Simple things seem hard to figure out

OK --- must admit I've not been a serious Logic user (mostly experienced with DP) but now that 9 has shown up and I'm trying MainStage again, I thought I'd try and use Logic for a new project to see if it's gotten any easier.
But I'm getting stuck on what I would consider to be very simple procedures.
For example, I have a region (actually three tracks worth but I don't think that matters). I split the region 4 bars from the end. Now I want to copy the left part of the region and insert it at that split point so that I have double what I had before at the beginning, followed by the original remaining 4 bars.
But when I paste a region, those remaining 4 bars don't get shifted. Instead (as far as I can tell because I can't see it), the pasted region seems to be overlayed with those 4 bars. How does one paste a region so that whatever is to the right of the insert position gets SHIFTED?
This should be trivial to figure out but I'm not seeing it.

And there was I trying to find a mechanism similar to standard copy/paste as found in almost every other application I've ever used....
I ended up creating a bunch of empty tracks, moving those last 4 bar regions into the new tracks, then copying/pasting the original regions and finally moving the other regions from the new tracks back to the end of the original tracks.
How can it be possible for such a simple workflow process to be so awkward? It's no wonder everyone is ******** about the lack of documentation, although I must admit that even when I searched through the online help I couldn't find a way to do this easily.

  • Entourage 2008 simple things I can't figure out

    I've just got Entourage 2008, an upgrade from the 2004 version and I cant figure out a few simple things. The first being, when I've got an 'identity'open, the old 2004 version used to say at the top of the window which identity that was and the 2008 version just says 'Inbox - Folders on My Computer' on whichever indentity I'm looking at and I have to look closer at the actual emails to know which mail address I'm looking at.
    Does that make sense?
    Anyone know how to fix it??

    Until you said it, I have never, ever noticed that! Being the only Entourage account on this Mac, I suppose I also never cared.
    Looking through the preferences and menu, I don't see a way to change it.

    Just my thoughts to add to the excellent answers above.
    • BRAND of DVD used - Matters when doing Video-DVDs
    Memorex, NoName etc cheap brands usually do NOT work
    I only Use Verbatim (more organic dye in these)
    • Type of DVD - matters
    - DVD+/RW - usually results in problems
    - DL-DVDs are more problematic than SL-DVDs
    - DVD+R are a more modern sort - BUT PLAYS BADLY or not at all on older DVD-players
    I only use DVD-R
    • BURN SPEED - matters
    - Best in iDVD app - IS NOT BEST at all but results in lot's of Burn Errors = Doesn't play well or at all
    I set this down to x2 or x4 max.

    Are you planning to have this table do any of the calculation, or is is to be used as the electronic equivalent of a sheet of paper with a grid printed on it—a place to record the data.
    For your seven column table:
    Are you using one or more rows at the top of the table to label the data below? If so, you might want this row (or these rows) to be set as Header Rows.
    Are you using the leftmost column to label the rows? If so, you may want this column to be a Header column.
    The default table supplied on the "Blank" templates contains one header row and one header column. If you need more (or fewer) Header rows or columns, select the table, then go Table (menu) > Header Rows > (choose the number you need). Repeat to set the number of Header Columns.
    To make a seven column table from the table supplied by default, click on any cell in column H (The eighth column), and drag right to add more cells to the selection, until you get to the last column of the table. With these cells selected, Go Table > Delete Columns.
    To make the remaining seven columns fit across a single page:
    Go View > Show Print View to show the table as it would appear when printed to paper.
    Select the table by clicking its icon in the Sheets List to the left (easy method), OR by carefully clicking on the outside boundary of the table itself (fiddley method).
    With the table selected, you will see square white handles at each corner and at the middle of each side (including the top and bottom).
    With the mouse, grab the handle in the middle of the right side of the table and drag right (or left) until the table just fits onto the width of the defined page.
    With the table still selected, set the thickness and colour of the cell boundaries using the Gaphics Inspector (as described by Jerry), or using the Stroke, Thickness and Color Well controls in the Format bar above the working portion of the Window.

  • I Can't Seem to Actually Figure Out How to Change my Podcast Feed :-S

    I'm reading the posts from Roger Wilmut1, and I have emailed Apple Support, but I just must be very dense, because I can't seem to figure out where to actually make the changes that I'm reading about. 
    A week ago, I received notice from BlipTV that my original, educational podcast (All About African Violets) apparently no longer complies with their terms of service.   I only have one week left for Blip to keep my existing feed open (but they disabled my account so I cannot upload any more episodes there).
    I have switched over to WordPress (where my website is hosted) to host my episodes, and I have nearly all of my episodes (50 so far) uploaded there.  I changed the feed in Feedburner to be correct for WordPress.  Then I tested it, and it worked.  Then, I attempted to try to add the new feed to iTunes.  I unsubcribed from my exiting podcast, and then attempted to resubscribe with the new feed.  Of course, it's not working.
    Apple support says I have to lose all my star ratings and reviews, and completely start over. Is that really true? 
    I'm feeling kinda foolish that I just can't seem to figure it out, but I am not a code writer.  I can see the full feed in Feedburner - is that where I make the changes I'm reading about?  I saw one about a new URL.  And, then do I still then have to submit the new feed?  Where do I do that?
    Sorry to seem to clueless, but this is very frustrating - I want to do it correctly.
    If there is someone who would be willing to walk me through this, I would be so grateful for the help.

    Roger - thank you so much for responding.  Originally - last year when I started my podcast, I submitted the BlipTV feed, and it's been working fine until they disabled my account.  Episodes 1-49 are there in the store, but Episode 50 (which is on WordPress) is not.
    On Feedburner, when I switched over to WordPress, I was instructed to change "Original Feed" to be as follows:  http://allaboutafricanviolets.com/feed/

    It also says that the Feed Title is:    All About African Violets

  • HARD Drive because it's Hard to figure out?!

    Greetings. I just hooked up a LaCie 500gb HD and am satisfied so far. I did find it difficult and will for sometime to figure out how to use it. My main point in this thread is that the difficulties were more than I thought they would be and wonder if others feel the same way? I consider myself just an average user so that may be part of the problem. For example in my case, there is a LaCie HD manual, a One Button Manual, a Retrospect Express Manual and I'm not sure if there are others but I hope not! I have emailed LaCie with a question (only way you can get support) and there is supposed to be a 1 day turnaround time for answers. So far its 2 days and no sign of a reply. Retrospect Support almost seems worse but I really havent got to that portion of the Manual yet! These are just small complaints but very frustrating and time consuming. Overall, I am happy with the LaCie but again I would welcome any comments on this. Cheers.

    I'm not sure what frustrations you are having... all you've said is that you have found the three user's guides, and e-mailed a question to support. Can you be any more specific?

  • Newbi question that is increasingly annoying to figure out....

    Hi, the only experience i had using Premier Pro was at uni to export videos, so i don't know what i'm doing here.
    All i want to do is bring in a bunch of images, and make them run all together for a set amount of time.
    I have 600 JPG images exported from Maya, and i have brought them into Premier to export as a video, but when i bring them in, each frame is way too long. Selecting all frames and the right clicking and going to speed/duration, and setting it down to 1 so it runs basically 0.1ms per frame (or so i thought it would do), obviously didnt work. It made each frame last for that amount of time, but with big gapes between each frame. I looked into how to remove this, and came to Ripple Delete. This only work 1 at a time though, and selecting all and right clicking and going to Delete Ripple near the top of the menu just randomly deletes ever frame leaving me with nothing?? This seems like such as simple thing to do but it is hard to figure out.
    I also tried changing the fps when starting up the project from 25fps to something higher, but it woudn't let me.
    Please help, it'd be greatly appreciated!!

  • Can't figure out how to send photos to outside lab

    Hello, I am new to Apple products and have had my iMac desktop for one week.   I am not very computer savy to start with and it is so different from my old pc.   I also have a new camera - Nikon D7100 - so I am attempting to learn TWO new things.  At least my camera came with a user's manual.  With my iMac I am stumbling through trial and error and taking up way too much time.   I tried using iPhoto but ended up losing my photo library I started (somehow it just disappeared after a series of error messages saying it was attempting to repair the library).  I ended up buying the Aperture app beause I want to be able to do more with photos for my art business. Now I am thinking iPhoto wasn't so bad, all except loosing my library, of course.  It was very simple to use.  But once I learn more I think I will appreciate  Aperture and at least through Aperture I was able to have my photo library restored.   I do not have a good printer yet, however, so I am attempting to have an outside print lab download my pictures to have the prints mailed to me.  (Note: I used to use Snapfish but didn't like my last batch of pics.  Someone suggested Walgreen's Photo Lab.   Maybe someone has a better suggestion.)
    However, I cannot download my pictures to any outside site because they said they must be in jpeg format.  My camera is set to take ONLY jpeg photos right now - I need to master this before even attempting raw - so the problem must be on the software use end.  When I transfer pics from my camera to my computer, Aperature (or is it thru iPhoto to Aperature I don't know) it gives them a name without a suffix attached.  I see that they identify the photo as JPEG at the top of the Info screen and I can go in and change the name and make it SAY .jpeg but even then I cannot download it to an outside photo lab for the same reason - "must be in jpeg format."    Plus to change the name to include the suffix .jpeg I am having to do that one picture at a time - there must be an easier way.  How do I make them all be .jpeg photos that can be recognized by outside photo labs?
    I would be open to sending my pics to the Apple photo print lab but I can only figure out how to send ONE at a time and that seems very impractical so I am obviously doing something wrong there.  How does the Apple photo lab compare to others?   How do I send a batch of photos at one time?  
    One other question not related to photos - With my p.c. I had a mouse that would let me right-click and move, copy or delete highlighted areas.  I cannot find that function at all with my iMac.  Is there a "right click" type of function on this computer?   I have this cool touch-pad.  No more mouse.   Sorry to be do dense.  I need users manuals I guess.  More hours.   I would appreciate any help so I can spend more time outside in my garden instead of hunched over my computer in frustration.   Thank you! 
    Oh, one more thing.  I cannot figure out my operating system.   My iMac box says "Preinstalled OS X and iLife4"    How can I find what version I have? That would be helpful.

    As for iPhoto, it sounds like you were trying to move files around in the library. That is a bib no-no in Aperture or iPhoto.

  • Can't Figure Out How to do This

    There's something I've been doing on my Treo 650 that I can't seem to figure out any way to do on my new iPhone 3G. Sorry for the somewhat "long story" here, but
    My wife is Chinese, so as we live our lives together, I have been keeping a continuously running "memo" on my Treo, into which I have periodically typed English words and phrases that would be valuable to learn Chinese equivalents for. So, whenever such a word comes up in life, I pop out that memo on my Treo, add a word to it, and put it away.
    Of course I have kept that, and everything else, sync'ed up with my Mac, so I can see those new words and phrases there too.
    To actually learn these new words and phrases, once every few months, I copy those new words into a spreadsheet, figure up translations for them, and study the result as new Chinese-language lessons.
    So, on the iPhone, it appears that I can do almost all of this using "Notes." But there are two things I can't figure out how to do:
    1. Back up (i.e., sync) that memo to my Mac routinely. Yes, I do see that I can Email it to myself periodically, but that's not quite the same as having a document on the iPhone "automatically" backed up on the Mac.
    2. I don't see any way to bring what I already have on my Treo into a "Note" on the iPhone. If I could copy and paste, I could Email that text to myself and then copy&paste it from that Email into the Note, but there's no copy&paste on the iPhone. I do see that there are "Notes" in the Email application, but those are not editable on the iPhone. They are visible on the iPhone, but can't be edited there. Even if they were editable, they still clutter up my inbox, but perhaps I could devise a "smart mailbox" to address that.
    In the first regard, Emailing is marginally acceptable, but I don't have any idea what to do about the second.

    I'm another one of the very grumpy customers regarding the problems synching Outlook calendars with the new 2.0 iPhone.
    I have another twist: I did not ever have multiple calendars in Outlook until the 2.0 update; I had just one. After I updated the iPhone software to 2.0 I have multiple calendars which I did not create. My iPhone has all the events listed, color coded by these various calendars, but when I look at my calendar(s) in Outlook, I can not see all the events at once. So my iPhone is the most complete, and my computer version is fragmented. This is an unacceptable royal pain. I'm relieved to know it's not just me, my iPhone, my Outlook, etc., but I'm definitely one of the many of us who are grumpy with Apple and impatient for their fix.
    My question is: how do I sync my Outlook to my iPhone and delete all these calendars without deleting events? I just want one calendar again: mine, all mine.
    PS I do have recurring events, but way too many to hand change them all; that's ridiculous. Even if I didn't have many of those it's ridiculous that the recurrences should create these problems. It's a pretty basic electronic calendar function.

  • Hard time figuring graphic card upgrade....

    I have a Mac PPC G5 2GHz dual, bought new in mars 2006. I have a hard time figuring out what graphic cards I can use.
    In Mactracker the graphic card specifics shown are for G5:s built late 2005 which allow Nvidia Geforce 6600 LE (which I also have now), Geforce 6600, Geforce 7800GT and Quadro FX 4500. Does not say anything about PCI or PCI-E.
    Can I use PCI-E cards or only PCI? When I search for the 7800GT card it seems is is only a PCI-E available. And when I view hardware on my computers graphics/displays the 6600 LE is shown as a PCI card (not PCI-E).
    The one I want to buy is ATI RADEON X1900 G5 Mac Edition 256MB. It is a PCI -E card.
    If I cant use PCI-E cards, what cards would u recommend?

    The ATI Radeon X1900 G5 Mac Edition is PCI express.

  • Excited to start editing and figuring out my hardware

    I'm getting started with editing after spending many years, if not decades interested in it. I have a new (thanks to xmas and my wife) laptop 10.5.8, 2.8 ghz intel core duo. My daughter is also sending me her old tower 10.4.9, dual 2ghz G5. It has Final cut studio 5.0
    Should I install final cut pro 5.0 on the laptop or am I okay using the tower? I want to edit video from my sony digital handycam trv27 and from my daughter's trv330 and make dvds. Nice looking dvds. Not home movie looking. The hardest part of this new adventure seems to be figuring out how the software and hardware best fit together. Can't wait to get to the fun part of actually editing. I hope an expert here might be able to give me some advice.

    Congratulations on getting started.
    A couple of points...
    1. v5.0 will not run on an intel machine. To run FCP on the laptop, you'll need to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 3 (which includes FCP7)
    2. Your daughter must send all disks, manuals and other documentation with the machine or you do not have a valid Final Cut Pro license. Possession of an installed version does not constitute ownership and, without all that stuff, you are not running legal software and are not eligible to upgrade.
    3. The G5 will be perfectly fine for editing DV.
    4. Read the manuals, read through articles at Ken Stone's website, do the tutorials a Lyndia.com if you like tutorials to learn. FCP is a deep, complex and frustrating program - made even more so when you have no conceptual basis to understand what's going on. The sooner you get a solid grounding within the program and with video in general, your editing life will be much smoother.
    5.If you come to this forum (or almost any other), recognize you are very unlikely to be the first person to ever have your specific question/issue. The search function - on this forum in particular and Google in general, will be your best friend. Use it as your FIRST step in solving your issue and you'll find a great deal of wisdom all ready laid out for you.
    6. Remember it's supposed to be fun.

  • Local hostname already in use - can't figure out what's going on

    I've been having issues with a wireless router and I think the problem lies somewhere within my computer. As I switch back and forth from trying to connect to the internet via my router or directly connected to my cable modem, I will often get this error:
    "This computer's local hostname "xyz" is already in use on this network"
    There is only one compuer on the network, however and I cannot figure out what's going on.
    I have 2 users set up on this machine, but I'm the admin and acting as such. Even with no other networked equipment hooked up to my Mac (except for the cable modem) this problem won't go away.
    I guess my real quesiton is what causes this and where should I go to troubleshoot things?
    I'm running 10.4.6, connect to my ISP using DHCP and have the same problem with both a D-Link and Linksys router.
    Any ideas?

    If your previous setup follows a flow like this: RCA
    CableModem-->NetGear Router-->AirPortExpress, there's
    something misconfigured routing-wise in your network.
    You have to decide which device (Netgear or AirPort
    Xpress) will handle the routing in your network.
    Previous to these problems, that was the basic flow of my network. The netgear router also fed a wired connection into a Wintel PC, and the AirPort Express hosted a wireless network that was extended by a second Airport Express. And that second AE connected to a ReplayTV with a wired connection. And then, of course, the PowerBook got Internet access wirelessly through the AE-hosted network. And that was it.
    That network always was configured so that the netgear router assigned IP addresses using DHCP, and the Airport Expresses would not assign IP addresses (i.e., "Distribute IP addresses" was NOT checked when you look at the configuration in Airport Admin Utility).
    How big is your network j? just 1 Mac (your
    PowerBook)?
    That was the state of the network a couple of days ago when I posted this. I have established that the PowerBook gets access to the Internet just fine directly though the cable modem, and just fine when it is the only wired connection to the router.
    Let's deal with your Mac first:
    Start with your Mac connected directly to the cable
    Modem. (When your mac is attached directly to the
    Cable Modem, do you use DHCP?)
    Go to SystemPreferences-->Sharing and type a Computer
    Name other than the default one
    Open Applications-->Utilities-->Terminal and type
    lookupd -flushcache (press Return) and reboot
    the Mac.
    I did this.
    One way to fix your network is to have the NetGear do
    the routing, and the AirPort Express to (just) extend
    your (wired) network wirelessly (No routing will be
    done from the AirPortXPress, (No distribution of IP
    Addresses)
    I soft reset both of my Airport Expresses. I configured the first one so that it was hosting a network, but not distributing IP addresses, and the second so that it was extending that wireless network. And I plugged the host AE into the netgear router. And for a little while, that was working.
    But then I got a message saying "IP Configuration 192.168.0.4 in use by 00:04:40:06:1f:82, DHCP Server 192.168.0.1". The dialog box with that message will come up periodically as long as the Airport Expresses are plugged into power and one is plugged into the router. Also, I once agaiin received the message saying the local hostname (the completely original one that I had created) was in use, and the name was being changed.
    Here is the thing. I cannot figure out what has that ...0.4 IP address and ...1f:82 MAC address on the network. That is not the "Internet port MAC address" or the "LAN port MAC address" for the Netgear router. It is also not the MAC address for either of the Airport Expresses or the PowerBook's internal Ethernet card.
    I accessed the router through my browser, and clicked on "Attached Devices." Here is the list of Attached Devices:

    The first two addresses are the two AE's, and the third is the internal Ethernet card of the PowerBook.

  • Trying to figure out mutt

    I want to figure out Mutt, but it's so diverse that there are to many options:lol:
    A few things i can't figure out,
    I want all the email in one inbox, that means, i have two imap-accounts. I want the read and unread in one inbox, the read have two be normal font and the unread should be a color or bold or something. I want something like opera's M2. I use offlineimap to fetch my mail.
    And it shouldn't ask is i want to move the email I read.
    Does someone know a good mutt guide
    And can someone recommend a good news reader?

    I think the option to not ask to move the email you read is "set move=no". That's off the top of my head. But honestly, I recommend spending some days slowly going through the Mutt manual and these websites (and man muttrc) just getting an overall sense of the landscape. Take notes. Yes it's complicated at first, but that's partly because it's so powerful. (And partly because it's old and grew up this way.)
    Getting all your mail from different accounts into a single mailbox is easy. Doing it with offlineimap is a lot trickier. If you have offlineimap synch your inbox, then whenever account A gets a message, it will get synched to your inbox and then when your inbox is synched against account B, it will get copied to account B too. Perhaps that's what you want. If not, then you can't be synching your inbox against both accounts. You could synch your account A with inboxA and account B with inboxB, and then have some script move the messages from inboxA and inboxB to a common inbox, but then why use offlineimap in the first place? Why not just use getmail, which just downloads mail? (You can tell getmail not to delete from the server.)
    By "newsreader" do you mean Usenet news or rss/atom-newsfeeds?
    If you mean rss-newsfeeds, then check out newsbeuter. It tries to be "the mutt of feedreaders."
    If you mean usenet newsgroups:
    There are a bunch of mutt-like newsreaders. For instance, slrn and tin. Slrn has a nice helper called "slrnpull." (I think the aur/slrn package didn't build slrnpull, but the aur/slrn-svn did.) Slrnpull works like getmail, but for usenet messages instead of email. It will just go fetch messages matching the criteria you give it. I've got it configured on a cron job to go to gmane and download some of the mailing lists that are archived there as newsgroups.
    You don't need to use slrnpull to use slrn--I think slrn can connect to the newsserver directly. It's just useful to have some of the work happen during downtime.
    Once the articles are downloaded to your machine, you can broswe them using slrn or --- mutt! Mutt will open the newsgrou;p files I download with slrnpull directly, no translators needed.   • I can't figure out how to edit part of GTK theme.

    I'm attempting to heavily modify the Numix GTK theme on Cinnamon. There's just one thing I can't figure out where to edit.
