll bar in and out of the first loop to attach it to the rest but it still won't work.
    I'm sure that there is a really stupid simple answer but I've been playing with it for a while.
    I attached the VI that I am working on as well at fake data (to test the color boxes).
    Thanks!

    You have a typical beginner problem due to incorrect understanding of dataflow. Run the code using execution highlighting and watch the diagram to see.
    Your stop button is outside any loop and thus will only be read by the code exactly once at the start of the program.
    Your scroll bar is read in the first loop. All other loops cannot start until the first loop has completed and since (1) is true, it will never happen if the boolean is false when the code starts.
    Why do you have so much duplicate code? 95% of the loop code is the same and can be re-used. I am sure the entire thing could be written using 5% of the total code. Put everything in one loop, the iterate over the 2D array to get all the values. Don't forget to place a small wait inside the while loop.

  • I would like to know it it's possible to change the scroll bar from the right part of the firefox browser, to the left part and, if it's possible, how can it be done. Thank you!

    The scroll bar (the one used to scroll up and down any kind of website), that is normally in the right part of the firefox browser, would be of much help to me if it could sometimes be moved to the left part of the browser. Is this possible? How can it be done? Can anybody tell me the exact steps to take in order to do this (if it is possible of course)? This would be helpfull to me, since I think that the firefox scroll bar is overlaping the scroll part of the facebook chat sidebar, since I just can see a few people on this facebook chat sidebar and I can´t scroll along it, as I could a while ago. So my guess is that the firefox scroll bar is covering the other. In order to solve it in a simpler way, I guessed that if the firefox scroll bar could be moved to the left side of the browser, this problem could be solved. So, can anybody help me?

    Type '''about:config''' in Location (address) bar
    filter for '''layout.scrollbar.side'''
    Right-click the Preference and Modify it to '''3'''
    You may need to reload any pages open to have scrollbar move to left after Preference change.

  • Question on vertical scroll bars in JScroll Pane

    Hi,
    I managed to display my chat program with a vertical scroll bars by using JScrollPane. Every time some on types a line, this is appended to whatever was previously in the JTextArea (the JScrollPane has a JTextArea in it). Even though this works fine, when the dimension of the JTextArea is full with text, one has to scroll down to see what was the last line of text that was typed.
    Is there a way to make the verticall scroll area alwas scrolled down (I mean, scrolled to the bottom so I can see new incoming text without manually having to scroll it down?)
    Thanks!
    Cecilia.

    You might try adding a properties listener to the JTextArea listening for a "resize/size" property change and when it does, force the scroll bar to go to max.

  • Image Gallery & Scroll Bar

    Just exploring flash as a beginner, still.
    I've come across this website:
    http://www.jeremiahshoaf.com/
    I'm a fan of the scrolling portfolio idea the designer has used in the centre of the website's front page.
    Any ideas how this is produced?
    My presumption would be a MovieClip with images various other MovieClips inside (holding images etc) and then a scrollbar controlling how far across the screen the images are shown with actionscript?
    Knowing me I'm wrong, but any ideas would help me out to explore and learn further.
    Thanks for your great advice, as always.
    .. Also, I wondered if this could be produced, and as well as the scrollbar, the ability to add scrolling with the keyboard, left and right keys? Again, only a presumption, but I was thinking this might be simple with actionscript? Simply a piece of code to tell the scrollbar to move to the next MovieClip, if my initial presumption was correct.
    The above is only a small side note for those who feel they can assist - but thanks again for any help you can provide!
    This forum has been a huge help to me, in learning Flash so far.
    Thanks a lot.

    Well first you need a really long MovieClip with some graphics inside on it. That should be simple enough to do. Then you need a scrollbar. Just a rectangle should do for now. On this MovieClip give it a MOUSE_DOWN event listener and on that event use the "startDrag" function to add dragging functionality. Add a MOUSE_UP event listener to the stage and when that happens call "stopDrag" on the scroll bar clip. Then you can have an ENTER_FRAME event that actually updates the scrolling. On this event, check the scrollbar's x position and do some math to figure out the percentage you have scrolled. It might look like this:
    var percent:Number = scrollbar.x / (stage.width - scrollbar.width);
    Then update the main image container by the percent:
    var minPosition:Number = -500;
    bigImage.x = percent * minPosition;
    Hopefully that should be enough info to get you started.

    Is there a simple way to create a scrollable text article in Indesign 5.5? It will later be exported to a SWF as a mini-flash web portfolio.

    Do you mean a text box people can type in (for a Web form
    entry) or one for displaying your content?
    If the first, then you use the textarea tag and scrollbars
    appear when the user types more lines that you specify. See the
    textarea
    description at W3Schools.
    If the second, then that's usually done in Flash, but can be
    done with CSS. See these two pages:

  • Vertical/Horizontal Scroll Bars in Numbers 3.0

    Just upgraded from Numbers 2.0.1 today.  I have a few simple spreadsheets that were converted to 3.0 that now have horizontal and vertical scroll bars that take the page WAY past where the sheet data is.  In fact, when I create a blank document, the scroll bars at the bottom and right also want to extend far past the black sheet template data.
    Simply put, how do I make these disappear?  In the past I just dragged the right bottom corner of the window and they disappeared as it auto detected that the page data stopped at the last cell.
    I realize this question is sorta ridiculous, but my OCD has me going nuts because I can't fix this

    bump, anyone?
    Another issue with this is that after I close the document, it doesn't save the format of the spreadsheet (wide like a 16x9 HDTV / landscape).  It looks like it wants to make it a portrait shaped every time the file is opened.  Is there no way to save the format?

  • Horizontal scroll bar on JTextPane

    Hey everyone! I need to know how I can add a horizontal scroll bar to a jTextPane. I can NOT use a jTextArea though because I need to be using a StyledDocument. Right now, when I add it to a jScrollPane, it only scrolls vertically, but it wordwraps. Thanks for reading!

    Override getScrollableTracksViewportHeight() method to return false and at the same time, override setSize() method to adjust size of text pane. Following example shows this:
    import java.awt.Dimension;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    import javax.swing.JScrollPane;
    import javax.swing.JTextPane;

            JFrame frame = new JFrame("NoWrapTextPaneTest");
            frame.setSize(new Dimension(300, 400));
            //frame.setResizable(false);
            frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            this.editor = new JTextPane() {

                public boolean getScrollableTracksViewportWidth() {
                    return false;
                @Override
                public void setSize(Dimension d) {
                    Dimension pSize = getParent().getSize();
                    if (d.width < pSize.width) {
                        super.setSize(pSize.width, d.height);
                    } else {
                        super.setSize(d);
            frame.getContentPane().add(new JScrollPane(editor,
                    JScrollPane.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR_ALWAYS,
                    JScrollPane.HORIZONTAL_SCROLLBAR_AS_NEEDED));
            frame.setVisible(true);
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            NoWrapTextPaneTest textPaneTest = new NoWrapTextPaneTest();
    } Thanks,

  • Horizontal scroll bar to a shuttle

    How can I display a horizontal scroll bar in a shuttle? I'm hoping it's as simple as adding an attribute to the form element attribute box.
    Regards.

    Hi,
    AFAIK its not possible to add horizontal scroll bar to shuttle/select list. You need to use workaround...or try jQuery..

  • Missing scroll bar in browser

    Hi, I got a very simple flex app which has a height that is bigger than the default height of the web browser. When it was run in a browser (had been maximized and both IE and FF had the same problem), sadly there was no scroll bar and thereby the bottom part of the flex app was covered and unviewable. Please help.

    Thanks for pointing me to the container file, when I changed the following
    <style>
    body { margin: 0px; overflow:hidden }
    </style>
    <body scroll="no">
    <iframe name="_history" src="history.htm" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" width="22" height="0"></iframe>
    generated by the flex builder to
    <style>
    body { margin: 0px; overflow:visible }
    </style>
    <body scroll="yes">
    <iframe name="_history" src="history.htm" frameborder="0" scrolling="yes" width="22" height="0"></iframe>
    The scroll bar appeared again in the browser so thanks for your help. Regards Isaac Fung
